Such a great experience working with Eric and his crew. We have a HUGE Dougals Fir in our front yard, as well as a Cedar in the back that the City of Seattle would not allow removal of. Eric came and gave us a quote for bringing the canopies up, and removing two smaller trees on the property. Apparently if your tree is "too beautiful" they will not give you a quote to cut it down. We had called for a quote for a very large tree in front of our business that the roots have buckled the sidewalk and now our foundation is being impacted. We scheduled them three weeks in advance. When no one showed, and I contacted them I was told I never confirmed the appointment, and that it would be another three weeks for them to come out. When I forwarded on the email confirmation I had received from them for the appointment, suddenly someone was available to come the next day. The day after someone supposedly came out (I don't really know since no one came into the office to say they were there) I received an email stating the following: "We have decided not to give you a bid on your tree removal. I discussed it with my crew leaders and they just don't want to be the ones to kill that beautiful tree. Thanks for the opportunity to bid on your project." Apparently a tree that is causing damage to the sidewalk and building can't be removed by Emerald Tree Service if it's too pretty. Perhaps they could let people know that tree aesthetics are a deciding factor for them before making a potential customer wait three weeks for a quote. PS - I had sent pictures of this amazingly beautiful tree before they even came out. Apparently my limited photography skills did not adequately capture it's beauty so they would know in advance they wouldn't be able to bring themselves to cut it down. read more

I wish I could give these guys 6 stars. I just bought a house on a 1/2 acre here in Seattle (that's a BIG lot) with a lot of mature trees (I can't even count how many) and a small orchard, all of it overgrown and neglected for many years. I was feeling so overwhelmed, I didn't know where to start. Eric and his team were incredible, listening to all of my concerns, giving me their expert advice and going above and beyond what they promised. My experience started with getting multiple bids, Eric came in the middle, price wise. Keep in mind that Eric's team are not just a bunch of guys with chainsaws (nor are they a team of non-English speakers), so they won't be as cheap as some of the others on Yelp or Angie's List. Two of the lead foremen were certified arborists (Alan & Quinn), they were knowledgeable, thoughtful (they'd ask if I liked the heights on each of my trees, make new suggestions for improvement, etc) and professional. The work took two days, both days going into the dark (which is more than what they signed up for). They were determined to get the job done, and do it RIGHT. To me, that was worth having the arborists on site -- I know that my trees are now going to be their best. I should say how in depth my project was. We had 2 **LARGE** Douglass Fir trees removed by crane, 3 or 4 diseased pear trees removed, 1 Laurel removed, another one I can't remember. We had a gigantic Red Cedar pruned, and another had so much clamatis growing on it, it was becoming strangled, so much of it was cut and removed. Two Japanese lace leaf maples pruned, several laurel trees pruned & cut way back, Holly trees removed, another pine pruned, a Camelia & a magnolia pruned, 4 stumps ground. All the trees on our property were cut far enough away from the house, so in case of a storm, we would be safe. Alan spent time going around to just make all my trees happy and healthy. Quinn also had great recommendations for some of my Laurels. We knew what we were getting into when we purchased this property (well, sort of!), we really wanted our own private space in the city and we got it. I know that Eric and his team will be with us until we sell, and we're already making plans for some other pruning come Summer time. I should also say that two of my neighbors liked the work so much, they are also using Emerald Tree Svc. I can't say how different our property looks now (we now have an incredible view of the lake!!) and it's truly thanks to Emerald Tree Service. I cannot recommend highly enough. read more

I was so shocked to find out many arborists/tree specialists were afraid to remove my Hawthorn tree because they said thorns on the tree were poisonous. WTF? Thank God, i found Eric...he didn't hesitate and told me his company can do the job. I didn't have Eric and his crew started the job until last week because of budget constraint. They scheduled time to come look at my trees and make a bid, then after no-showing the scheduled appointment emailed me to say they wouldn't make a bid. Apparently they were too busy and my house was a bit too far away. This was a waste my time and I could have been working on finding a different arborist. read more

These guys were great! Eric, the owner, came out within a couple days of our call. He seemed very knowledgeable and his bid came in under the other companies we called. They did the work the following week. We had two large Douglas fir trees (80 ft & 100+ ft) taken down, had some others trimmed up, had some MASSIVE laurels shaped into a manageable hedge, and had an overgrown madrona tree trimmed and shaped. Also had their stump grinder out the following day to grind the stumps down to ground level. There were two guys cutting and another two or three who would haul debris away as soon as it hit the ground. I can't say enough about how tidy they were. When they were done, everything was cleaned up - they even used a blower on the lawn. They cut the wood from the big trees into manageable rounds. The stump grinder ground down some of the massive tree roots as well as the stumps. The madrona tree is one that we really like but it had gotten out of control. Eric trimmed it up so that it still looked completely natural. It did not look "sheared off". I would definitely use this company again. They did an awesome job! read more

Eric and his two crews from Emerald Tree Service did a big job at our place this week -- giving a very clean and very pretty bowl-cut to our giant horse-chestnut, including the removal of one fairly problematic limb that was impinging on a power line. They also took down two big holly trees and an 80' bird cherry, as well as bucking a third fallen cherry and two fallen cedars. They worked incredibly quickly and efficiently, and left basically zero impact on anything around -- deck surfaces were appropriately protected and they worked around our rather obtrusive garden. Lawn still in good shape too. Our experience was great from start to finish -- Eric came by twice to quote, and to re-evaluate some aspects on the chestnut -- the guy really cares about trees :) The crew were all very friendly and seemed to enjoy the work. An Outstanding Job!!! The 2 crews from Emerald Tree Service cleared out alot of trees that have over grown on my property in the front and in the back on a steep slope blocking important views. They were promptly on time, went over again what needed to be done and went to work. Kimmi, Josh, Traves, Maxwell, Joey, whom I was able to get their names, (there were more workers) were easy to talk to and very helpful in making sure they accommodated my request. They cleaned off all the english ivy on some very tall trees that blocked important views. The highlight of the day was when a huge holly tree came down. My family and I and all the crew had those cell phones out video tapeing that fall!!! This was a two day job so they will be back out to finish the steep slope of the rest of the trees. We had Eric and his crew out a year or so ago to remove a large tree and provide some trimming service for us. This season, we asked Eric out to provide an estimate for further service, and to provide maintenance on some shrubs and trees they pruned the previous year. On this occasion, some of the work that was previously done was no longer "part of their scope" and we were referred to other landscaping services. After contacting other providers, we were told that the services required would be nearly THREE TIMES the cost of Emerald Tree Services, with much more work being done than we needed or required. Upon contacting Eric Gale and his company Emerald Tree Services, DESPITE having been scheduled previously by Mr. Gale, he told us he "wasn't interested" in doing the work he previously agreed to and quoted us for, because it was of such a "small nature". Obviously, Mr. Gale felt that we were not worth his time, DESPITE having estimated and quoted (and scheduled) the work for us. I can only state facts, as I have above. Despite having spent $1200-1500 the previous year, he was not willing to come back (despite having scheduled us for an appointment) and do any further work. My recommendation to you is to get several bids, and ask the contractor you settle on if they will BACK UP THEIR WORK; if not, look elsewhere. In this case, Eric Gale and his company Emerald Tree Service failed in not only providing a proper first years' service but failed in proper FOLLOW-UP. During his first tour and estimate for our property he was MORE THAN HAPPY to provide his services (at an appropriate fee) but this year "passed the buck" to other firms, and then BACKED OUT when he realized there was little "money to be made". I'm more than happy to quote from his email correspondence, and I am more than happy to let my neighbors know of this business practice. The most recent email we got was "sorry to disappoint you, but this job is TOO SMALL for us to bother with". read more

Our neighbor recently had a 40 inch diameter Doug Fir taken down. The Emerald Tree crew worked for 2 days ensuring that all the limbs were cut and zip lined down over our garden without incident. We chose to go with trimming the hedge. The crew arrived promptly as scheduled. They were quick and efficient. Great Price and Great Service!!!!! I had some storm damage to one of the trees in my front yard. I called and got estimates to take the tree down from several companies. Emerald Tree Service's estimate was about half the price of the other companies. This made me skeptical so I did my homework. This company was rated A+ by the BBB and was also accredited. The comments on Yelp and every other site I could find were positive. Lastly, I checked them out with the departments of licensing and revenue. No problems there. So I accepted their bid. Now it was time to get the work done. I was not able to be home when the work was being done, but my wife was. She said that the workers were very nice and professional . She also said that they did a wonderful job. They cleaned up to her satisfaction and since my wife is not easily impressed I felt compelled to write this review. I recently moved into a new house. The south side of the property is lined with massive, 12-15 foot holly and laurel. I called Emerald Tree Service on a Tuesday morning. They came and looked at it the same day and they performed the work (trimming, thinning, shortening.... tough to do for hollies, my easier on laurels if they are shorter) as they promised, within the time lines they suggested. The work was reasonably priced. They cleaned up all the evidence of the messy work. I have never worked with such responsive contractor workers before (and believe me I have seen and experienced crazy sh*t with contractors over the years...probably like most of you). Our condo association needed to remove a tree and prune the roots of two other trees. Having to work with the Seattle Department of Transportation on the project, we were provided a couple references. The first place waited 4-5 days before returning my message. When a rep finally did ring me, I couldn't talk so promised to call back. I did so an hour later, but I again got the message machine and no return call. The second place never bothered to call me back. Looked like a job for yelp.com. Emerald Tree Service's good reviews, along with a clean bill of health from the Better Business Bureau, prompted us to give them a try. We were quoted $2450 for our pretty big job, more than we expected, but we needed closure. As it turned out, the individual who booked our gig apparently didn't realize his company doesn't have the most appropriate equipment for root pruning. Or at least that's what the city arborist claimed. The lead ETS worker on our job, Todd, was fantastic. He couldn't obtain an "air spade" but was able to prune the tree roots with his grinder to the best of his ability, which we appreciated since we were scheduled for a sidewalk concrete pour over the area the following day. Todd supervised the tree removal, got his hands dirty in the process, and seemed to work really well with the two other crew members. Emerald Tree Service had also hired two flaggers to deal with traffic while our curbside tree was being removed. Our tree will be missed. The expensive bills we've had as a result of the tree's damage to our sidewalk and sewer system, however, will not be missed. read more

I had Emerald Tree service remove a 40 foot tall blue spruce from my rockery. Both power and telephone lines ran through its branches and it had a distinct lean. Emerald owner and certified arborist, Eric Hunter Gale, had evaluated the tree at no obligation or cost a week ago. His written estimate was very reasonable, but he noted that the tree did not impose an imminent hazard. I decided to proceed because the tree's roots were beginning to lift up concrete slabs on my driveway and I was concerned that a future wind storm might push the tree over and knock out power and telephone service for myself and my neighbors. Eric's crew of two people showed up this afternoon and I watched them as they meticulously and safely took down this tree, chipped the branches, loaded the logs, and totally cleaned up after themselves. . About, 2/3 through the job, another crew showed up and assisted in finishing the job and cleaning up, down to blowing and collecting the wood flakes spit out by the chain saws when they were limbing and cutting the trunk down in sections. I watched this entire operation from start to finish and I was totally impressed with their technique, thoroughness, and team work. On Monday, May 13, at 4:30 pm I found one of my weeping birches, over 100 years old, lost a third of her crown in our freak windstorm. The HUGE branch crashed down on our power lines, threatening to tear out the lines. I immediately called Eric who, bless his soul, responded within a half hour and within an hour had the problem resolved! WOW!!!! Now that is what I call SERVICE!!! Eric was very careful. Safety was his first concern for everyone around and for himself. He was also very careful of my garden beds. Although the tree fell over my retaining walls and flower beds he did his best to mitigate the potential for further damage which was greatly appreciated.
