I can't say enough good things about Jim and the team at Emerald State Roofing. Last week after a heavy rainstorm, my ceiling suddenly started leaking--right underneath where our upstairs bathroom is located. With my husband away on business, I panicked and assumed it was a plumbing issue. Of course, the day after a storm, every contractor in town was booked solid. I've had home repair work done in the past and unfortunately, it hasn't always gone well--shoddy work, inflated prices, and a lot of upselling. So having to call place after place without the benefit of reviews was stressful. Out of sheer desperation, I called Jim at Emerald State Roofing--not for roofing help, but hoping he might know a good plumber. Not only did he immediately give me the name of someone local who offered to come out the next day, but Jim also offered to swing by just to take a look. It turned out the problem wasn't plumbing at all--it was a roofing issue. That evening, Jim patched the problem himself. A few days later, his team came out and extended the patch to cover the entire section of the roof and my aging skywall to prevent any more damage until I can get it properly repaired. At no point did Jim try to upsell me or push me into buying a new roof. Instead, he gave me some advice and the contact info of someone he trusts for gutter work. He also pointed out a few other things around the house exterior that could become future issues--again, with no pressure or pitch attached. We paid this company to paint and replace the boards outside of our home. While the initial quote and coordination were smooth, we are now experiencing issues. A year after the work was completed, we are seeing chips, paint bubbles, and difficulties in getting the co-owner, Jim, to address these problems. Despite our repeated requests, the follow-up repairs have not fully resolved the issues. After Jim sent his team to address some of the problems, we discovered additional spots needing repair. The second floor of our house has not been inspected, and Jim or Todd have not offered to visit. Communication has been challenging, with responses often lacking in professionalism. Jim has attributed the issues to factors beyond the company's control, such as the roof of our shed or alleged damage we caused. Anything but taking accountability and possible problems with the paint. We have tried reaching out multiple times without success. Given the ongoing issues and lack of responsiveness, we are considering having the paint job redone and exploring our options for resolving this matter as the contract appears to have been breached. read more

own a beautiful home in Issaquah - better known as "The Castle House" on Issaquah Hobart Rd SE. It is a 35 year old house that unfortunately has a roof leak. My wife contacted Emerald State and our fast talking sales person, with a good personality, convinced me that the roof is not the problem. Jim Oakley said it's the chimney. Well, suffice it to say, after I signed the estimate in June 2024 and provided a large down payment, Emerald State did everything but fix my roof leak. All while now making my chimney look different than the rest of my house. Jim Oakley stopped communicating with us late September 2024 when I informed him that the new drywall repair completed three days earlier is still leaking. I was now on my own with water still coming into my home until I found two contractors (1) Alpine Roofing Care, inc., and (2) Powers chimney and masonry. Both contracts confirmed that the roof is leaking, not the chimney, but I need to redo the chimney as it was not done properly. I plan to go to small claims court as the owner of Emerald State, Todd, is not willing to remedy the situation for me. I would not recommend Jim Oakley or Emerald State to do any roof or masonry repair if you want quality work performed. read more

Todd and Jim are the coolest roofers ever. I was on a tight schedule to get the roof leak repaired and they were truly a godsend. If you want your roof replaced/repaired you can call any roofer, but if you need a friend who is honest, works hard, and cares for your family & property, and happens to know all about roofs, call Emerald State. Winter 2020 the Seattle area was hit by storm after storm with Covid ongoing. Every roofer told me to wait 8 weeks, or replace the entire roof, or simply try someone else. Jim came over the next day and the crew completed the work a week later. Jim is extremely knowledgeable and efficient. He quickly identified the problem after flying the drone over my roof for a few minutes. He is super honest with all my options. The day the crew came, we were just hit with another storm the night before, with fallen branches everywhere and 500,000 households lost their power. One crew member's house was hit by a fallen tree - but he made fixing my roof his priority. BOTTOM LINE - I honestly believe this is the type of small business we need to all support. What started off promising turned into a nightmare. They installed a complete new roof, front siding rework and painting. Over $110k paid and 3 years later, the painting was never completed, leaving me to fix their mistakes. We started with the roof, from the time of the quote and down payment, it took nearly a year before the work would start. The crew was great, and the work was mostly satisfactory with the exception of a few hoods that were not secured, some screen and deck damage from falling debris. If we would have stopped here, I would have been much better off. Unfortunately, we discovered that the siding on the front of the house was rotting and needed to be replaced. This is where things slowly started to go wrong. The work was mostly done well with the exception of the caulking and backfilling of the nail holes. The difference in this work vs. the roofing was that he charged time and materials, which far exceeded the initial estimate by almost double. Total work took about five months and half way through I had to plead with them not to pause and go to another job location. The painting project was the worst of everything. Took about 4 months for them to come and tape off the house, then left the house taped and sealed for another 2 months. When painting finally commenced, we realized that they had substituted the cheap paint (Sherwin Williams Super paint) for the agreed upon premium paint (Sherwin Williams Emerald). The painting project started so late in September that the cold rainy season had started. This is where they were rushing the paint work and the shoddy work ensued. Paint is permanently tacky and just about everything sticks to it. Lots of drips, over spray and nail holes that were never properly filled from the front siding project. The trim was only applied as a thin single coat, which the wood would show through the paint. After they had left things in disarray, the salesman came for final payment and was very contentious to receive to the extent of threatening to sue. Upon reviewing my payment history vs. the charges he presented, he ultimately overcharged us $10k from an extra check we paid them half way through the front siding work. Two years later, they are no longer reachable and refuse to finish the work or even fix anything. read more

During a fairly heavy rain storm, we noticed water was coming in through a window frame. Immediately figured water had found a way in from the roof, creating a path to the window. Contacted a neighbor who had Emerald State do work for them within the past month, happy with the service they received. Within a few hours of leaving a voice mail, I was contacted by Jim. Explained the issue and he was able to come out later that day to inspect and provide a quote. What was interesting is he used a drone to perform a visual inspection and take pictures. The crew came over the following day to begin repairs. Won't go into the details about the entire job. Needless to say, they found where the leak originated and placed a ice and water barrier, new shingles and additional flashing. The crew was very professional, they did a great job post repair clean up. Prior to the crew finding the actual point of entry for the water the following day. Jim went above and beyond by coming to the house during the evening, while it was raining to get onto the roof to place an additional temporary barrier as water was still leaking in through the window. read more

Do not use this company! They did not install flashing or an ice barrier, but simply used tar paper, and in the PNW that is NOT GOOD! They did not use louvers over the vents, just put tar paper up to them. Then they used the WRONG shingles! All the shingles curled up! And to boot, they DO NOT HONOR THE WARRENTEE, but they are more than happy to give you a great rate to fix their MISTAKES! Oh, and yes red flags were flying when none of the workers knew how to reinstall the skylight! We needed a new roof . We hired Emerald State in early April one of our rainiest months and our roof was a leaky mess! They put a large tarp over the problem area until the rain subsided and then they got to work and were able to start and finish within a few days .There was a fair amount of damage and many areas needed replacement boards as well. His crew was great and cleaned up like they were never there every day! During the process they put the tarp back on as needed which was very much appreciated! Unfortunately, I am unable to review Emerald State's quality of work, however, this review is based on the customer service or lack of in scheduling an estimate. I had submitted a request online and waited 3 days and no one responded. I then called and got an appointment for an estimate. The day of estimate, no one shows. I called back to see what happened and was told they would look into it. Then about an hour later, I receive a call from the estimator and was told that there was some sort of miscommunication between the scheduler and him and their dates and times were all confused. The estimator then confirms the day and time with me for the next day. The next day comes and again, no one shows or calls to inform me. I call the office again and was told they would look into it again. Another hour passes again and no one calls. I called back and the scheduler had spoken to the estimator and that he said he was going to call me right away. I told her no one called me and she apologized but there was nothing she could do. If they can't communicate between themselves or have the courtesy to call the customer to inform they won't make an appointment, I would be careful to work with a company like this. read more

Below I list facts about my experience dealing with this company: * I was promised "immediate" job-start after contract signing (early September). This did NOT happen. The work started October. I contracted this company to install all the exterior siding, to install the moldings for window & door, to install my entry door and exterior painting. * I was promised that the work would be completed prior to Thanksgiving, This did NOT happen. * The contract included installing round window moldings, but afterwards I was told that I needed to BUY my own round moldings. I did, but I never got reimbursed for the purchases, even though all the molding were included in the contract. * My brand new entry door ($10K) was heavily damaged and the installation was defective (door wobbled) so I had to hire a third party to fix the damages. * Defective molding materials were used through my house windows and doors (in very visible areas, I have pictures). * Without authorization, one of my two sheds was painted without proper pressure washing the exterior. Fresh paint was applied on top of a ~30 yr old & dusty paint (there was no city-water hooked to the house...also, it does not make any sense that only ONE of the two sheds was painted...if the decision was made to paint, then it should have been both, not just one.
