Shout out to John, the CMT who worked on me, who really understands how to do deep work in synch with the breath. Elysium was an amazing find! I can't say enough good things about this place! I booked a relaxing couples massage with my boyfriend for his birthday and I was so pleased with the experience we received. Liz and Karianne are extremely thorough and took such great care of us! One of the things I appreciate the most is that I had to switch my appointment at the last minute and the people at Elysium were so accommodating! Once again Yelp put me on the right path. I was feeling indulgent and looking for some beauty treatments with which to pamper myself and stumbled across the teeth whitening treatment offered here. It was a very short appointment, only about 20 minutes, but it seemed to work, my teeth are definitely whiter! I'll probably go back in a month or so for one more treatment. 4.5* My friend and I came here for an afternoon massage on a Sunday. They were good about returning our calls to schedule the appointments. When we got there, we checked in and were immediately brought into the "relaxation room" where we were offered champagne, water, tea, etc. It really was a relaxation room with lounge chairs, pillows, blankets, and it just felt cozy. After a few minutes, our two female massage therapists came in to get us (Sarah and Stephanie), and they brought us into a couples massage room. Fast forward to the massage....I had Stephanie. She made sure the pressure was right since I was sore that day. I had a swedish massage and it was one of the better massages I've had in a while. To sum up...I fell asleep because I was so relaxed. She did a GREAT job, and I would totally come back to see them again if we go on another mini vacation to Monterey. My sister and I were in town visiting the parents, when my back spasmed. I needed a massage to work through the knots and so we headed off for a couples massage at Elysium. The entry is into a living room that has comfy chairs to relax in while waiting to be helped. We were greeted by the manager and she led us back to a relaxing area, where we sat on beautiful chaise lounges and sipped fruit-infused sparkling. The only distraction from complete relaxation was the staff chatting in another room and a hair dryer sound. When that all died down, it was truly a comfortable, relaxing area with soft colors and fabrics hanging on the walls and dividing the hallway. Our couples massage was very good. I had problems turning on the table because of my back, but my masseuse was very patient and accommodating--pretty impressive since she was 8 months pregnant! Both my sister and I loved the body workers who did our massages. They responded to our specific needs and we came away feeling so relaxed and refreshed. My sister said her entire body felt light as air! We both pledged to return every time we go to Monterey. I booked a 90 minute hot stone massage with Jean and I was not disappointed! Booking the appointment was a breeze and can all be done online. I booked it the morning of and was able to get in! Jean was extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and talented with those hands of hers. She used both hot stones and a ceramic hot stone bar. This was my first hot stone massage and wow, I will definitely be rebooking another massage with her! That was the fastest 90 minutes of my life. I was not disappointed or cheated out of any time! Had such an delightful experience at Elysium. The massage therapists here are professional, and so good! My husband and I had a wonderful couple's massage, and I specifically had a prenatal massage. They had the right accessories to make my massage the most comfortable it could be. They were so accommodating, and even fit us in slightly earlier in order to allow a 90 minute instead of 60 minute. I paid $100 for what? Who knows. She couldn't even tell me what she did when I asked. I got a "facial" that included a mask and mystery toner, but left there red-nosed, clog-pored, and devoid of sunscreen. Seriously, what aesthetician sends people out on a sunny day without applying sunscreen to the face on which they just worked? Found this place by reading reviews on Yelp... Came out to Monterey for my birthday to receive a couples massage. Of course I came earlier to get the full treatment. When you first arrive you would not think that there is a Spa located in the building. It was located in the back of the parking lot, but upon walking in you can just feel relaxed. I started off with the pedicure. The girl was nice, I loved my mimosa's but I would say "Save Your Money" I felt paying the $55.00 for what they called deluxe was WAY OVER PRICED!!! Now on to my facial...OMG can you say heaven?!?!?! Loved it!! She was very nice and very attentive! My boyfriend arrived about 30 min early prior to our couples massage, was waiting in the lounge (which is very comfortable), but did not get a robe to relax in. This would have definitely been an added experience to our wonderful massage day. Pros: The couples massage was OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! All I got to say is we will be back there again real soon!!! We live out in the valley and all I got to say is that we will definitely would drive out there just for the couples massage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Facials- what can I say ladies..We need to treat ourselves. I would totally recommend this for your beauty regimen Plenty of parking Cons: Pedicure was OVERPRICED for the treatment received. Enjoyed a couples massage with MH for our anniversary. I got a prenatal massage from Melanie and MH got deep tissue from Shay. Location: We were surprised to pull up to a cul-de-sac of business that looked like quaint converted houses. We were glad to find 2 hour parking out front. Upon entering Elysium the place does seem like it was probably a house previously, but I think it makes it seem kinda homey and cozy. The environment is very relaxing and the decor is pretty nice. When we first arrive they brought us to their relaxation room and offered us tea, water, coffee (I was told they offer mimosas too, but for obvious reasons I stuck to just water). We were given several minutes to settle in and relax and they didn't rush us at all. (I suppose if you are on a timeline you could ask to go ahead and start if you are on a schedule...we probably relaxed for a whole 15 minutes before we got started). Massage: I really enjoyed my prenatal massage. Melanie gave me several options of prenatal pillows and positions for my comfort. You can do side-lying with a body pillow, but I decided to try the other pregnancy pillows that allowed me to lie completely on my stomach. It's hard to describe, but there were basically two pillows specially contoured to cradle my shape adjusted with a gap in between for my tummy to rest between. My head was face down in the typical u-shaped pillows they have at massage places. I never thought laying on my stomach would be comfortable, but surprisingly I felt relaxed enough to nap like that if I wanted. 3/4th of the way through the massage she adjusted the pillows in a way that allowed me to lie on my back semi-reclined with a large wedge pillow under my knees - no discomfort at all! I haven't a a lot of massages but this is my second one during my pregnancy, and I was impressed by Melanie's skill. She really seemed to know what she was doing and every part of my body seemed to have a very specific massage technique and she seemed to know just how to press on different points of my body to get the aches out. She was also very polite to check on my comfort throughout the massage and asked permission for if I wanted hot towels on my back or feet before doing it. The hot towels on my back and feet were a nice touch to the massage and she replaced them several times as they got cold. My hub's massage was enjoyable, but when he asks for deep tissue he likes the pressure really REALLY firm, so I think he didn't enjoy it as much as I did mine. He has wishes that she really really attacked his crunchy shoulder knots, but overall the massage loosened him up. Oh... I did my a bunch of research for massages in terms of price, and I think Elysium's prices are a good deal considering how expensive they are in most other places. Improvements: - The one thing that would have been nice is if they helped or at least offered hot towels to wipe the massage oil off afterwards. I'm not sure if that's standard or not but another massage place did that for us and I really appreciated it because after our massage we were set to head out for dinner and I felt a tad oily post-massage. Thus I had to just to a quick wipe up of my arms and neck in the bathroom with damp paper towels. - They didn't ask us in the beginning about any preferences or trouble spots so I was worried they might miss something I wanted, but my masseuse did a great job so I didn't need to ask for anything. My husband had some trouble spots he wanted specifically so if you mention them they definitely are willing to adjust and accommodate. - There was a bit of phone tag trying to make a reservation because whenever I called during the late afternoon I just got an answering machine. Maybe this was one off days but our appointment was at 5:15 and we were asked to come in 15 mins early which we did. But no one would open the door!! We waited till 5:20 and then started looking for another place. At about 5:38 they called me and said they were waiting for us???? Being out wedding anniversary we wanted it to be a nice relaxing day so we went back. They did say sorry for what happened and the staff was kind and polite. However as for the massage I really wasn't impressed. They concentrated too much on the hot towels rather than on the massage. I barely felt any hands rubbing me. She is so knowledgeable about different types of massages, and taught me a few things to avoid with home massage during my pregnancy (very important to go to a certified prenatal massage therapist). The lotion she used didn't smell, which is important to a pregnant gal. She checked in on how I was feeling, and had options for the massage (side or use body pillows). I needed a message so I called a couple local spas I've been to in the past to inquire about booking an appointment and because of the poor customer service over the phone I decided to call Elysium. They had great reviews on yelp. Liz answered the phone and she was very friendly and informative. I was able to book an appointment for the following day. Liz welcomed me in and as soon as I walked in the door I was impressed. I felt relaxed right away with the warm atmosphere and aromatherapy scent. I was shown around and escorted to the relaxation room. I was given a soft robe and slippers and enjoyed a complimentary Mimosa. Liz was my massage therapist and she was awesome. One of the best massages I've ever had and I have had many. She knew exactly what I needed. Very intuitive. She incorporated warm pillows to loosen up my muscles, hot towels, hot stones and stretching. She wasn't rushed and keeping track of time like the local spas seem to do. I booked the relaxing massage, which was very relaxing but she also really worked the areas that needed more attention. I love the fact that they are a family owned and operated business. I met the owner Charlene and she was very warm and friendly as well. Oh and the prices are VERY reasonable. Cheryl was wonderful! I'm 24 weeks pregnant with all your typical aches and pains. Mix that with sleeping on a terrible hotel mattress, I needed help! She was able to see me same-day and was very detailed in our consultation, making sure she knew absolutely everything I needed worked on. She made sure I was comfortable and the massage was AWESOME!
