I've always loved the location. It is a part of an old apartment you will see along the streets of Broadway. We came in to the minimalistic space. There is a long bar type table that is by the front window. If I was by myself (which happens quite a bit), I would want to sit there and look at street traffic all day long. There are also small round tables for you and one more friend. This place is not setup for a large group of friends wanting to hang out. We ordered an Americano and I was recommended their featured special - Mexico / La Perla de Daxaca. As you can see, they have two Clover coffee machines. I first came across this machine when I was watching my wired subscription on Youtube. This equipment costs approximately $11,000 each. I won't go into the details, you can watch the Video. We were served carbonated water with our coffee which was a nice touch to clean our palettes and also extend the after taste of the coffee. First, the Mexico / La Perla de Daxaca. Relating to my experience with Revolver, this brew is on the acidic side but not as bold. I drank it black just like all the other coffees I've sampled. Americano / Before I became a student of coffee brewing, having interest in how coffee is brewed and beans selections from different countries, this was my go to drink at Starbucks. I was looking forward to tasting the Elysian version and it did not disappoint. Bitter to every taste, and followed by the carbonated water they serve, you can actually taste the sweetness. We were told that the baked goods were done in house by their pastry chef daily. One of the best sellers are the Amaretti, Short Bread, and Cranberry Muffins. Which were sold out when we were there. Lastly, we couldn't resist on a little treat while we enjoy our coffee. We had a hard time picking but settled on the shortbread. It was soft, and possesses a sweetness with a hint of saltiness that isn't overpowering. I am happy that I've found a place where I want to sit in front of my laptop, and sip coffee for a large portion of my day. I think I'll skip on going to Blenz, Starbucks, and Timmy Ho's all across the street. read more

While visiting from out of town we visited this coffee shop every day. I like the ceramic cups when you order in. I hate the cheap paper cups of the big name coffee establishments. Very good coffee and baking and I've found the service good and friendly too. I typically have a cappuccino - slightly bitter but far from excessively so. An extra bonus is the sparkling water dispenser to hydrate and cleanse the palate. I come by quite often and finally decided to give it a try. I think it's just A-OK. If you enjoy your coffee a little on the acidic side, this is the place for you. I personally prefer more body. Customer service was ... I don't know how to describe it. As I was ready to reach for my sugar, the staff grabbed the glass container of sugar packs and took it away. I am pretty sure she was filling it up but I'm 100% sure there were a few more packs on the bottom that I could use before she took off with the glass bowl. I just wanted that one pack in my coffee, I stood there for what felt like the longest time to wait for her to come back...from wherever she went. My coffee was getting cold! Oh, and I think the coffee is slightly on the pricey side. But then, I think it's because it's a special/unique coffee shop? Apparently its rare to have coffee from the clover machine Elysian uses. I do feel quite lucky and special to have had coffee here. Not to mention the coffee I had was very special in that it was a Kenyan that had obvious notes of citrusy and lemon flavors. Be prepared to pay more than you are use to pay for a cup of coffee, and also be sure to be fully invested to the whole drinking experience. Order your coffee, have a seat, relax, sniff the coffee, feel the complex aroma embrace your nose and mouth, then take a taste and feel in awe in the complexity of flavors in your mouth. The only downside appears to be they do not offer all the various other different styles of brewing coffee such as the pour over method. Solid win, also this place gets pretty packed. read more

a great place, but I was a little perturbed that I couldn't get a half caffeine espresso drink. It always amazes me that no one has yet explained to me why that is not possible...they just say they can't do it...and for that I find this place a little pretentious. The coffee I did have was pretty good, but not the best I have had...hence the 4 star, not 5 star review. I will however go here ANY day over a chain coffee store. read more

I've walked by this place so many times and have wanted to try it for a while. Ambiance: minimalistic (love that); calm mood music. Seating: a long bar by the window and a few booths inside. Menu: what menu? They dont have one on the wall so unless you want a drip coffee or a classic espresso based drink (latte or straight espresso) then its not for you. Cost: just under 3 dollars for a dark roast drip coffee in my 16 oz mug WITH TIP. They asked if it was to go or if i was staying. I said i was staying for a while and they prompted a tip function when i paid. Sweeteners: No stevia, just brown sugar and honey (wtf?) Room: will ask if you want room and offer almond or soy at no additional cost (THANK YOU) No wifi. Crowded. Little option to customize my own drink. As a coffee buff, i hate that. I love the ambiance but that doesnt make up for my morning cup of joe made exactly how i like it (which i can actually get at starbucks with free refills and wifi). I hate going to a place and seeing everyone glassy-eyed and hypnotised by their screens and hogging the seats for hours when some of us just want to sit and chat with a friend over a coffee. With all the great coffee places in town this one needs some work. The first time I went here the coffee was great. They insisted on giving us coffee in a mug because they said it would loose its heat and flavour in a to go cup. The expensive +$5 cup (12 oz) of coffee was ridiculously good but the service and atmosphere were completely off. The servers need to learn to be human also not to argue to the end with customers about their product. Our experience of the place earned an "F". I was determined to try the place again (the coffee was great that one time) and took my mom there. We shared a coconut macaroon which was great but insanely pricing for what you get. Considering my step dad pumps these out of the oven on command I was disappointed. The coffee was terrible. We were each given a glass bodum of coffee which instantly became cold and flavourless. Coffee aficionados will know that coffee should be brewed using water that has only just boiled and then rested for a few minutes. So they start with not so hot water and then put the coffee in a container that looses heat rapidly. The service was snoby and weird. This is not a place for me. I like casual and human servers that look at you like you're a person! Weird service Pompous atmosphere overrated coffee (The clover is not necessary folks. It's just a reverse bodum. Am I missing something here? It seems like everyone is experiencing Elysian's "delicious" coffee, yet I am nowhere near... If I go to any coffee house, I order one of three coffee drinks: a cappuccino, espresso or straight up black coffee. No Americano's, mocha's, latte's or things laden with syrups, whipped cream or sprinkles here. I proceeded to ask the man if they stocked almond milk, so I could get a cappuccino...no almond milk here he said, only soy. From there I ordered a small black coffee. Apparently they one have one size for the coffee, which is a 12 oz? I do not know what bean they were using on this particular day, but they proceeded to use their Clover to make my coffee...hooray I thought as the Clover makes a mean cup of coffee... What I actually got was scorching hot, bitter tasting "liquid," not the smooth, creamy coffee I was expecting. The cup of coffee was quite acidic, meaning the body was lower, hence you couldn't taste anything but bitterness nor could you smell the actual aroma of the beans...which you should be able too. Bitter tasting coffee from the Clover comes from water temperate not being right---it was evident that the water was too hot. I probably only drank 1/3 of the coffee because it was that horrible. Hot water = over-extraction of beans = cup of dirty water. Water not hot enough = under-extraction of beans = cup of dull water. *Sigh* read more

My favourite cappucino in Vancouver. I haven't tried the food, don't love the service, don't wish I lived in the space...but the coffee, the coffee! She has my heart! Tasty every time I've had it, and served with latte art to boot. Small, dark, strong and pretty. I couldn't ask for more. The staff here are obviously very serious about their coffee, and it comes through. I've been here when someone was serving to (what appeared to be?) his friends a number of different coffees made in the Clover and speaking about them in a very knowledgeable manner. I immediately proceeded to become jealous...then tried to devise a plan to befriend someone who works here. Any takers? No? If you like your coffee or beverage served by pretentious can't smile pompous hipsters then come here. It's one of those many typical Vancouver business models where them being there is somehow an elite privilege for everyone else. Have no idea how places like this stay in business. Only in Vancouver I say, as people who do business this way would never survive in any major city. Management and staff here are plain rude and don't know anything about customer service or developing customer relations. This place is so overhyped. Save your money and go elsewhere. I run a popular food group in the city and would never suggest or take any of members here. Better options go to Lucky donuts on Main or Café Molto Bella café on Cambie where there is great friendly neighborhood vibe and service and you can still get a good unique quality beverage and food without all the high maintenance pretentious attitude. We've all boycotted the place in our building as the since the cafe has moved in here a few years ago there's been a rat infestation, a mouse infestation and police calls about the "parties" the management throw for his staff in the alleyway after hours. Management is not community orientated nor have a friendly cooperative bone in their body. read more

Elysian Coffee has the best coffee in the area, and the proprietor knows his coffee and solicits feedback from the customers. Seltzer water is freely available to patrons. The staff are helpful if not always friendly. There are tables inside, outside in front of the cafe, and outside in a secluded area at the side of the cafe. Having these choices is convenient. Since the coffee of late nite cafes like Waves is not nearly as good as Elysian, I wish they were open after 7 pm every day and not just on Fridays and Saturdays. read more

I'm not sure if this is a one-off - it seemed it. Quite retro in feel, it's very relaxed and friendly and quiet. There were a few guys working at their laptops - it's not far from the busy shopping area but much quieter. Not a big range of food on offer but the coffee was good. I came here during my lunch break as a working lunch break as I had a few things that I wanted to send out before the weekend. I was informed after I had placed an order that they don't turn on the wifi until after 4 pm. First time I have heard a coffee shop in the city do this and I have been to a lot of coffee shops this year (see my 100 coffee shops in 52 weeks challenge list). Ok. This place got me with the sparkling water! Screw the coffee! Well the coffee was delicious but really the bubbly water really made me feel special for some reason. I didn't know it had bubbles in it when i grabbed a glass so it was a weird feeling initially but i got over it and got another glass. I like the big windows, the bar, the busyness of it. Elysian has the best baked goods (coffee shop) in Vancouver. They make almost everything inhouse which is great. They have these little round cookies that are delicious, I don't remember what they're called but they're like half spheres. They were voted to have the best cappuccino in Vancouver; but their Americanos are great too. They have a little patio in the back that's hidden. I will never claim to be a coffee aficionado. I indulge occasionally and enjoy it about fifty percent of the time. I used to work at a coffee shop, so I really should have a bit more of a sophisticated taste for it...but I actually genuinely enjoy McDonalds coffee, which is probably verboten in coffee-lover land. Having said that, I can tell when something is reeeeaaaally good. And at Elysian, I always know just how great it is. The staff knows a lot about coffee (from conversations observed between the hipster baristas and hipster (presumed) usuals), but they don't make you feel like a dunce if you don't (like me!) I always get the mocha. Like most plebians, I do typically enjoy a very sweet mocha while simultaneously being aware that it probably, in terms of both quality of the chocolate AND of the coffee, shouldn't be syrupy sweet, love it though I may. But the mochas at Elysian are high quality all the way and you can SO tell. The chocolate and the coffee both have notes of richness and strength along with a muted sweetness...and I think I may honestly enjoy it more than my typical sugar-mochas from Starbucks. The combination of flavours is less overpowering and more prone to be savoured which is probably the point. The food here is also REALLY yummy. Their turkey croissants are warm, flaky and fresh and oh so yum on the go. Next time you're in the neighbourhood definately drop by, even if you're intimidated by the coffee elite. They're much less intimidating than they may appear! And if you are among the coffee elite...you're probably there already. Enjoy coffee lovers (and likers) and Elysian? As usual, I tend to see out every independent roaster and coffee place in a city I visit. North America is always hit or miss, but Vancouver has 1 maybe more SCAA recommend roasters. Anyway, Iv been in here about 3-4 times to try their filter, americano and "flat white". Filter, tasted pretty good, went for a blend of Central American (I think Guatemalan) with some other origin i do not remember. It was good, not great, but good. Americano, was okay, tasted diluted and not that tasty to be honest. Flat white, I tried twice. Was okay, but tasted like a small latte. In fact they don't have on the menu, but seem to make their own incorrect interpretation, as usual with "two sizes". Didn't taste like ristretto either, but I could be wrong. Quite nice, but didn't really taste like a flat white. Milk does wonders ;-). After asking for a flat white, appeared on the bar a (approx) 12 oz + mammoth of a "flat white", hence the conversation about two sizes. Fair do's, she offered to make a smaller one, after I pointed out it should be 5oz! Kudos. Anyway, got charged a rip off $4.75! Won't be going back anymore. Simple review, Best Coffee in Vancouver hands down! They use clover machines offer free fizzy mineral water and have pretty damn good baked good and sammies. I really do not have to say much more. Elysian is the caffeine bench mark in rain city. read more

I'm at the Burrard location but can't find that in yelp. Right across from St. Pauls. $3 for a small coffee almost made me choke. I expected a stellar outstandingly wonderful and rich cuppa. Instead it's very thin and acidic. Staff seem ok, polite. My croissant is fresh and buttery...windows are all open and it's fresh and airy. If a tad chilly! It's not a place I would linger however; basic chairs like I remember from elementary school aren't too comfortable. There's no real atmosphere to enjoy or a reason to sit and savour your coffee. This is my 1st Elysian experience and not sure a reason to come back! read more
