Los Avina is located in the small town of Williston, FL and is the only Tex-Mex/Mexican restaurant…read morein town. It is our go to when I am in town visiting my parents who reside in the RV resort in town. The place is clean, simple, and full of the "Mexican" decorations you. have come to expect. The staff is friendly and attentive. The menu consists of your usual Tex-Mex/Mexican selections. This time, I decided on the "Special Burrito" I was feeling steak and the special burrito is stuffed with steak, onions, green peppers, and topped with nachos cheese, lettuce, tomato, and guacamole. If the words nacho cheese brings up images of that nasty, artificial nacho cheese in a can, you are forgiven. This is queso fresco, the white Mexican cheese that melts great and is delicious. I also had a side of rice and beans. My burrito was hot and tasty. The steak wasn't dried out like it had been sitting in a hotel pan all day. The cheese and guacamole was a nice accompaniment to top the burrito off. The meal came with a chips and salsa. The chips were crisp and salsa, while not my favorite style of salsa, was good and had a slight kick. I highly recommend Los Avina! Take the poor reviews with a grain of salt. Restaurants aren't always on top of their game and especially in today's climate, I think we can give some grace on some shortcomings. Remember, Williston is a small, Florida town that is off the beaten path. You have to be coming here or passing through on one of the U.S. highways that pass through town. They aren't Michelin stared, nor are they Taco Bell. Los Avina is a good, locally owned restaurant that deserves a visit!

I seen a lot of positive reviews and decided to try this Mexican restaurant located in the little,…read moreout of the way town of Williston, Florida. It is a small place filled with perhaps too many tables, but service was friendly and I was in and out in a relatively speedy amount of time. Let me state if you are concerned with the staff wearing masks, perhaps here is not the place for you. Neither my server nor the cooks were making masks. They are charging more for their menu items, my lunch fajitas order was two dollars ($2.00) more and my server did tell me. They are citing increased prices due to COVID-19, but as far as I know prices have settled and it is time for them to decide if they want to simply up their prices or bring them to what is printed on the menu. Plus, every item has had the priced raised, where most places just raised the price of beef items. The salsa and chips were good. The salsa was chunky and flavorful and the chips had a great crunch to them. Their chicken fajitas were not too good. They were on the edge of burned (but still acceptable) and lacking the spices that make it a wonder. Plus it was a bit dry. The rice and refried beans were good, though. So I cannot see myself returning. The food was barely mediocre and while the service was good, I was taken aback a bit by the upcharge.

I am really surprised to see other reviews here which are negative, because I had a great…read moreexperience and I'm very picky about Mexican food. So picky in fact my friend Davis and I go to get Mexican once a week in Ocala because we're not satisfied with any Gainesville or Newberry Mexican restaurants. The ambience here is . . . well, you can see it as festive or garish I guess either one. Very brightly colored Mexican chairs and everything else. Both a radio playing and television on with sound: I don't get why restaurants need to have TVs, I can see it for a sports bar but every single restaurant? Come on. Service however was friendly and prompt. Then there is the food. The chips and salsa were certainly homemade and tasty. I ordered chicken tamales and the three-tamale plate comes with rice, black beans, and the tamales themselves buried beneath a salad of lettuce, tomato, and Mexican cheese. The plate was enormous and every aspect of it fresh and very, very, good. The tamales, especially. Prices are very fair for such quality and large plates of food. Maybe when it first opened things ran a bit rough hence the poor reviews but I was only impressed: first-rate authentic Mexican with a varied menu and very good portions.

Their Birria tacos are also very delicious! Definitely recommend, the only thing that could be improved on in my opinion are the chips.

We had planned on going to a popular Korean restaurant in town but they were short-staffed and…read morebarely acknowledged as we came through the door, so we left and decided to come here instead. Nice save. Parking when they're busy is a bit much but we found a spot around the corner from the door and walked to the entrance. You walk through their outside dining area which is all covered but because it had just rained it was a bit muggy for us so we opted to sit inside. The place has multiple floors and I really like that set up. We were sat upstairs on the second floor right by the top of the stairs. Looking around you can see another floor with a reserved area, tvs showing sports, and their salsa bar, more on that later. No chips and salsa here. Chips and Charro Bean Dip. The beans tasted refried and charred if that makes sense. I lost at rock, paper, scissors so I had to go visit the salsa bar and bring back dips to try. They had some pretty good ones like their homemade chipotle dressing, salsa verde, salsa de molcajete, etc. There wasn't one that we didn't like. Our server was really great and took care of us well. I got a Tamarindo Margarita and to eat the Enchiladas Poblanas (chicken enchiladas with mole sauce, queso fresco, raw onions) with the normal side of refried beans and rice, lettuce, tomato, sour cream, and guac. I got a side of extra cheese because I'm a little rat and dumped it on them. The mole sauce really hit the spot. The last time I had it the sauce was kinda bland but this gave such a nice sweet and earthy flavor. He got the Molcajete Azteca (lava rock bowl with char-grilled chicken, steak, chorizo, shrimp, queso fresco, grilled cactus, onions, avocados, serrano peppers, pork rinds), same sides as my dish. He ''Oooh-ed" and "Ahhh-ed" and "Oh my God, this is so good" so you know he was a happy guy. I can see what all the hype is about. Definitely a place to visit.

We got a seat inside away from the noise, oddly enough in about the same place as we almost always have gotten in this restaurant. I went for a burrito, which is also my standard. It was just as good this time around as it was the last time, and the service was still just as solid. Really, for this kind of Mexican food in Gainesville, this is one of the best places to go as far as I am concerned. We will be returning in the future.
