We went on a Wednesday, where the special was fajitas for $5.99 - such a good deal. My husband got the steak fajitas and I got the camerones a la diabla. The chips and salsa were so good. My wife and I tried this place out for breakfast on a rainy Saturday morning. We've always liked their food but this is the first time (and perhaps last) we'll go there for breakfast. Upon entering we were told to seat ourselves so we sat in a booth. The server proceeded to talk to us in Spanish (neither of us looked Hispanic, BTW) so naturally we responded in English since neither of us spoke passable Spanish. The server spoke to us in English but not quite sure the language barrier was actually breached. The breakfast choices seemed a bit limited and when we asked if they served migas, thinking it might be in a "secret" menu, we were met with blank stares from our server. We placed our order, Huevos Rancheros for me and Mexican-style eggs plate for my wife. The server asked how we want our eggs and I told her I want my eggs over easy and my wife told her scrambled. When our meals were served, it became apparent that there was a communication breakdown. I was served over hard eggs! Who actually eats huevos rancheros with over hard eggs? When I informed our server I ordered my eggs over easy, she had to call somebody else over to communicate with me. I told this other lady I ordered over easy eggs and she said she'll have the eggs cooked and not make me a fresh plate. Fine. Those eggs took a while to materialize and the rest of my meal, as well as my wife's since she waited to eat her meal with me, was getting cold. All in all, a disappointing breakfast. Service was subpar and most of the servers just seemed like they couldn't be bothered. We'll probably still come back for our Mexican fix but will surely avoid this place for breakfast. I love this place so much that I've taken my parents both on different occasions. I tell everyone in Gainesville that wants authentic Mexican food about this place. Truly a gem. I always get the same thing and should probably venture out but it's just so good. I get the taco plate with al pastor which is the pork with pineapple and onion. Love their adjacent grocery store, be sure to check out the meat department tucked in the back and look for the fresh flour tortillas- AMAZING! They have a great bread & pastry selection. So stop in for a meal, then browse the grocery store. Parking looks difficult, but there's a huge parking lot in the back. I was craving Mexican food and decided to try this for dinner. The inside has nice murals painted on the walls and ample seating at either booths or tables. The servers were friendly and attentive. The first night I started the meal with their queso. It was fantastic! I got their shrimp tacos with flour tortillas since it was the special of the day. I could only eat one of the two tacos before getting full. They were filled with shrimp and seasoned so nicely. And, I was impressed that the tortillas were homemade. They were so fresh and delicious. I enjoyed the meal so much, two days later I came back for dinner again. This time I got the combination #1. It had a chile relleno, a cheese enchilada and a flauta. I decided on barbacoa for the meat inside the flauta. I was so impressed again with the quality of the food and the tastes truly hitting the spot. You want authentic Mexican? You got it. La Hacienda is a combination of a mercado and a Mexican restaurant. Typical of what I found in Mexico, so very authentic compared to so many of the Ameri-Mex places. I ordered to go and got a Mega Burrito with steak for dad and a beef Milenesa for myself. The burrito is huge. Easily enough for 2 meals. The milenesa was spot on. Thinly pounded, breaded, and fried. The beans were not overly salty, like most spots in the US and the rice is typical of central Mexico. The ambiance is a lot like a joint in Mexico. Active and loud. It was crowded when I ordered and my understanding is this is the norm. I did not experience table service, but will say the counter staff is easily distracted. I give some leeway, as the place was super crowded and there was a long line at the counter and people constantly calling in to go orders. As for the store, they have a lot of things you cannot find elsewhere. The prices, overall, were cheaper than other supermarkets and you can find cuts of beef not normally served in other supermarkets cheap. These are usually the tougher parts, so you do have to marinate. But they also usually have a nice flavor to them, so it is a bit of give and take. I grabbed some Mexican candy before taking off to Nashville and will share with some friends while I am up there. If you have never had tamarind with chili powder, you should give it a shot. read more

My husband got the $5.99 fajitas and said they were worth it (good value). The adjacent grocery was fun and the flan there is really good. The bad: I ordered the chili rellenos - the batter was mushy with a square piece of unmelted cheese on top of each, the entire meal was luke warm, not hot and flavorless unless you poured salsa from the chips on. Our initially pleasant server never checked on us until she brought the check so we couldn't get the food heated or get more salsa or water. True Mexican restaurant that is attached is to a Mexican grocery store. I ordered a burrito both times was there and the burrito was perfect plus they wrap it like an egg roll which is how a burrito should be wrapped. Unlike the burritos in some of these restaurants that call themselves Mexican restaurant that wrap the burrito and you cannot pick it up with your hands. You should always be able to pick up a burrito with your hands and the inside should not fall out the other end. The service was good and our server always made sure that my drink was always filled. I only had iced team. The restaurant itself was open and as far as noise level, it was normal. Not loud. We went there on a busy day. I would certainly go back again and do recommend this. Also, explore the grocery store attached to it. It's a good play to get anything you need when you're cooking a Mexican dish.
