On a whim on Friday night we stopped at Don Pepe's Mexican restaurant in Dunnellon for dinner. You know going in it's a converted house so the weird configuration isn't a surprise - loaded with very stereotypical decorations. We were promptly seated and our drink orders taken. Pretty standard fare for the complimentary chips and salsa. The queso was nothing special but the service was very friendly. The chicken chimichangas were very good (well seasoned) and I wish you could hear the fajita sizzling in my picture and smell it. Wow! Very good flavors for the most part - in some ways, flavors that rival perennial favorites in Ocala. read more

Food was not just awful, but it was gross. I ordered shrimp quesadillas and got shrimp with some horrible barbecue sauce on it, some lettuce and tomatoe, and a quesadilla shell. Three bites into it, and I was entirely repulsed. The server replaced it with beef tacos that were greasy and unedible. When I was there last year, my chicken enchaladas had a piece of chicken neck in them. That should have been enough to never come back. I'm now totally grossed out by this place and will never go back. Even Taco Bell would be a better option. Service was marginal at best. Server would not adjust the bill to reflect the cost of the tacos versus the shrimp quesadillas. Ambiance is cute, but you can't fill your stomach with ambiance. The pickings are slim for restaurants in Dunnellon, but I'll never go back to Don Pepe's. read more

Doors open 5pm, I went in when they opened to placeTo Go with family in the car. 5 other small groups came and got seated as I placed my order. 40 minutes later when the waitress finally brought out the To Go bags, the original 5 tables plus 2 more tables and 1 later To Go already had their dinners, and one of the original 5 were literally finished and walking out the door. 25 mile drive home and found out they missed an entire side item for my guest, and one entree had a long black hair laying across the entire enchilada. We thought being a small quaint restaurant, the food might be authentic. We have vised multiple Mexican restaurants coast to coast. Service was great but my food was horrible! I ordered cheese enchiladas (can't mess that up) and a Chile relleno, cheese only ( I love cheese!!). Our food was a bit slow coming out but was hot. The cheese enchiladas consisted of only Queso cheese dip like for chips, not cheddar or any real cheese, and no enchilada sauce, with more Queso cheese poured on top. It was 1 big pile of gooey mush. It was hard to distinguish what was cheese or corn tortilla. Then the relleno arrived a bit later, same issue. It appeared to have been deep fried stuffed with gooey dip, not cheese. Generally, the Chile poblano pepper is battered and deep fried, not the relleno ( I hate eggs!). The pepper was so mushy, I couldn't even pick it up with a fork or even attempt to cut it. The heavy egg battered gooey much fell off to the side. What made me write this review is when a server picks up the plates and sees the meal has not been touched, the customer is typically asked if anything was wrong. Not the case here. My husband ordered a chicken burrito and said it was good. We only left a 22% tip versus at least 50%. which we do when the food and the service are top notch. Won't be visiting this restaurant again. Also, you would think the staff would wear some sort of consistent attire, not concert of off the wall tees. read more

While on a road trip to northern florida, I came across this place and gave it a shot. We ordered takeout and the young lady over the phone didn't have the best attitude but took our order and was friendly during pick up. The food was alright. Some of the food felt like none of it was fresh. The burrito and quesadilla were alright, definitely not the best. The guacamole was a really weird color and had to many tomato slices to be considered traditional. The salsa was good though. Not the best option. read more

I went to Don Pepe a few years ago and the food was okay nothing spectacular. A year or so I again went again with my girlfriend. We were put at a table next to the entrance to the bathroom, which in my opinion was the worst table in this restaurant. We decided to move one table away. The waiter or more likely the owner came over to what I thought was to take our order but instead h took our menus place setting and left and never returned without ever saying a word. My girlfriend and I had no choice but to leave. A year after this incident I went there by myself and asked the owner if he remembered the event he didn't. So I sat down ate nondescript food and left. I gave one star mainly because of service and food just average food. If I didn't give any stars then I didn't want anyone reading this to think I forgot. There are a few much superior Mexican restaurants with an hours drive. read more

If you were driving through Dunellon and miss the Mexican Food sign out front, you might not even know that Don Pepe's was there. However, a simple turn into their parking lot and a walk onto their porch leads you to a land far away from this quaint Florida town. The walls are covered with artwork and photos. Mexican dolls hang from the ceiling and authentic smells come from the kitchen and dining room. The waiter comes to the tables with tortilla chips and salsa, but be sure to tell them to bring some queso. My wife had the quesadillas and although she thought they were good, she thought they could use some more chicken. I had the tacos al carbon. As you can see from the plate, it was a ton of food. From the tacos to the beans to the rice to the "salad," I had enough for dinner as well as lunch tomorrow! The food was good and the service was quick. My husband and I go to your restaurant for lunch once a week. We have been going to Don Pepe for years. This Friday, since I knew what I wanted, because I order the same thing every week, I mentioned to the waiter that I knew what I wanted. He appeared annoyed and after a while took my order. My order was delivered wrong. I patiently waited more than 25 minutes to get the right food. It never arrived. After this long wait, I decided I've waited long enough and I wanted to pay for what my husband ate, for my drink and leave. The steak enchilada finally arrived in a to go box. When I told the waiter that I no longer wanted the enchilada, since I wanted to eat it there, the waiter proceeded to argue with me and tell me that I had an attitude and that I was impatient. The waiter could not see why I was upset for waiting so long for my order to be fixed and proceeded to argue with me at the register. When I told him that I would not be returning there, he quickly indicated that that was my choice and that he could not understand why I was upset. I received no apology and instead left very unsatisfied and annoyed. It is clear that he does not own that restaurant and doesn't care to lose a regular, local customer and all the business that will be lost due to word of mouth. read more

We ordered from Don Pepe over the weekend during a trip to Dunnellon. We were a large party (8 person order) and did a take out order. Everything was correct in the order when we picked it up. We all enjoyed our dishes, chips, and queso. Some of the dishes we ordered: beef tacos, chicken burrito, chicken chimichangas, chicken enchiladas, kids cheese quesadilla, kids taco, two taco and enchilada combos. We have been coming to this restaurant for over a year and normally the food and service is great. The food is still great! But today we had a woman server and the attitude and lack of attention was unbelievable. The waiter that took our drink order and who is always there ended up serving our food. The queso we ordered was cold by the time she checked on us and asked if we wanted more chips. My husband got his food, when I didn't have mine for another 5 minutes or so his was cold. The waitress did not ask if the food was OK, she came to the table twice and had to see he wasn't eating. I asked for a box, she brought the box and did not ask if my husband wanted a box. He left his whole meal. When you say thank you and get a grunt in reply is beyond unprofessional. We end with my husband saying we will not be going back. The grill smells so good from the street/parking lot. Atmosphere was family friendly. We were seated quickly, but service was a little slow thereafter (no offers to refill our drinks nor replenish the free chips and salsa). We had to request utensils. However, if those things do not bother you (they don't bother us when the food is worth it), this place is worth any wait.
