We had just hiked the Meyers Beach Sea Cave Trail, and were continuing our drive along Hwy 13 on the Wisconsin Scenic Byway. We had just reached Herbster, as my husband commented that "it would be great to have some ice cream right now." I had noticed a roadside sign only a a few moments earlier with an ice cream cone so we turned around.
The parking lot in front of the building was full, so we parked on the side. We entered and left the closest door, confused to find a quite busy bar. A helpful patron was outside, and he directed us to the second door for the general store. (They're connected).
The small general store, established in 2022, is bright and cheery, and sells sweatshirts, t-shirts, souvenirs, cold drinks, and ice cream! There were perhaps 10-12 flavors, which are hand-dipped by the woman behind the counter. I opted for a single scoop of raspberry truffle in a cake cone, while my husband chose pistachio nut in a cup. ($3.50 each). We were tempted by some of the other flavors, including mint chocolate chip and moose tracks. Double scoops were $4.50; waffle cones were available for +$1.00. Service was friendly. The ice cream was good.
We took our ice cream outside to eat. There are three sets of cute patio-style furniture lined up along the front of the store -- small round tables with two chairs each. A nice patriotic touch is that each set is painted red, white, or blue. One small distraction is that the parking lot is between relatively quiet Hwy 63 and the tables, so our "view" was of a number of dusty ATVs and pick up trucks from patrons in the bar. A recommendation for the owners would be to encourage bar patrons to park on the side to make it easier for passers-by to more easily notice the general store. read more
