My favorite items from Elotes Don Toño are Asada street tacos (I like to add avocado for a small fee), Elotes on the cob or in a cup for convenience, the Dorinachos with corn is also another delicious choice. I call ahead my orders to get it when I arrive. It gives them some time to prepare it. They are always friendly and helpful on the phone. They are a food truck with an enclosed eating area, which is much appreciated. The atmosphere helps you relax for a bit knowing that you're protected from the elements. Coming from a household with a mother from Mexico and a father from south Texas, I tend to have high expectations for Latin food trucks/restaurants. Overall their food was up to par compared to home cooked meals, the only thing that was lacking was the flavor. There was definitely flavor but I would personally like a little more spices added into the mix. I also thought that their red sauce was a little over the top on spice without the flavor, on a high note their verde salsa had great flavor and the perfect amount of spice. Their agua Fresca specifically their Jamaica (hibiscus) was absolutely amazing!! Lastly the service was great and very nice! The street tacos here cost about $2.10 each, and I spent well over $20 on them during my visit, which probably says all that needs to be said about their deliciousness. I also added a quesadilla to my order, which was similarly terrific. And, unlike some food trucks, which tend to be stingy with extras, I was delighted to note Elotes Don Tono spared no expense when it came to cheese or avocado. So, if my review of the food itself is so glowing, what's up with the four star review? The answer to that question lies in wait time, which is substantial, and certainly more than one would expect from a food truck parked next to one of the city's worst Wal-Mart locations. I was just about the only customer present during my visit, and still waited over 20 minutes for my food to be prepared. This is legit food truck fare--completely worth checking out, wherever they are. Currently it's in front of the Neighborhood Market on Glenstone with the carport out front. I am ashamed/not ashamed that I order their Dorinachos in multiples...it's your basic idea of a walking taco in a little Doritos bag, but bumped to a ten with their ingredients. I get the carne, and they are not stingy with the toppings. That little chip bag is filled to the top with crema, cotija, jalapenos, and the most delicious chopped meat I've had in ages. You can't be in a hurry--you give your order, pay, and then they shut the window in your face. Hang out for a bit, watch the cars go by, and listen for them to call out your order. I ordered 2 carne asada tacos, 2 carnitas tacos, a Mexican corn and a steak quesadilla for my daughter and they were all good! The quesadilla was phenomenal though. All that and 2 bottled water was $23. Not bad and I tipped of course. There were 2 people ahead of us when we got there so the wait was a bit long. Probably want to say 25-30 minutes and we ended up eating outside. I like their salsa verde sauce. It was just enough spice for me. But everything definitely tasted fresh. This place is AWESOME! The hubs and I moved to Springfield from Los Angeles 6 months ago, and had not found good AUTHENTIC street tacos. We were used to having a taco cart on every corner and set up outside a bar at midnight to help soak up the alcohol you just consumed. This place has them! And the elote in a cup is amazing, especially on a cold day. It is comfort in a cup. Highly reccomend! Now, mind you, these are street tacos, meaning they are small, 3-biters that consist of meat, raw onion and cilantro, served with a fresh lime wedge to season and homemade salsa. They will not contain cheese, lettuce, sour cream, etc. Not sure, but you could probably, for a fee, order that extra. But, these are true street tacos: meat is seasoned beautifully and the doubled up corn tortilla is grilled to warm perfection so it supports the meat, not too soggy, yet chewy and delicious. Wow.... So amazing. The burritos are more Torpedo-esk, the tacos are mini, the tamales are average size and the quesadilla's are and 8 inch tortilla flipped over, so the portions are a little small. But the flavor is to die for. Finally a place I can go when I crave good simple Mexican food. Then the spicy corn on the cob...incredible flavor.
