So I can only comment on a wedding event hair styling as I'm not a regular client to this studio. I got my hair done here for a wedding on a Saturday morning and I requested a cute little half up , down style and showed a photo. The hair was to be fully pulled up and tied together with curls. The stylist made the curls and pinned the hair on my left side and partially pinned some hair on the right but didn't tie it together. It was a really weird hair style and she did it all in 35 mins which was fine but it wasn't what I asked for. Nice but for what she did she charged $90! This is insane for a style only with very minimal complexity. Negative star for not getting what I asked and for being overpriced for what I got. read more

I came here a couple of weeks ago for a cut and balayage and just wanted to share my experience as it turned out to not be good at all. I reached out through the salon's "contact us" form to share my experience a week ago and have not heard back so I thought I would share here to prevent this from happening to others in the future. Overall, my stylist was nice, but later that evening I realized that the color she did started halfway down my head on the sides and back of my head leaving about 6 inches of my dark natural color exposed, so I ended up having to go to a different salon last minute to get it fixed since it looked so bad and I had a trip that weekend. I am naturally brunette and had gone in shooting to achieve a solid dark blonde color. We decided that a balayage was the right route to take since I wanted my hair to be more of a solid color instead of pieces of my hair being highlighted, and had talked about making it blend into my natural color at my roots so that once my roots grow out it wouldn't be a harsh line. The end result that I noticed at home later that evening did not "blend" into my roots, as there was indeed a very harsh line where my hair was bleached blonde that was lower and lower towards the back of my head creating a stark contrast between my natural color and the blonde. I did not notice this at the salon because she didn't show me the back of my head and from the front, I couldn't tell the extent of the situation since she had highlighted my money pieces. I later took photos and saw that the balayage color started about halfway down my head from my root on the sides and back of my head exposing anywhere between 3 to 6 inches of my natural untouched solid dark brown color, making it look like I had my hair bleached blonde over a year ago and had only had my money pieces touched up more recently. Even if my natural color wasn't as dark as it is I still would have assumed that some highlights are brought up to the root for a seamless transition instead of leaving that much root exposed. I don't think anyone purposefully goes to get their hair done with the intent of making it look like it hasn't been touched up for months. It looked like a bowl-cut technique was used to decide where to begin painting the bleach (see the attached). I will also attach the inspiration photo I showed the stylist for reference. I liked that inspo photo because the girl looked like her natural color at the top was very close to my natural color and that it blended into the blonde color very seamlessly. After I noticed how bad my hair looked, I had remembered that before we started, Lindsay had mentioned something about starting with a full balayage and then going back through and adding in highlights to blend the new color into my roots. If that had happened it probably would have made the harsh line halfway down my head less of an issue, so I wonder if she just forgot about that plan, although I don't know how she could have thought the color starting five inches down looked okay in the end. I have only had my colored a handful of times in college so I am not familiar with the various techniques used, which is why I hadn't noticed that she was starting the color that far down my hair strands, or else I would have asked. She explained that she was using a teasing technique to mix some of my natural color into the blonde, but I don't think that using that necessitates not blending the color up to my root and starting that far down on the hair. Even if she was shooting for a more "lived-in" appearance, I still would think there would be at least a handful of highlights pulled up to the root to gradually combine the blond with my natural color. I'm usually not one to complain or be confrontational and my intention is not to hurt my stylist's feelings, but I thought I'd share because this was not the service I thought I was receiving for spending $500 here (and I then had to spend that much again in order to get it fixed - which was definitely not in my budget this month) and it was a bummer that I hadn't realized until later that evening because I was not shown the back or sides of my hair. This is a learning lesson for me and I will never be back. I do not recommend coming here. [The first photo is the inspiration photo I showed the Elements Salon hair stylist, the second photo was taken the day after my Elements appointment by the hairdresser who fixed my hair before he fixed it, and the last two are the photos I took a few hours after my appointment at Elements Salon after realizing what had happened. I was searching for an Aveda hair salon close to me and came upon this place. This was my 6 or 7th hair salon since moving to houston and I have been going now for about 4 years. So glad I found this place. Michaela is great, she doesn't try to up-sell you on things but has great suggestions. I've had everything from every-day hair cuts to extensions and she does a great job. I was in search for a new salon and searched Yelp and after reading several reviews called and made an appt. I called in the afternoon on a Thurs and asked first available and they were able to get me in at 9am Saturday for a cut and color. I was trying to stay under $150 for hair cut and hair color and when i looked up prices they said $75 color and $65 cut so i thought great. I also verified this over the phone. I met with my colorist and talked in great detail about what i wanted. I was looking for low lights for contrast to my dark brown hair. I told her I just wanted a partial low light. She colored my hair which came out more blended brown but I know its hard to match colors to what someone else has done before. I had to wait a little for my stylist to cut my hair but they were very good about communicating what was going on. In the mean time a guy came over and said you get a hand massage with color service. It was a nice treat and he was very nice. So now the cut- the stylist Jeff was really nice. I explained i wanted something different but not to short and not a "bob". Well my hair came out a little shorter than expected and in a "bob" style. I wasnt sure how to feel about it at first but its growing on me. When i checked out the total came to $166 before i got some product from the shelf. Im not sure where the extra $26 came from and people were waiting behind me so I was too embarassed to ask. Overall I would say it was a good experience a little pricier then I expected but I will probably go back. read more

I've come here for haircuts for several years. They do an excellent job and throw in perks like a drink, scalp massage, etc. My last cut was with Brandon, and two weeks out it still looks awesome. So disappointed. I went here to try having my hair colored at a salon for the first time. I just wanted to get my color even after doing it myself for a long time. I was very skeptical that the color was as dark as I wanted, but my stylist insisted it was the right shade. Once done and dry, it was indeed too light and just a flat, dull brown. Upon getting home I could see clear lines where the new dye didn't properly color my new growth. And my color is still uneven because she didn't color it dark enough. I will have to redo it myself now. The dye was also left on my head so long that my scalp has been irritated and sore all day. I also got a cut, which was fine (hence two stars). The dye job is fixable, but I'm upset I spent $100 for something I will have to fix myself with a box dye. I'm not going to make the mistake of bothering with hair color at a salon again. I'm having a tough time with this review. I intentionally sought out an Aveda salon. I recently discovered how much longer my red lasts with their color. I booked an appointment for color and TRIM. The color and low lights are impressive. 5/5 stars easy for their color expert! The trim though... oh my. I showed a photo of my old hairstyle I'm working back toward. I explained that I wanted my choppy layers smoothed out. I also very intentionally said I only wanted a TRIM and that I often ask for shorter than I really want, and I'd rather her err on cutting less than more. I dozed off a bit while she was CUTTING. It was so relaxing. (Pro.) But I unfortunately didn't notice how much hair was gone! I opened my eyes and noticed the hair on my left side was super short. Then I looked on the ground and saw bits of hair that were easily 2 inches long. I have medium length hair. That's not a trim! She was nearly finished, and I was too terrified to correct her, for fear more damage would occur. She finished cleaning up. I was nearly in tears. I've had hair be not quite perfect but never this far off! I was nearly in tears. I paid and left. When I got home, I noticed that my part ended up in a different place than we'd originally planned and the right back part of my hair is longer than the left. I have emo boy hair. I absolutely hate it. (Con con con.) Despite the amazing color, I'll never go back. read more

She knows my hair better than I do and she always takes painstakingly great care of me and my tresses! I really enjoyed my first visit and am looking forward to my next hair did. I love this place! The staff is very friendly. I've been here twice, and both times, Michaela cut my hair. She's amazing! Both times I printed some pictures of the style I wanted - she works well with pictures. She looked at the pictures and told me what she saw, to make sure we were seeing the same thing. I was (and still am) in the market for a place to get my hair colored, and so, seeing a Yelp promo for 20% off a first visit, I figured this place was as good as any other. The salon's quiet, as there are only four or five hairdressers, and they don't all have appointments at the same time. Only for part of the time that I was there was another hairdresser working. Dana had a Pacific Northwest pixie thing going on, and, as she did my hair. I briefly contemplated the awesome hairdresser-client relationship we might have--talking about organic food, getting recommendations for co-ops, and recounting the latest finds at the flea market. When she was done, she told me I could sit in the chair or move to the couch. I moved to the couch, and watched as she greeted someone enthusiastically. My hair is a very precious thing (or mass of things), so my mind went to the safest option and thought that that person might be a friend. Then, Dana started straight ironing the person's hair, so, I thought, "Hey, that won't take long. No biggie." Then, she started putting foils in that person's hair. I asked the person at the front desk (one of the owners) how much longer it'd take for my hair to get done. He didn't know. He asked Dana. She asked for the time, and then replied, "Oh, about five minutes." Yikes. So, she wasn't keeping track, and not to the minute, either? In my head, I kept thinking, "I will be totally cool with it if my hair turns out the way I want it to." Someone else comes and washes my hair, which, I thought was strange, as it's standard for the hairdresser to wash your hair and check how the color turned out. Okay, so maybe Dana would check my hair as she blew it dry. No, the same person blew my hair sorta dry, and then asked if my hair turned out. I was pretty much in the mindset of, "I want to leave ASAP," so I said it was fine. When I got to my car, I realized my hair, which had brown highlights in it before, now looked like my original hair color, black (well, technically a very, very dark brown), when I'd wanted a chocolate brown. I went back in, told one of the owners, and the other owner sat me down in a chair and examined my hair. Only then did Dana ask how my hair had turned out. They offered to redo my hair, and I said I'd reschedule, as it'd take a while (gotta give time for my hair to recuperate before it can do crazy stuff). I called later to explain that it had been confusing and nerve-wracking to get no contact with my initial hairdresser, and one of the owners explained that, since it's a small salon, they work in teams. Then, I asked, if the person who washed my hair was a hairdresser, how did she not know that my hair color wasn't the shade I'd wanted? Apparently, when handing off clients, they check for tone and clarity, but not the shade (well, not if it's not communicated). I thought about getting my hair redone at Elements, but then I realized I wouldn't want to put myself through that experience again. read more

Elements is a great salon. I love that it is nestled in my neighborhood and within easy walking distance. Rob is the owner, also cuts hair and has great expertise. In fact, he regularly trains others in haircutting. The staff is very friendly and the place has a great vibe, a comfy, artsy, and semi-industrial space. They now send an email confirmation for appointments that is very helpful. You always get a great head and neck massage before the shampooing, which is delicious. The place has huge windows so it is light-filled and you feel like you are getting your haircut in the outdoors. It is down to earth and very comfortable. I highly recommend it! read more

After a long and tiring search on Yelp for a good salon in Houston I decided to take a chance and try Elements. I had a friend that had come in for a cut and she loved it. After a combination of good reviews and a friend's advice I decided to make an appointment. I have curly hair and I am VERY picky about where I get my hair cut. I had an awful experience in college while on the hunt for a new stylist and my hair ended up looking like a curly lion's mane. Needless to say I was very nervous. When I called the salon I wasn't sure who to book with and I asked for someone that can work with curly hair. I ended up with an appt with Tarah and she did a great job! I got tons of compliments after I left the salon, because she did an awesome job styling it too. I was still a bit nervous about washing it and letting the curls loose but it ended up looking great curly! I am so excited to have found a good salon in Houston that isn't ridiculously expensive. i've been looking for the perfect place to get my hair done in houston and FINALLY found it! element salon is exactly what i was looking for--the salon has a very cool vibe. it has huge windows and a very earthy/minimal interior space that is so peaceful and relaxing. the stylists are all so friendly. rob cut/colored my hair, michaela massaged my hands while my color was processing, and i chatted with tarah and ana the whole time. i brought a picture in for inspiration, but my hair turned out better than the picture! rob took the time to not only give me a great cut/style, but he also explained to me exactly how to blow dry and style my hair so that i can do it myself! elements salon was an overall wonderful experience and now i'm trying to make an excuse to go back! read more

Finally! I was referred to Nicole Nuncio at Elements by a friend of mine and I've never been happier. I've always had trouble explaining how I wanted my hair to look (other than just pointing to some picture), but with her being so intuitive (and also blessed with the challenge of having curly hair!) the results were amazing! Now, I cannot imagine going anywhere else. Also the salon is such a nice departure from the typical high end places I've tried before. I've been to Michaela 4 times (every 8-9 weeks) and I think she is capable, personable and good, if you like the standard, trendy cut. She was recommended to me by a friend whose hair I like and she gives me the same or very similar hair cut she gives my friend, despite me having very different hair, no matter what I ask for and what photos I show. I wasn't asking for something vastly different but different enough because I have different hair and edgier taste (none of the photos I've shown her were blunt cuts but I got a blunt cut every time). With the hair cut she gives me I have to spend 15 minutes blowdrying and styling for it to look good but it was the "standard trendy cut" so many women have so I lived with it because it was too much trouble finding another hairdresser. And Michaela is likeable enough. All 4 times I've either been early, on time or no more than 3 minutes late. On my 5th visit I was running late. Being winter break still, I had to bring my 8-year old son with me, so that made getting out the door more challenging as he wanted certain toys and books to take with him to keep himself busy (all moms understand how sometimes kids can make you late). Also it was raining hard and slow on the 610. According to my iphone I was 14 minutes late and even though I had arrived at the salon and was parked out back, while I was still on the phone with the receptionist, she said Michaela was still going to cancel my appointment. Wow, even doctor's offices are more forgiving! Hairdressers need things just perfect, I guess. Well, she gave me the push I needed to go elsewhere. Go to Michaela if you like the standard trendy blunt cut with subtle layers and slight waves. She does a good job on that cut (if you have the right hair) and it keeps her busy enough to not care about customer retention but don't ask for anything different. And don't be late. read more

As long as I'm in Houston, I will not visit any other salon! I relocated to H town 2 yrs ago, and was dreading the process of finding a new salon. I knew I wanted an Aveda salon (best line of products ever!) so I looked up salons in the area. By chance Elements was close to me, so I tried it. Since my first visit I've come back for all my hair care needs and always left more than satisfied with nothing left to be desired :) Tarah is simply the best! She's been highlighting my hair since I moved, and helped me get the perfect color leading up to my wedding. She did a great trial run of my wedding hairstyle (I would have had her do my hair for the big day, but we had a destination wedding, and trust me if we had enough in the budget I would have taken her with me!) Regardless, she's great at getting your hair to look its best for everyday or the most important day of your life :) After the wedding, she helped me go from perfect blonde highlights to a dramatic color change to chocolate brown-I loved both looks, thanks to her wonderful ability to get the right shade/color for you. The salon itself is unassuming, pleasantly calming and thankfully unpretentious. You'll get a relaxing hand massage or scalp massage depending on your service, and a fantastic shampoo :) Finding a salon inside the loop that offers this level of service using Aveda products is pretty much unheard of. I feel bad for those that had a unsatisfying experience, I for one always look forward to my afternoon of pampering at Elements :) read more

Oh bajeezus! I cannot believe i have not reviewed this salon yet! All I can say about how I feel after leaving Elements is ahhhhhmazing. So here's my story, explaining how much I love love love Ana Strauss and Tarah Schumske.To me, Houston is a small town with a whole bunch of people in it and I was having a heck of a time finding a salon that a) I wouldn't have to sell my organs to afford and b) wouldn't leave me with a joke of a mop. I had been going to the same guys for 7 years and had loved them, but unfortunately, their growing business made my salon experience no longer enjoyable and my hair looked it. Sad day. Anywho, I begin my search... At a Super Bowl party this year there was a girl there who had fabulous hair. In an effort to find the salon producing such fantabulous results I find out where she goes....her response: the Woodlands. Argh! But alas, she tells me they have a salon in midtown, Dionysus, and Ana is the person to go to. I log in to my trusty yelp account and sure enough, Ana has amazing reviews. Call and book an appointment, done! So excited!!! A week before my appointment, I call to confirm the time at which point I am informed that Ana no longer works there, but they'll be getting another colorist and will be changing my appointment to this newbee. Um no, I made the appointment with Ana, not the salon. Back to the drawing board. Another month goes by.....oh, I forgot to mention the most important part! I have hair that rivals Cousin It. Long long long and a lot of it. It's naturally pretty dark brown and, TAH DAH, I want my hair super bright blonde. No easy task. My hair has fallen victim to such hues as orange, green, purple, and white in my relentless search to find an amazing colorist. Okay, back to my story, so as I was saying, it's been a month and the roots are looking pretty special (and by special, I mean quite "Whiskey Tango"). I'm at my favorite happy hour spot and the owner, whom I love, pokes a little fun at my lack of attention to my head at this point and suggests that I go see Tarah, who at this point is sitting on the patio at said watering hole. Could it be? Could I have really found someone that can fix this beast of hair?!?! I go talk to her and show her my hair and ask if there's hope. When she didn't channel her inner-cardiologist and announce "call it!" I was relieved. She was most enthusiastic about fixing my hair, but was nice enough to say "I can do it, but you'll want to see Ana, she's much faster and you'll love her." Wait! Ana? THE Ana that I have been searching for since February?!?! Yes!!! Oh my goodness, welcome to cloud 9. So, the rest is history, I have been seeing Ana (for color) and Tarah (for cut....B.T.Dub, my cut is amazing, which is no easy task for long hair) for months now. I actually have an appointment on Tuesday. Woohooo! I get so many compliments on my hair! It's so nice to know that the search for the perfect salon is over.
