Our roof replacement was absolutely one of the worst experiences of my life as a homeowner. I've waited to write this review because the experience was traumatic. Even though the crew made good on ALL of the problems *they created* during the process, it was owner Ben's behavior that leaves me at a loss for words. During the consult Ben was cordial and informative. It was an easy choice as we had seen his work around the neighborhood. But wow, when he returned to start the job, he was a completely different man. Rude and cold. It was clear that all he cared about was lining his pockets and we were just another job for him. A roof tear off and replacement is no joke! He was difficult with all of the problems his crew created. Wrong gutters, broken garage light, mess everywhere and a leak during a rain storm that the crew hadn't tarped for even though I warned them! After completion we had another major leak due to incorrect flashing. Ben was incredibly difficult and sour with us when we reached out to him. I will never know why the stars didn't line up for us. We bought a new roof and in return we got vitriol directed at us for problems we didn't create. Nice roof, though. No stars should be given. read more

We opted to replace our 23-year-old roof before any noticeable leaks and talked to an Elements rep at the Portland Home Show. Bottom line: We have a good-looking roof and a cleaned-up yard. During the process, Elements discovered--and showed us--that nearly all our roof decking (the plywood sheet layer) was warped and needed to be replaced. So, we ended up paying nearly twice as much as originally quoted. (Initial inspections never find this level of "uh oh." It would have happened with any other roofer.) Things we liked/appreciated: 1) Quick and thorough responses to our questions - especially detailed questions that helped me compare one bid with another; 2) Ease of reaching and communicating with Jessica, the Operations Manager, who worked with us to schedule our job; 3) Quick and courteous responses from Ben, as well as excellent communication between Ben and the work crew; 4) Ben's final walk-through with us was on time and thorough. To consider: Elements involved multiple team members, which sometimes was great and other times resulted in crossed wires. They had to reschedule our initial inspection, and sadly we didn't speak the same language as the inspector who arrived on the revised date. (The written report was clear and thorough, though.) All in all, replacing a roof is a stressful act of trust for the homeowner. Elements did a solid job for us. read more

My experience mirrors Melissa's review almost precisely and our projects seem to have completed around the same time: early springtime 2024 In short, the quality of the work is suspect and integrity of the business is poor; they will not honor warranty work and the words that describe what they're selling beyond the technical actually means something to me. The words 'no leak guarantee' and 'whole roof reconditioning' mean something to me. Furthermore, a warranty of should the roof leak within 24 months of repairs, the amount paid for repairs will be deducted from the price of a new roof sounds like a pretty good deal, unfortunately, the business won't honor it and they'll give you the run around while you continue to chase for a response. It took months and here we are. With that said, I have a new roof after Elements Roofing's quote read I didn't need one; turns out I did Check out Prime Exteriors NW, they installed a whole new roof within 12 months of my initial Elements Roofing repairs and they started work within days of Elements Roofing denying my warranty consideration request earlier this year. Prime Exteriors NW will also inspect within your attic, around your chimney, and if your results are like mine, they'll do a quality job with forthright pricing I hope you have a 'no leak guarantee' day! read more

Elements Roofing company sold me a "no leak guarantee" warranty extension for a roof they previously installed on a small commercial building. I purchased the warranty since they were familiar with the roof, but I should have first looked into their capabilities. It turns out that either they (1) no longer have roofers who know how to install and repair commercial roofs or (2) no longer have the financial capability to make good on the warranty. After several occurrences of a very major leak, the owner of the company told me that the leak I was having was not covered under the warranty. He charged thousands more for the fix. When this 'fix' did nothing to address the leak, he stopped returning my calls. While the office did return my calls and scheduled roofers to come out to make the repair, no roofers ever arrived for the appointments they scheduled. After months of leaks and dozens of phone calls, I lost confidence in their ability to make this right. I hired a real commercial roofing company to investigate the leak and they easily found and repaired the issue. They found lots of other things on the roof that pointed to Elements Roofing being out of their element when it comes to commercial roofs, including residential roofing components that should never be used for flat commercial roofs. In summary: While their office personnel may be nice, I would not recommend this company for any roofing project more complex than a simple nail pop on a residential house. And if they try to sell you the opportunity to purchase a warranty: don't walk, run! read more

One of the worst customer experiences I've ever had to deal with. And I've been customer service for over 30 years. They damaged my birdcage screening in two spots and refused to fix it for a couple of months claiming it was old spline. Finally got them to send someone to repair it. Because the screen was damaged and left open, several nails got in my pool and left rust stains all over. They asked for photos of the nails I did find and the spots so those were sent over and they claimed it was black mold. I didn't realize vitamin C gets rid of black mold. Interesting. They want me to have my water tested in order to maybe get help. Their foreman also said they may have to take down the gutters but they'd get someone out to put them back up after the job was finished. They never did that because the contract says the owner is responsible for that part. Not happy to say the least. read more

I'm very picky about everything in life, especially who works on my property. Elements schedule an inspection, showed up on time, and left before I even knew it. Later that day I received a very detailed inspection report including images and alternate pricing giving me options and solutions. I am visiting my Brother in SE Portland. He's not a Yelper so I am compelled to share this review on his behalf... His home has developed a roof leak and now that it has been dry most of the summer I encouraged him to get a roof inspection and deal with the trouble before the rainy season starts up. We truly expected a bid for a new roof and a huge bill. After finding Elements Roofing on Angie's List and hearing about the company from my brother's neighbor in SE Portland we had Ben Crofut, who runs and owns the company come out and inspect the roof. Ben showed up this morning and did a thorough roof inspection, provided pictures of the entire roof, attic space, and all of the areas of concern. He also let us know the damage was less extensive than we imagined and is sending a crew later this week to make repairs to some faulty flashing that has caused the leak! We even pushed the issue of needing a new roof, and we were told that he could easily certify that after the repairs were made, the roof would last beyond five years. It's not often that I am surprised and impressed with honest customer service. This is one time I am really happy to share a contractor who is honest, dependable, and has great integrity as a roofer. My bother could have easily shelled out five or six thousand dollars on a new roof and instead he is paying a few hundred bucks to get his leak completely fixed. During the recent ice storm a tree fell and punctured my PVC roof. I also had fireplace damage due the lack of proper flashing. I talked with 3 roofing companies and settled on Elements. Ben, the owner came out told me he could have a crew out that day to patch up the holes in the roof since it was going to rain later in the evening. The guys showed up patched up the roof and fireplace perfectly. It was a huge relief. They came back later and applied a protective coating that came with a guarantee for 15 years. Our skylight started leaking like a waterfall during the recent rains. We had to put down buckets and plastic sheeting to contain it all. We needed help FAST. I found Elements Roofing via Google. They came out the same day--repeat: the same day--and did a temporary fix that held until they could get back the next day with a proper sized replacement skylight and additional materials needed for some ancillary repairs. A team worked for about four hours, much of that while it was raining, and got the job done. It was a huge relief to have found an outfit that could do this work so quickly and competently. Do not trust this company, like other reviewers have stated, they will give you a bid and then double it, we ended up having to pay twice as much for our roof than we should have. They did give us a little money back when we complained over and over but the project was for a very small house and should not have been so expensive. We even talked to other roofers after the event and they all said we were way over charged by at least five thousand dollars. I have waited awhile to post this because it was a very emotional experience, we had our roof replaced in 2012, took me that long to get over it. The day after I spoke with their extremely pleasant and helpful secretary got me a packet and sample the next day. So I decided to go into contract with them. Then about a week or two later things got interesting. Here is where my story gets crazy the week before my schedule date due to a structural issue that i never knew i had the eve over my flat fell completely off. I have never done a review but my experience with this company has been disasterous (for me) and it is the last and only thing I can do. I had to call a couple of times to get them to come out and do an estimate. A man named Ben came out and was very nice and seemed helpful and said things like "bless you". I trusted him. He gave me a bid that to me was huge as my home is only 1050 square feet but I gave a deposit and they told me I could look on line and see the list of jobs and where I was on that list. I was never on a list. After a couple of weeks Brittany called me out of the blue and asked if they could do it the next day. They came on a Friday. The crew took off my entire roof and then Ben came and told me that it was going to cost almost double the bid. This time he seemed nervous and had a different demeanor. He must have used the "F" word 8 or 10 times. It seemed so unprofessional and disrespecful to me as I am an elderly lady. He said they had changed the code , something about the nails they had to use would just pull out of the plywood on my roof and they needed to replace every bit of plywood. He said they could use the nails in the existing plywood but they wouldn't hold and he couldn't offer the same warranty and he would also be at risk of loosing his license if he did it that way. He said they gave me such a good deal that they were only making $400 on my job. I felt bad so I took almost the last of my savings and said ok and gave him another check. Brittany sent me a new agreement on line to sign. It included not just the new plywood but a charge for a new skylight. We had already discussed the skylight and I had said I didn't want or need a new skylight and could not afford it. The contract states that additional charges are to be paid upon completion of work but they had me pay for the plywood before they continued the work. The crew came back on Monday to complete the job. I noticed after a couple of hours that their heavy extension cord was across the skylight and also what looked like cracks in the skylight. They left without saying anything about the broken skylight. They were still trying to charge me for a skylight that I had refused but was now cracked. The crew did not not cover my shrubs, flowers, garden, or siding as was stated in the contract. When they were done on Monday there was roofing paper, shingles, screening, and just a lot of dirty debris left all around my house and yard. My neighbor said there was roofing material at her house and in her fountains as well. The contract also included my small enclosed porch and now I can't close or lock the screen door to the porch . It's about an inch or two from even closing. I can deal with all of this except the broken skylight. I wanted that addressed because I have paid thousands of dollars and will have a leaky brand new roof. I have called repeatedly and Brittany assures me I will get a call back before closing. I have not received a call. I tried notifying the company in writing as per the contact. I sent a certified letter and it came back to me. They are either not at the Lake Oswego address or they refused to accept the letter. I called the arbitration company that is in the contract and it would cost me $700 just to begin the arbitration process. This company will not address my complaint or even return my calls. I am a single elderly lady trying to live on Social Security and have a brand new leaky roof. read more

Horrible customer service and they did not show up for our scheduled estimate. I first contacted Elements roofing via email. I missed a call from Brittany and called back within two minutes to be told that Brittany was "out of the office". Instead, I answered a few questions (what type of roof, stories of house, etc.) with the woman who answered the phone. I was told Brittany would call me back to schedule my estimate. A week later I had not heard back so I sent a follow-up email. Brittany called me that day and had me answer all of the same questions I had previously answered the last time I spoke with them via phone. We scheduled my estimate for that week on a Friday between 1 and 4. Brittany told me she would call me with a more accurate timeframe so I did not have to wait all day. Friday comes and I did not receive a call and Elements Roofing did not show up for my estimate. No call, no email, no communication. Good thing there are plenty of local roofing companies and we were only looking for a second opinion because this is the worst customer service I've experienced. read more

Here is a recap of my experience with Elements: My initial meeting with Ben was scheduled on a Wednesday at 3pm. When no one showed, I called the office. They said they would check it out and "call you right back". No one called. I called again after 5pm but the office no longer picked up the phone. They said I would receive a package containing choices/explanations of the materials. I did not receive this so I called about a week before the roof work was to be done. They said "you should have got that by now" and said I would get it right away. 3 days later I had nothing. I called and you said "hmmm, someone should have done that". Work began on 8/10. I came home to find trash everywhere and large nails on my driveway. On 8/12 Ben sent me a message saying the gutters would be done on 8/13. Which became 8/14 which became 8/17 which became 8/18. Well 8/18 came and went with no action. No one called or sent a message until 8/20. Which became "Monday 8/24 for absolutely sure". So of course it did not happen on 8/24. I told Ben we wanted grey gutters. They installed white gutters. Ben reported that you had "accidentally" charged my credit card an extra $5,030 but that it was OK because they had arranged a credit back right away. The charge appeared 8/17. No credit has posted by 8/26. They stole $5,030. While looking for the non-existent credit on my credit card, I found that they had charged a completely unauthorized extra $3,000 on 7/1. This makes them criminals of the highest degree. Complaints are being filed. read more

Elements were the lowest bid for our roof tearoff and the owner seemed very service focused . . . initially. They might be a good company for straightforward projects(?) but despite clear contract provisions to address ventilation and insulation for our older home, they utterly failed to address them. They have a clear strategy to bid low and make up the difference with change orders and became harder and harder to reach as problems were discovered and actual resolution was needed. We had a project that was very time-sensitive: converting the garage into a family room before our 2nd baby was born (and then we won't have time for anything). We looked at a couple companies and decided to go with Elements because of their outstanding reviews and because of how confident we were in them for our Project Manager. He promised to have the job done on time, on budget, and with high-quality work. Boy did he deliver - the team worked overtime to make it happen. Ben our foreman and the rest of the team was here from dawn to dusk and even on weekends, and as a result we were done weeks before the due date. Everyone was pleasant and respectful of our space, and took care to treat it like their own house. The work was outstanding quality, and we are absolutely thrilled with our new family room. Elements replaced my roof back in 2009. They originally estimated $10k then handed me a bill for nearly $20k without properly communicating the additional charges to me along the way. It felt like a bait and switch. Now, 7 years later, I have a leak in the roof and I cannot get anyone to talk to me to come out and even look at it. Their customer experience is horrible. read more

Elements Roofing replaced our roof in July 2014. We found it pretty alarming that the total bill, after ongoing adjustments and additions, was twice the amount of the original estimate. While we understand that some things are unknown until the old shingles are removed, it doesn't seem right that a company would be several thousand dollars off in the estimate. It's worth saying that the new roof is very nice. We also "needed" new gutters ($1500) and fascia board ($1200) was installed. The chimney had to be redone which also added to the expense. I assume the plywood sheets ($5760) underneath the tiles - the majority of which were replaced - are probably nice as well. But along the way, this was a major ordeal. Scheduling was a hassle, with several changes (not weather-related). When Ben said the work was finished, there were nails poking through the underside of the eaves all around. The chimney was a mess and the clean-up around the house was not complete. Elements agreed to return and correct the problems, but once again, this was rescheduled - three times. Yet we were expected to pay large (additional, unexpected) sums of money immediately, including the expectation of overnighting a check from Montana where we were traveling. We WOULD have been home for roof completion, had it happened on schedule and had there not been any complications. Paula, who works in the office, is very efficient and helpful. Apparently, it was sometimes difficult for even her to know Ben's exact plans regarding the work on our roof. Overall, I would say that we ended up with a very good product. I am uncertain about the value, however, and felt that we spent way too much time dealing with hassles related to rescheduling and concerns that should have been better attended to by Elements. The owner Ben was very rude; keep asking for money before the work is complete and tested in the rain; never talked about warrantee; did not do things he said he would do a lot of times; final invoice way more than estimate not being able to justify what additional work he did.
