I have VERY curly (make that FRIZZY) hair that I have fought with all my life. When my stylist of 15+ years called it quits during Covid I was bummed. Thankfully I'd had it cut somewhat shorter than usual JUST before lockdown, but it was getting scraggly when someone recommended Ann Marie, a "certified curl specialist" (who knew that was a thing?) - at Element on Water - to me. LIFE CHANGING! She really took the time to get to know me and my curls making me feel comfortable enough to get a completely new style. The relaxing treatment I got my second visit has held up amazingly well. It's a bit pricey for sure, the downtown parking situation is difficult, and I had to wait several weeks for a (required) "first curl consultation" appointment, but my hair hasn't looked this good in (literally) 60 years - and that makes me feel great. read more

this was my first time coming to this salon and it was beautiful inside and I really had high hopes. I was coming in for a consultation for extensions for my wedding this summer. Up until this point I had great communication with somebody named Beth who was really responsive to emails and helpful in answering questions. The stylist seemed friendly until she started evaluating my hair. She mentioned that it did not look like I washed it that morning like I said I did. She told me it looked greasy. I really didn't have a problem with the comment until she kept bringing it up to the point where I started to feel uncomfortable and like she was judging me. I felt like she couldn't get past it, and it wasn't relevant to the appointment at all. After a couple days of not being able to forget about this interaction, I cancelled my bridal appointments with this salon as I was worried that I could potentially feel humiliated on my wedding day as well. read more

I almost hate leaving this review because I was too much of a coward when I was there, even after paying $310 for my services, to express my dismay with my hair. Let me say the salon is very nice with all up to date accessories and a very calm atmosphere. The stylists were all very friendly too. That being said, after spending about 15 minutes discussing what I wanted done, and feeling confident we were on the same page, the outcome was not what I expected or wanted. My simple 'highlights" turned into almost a total highlight of the sides and front of my head. I'm brunette and just wanted simple highlights. Ugh. Onto my haircut... I had an inverted bob that I wanted trimmed and cut asymmetrical. I've been working on growing out the length, while keeping up with regular trims and good care. I was loving my length. My hair was pretty darn healthy looking. There were a few inches cut off and I'm pretty sad about that. It will grow, I get it. Because of the MANY foils that were put in, my hair now feels like straw, it's short, and a funky color. We spent a long time together talking about my curls and how to get the most out of the cut. So convenient and amazing!! Seriously, it's like I'm back home at a boutique in the city. You walk in and it just feels so open and relaxing. They offer a variety of services- from eyelash extensions, facials, mani/pedi, to amazing hair stylists. It's super clean and they use the newest products that is awesome for your hair. I've only had my hair done by one woman my entire life until I found Jess at EOW! I love it because I also know I can walk in here and trust any single one of these ladies! Prices are in line with other upscale salons in town, and you get the professionalism and talent you would expect. Don't worry about parking. As a person of color, I was quite skeptical about coming into a non-Black owned salon to get my hair done but I have faith in DevaCut trained stylist. Needless to say, I really loved my hair after my service. However, my issue is with the lack of transparency. Prior to the beginning of my service, I had a consultation with the stylist, Theresa, where I expressed my concerns and needs in regards to my hair. I think this would have been the appropriate time to tell me or any other customer about the extra charges associated with having thick hair (aka black hair) and that the price goes up after an hour. Instead, I was told about the extra charges after my hair had been styled. As much as I like my hair I refuse to support any business that would take advantage of clients by failing to inform them of such charges. I will not be coming back to Element. read more

I was in Syracuse for a wedding and decided on a whim that I wanted to get my hair styled and makeup done professionally. I called Element on Water and asked if they could take me in right there and then and they did! My hair turned out amazing, exactly what I had wanted (low, loose curly bun) and my makeup was phenomenal. I have a lot of issues finding makeup artists that I like, and Genevieve was out of this world. I have dry and oily skin, it's also super sensitive and my preference for makeup is a natural look. I learned that Genevieve is an esthetician, which is probably why my makeup was so light and felt really good on my skin. I highly recommend Element on Water to anyone looking for exceptional service, fair prices ($60 for hair and $60 for makeup), and an incredible final product. read more

Theresa really takes her time with you to understand what problems you're having with your hair (if any) and what you want to get out of your experience there and then she delivers that and then some. They are so welcoming and accommodating as soon as you walk in. The atmosphere is clean and beautifully decorated. Beautiful salon. Everyone is very welcoming when you arrive and they offer you coffee or water. It took me a couple of days to find a great salon here in Syracuse as I just moved here, and I chose this salon based on the previous reviews and pictures. Knowing what I know now, I would have gone elsewhere. My hair was blonde with dirty blonde roots and I went in to get my color changed. I asked for golden blonde, and I even showed pictures to the stylist. My hair turned out dark brown. I was dumbfounded. The stylist said "she wasn't expecting that either" and offered for me to come in the next day for a color correction. I went in the next day and got it the color I wanted. However, when I got home, I noticed a dark brown part of my hair that was left uncolored, and my hair was so damaged, it was frizzy and over processed. I am now doing hair masks to try and get my hair back to healthy as it was previously. I do not think it would have been this damaged if it was done the right way the first time. I ended up having to pay $110 for product. I will go elsewhere next time. read more

OVER PRICED!! BAD ETIQUETTE!! I called to make an appointment at Element as a first time client as they're brand new to downtown Syracuse. I requested a certain hair stylist that I was formerly familiar with from a different salon in Syracuse. I found out that she was all booked up through the holiday week and she wouldn't be able to see me. I was offered by the girl on the phone [Coleen Dodger] if I wanted to come in the next day. I replied "sure" and asked who I'd be seeing. She said it would be herself. I was surprised they could fit me in right away. I went over in our conversation what I wanted done to my hair as well as and most importantly the pricing!! I told her what I could afford and she said she could work with me and be fair so we discussed the process of what would be done and set the price. Remember; she said she could and would work with me and be fair. So she set not an estimate but the price so that I would know! She told me it would cost me $90 bucks, seems fair as I am a guy w/ short hair and it's a highlight and trim I wanted done. We reached a deal! Agreed! $90 bucks! However, the following day at 1pm I arrived five minutes early so I could find and pay for my parking on the street ($2.50). I came in and sat in her chair...then all of a sudden Colleen started to give me a total different story stating that it would cost me at least $150.00!!!!!! I was shocked! Keep in mind I'm just a guy with short dirty blonde hair already and its a highlight and a little trim which I've had performed often. I showed her pictures and reminded her of our conversation. She didn't seem to care and began telling me all about the high cost of their rent for the building and how expensive her products are blah blah blah. I told her I've had this done before several times and even by some of the stylists that currently work with her and never have I ever paid $150+ in Syracuse! In addition to the back and forth and sudden change in price Colleen had horrible people skills throughout, referring to me as hon and sweetie! She continued with her terms of endearment even though she had my name. It was sweetie this and sweetie that in her fake sweat little obvious fake voice...almost unbearable! Quite embarrassing to be honest not to mention insulting and a total lack of class in front of her colleagues and the few other clients. I ignored this at first, just blew it off but it continued. Is this a Syracuse thing? Typical of Syracuse I guess and of a girl with smurf blue hair trying to charge nyc fashion week prices!! I lived in NYC for many years and was charged $160 for the same exact process I was asking Colleen from Element to perform. That was New York freaking City and it was also at a 5 star venue that served me Champaign and gourmet biscuits while massaging my neck and head as I was with the stylist; a very classy joint in a very nice district of NYC. Even then I thought I was getting robbed! This is syracuse folks! What a joke hahaha! This is why I went over the price while on the phone with Colleen from Element the night before. This is why everyone reading should set price prior to being a gullible client sitting in a chair getting robbed. The way I see it is if you set a price on the phone and don't say it's a quote you should stick w/ it, Especially considering if you're a new business and need good reviews. I don't give bad reviews often as I know it can further hurt their potential business. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt in most cases. This is an exception and rubbed me the wrong way. In the end I just couldn't sit there and be robbed...I decided not to have her continue and was disappointed understandably. It was a total waste of my time. I drove all the way there under false pretences. I felt lied to. I felt had. Suckered into a price she set over the phone (NOT A QUOTE!). I mean do they seriously expect people to just sit in their chairs and wonder what price they're going to be stuck with in the end while the whole time being stressed over it? Is it on a sliding scale and if so why not be up front about it? I think that's bad business and I won't ever be returning! I wish she could've stuck to the price she gave me because I was looking forward to having a permanent hair stylist in upstate NY to return to time and time again. It's bad business and people skills on her part. I proceeded to leave and told her I was really disappointed and also gave her some advice ...I just had to. I told her nicely "you should really consider setting and agreeing on a price and sticking to it and also cut back on referring to people w/ terms of endearment, it's not a good look". You'd think she'd listen. Nope, as I grabbed my coat and proceeded out she again referred to me as honey and sweetie! Unbelievable! Disappointing to say the very least! The 1 Star is because she did ask if she could pay for my parking on my way out. But it was fake like a server from chili's, I hate that. read more
