I was searching for an appointment the week before the fall semester, which is naturally busy. Denied by many places, Kaitlyn was happy to come in early to do an appointment with me. Many salons wouldn't offer that, so I really appreciated the customer service. The decor inside is immaculate. As you'll see in the photos others have posted, it has an earthy yet luxurious feel to it. Down to earth but classy. Very bright and airy. A nice place to be. My stylist Kaitlyn (again, can't thank her enough for coming in early just for me) was very good about walking me through the steps of the process because I was doing a big change (cut off 12"+ and balayage; I've never even colored my hair before), making sure I was comfortable along the way. It definitely made me feel more at ease and trust in her abilities. She was very knowledgeable about the whole process of coloring from a chemical perspective. Which, as a chemistry major, I found pretty neat. Maybe others wouldn't care in the way I do about the chemistry, but it is relieving to know that your stylist really understands what she's doing to your hair. The products they use are very hair healthy and eco-friendly, which I find important. Louis offered me tea, too, which I've personally never experienced in a salon. Those little things help to make you more comfortable and at home, so I appreciated it greatly. As for how my hair turned out... I loved it! It couldn't have come out any better. It was exactly how I was hoping it would turn out. Masterful. It's been about 6 months since I got the cut and it's grown out nicely, which is exactly what I was hoping for! Before my hair was down to my hips with a lot of broken strands. I'm glad I got it chopped off because now it's healthy and turns out to be simple enough to style. Because now that I look back, I had so much hair that it just kinda sat there. I'm glad I got over the fear of cutting it, and that Kaitlyn was the one to do it! Just be aware that a process like mine cost about $200. Definitely not cheap, but these services also require a great deal of skill. Don't expect to be getting results this good for $20. I don't do a lot with my hair (I rarely ever use heat on it) so my hair is healthy enough to where I don't need cuts that often. But I think the next cut I need, I will come back. read more

This is my first time actually getting the haircut that I want!! I had a thick long hair and I wanted to go back to a short haircut. I dreaded going to hair salons in the US because I have Asian type of hair (thick, heavy strands), and almost all salons I went to have been disappointing me with the results because they're not used to handle this type of hair. I went anyway because I was too desperate! I called in the morning and they told me to come in an hour later. Kristen was my stylist and she was super nice! She greeted me and offered some drinks. She really tried to cater to my needs and she even confirmed at the end if I want to adjust the length and the model (which I did and she was soooo accommodating!). The wash and blow at the end was really nice too! The place itself was really cozy and well decorated. It looks like high-end salon as soon as I walk in. But, here's the highlight, IT IS SO AFFORDABLE! I've had haircuts with the same price and they usually do just the bare minimum. I literally told her I can't believe I only have to pay that much! I just want to start by saying that I have not been to a salon in about 3 years due to a really bad haircut in Brooklyn. yesterday (February 25th) was my birthday and I impulsively decided the night before to finally get a proper haircut. I had heard about HAIR HABITAT and was looking at their reviews as well as talking with my friends. At around 2:00 am in the moring on 2/25, I decided to chance it and leave an email on their website, (http://www.hairhabitat.com/contact.aspx) asking if there were any cancellations for later that day. At 9:00 am I was super surprised to not only hear back through an email from them so soon, but was offered an appointment with ARYELL (sound like ARE-EEE-EL) @ 2:30 from a cancellation due to the shitty weather. I called them to confirm and thank them for getting me in. The salon is on the second floor @ 719 E Genesee Street (same building as Strong Hearts Cafe) and is modern, homey, beautiful, and tastefully designed (I loved the couches and wanted to steal the pillows). I was warmly greeted by Jamie (the Coordinator and the guy who had emailed me so quickly), introduced to Aryell and Frank (owner) and all three wished me Happy Birthday and made me feel so welcome. I am a baby when it comes to my hair. My mother permed my long, thick hair when I was 12 and since then it has been thin and baby-fine. My hair has been a bitch to grow out of that horrible haircut 3 years ago. and was nervous about cutting off the length. I relied on friends for regular trims and due to that my ends were a scraggly mess with no style and looked like shit. Aryell was amazing. Seriously *the best* consultation I think I ever had. She was easy to talk to, never rushed me, asked a ton of questions, and gave many suggestions. (I like my hair long and most stylists in the past have usually just told me to color my hair to make it look thicker or cut it just past my ears.) She told me I could keep it on the long side and steered me away from layers due to my hair not being thick. She gave me different options and really made me feel comfortable. The salon is very eco-friendly and uses natural organic hair products. My shampoo and scalp massage was awesome and everything smelled so good! The owner was working on a client next to us and asked me how my birthday was going so far and again thanked me for coming. I gave this place '5 STARS' and my haircut was awesome. Aryell ended up cutting about 2 1/2 inches or so of dead scraggly ends with a thin top layer of hair a tiny bit shorter for movement, with some framing on the sides. I got a great blow out and she told me a lot of different ways I could put volume in my hair without weighing it down. I'm not big on styling products, but the natural organic hairspray used (sprayed into her hands and lightly ran through the front of my hair) was AWESOME and non-sticky or heavy. The price was great and will definitely be coming back... probably sooner just to buy the 'Simply Organic' fine hair shampoo and conditioner they have! oh... and seriously check out their house brand 'Hair Habitat' hand lotion!!!!! I forget the name of the one I tried (sunshine something?) but it smelled a little like lemon verbena and I just happened to put some on before I left. My hands were soooo soft for the rest of the day and the scent is light but smells sooo good and lasts and lasts. I got many compliments about my haircut and felt like that Pantene girl in the commercials whose hair is light and bouncy and shiny and I couldn't believe how great it looked. i will most certainly be coming back for my haircuts with Aryell. read more

I have gotten my haircut by Frank a few times since this salon opened and I have been extremely satisfied each time. I am not one to frequent salons (in fact I had never even been to one before going here), but since I work in the same building as the salon, I thought I would give it a try. The decor is very settling and the design of the salon is extremely modern. It feels like some place you would find in a city much hipper than Syracuse. Frank and his staff have been nothing but courteous and professional each time I have been in. Not being used to the salon environment, I expected to pay out the nose for my haircut. Not so. It was just a few bucks more than my usual haircut and about 10 times better. My hair looks better than it ever has and I feel great about supporting a local independent business that actually cares about it's customers. I desperately needed a haircut and wound up here on a whim (and other reviews) and I was not disappointed. It was like Kristin knew me and my hair my whole life. She understood my hair's texture better than I do, and I deal with it everyday! The cut was fabulous -- she helped shape it to my face, length, and hair type. And she was very accommodating to make sure I was satisfied -- constantly asking about small details in the style that I've never thought about. All the products smell delicious, too! Went back here again when my regular stylist was out on maternity leave, and had another great experience. Again, I brought photos of my style, told the stylist (Caitlin(sp?)) what I wanted, and she did a great job. She was friendly, professional, and gave me a great haircut - what else could you ask for? I've never posted a review on Yelp before but I've also never gotten such a perfect haircut from a perfect stranger! (Though is doesn't feel that way now) I'm a small woman with very thick hair and keeping it short and styled while away from my home salon has been a challenge. I walked in and told Kaitlyn what I wanted and was so surprised that she picked up on exactly what I wanted and what my hair needs! She was also super friendly and perceptive. Walking out of hair habitats I wasn't thinking, "well it'll grow out soon and look better", because it looked awesome right off the bat! THANK YOU! As a current freshman student, I didn't know where to go for my haircut. I decided to get one around campus and yikes, I was so disappointed. Even the hair stylist charged me less than usual because I seemed upset with the outcome. I have naturally curly hair so I don't think she knew how to put hair. I couldn't get a hair cut during my break because my hair stylist was gone for a while and I got layers to try and fix up my boring haircut. And it just came out worse. I just couldn't take my horrible layers anymore. I did so much research before settling with any salon. I was tired of my hair getting tangled and falling flat That's when I came across Hair Habitat. When I told Kaitlyn what I wanted she instantly had ways to fix up my haircut and walked me through what she was going to do -- something I'm not used to. While she was cutting my hair, she convinced me to go even shorter and I'm so glad she did. I ended up really liking my hair and my friends want to go sometime and get their haircut. Only downsides I can think of are the price and location. Its a walk to get to but I thought it wasn't so bad... Take the 443 on campus to the warehouse and walk from there. And I tend to pay that amount back at home (I think 5 dollars less or so). But I do know some people who pay less. All in all, I personally have nothing bad to say. Will be back again. I just moved to Syracuse from Los Angeles and have been looking for a decent salon at which to get my hair cut. It always takes me a long long time to find a place I trust with my hair, and it's not that I'm terribly picky (I cut my own bangs in between cuts, if that's any indication) it's just that haircuts are one thing that can be really expensive and I want to make sure I'm getting my money's worth. After walking through the mall a few times, I decided I had to go elsewhere. While at Stronghearts for a study break one day, I decided to check Hair Habitat out. I had just cut my own bangs the other day and decided I needed a touch up. I walked in and immediately someone offered to help me. I let them know I just wanted my bangs trimmed and wanted to see how much it was and if they had time to slip me in. The woman I spoke to said she would see if they had a time slot available. I almost walked away because it seemed too busy, but she made sure to stop me, and a man greeted me and led me in, showed me where to sit and before I knew it, I had a bib around me and we were chatting away. He was so friendly and nice, I felt completely at ease (even though I was a little anxious about how much the trim might end up costing me, since we didn't discuss it before I sat down). Despite how fancy and high-end the place looked, and despite the fact that I had basically just walked in off the street, I wasn't made to feel uncomfortable or unwelcome, and felt as if the people there really just wanted me to relax and let them take care of me. A huge relief and welcome surprise, since some high-end salons can be really snooty and condescending. After a few minutes, I was done, and my hair looked great. I learned later that the man who cut my hair was Frank, the owner of the salon, and the woman who helped me earlier was his wife. Wow! It is unspeakably great to find a place with such great service, where the people in charge are willing to take time to really help you and are sweet and considerate about it. And, the icing on the cake: when I asked Frank how much I owed for the trim, he said not to worry about it. What class! Haircuts here are usually $50, way out of my usual budget, but if the service is this pleasant, and the bang trims are free in between cuts, I will definitely have to save up and come in for a full out cut and blowout. Because really, you could spend at least half that at any ol' salon at the mall, but this kind of class and consideration is totally priceless (and I'd wager unmatchable anywhere else). 4 stars instead of 5 - the last star is in considering that it might not be budget-friendly for everyone, especially college students. read more

This is my go-to hair salon while living in Syracuse. It's hard to find THE salon that you will stick with and trust. But I'm so glad to stumble upon Hair Habitat. I love the nature-feel and greenery setting when you step into the salon. Their products, as described on their website are organic and I never felt pressured to buy anything. Got my hair colored here and it felt nice, at least with a mindset that the coloring was "organic" and hopefully less damaging to my hair. My stylist is Shannon and she is absolutely lovely. She is very friendly and easy going. She gave me the BEST short bob cut EVER! I went from middle of my back long hair to a chin-level bob cut! All I told her was that I wanted a short hairdo. She worked her skills and gave me a stunning cut that was shorter in the back and longer in the front. Everyone at work gave me compliments and told me to never have long hair again! My 4 year old niece's jaw dropped when she saw that I chopped my hair, and few days later, emulated her aunt and got a short hairdo too! The reasons why I'm giving Hair Habitat 4 stars are because appointments are not flexible and available, at least whenever I call in the week or two before. Shannon is popular and she's always booked! I couldn't even schedule an appointment for my wedding hair needs (coloring and cut) because there were no available appointments within the time frame that I needed. Granted, they did offer me with another stylist, but my phobia of possibly getting a less than desirable haircut, prevented me so. Also, I am not sure what their hours are, but I work till 5pm daily and it is very difficult to find a time and schedule that I am able to get my hair done. I think their hours are very limited on the weekends as well. Lastly, I just noticed that they advertise a "reusable appointments card" on their site. I've been to the salon more than 5 times in the past three years, and have never been offered this card. read more

Hair Habitat is an incredible place for salon services. I have personally done haircuts, highlights, and a full leg wax here. The environment is relaxed and welcoming. The stylists have incredible talent. The owner is genuinely kind and talented. There was recently a mix up with my appointment and it never got put on the schedule but when I showed up the owner graciously took the time to cut my hair instead of the stylist I had originally scheduled with. He was very apologetic about the mix up and did not hesitate to offer a solution. When I mentioned I was going to a wedding later in the day, he even did a little bit of styling and threw some hairspray in while he was drying my hair so that it would have a little something extra for the whole day. And he didn't charge me for the appointment. This is a very well-run business that offers high quality services with incredibly talented stylists for reasonable prices. They deserve your business and they'll keep mine! :) Also I know someone who says the barber is excellent for men's cuts! read more

There was a lot riding on my first haircut with them -- I had been growing it out since Nov. 2010 when a layers-happy stylist (in the Syracuse area) took a giant chunk out of the front and made it look like someone cut gum out of my hair -- plus my look is extra-important since this hair style might be seen in an up-coming tv pilot episode. The fundamentals at the salon are all very sound: good wash & condition, a clean and soothing studio. I respect and admire their "natural, non-toxic" credo, which is what led me to them. Unfortunately, the cut I came away with doesn't quite work with someone who has very fine, very thick, mostly straight hair. I was naturally disappointed, expressed myself here, and was amazed at how quickly the salon manager followed up to help make things better. That alone is reason to support this salon -- they truly do care, they truly want you to be happy. It has turned my opinion around, for certain. read more

I have been looking for a salon in Syracuse that offers natural hair care products, by chance I ran across a flyer for Hair Habitat at Strong Hearts Cafe (AWESOME vegan restaurant right below Hair Habitat). I scheduled a consultation with Frank to see if the highlighting I currently do at another salon could be achieved using natural products. Frank was truly interested in helping me achieve the look I wanted (even knowing that my current salon happens to be run by a family member!) His openness and ability to convey the love of his profession / passion for natural products won me over and I set up an appointment with him. The results of said appointment were fantastic. I could not be more pleased. The building and decor are beautiful, the staff professional, and the work done there is topnotch. The salon uses natural products, which one might assume would be extremely expensive, however, the cost for my high and low lighting was very reasonable. I recommend Hair Habitat to anyone who wants to look their best and do it safely / naturally. read more

I started going to Hair Habitat several months ago when I scheduled an appointment for a cut and color, which was done by Enas who has since become my regular stylist. I had such a great time during my first appointment; Enas is very professional and also has a energetic and enthusiastic personality. Afterwards, I was so impressed with the results of her work that I knew Hair Habitat would be my new go-to salon. Since my first appointment, I have been back several times and I never have difficulty scheduling an appointment at a convenient time. Further, the salon itself is beautiful, bright, and clean. They offer complimentary high quality coffee and tea. Organic and natural beauty products are available for purchase; they also sell jewelry made by local artists. This past Wednesday I called to schedule an appointment for an undercut. They were able to schedule me for an afternoon appointment on Thursday with Kaitlyn (she specializes in undercuts). We discussed in length the right undercut for me and she explained the best way to style and eventually grow out and undercut. The undercut looks great and she did a wonderful job! She then informed me that Enas was in the salon. Enas had some time before her next appointment so we decided to add some color to my hair. We discussed the best way to do purple, which I had wanted for some time. She ended up doing dark purple balayage and it looks fantastic! While my color was processing, Leanne polished my nails with the new vegan gel polish. The manicure looks amazing, which is rather impressive considering the poor shape my nails were in previously. So far the polish is holding up as well as normal gel polish. This salon is definitely a five star salon in terms their service, products, and environment. Their professional staff definitely makes you feel like you're the only customer in the salon. They will take the time to make sure you get the look you want. I can't recommend it enough! read more

I was in desperate need of a haircut so my husband called on Friday to make me an appointment since I was at work (bless that man, right?). It was my first appointment with this salon so he told them my hair type and they gave him the name of the woman who would cut my hair. So I had my appointment Monday with Heather and she was amazing! First of all, she's the sweetest person I've ever met in my life! I didn't really know what I wanted done with my hair, I just knew I needed it to be lighter because it's naturally super thick and heavy. Heather helped me figure out what would work best and she worked her magic! She made me feel at ease the entire time, I will be going back to her! I also LOVE that this salon has cruelty-free & organic products and the vibe of the salon is so neat! Definitely rustic/industrial and it's not at all intimidating like other salons I've been to. I joined Hair Habitat at the end of February and cannot say enough about every aspect of this salon. I have been in this industry for over 23 years and experienced many different personalities and atmospheres, along with products. This salon is by far the most professionally run, friendliest , honest, and true to it's mission. I have noticed a huge change in my overall health concerning my allergies and overall well-being. The natural, organic products are simply amazing and why would you use anything else that effects your body so dramatically? I have never enjoyed my work experience as much as I do here. The clientelle are just as great and add to the overall peaceful, but bright and trendy atmosphere.
