Unrecognized Yelp offer.
Dean V.

Was passing through town and thought we would try a local family owned restaurant instead of a chain. What recked the visit? They did not honor their own Yelp check-in offer. I showed the woman checking us out the 10% check in offer and she said they don't accept it. I said someone with the restaurant must have setup the offer with Yelp. She told me no. There was no arguing with her. Also, this restaurant charges 3.5% more if you use a credit card instead of cash. Service was slow. I was turned off by the whole thing.

If you live here and have come yet you're truly missing out! The food is amazing and the staff is even better!

My husband and I have a warm spot in our hearts for this lively, friendly restaurant down the street from our alma mater, BGSU. Last night we were in town and naturally, walked from our hotel over to El Zarape for dinner. We love the food (the menu is gigantic and the choices, varied) but we were also looking forward to a big cold, dark Mexican beer and a frosty 32-ounce Margarita. *Reynaldo,* our server, did a great job of taking care of us while allowing us time to enjoy our food and celebrate the end of a very long week.

If you are ever craving a taco, enchilada, burrito, or just chips and salsa, you must check out El Zarape. My friend and I found this place our freshman year at BGSU, and it has become a staple of our lives, especially when we get visitors because everyone needs to experience this place at least once. The staff is very friendly, and I have never once had to wait for a table. They recently upgraded their menu, so now they offer more than ever before! We were able to get fast refills on our drinks, and our main meal and dessert (highly recommend the churros) came out quickly. There's a nice environment inside as well. It is very bright and colorful, and it just makes you feel good being in there. I will definitely be returning (for many, many more visits). They also do pick-up, and the food is always fresh and warm.

Combination Enchilada and Tamales

First time stopping here as we travel south. And last sadly. Note: If a coupon pops up on YELP for 10% because you "checked in", don't get excited. They do NOT honor it. Service was fine and the hotter salsa was nice. Mix it with the normal for a nice blend. I had the burrito California and my wife the chicken enchilada and pork tamale. The burrito was far more favorable with a nice spice of chicken and ground beef. But it was the "beef stew", basically chunks of beef with a spicy sauce, which I liked. Other than that the meal was not very memorable. I love Mexican food so it breaks my heart to write this review.

We enjoyed the freshness and quality of the Mexican cuisine. We sat on the patio, which was perfect. Although it did face a parking lot, the staff was very attentive and friendly. Food service was very quick. In regards to the food, It was quite good, fresh, and able to hold that quality for the duration of the trip home. Excellent flavors, good, hot sauces, and an enjoyable meal all around. Would be back when back in the area. WARNING: I saw a sign when we walked into the restaurant that there is a 3.5% charge on top of the payment if you use a credit card. There is no charge if you use debit. I decided to use cash for the meal. I was thankful that I had cash in my wallet. This could be a turn off for many people. They did not honour the 10% off for Yelp, though that was offered on check-in.

Server going above and beyond delivering plates to customers. (He did very well at balancing the plates)

Service was great. Best service I've had in a while from anywhere. Food was great as well. The spinach cheese deep was very flavorful and the tacos tradicionales were tasty too. Authentic Mexican!

Simply fantastic. Came in on Labor Day for dinner. Was offered drinks and served lickety split. Got a 32oz Dos Equis Amber which decadently hit my pallet. Ordered the Special Combo. Not sure what was on it, but there were 5 different, super tasty morsels of Mexican delight. Would come back again in a heart beat! Chios and salsa good too.

Chicken Fajitas

Sopa Aztec aris a great soup dish with rice in the bottom, shredded chicken and avocado, and a delicious broth with a slight spice. It's a must have. While the service was quite bad - people should smile more! - we enjoyed ourselves and will likely be back for its consistent food quality and cheap drinks. Margaritas are cheap and LARGE. The fajitas were enough for two people. For only $15/person I couldn't have asked for an easier lunch stop. The inside was old but fine. We were greeted at the door and there was quite a buzz about. Overall the ambiance was fair.

Margarita flight.... so good

Corn chips and salsa were brought to us as soon as we were seated. The salsa was great! It had a little bite to it, not just the usual mild salsa. When you order, keep in mind the portions are large. I ordered the Chili Poblano's and two Tamales. The Poblano's came with rice and refried beans. The Poblano's also had seasoned ground beef on them. The flavors were great, probably now my favorite restaurant Poblano's . I had to bring the tamales home, they are huge! They tasted great the next day, they were covered, with chili beans, mole sauce and cheese. They tasted great! My wife had the Enchiladas Tapatias which she said was delicious! We will be going back to eat there again!

The music playing was a bit loud and it only got louder which made it difficult to hear one another. That aside, the service was good and attentive even as busy as they became. They were patient with us as we stayed a while talking. Food- the chips and salsa are addictively good. Portions are very generous. I had the pina loca which was very tasty, but the chorizo needs to be hotter. I enjoyed it still. My wife and I love Mexican food, but she did not care for the rice or beans and barely ate her meal. Costly as it was over $75 for three dinners.
