This place has been a reliable stop for me over many years of traveling through the area. They do all of the things that you hope for in a low cost Mexican restaurant. They have a wide variety of items on the menu, the preparation is generous but not so fancy that they end up having to charge more. You know what you're getting in a place like this. Basic, reliable, but also delicious! I always take out as a great sign in a Mexican restaurant if the white staff has difficulty speaking English, that is the case here, lol. Having said that every server I've ever had has always been super friendly and welcoming to me. Over the years I've typically gone with their Pollo Loco, which is a simple dish prepared with thin slices of chicken over rice with cheese sauce. I have often lamented that I can't get this particular dish back home. The chicken is always tender, and the cheese sauce is always perfect. Nice crispy chips and delicious not too hot salsa complete the experience. About the only thing I haven't done here is have an alcoholic beverage, on my most recent visit my wife had a margarita and indicated it was delicious. I'm so glad this place is here, and frankly I wish they would open a location in my hometown. read more

Was passing through town and thought we would try a local family owned restaurant instead of a chain. What recked the visit? They did not honor their own Yelp check-in offer. I showed the woman checking us out the 10% check in offer and she said they don't accept it. I said someone with the restaurant must have setup the offer with Yelp. She told me no. There was no arguing with her. Also, this restaurant charges 3.5% more if you use a credit card instead of cash. Service was slow. I was turned off by the whole thing. read more

Last night we were in town and naturally, walked from our hotel over to El Zarape for dinner. If you are ever craving a taco, enchilada, burrito, or just chips and salsa, you must check out El Zarape. My friend and I found this place our freshman year at BGSU, and it has become a staple of our lives, especially when we get visitors because everyone needs to experience this place at least once. The staff is very friendly, and I have never once had to wait for a table. They recently upgraded their menu, so now they offer more than ever before! We were able to get fast refills on our drinks, and our main meal and dessert (highly recommend the churros) came out quickly. There's a nice environment inside as well. It is very bright and colorful, and it just makes you feel good being in there. I will definitely be returning (for many, many more visits). First time stopping here as we travel south. And last sadly. Note: If a coupon pops up on YELP for 10% because you "checked in", don't get excited. They do NOT honor it. Service was fine and the hotter salsa was nice. Mix it with the normal for a nice blend. I had the burrito California and my wife the chicken enchilada and pork tamale. The burrito was far more favorable with a nice spice of chicken and ground beef. But it was the "beef stew", basically chunks of beef with a spicy sauce, which I liked. We enjoyed the freshness and quality of the Mexican cuisine. We sat on the patio, which was perfect. Although it did face a parking lot, the staff was very attentive and friendly. Food service was very quick. In regards to the food, It was quite good, fresh, and able to hold that quality for the duration of the trip home. Excellent flavors, good, hot sauces, and an enjoyable meal all around. Would be back when back in the area. WARNING: I saw a sign when we walked into the restaurant that there is a 3.5% charge on top of the payment if you use a credit card. There is no charge if you use debit. I decided to use cash for the meal. I was thankful that I had cash in my wallet. This could be a turn off for many people. This was my spot in college. My friend and I were there once a week. After 10 years, we stopped in on the way to a weekend away, and it's changed a bit but was still the same place I left. The chips and salsa were still some of my favorites, and I enjoyed my vegetarian combo, which included a burrito, enchilada, and tostado, all of which were very good. My friend ended up canceling her order because it was taking longer than expected, and she wasn't feeling well. Our server was a young man. He was okay, nothing bad, just no real interaction. I think he was worn out with a party of 10 right before us. Our old favorite server has since become a manager, and that was great to see. It's still the mellow fun place we remembered. read more

If I could rate every aspect of the meal it would go as follows. Time to be seated and cleanliness of restaurant: five stars. I have been three times now. We are always seated almost right away. So I know that their service is quick and cleaning is done immediately upon conclusion of guests. The bathrooms are always orderly and clean. Service: 5 stars. I have had a different member of the wait staff every time I have been. They are always courteous, kind, and willing to help explain the menu. Food: 3 Stars. Maybe its been busy. Or maybe the kitchen is slow, or maybe this is how long it actually takes to cook... However, the time it has taken to get my food always seems longer than any other Mexican restaurant I have been to. Maybe it is a sales play to get me to have an extra margarita... I have no idea, but it is always a decent wait. When it comes to actual taste, it is decent. Nothing to write home about, just to yelp. Fajitas are good, but could be seasoned a bit better. Queso is a bit too watery. Guacamole is alright. Enchiladas were meh. My girlfriend enjoys this place and lives close, so we will probably be back. But it is just okay. Drinks: 4 stars. Sopa Aztec aris a great soup dish with rice in the bottom, shredded chicken and avocado, and a delicious broth with a slight spice. It's a must have. While the service was quite bad - people should smile more! - we enjoyed ourselves and will likely be back for its consistent food quality and cheap drinks. Margaritas are cheap and LARGE. I love, love, love Mexican and it's not too often I have to write a bad review but here it goes. I arrived around 1pm. I just hopped off the interstate for a bite to eat. What a mistake!! They seated me right away and everything after that was awful service. My waitress(blond hair and accent is all I remember) was awful! She treated me as if I was a piece of crap, not happy, didn't check on me, and took SEVERAL minutes to get my bill. The food was not hot, it was nearly warm and slapped together. The food is delicious, it's a loud and exciting atmosphere and it's almost always a perfect experience. I've been there maybe 50 or more times and have only had 1 problem with my order which was only the fault of a miscommunication on my part.
