First time having Venezuelan food! This was at a small local restaurant, El Venezolano on Danforth. We got the El Venezolanito, which came with 2 arepas, 2 mini cachapas, 2 tequenos, 2 mini empanadas, and 2 patacones. Finished off with some churros! Apologies in advanced if I butcher the descriptions! Best thing about Toronto is finding gems of restaurants like these! Small shop but full of life, passion and flavours! The staff are super friendly and lots of locals come here. The wall decor is cute too. Empanadas were oily but tasty. Great little garlic dip that comes with! El Venezolano caught my eye on IG a year ago with their crazy chocolate toddy pictures. They've been on my need-to-try list since then, and was finally able to go. My wife and I both got their famed arepas, and were happy we did. The corn flour arepa was thick and chewy, and the stuffings were tasty. The camaron arepa had nicely sauteed plump shrimps and a generous amount of avocado. The pabellon had shredded beef that was tasty but a bit stringy, there was a good heaping of black beans, and the sweet plantains were a nice complement though would have wanted more. Price-to-size ratio could have been better, but not prohibitive. Would recommend a visit! read more

Quarantine Day 8: Another great Venezuelan find along the Danforth! We placed an order via UberEats. We started off with the El Venezolanito which is a sampler of 2 each of mini treats. This platter featured cheese as the main filling/topping for each bite. They included the arepas that were stuffed with cheese, cachapas (which is the pancake looking one) was also topped with cheese, tequenos was like a Venezuela cheese stick, empanadas had meat and cheese in them, and the patacones were a fried plantain base topped with cheese...so a lot of cheese! One of our mains was the Patacon Pernil. This was a roasted pork on a flattened green plaintain. It was covered in cheese, coleslaw, and garlic and pink sauce. Aside from being visually stunning with all the different colours, it was super tasty. The sauces were garlicky and tangy. The coleslaw was fresh and creamy. Together with the savory pork and the fried plantains it was great. The last dish that we tried was the Venezuelan Breakfast which is available all day. This is a plate with arepa, a scramble with tomatoes and onions, shredded beef, black beans, avocado, and cheese on the side. I was kind of surprised to see each component so separated out. Even the cheese was separate. This was nice though so you could customize the flavours of each bite. The very last thing I decided to indulge in was a passion fruit juice. They packed it really well - it had its own biodegradable tray. It tasted fresh. It was less sweet than I thought it would be, very true to what the fruit tastes like. It was a nice accompaniment to the fried items earlier in the meal. They had a lot of other exotic fruit juices as well that I'd definitely be back to try. read more

Great casual restaurant for Venezuelan cuisine in the city - one of the best places for arepas in Toronto. We ordered 2 fish dishes (salmon and king fish). Each fish dish came with 3 sides - we chose a combination of sauteed vegetables, salad, tostones (green plantains), cassava fries, and black beans as the sides. The salad (greens, onion, and avocado slices) and tostones were great. This was an amazing restaurant for my small family! My 5 year old daughter loved this food, especially the cheese sticks. Most things were not spicy (they give you hot sauce on the table), so it worked out nicely for her. I am avoiding gluten, and there were so many GF items, and they were all delicious. My favourites are the chicken empanadas and the arepas. The shop was cute, and the cook/staff was friendly and knowledgeable. read more

Great food! We tried a bit of everything. Because we were unfamiliar with Venezuelan food, our first choice was the El Venezolanito since it has an appetizer-sized versions of their larger dishes. We also tried the patacon with roast pork, creamy sauces, and crispy plantain - so good and as big as your face. Finally we also tried the pabellon criollo. The beef was juicy and went well with the sides. Any of the dishes on their own would be filling enough for one person. Prices are very reasonable for the portion and it's a great option for a group if you want to share things. The inside is casual and relaxed, the staff were friendly. My favourite Latin cuisine restaurant. I bring friends and family here, and they all love it too and have come back without me. First time with Venezuelan food; my partner and I both chose a meal from the wide selection of AREPAS- a crispy, grilled corn flour bun, stuffed with a variety of a lot of good things. I had the PABELLON - messy to eat with hands; had to ask for a fork to help me keep all the avocado, shredded beef, cheese, black beans, and the perfectly fried, fried plantain, under control. So yummy, very flavourful - everything tasted freshly made!! Hubs had the CAMARON- also messy, due to the arepas being stuffed with plump shrimp and avocado. He was also very pleased with his meal. Service excellent; staff friendly and accommodating; reasonably priced; we ate on the patio with more than adequate distance between us and another family of 3. I found out about El Venezolano thru a Hot+New alert from Yelp. It is a fairly new restaurant, and still has an application for a liquor licence in the front window. Inside is a little small, with seating for about 20 people at small tables. The decor is mostly bright white with black accents and a few pictures. There is a tv (which was not on that day), and Latin music was playing in the background. The server was pretty quiet, but he was definitely around all the time checking on the various tables. The menu is quite extensive, with about a dozen varieties each of arepas ($8-13) and empanadas ($5), plus a few hot entrees and some appetizers. I ordered fried plantains ($3.99) to start and the Clasica sweet corn pancakes ($10). The plantains came quickly, with lots of shredded cheese on top, and were quite tasty. The pancakes were delicious, stuffed with white cheese and then folded over. Additions such as shredded beef or grilled chicken are available for $2.99-3.99 extra. Before writing this review, I stopped in this past week to try some empanadas for take-out. I ordered the shredded beef and cheese and the sweet plantain. They were a decent portion size, crisp outside and not oily, and both were good but not as tasty as the pancakes. after seeing this restaurant featured on the toronto eats challenge tiktok, i decided to try this place out! my family and i tried several of their platters and a salad of theirs and it was all delicious and refreshing. i never expected venezuelan food to be this diverse and interesting (because you don't really hear about it) but it's everything. if you get the chance, try to get a little bit of everything including a salad (the fried food needs it) and you'll be blown away! read more

Ordered for pickup and came with no napkins or cutlery. Tried an arepa which was below average and a Cachapa which was so underwhelming that I was only able to take one bite and had to throw the rest in the trash (even though I try to never waste any food). The Cachapa was basically a pile of grease that was falling apart with a bit of cheese. We've been on loosing streak trying recently eating out in this city to the point where I'm afraid to try anything new(toronto what's happening to your restaurants?) so went here with some trepidation.We had early dinner on the week-end and it was great and really looking forward to going back and trying some of the other things on the menu that haven't seen elsewhere. Food was fresh and well-prepared. The arepas I had was the best I've had in the city, the maize dough was so fresh, smelled of fresh bread when it came to the table! I had to report the place to health Canada because of health concern after going there and server/cooker/ Cleaning gave us the food with black gloves that he was using for Cleanning.
