a neon sign on the outside of a restaurant
Michelle L.

I've been eyeing this Latin American restaurant in Corsa Italia since late last year when the construction was going on. I've walked past it a few times, and a friend in the neighborhood mentioned it was opened on January 1 by the same folks who own Atomic 10 around the corner. We were excited to check it out for a night out on a cold winter evening. We were offered a few choices of tables, but we chose to sit at the bar (because that's what I usually like to do at the restaurants + you get to talk to the bartenders!). The oblong-oval Bluetooth mirrors on the west wall seemed like a weird décor and out of place, even though the shape did continue through to Rosa's 'logo' with the rose and the eye. The lit-curved arches on the way into the restaurant, continuing on the east wall gave the restaurant a cool modern vibe. Unfortunately, the lighting of the space was not pleasing to the eye. The large red Rosa's neon sign on the back wall gave the restaurant a warm calming glow, but mixed with the cold blue-white neon light from the "no eres bebesita..." sign over the bar not only negated the warmth, but lit the area up like a bad science experiment. The blue-white glow was reminiscent of the harshness of a fluorescent light, which is not what you want in a 'fancier' restaurant. To start, we ordered the Smoked Negroni, a Classic Margarita and the Peruvian Ceviche. The negroni came covered with a smoke-infuser, a bit showy, but tasted great. The margarita was OK; couldn't taste much of the 1800 tequila, and the dehydrated lime wheel did nothing for the cocktail. The ceviche was disappointing compared to others I've had - I was expecting bigger chunks of fish and it sat in an excessive pool of leche de tigre - the ceviche was traditional as it came with corn (well, roasted corn nuts) and a few slices of sweet potato. For mains, the menu was very confusing. We wanted to try the Entrana, and found it strange that it was printed on the menu that this was UNAVAILABLE. (Wouldn't you just leave it off the menu text since you're re-printing? I get you want your patrons to know the skirt steak is usually an option, but it was still weird to choose to print 'unavailable'.) Apparently, the shipment did not come - all beef served at Rosa's is grass-fed, hormones and antibiotic-free, shipped directly from Argentina. We opted for the Bife Ancho/Ojo de Bife (which was ribeye); we asked why there was a slash, whether it's different preparation of the same cut of steak, but our server did not know. The menu also said all beef cooked to medium; we wanted ours medium-rare, and was assured if that is our choice, they could do that. The cut was tender, the chimichurri on top was fantastic, the side of finishing salt was different, but the steak unfortunately not only came medium-well, it also rested a bit too long in the kitchen. The steak was lukewarm, and with the amount of butter the overcooked broccolini was doused in, it migrated all over on the wooden serving plate, and started to coagulate halfway through our meal. The tiny bit of accompanying jasmine rice was cold and dry. To round out our meal, the Camaron tacos were a bit of the unsung hero of the night. The shrimps were of a good size; they could have used more char on it to bring out the umami of the seafood. I also was hoping for corn tortillas, but they were flour (and were not doubled up). There was a mound of purple cabbage on top, which covered the 3 tacos so much you could not see the shrimp when it arrived to the table. The cabbage could have used some treatment of a light vinaigrette; it was pretty hard and tasteless. The amount of queso was also not proportional. The mango-habanero sauce was awesome, helping to tie the dish together, but the kitchen was stingy as the vessel it came in was hardly filled half-way. Service definitely needs work. The bartender accidentally spilled water while pouring our first glasses of water when we sat down, but instead of wiping it up, she decided to put a old folded coaster on top of the spilled water 10 minutes later and then my margarita on top. We also ordered a bottle of Malbec, and for our entire meal, we refilled our own wine glasses. Our water glasses were also never filled until the end of our meals despite us sitting AT the bar! Dirty rags were also all over the front and back of the bar. The problem is, that blue-white neon light exposed all those flaws. Rosa's is young restaurant in St. Clair West that has promise. It needs quite a bit of polishing and editing, from the sloppy bar service, to the confusing menu, to the temperature and presentation of the food. With some attention and refining, it has potential to become a neighbourhood gem.

Grilled chicken with baja fish tacos in the background

I came here on it's opening weekend after hearing about it from a friend of a friend. My fiancee and I ordered the empanadas colombianas as a starter. I loved the seasoning of the ground beef filling and the cheese. For our mains, I ordered the baja fish tacos while my partner got the pollo on the parilla with brussels sprouts. Both dishes were served on a tree trunk wedge and plated beautifully. I loved the pickled red cabbage and aioli that my tacos came with though I was a bit disappointed that the fish itself wasn't seasoned in any way. My partner did not like the cut of her chicken and felt it was too fatty. However, the brussels sprouts came with sour cream and parmesan and were a surprising delight. For our dessert, we ordered a couple of looped chocolate churros which were delicious! In terms of service, I could tell that the young servers were still getting into the routine of things but they were all polite and attentive. I like the modern decor and the atmosphere felt more on the relaxed side. I would like to come here again once they've ironed out some more of their dishes.

Impeccable. The staff was genuinely kind and attentive without being overbearing. I felt welcomed from the second I walked through the door. I ordered the Avocado Salmon Toast paired with the beautifully pink and perfectly named Pink Flamingo drink. My friend went for the Sweet Berry Waffle and a classic lemonade. Let me just say--the flavors did not disappoint. The salmon was fresh, creamy avocado was piled high, and the toppings were thoughtfully layered. My only tiny critique (and I say this with love): the toast itself was a little too crispy for my liking. It made the dish a bit tricky to cut into, and the texture leaned dry. Next time, I'll definitely ask for it untoasted or lightly toasted. A softer base would really let those flavors shine without the crunch competing. Now let's talk about that Pink Flamingo--WOW. It was tropical, sweet, and honestly gave me vacation-in-a-glass vibes. I almost ordered a second, but adulting (and budgeting) called me back to reality. That said, it's worth every sip! I snuck a few bites from my friend's Sweet Berry waffles, and yep--I'm getting that next time!! Light, fruity, tasty!! I can't wait to come back and try more from the menu. Who knows, maybe next time I'll get to sample a few more dishes Seriously though--support local and give this place a try. You'll leave full, happy, and already planning your next visit.

Very good first time experience with Costa Rican food…read more We went with the recommendations and the only thing I wish I had tried was the ceviche but that's for next time. Must try is the Costa Rican coffee served in a traditional manner. Next must try is their empanadas! Housemade and the dough is phenomenal. Filling we tried was beef.

I would go back again in a heartbeat. This was one of the best meals and experiences of the year…read more The shaved prime rib steak with the dipping au jus plus French onion soup as an appetizer... this was phenomenal. Every aspect from the sauce to the baguette to the meat was so tasty. I also recommend getting the garlic aoli for the fries. The drinks were very well done and unique in flavor as well, in particular I tried to the midnight show which was like a raspberry espresso martini. It was fantastic. The ambiance of the place is spectacular as well with a cool, library naturally, vibe. The servers were also great and helped accommodate my date who is gluten free, and her baguette replacement was the best that she'd ever had of a gluten free option. All in all top tier experience start to finish.

Good selection of drinks and great customer service. Fun facts: The Royal York Hotel opened in 1929. It hosted royalty, heads of state, and golden-age Hollywood legends like Cary Grant and Alfred Hitchcock when they were in town filming or staying upstairs in the hotel. Stepping inside is like time-traveling back decades, with velvet seating, brass accents, and dark, moody lighting. As soon as you walk into the Library Bar, the real centerpiece that grabs your attention is the massive oil portrait above the fireplace. That dignified gentleman watching you sip your drink is George Locke, the very first chief librarian of the Toronto Public Library. I love that a librarian is the patron saint of this bar! The drinks here aren't just cocktails; they're chapters in a story. The current menu, titled "Ink & Alchemy," is actually inspired by Michael Ondaatje's famous novel In the Skin of a Lion. Created by their award-winning mixologist James Grant, the menu is a tribute to the people who built this city: the immigrants, bridge-builders, thieves, and dreamers. You aren't just sipping a martini; you're drinking a liquid homage to Toronto's history.

The aesthetic is precise without being cold, and the candle-warm lighting encourages exactly the kind of unhurried conversation that a well-made cocktail deserves. But the bartenders are the true heart of the place. On the evening of my visit, the two behind the bar moved with a remarkable synchrony -- finishing each other's thoughts, trading warmth and wit in equal measure, drawing guests effortlessly into the orbit of their easy rapport. It is the kind of hospitality that cannot be trained into existence; it is either present or it isn't, and here it is very much present.
