During our one-week visit in Cody, we dined at the El Vaquero three times. This is a mom and pops authentic Mexican restaurant with no frills, kind and friendly staff, made from scratch food that is yummy, and an honest effort to serve folks as fast as they can. It is not a fast-food restaurant, but my husband and I were amazed at how quickly dishes were prepared. Wish we had this restaurant in our hometown. When we return for another visit to Cody, we will certainly dine here. Lots of local and return out-of-town customers. This was a quiet little place. The food was good. I ordered the combination and it was tasty but not so spicy that my mouth was burning (I'm a wimp when it comes to spices). It was clean and the staff was friendly, but not overly attentive. If you looking for a relaxed atmosphere and don't need constant attention this is a great place to eat. I will be back. read more

The food was excellent. The dining room was clean but not updated or ant fancy decor. We came in at exactly 5p. There was only one older woman working(that we saw). She was very nice. Accommodating to my food preference. I ordered carne asada which was strip steak. It was excellent. My sister ordered combo had tamale, taco and enchilada. She said hers was excellent also. The place doesn't look like much from the outside and is pretty small inside. Nothing fancy, but the food was very good. Tamale was a light slightly crumbly masa rather than the dense tamales I'm used to. I thought it was delicious. I had the combo plate, chicken enchilada with white sauce, ground beef taco, & pork tamale with green sauce. Yelp led me here, drove by it a few times as the sign doesn't jump out at you and there really isn't a store front. Food was excellent and the service was as well. We dined here on our way through Cody from Yellowstone to Sturgis. It's a bit hard to find, and you'll miss it if you aren't careful. There's not much of a sign outside and the outside looks worse than the inside. Upon entering, there was a very sloppy looking younger guy who not very friendly. He looked at us with no smile and said "in our out?" We almost turned around and left! He appeared dirty and had plastic gloves on but was using his hands for everything, including handling payments and dirty dishes, plastic gloves must have been for show. We ordered ice water and when he brought them back he bumped into my arm spilling my water and said "excuse you!" With the Covid virus, his handling of glasses and silverware is very concerning. In addition, he was setting glasses down by the tops, glad we had straws. Yuck! He took very long to take our order, even though we were the only people there. Finally after he got orders for two other carry out customers, he came back to take our order. He did bring us chips and salsa and a refill on the chips. They were warm and fresh, very authentic chips. We ordered a shredded beef chimichanga with green sauce ($11) and a vegetarian burrito ($9), both with rice and refried beans. Huge portions. I cannot understand how there can be a 4 star status for this business. We used Yelp to find this restaurant with high expectations. My Son and Wife accompanied me at around 6pm for a dinner meal. We walked in and were not acknowledged by the young man who was working the dining room. In the absence of any posted guidance we proceeded to seat ourselves which turned out to be the accepted practice here. After a 15 minute wait the young man took our drink order. The Pepsi was flat though the margaritas that my son and I ordered were okay, nothing special at 5.99 each. After another 15 minute waite our order was taken and we waited approximately 25 minutes for our meals. There were 3 other tables besides ours table and 10 customers over this time period being served. The meals arrived, my son and I had the beef fajitas meal which was 22. The only remarkable aspect of this meal was that the beef was tender. Other than that the two tortillas that came with the plate for each of us were just about enough to fill with the few pieces of onion and green and yellow pepper peices. There was little flavor and the refried beans tasted canned though the yellow rice was fresh made. The combination plate my wife ordered was mainly left on the plate as she advised the meal was bland and unappetizing. The young man never came back to our table to check on us and I went directly to the register to pay for the meal as no bill appeared to be making it's way toward us. This appears to be a family run small business that does not value their customers. My recommendation is that you pass over this business if you value your money. read more

We ate at this restaurant when it was only open for about four months. We were the only ones there and felt like the couple who owns the place had invited us into their home. The food was phenomenal. Their pico de gallo was to die for and their guacamole was even better! They literally cut up all the vegetables on the spot and they will make anything the way you ask. This is as authentic of Mexican as I've had, and obviously would encourage everyone to give it a try. It's nice to eat at a place these days where the owners actually appreciate your business. We drive past this place every day and always wondered about it so we finally decided to stop in and the only con... It was a Saturday so they weren't open the next day! The food was delicious and fresh. Best guacamole ever. Got a horchata based on my Mexican friends recommendation and it was to die for! Like Christmas in a drink! I was hoping for a nice dinner with my husband but did not get it here. Acknowledging your guests would've been nice and service is soooo slow. Besides us in the restaurant there was only one other table occupied and they left shortly after we arrived, so I didn't understand the "Tick Tock, Tick Tock, Tick Tock" of our wait. The chips were so salty, I might as well been licking a salt block. I asked for a taco salad. It's not on the menu so they wouldn't make it. I opted for their shredded beef burrito and my husband ordered the 2 cheese enchilada plate with a soft (ground beef) taco on the side. The food was kind of bland, just lacking in flavor overall, nothing special here to write home about. Alex (our server) rings us up at the register and it was almost $30, I asked how could that be? My burrito was $10 and my husbands was $8. Alex states it's for the side single taco. Serious $7 for a small round beef taco? He just made up that price! There's no single item price list on the menu. Then he had the audacity to say to me, "Is this too much for you to pay for a taco? Why "YES" Alex, it's actually too much for anybody to pay for one taco. That taco had regular ground beef, not Kobe Beef and definitely not Wagyu Beef! This restaurant might be a local favorite (perhaps because your options are few) , but that doesn't constitute rude, disrespectful behavior or price gouging either!
