Came here for lunch with a few friends and had the absolute worst customer service. My friend at the table was given the wrong type of enchilada, and when she asked for the right one our server proceeded to say that that was what she ordered and would not be getting a refund or a new meal. Later she returned saying that it was not her fault and she would not be paying for the meal (which we did not ask her to do). The food was amazing but the atmosphere was not it. Don't get malena as your server. Won't be coming back!!!!!! read more

Walked in after a 3 hour drive and was seated five minutes later so It looked good. But they sat us the waitress got our drink order and got us chips and vanished. After a while I noticed people that where seated after us were eating, and some leaving cause they had been served already. Well we got up to leave to see what they would say and pay for our drinks atleast. Nothing the hostess told us it was fine that no charge for the drinks and not even an apology for never getting our order or even a reason to why we got such poor service. read more

Tasty Mexican food at reasonable prices. We each got the 4 street tacos so we could share. We had al pastor & Barbacoa. The flavors were spot on and the corn tortillas are the best I've ever had. I got a Michelada with modelo. It is served in a huge beer stein. The tomato base is yummy and mixed well with my beer. Hubs got a house frozen margarita and it is served in a large glass as well. Good flavor, plenty of tequila. The food comes out quickly and the service is terrific. We would definitely return when in the area. read more

The biggest reason for only the one star was to warn people off after reading all the good reviews here. I read them and was greatly disappointed when I visited. The other reason is because I happened to look up and saw the vents in the dining room...absolutely disgusting. That has to be about a year's worth of grime up there. Had I seen that before my food came, I would have walked out. Now for the food itself: Salsa was tasty, but not even close to being spicy...I'd give it a 2 out of 10 for heat factor. Rice and beans were good but the main entree was incredibly mediocre. Having lived in San Diego, my expectations when I hear someone from LA say it was the best Mexican food they've ever had, I expect the steak to be cooked perfectly and have lots of flavor on its own. If this is the best Amarillo can do for Mexican food, then you're better off at Taco Bell or one of the chain restaurants. At least you know what to expect and know how much you'll pay. Overall, this place wasn't BAD BAD, but there are too many people that have done reviews on this restaurant that apparently have never eaten at a good Mexican restaurant, and I can only imagine what the kitchen looks like after seeing the dining room...yuck. read more

I was enjoying a meal with some colleagues around 12-1 today and witnessed an incident that left a bad taste in my mouth (other than the food). We had seen the table next to us get their food and when the table returned a wrong dish to the waitress, she started cursing them out in Spanish. The people at the table obviously had no idea what she was saying but as someone who knows Spanish as a first language, I understood everything that was said. Very unprofessional and impolite. Not the way servers should treat customers in my opinion. Won't be coming back. read more

This is my favorite Mexican food restaurant ever. It definitely has more authentic flavors when compared to the vast majority of Tex-Mex restaurants in Amarillo. I'm going to tell you what to do.. 1) Bring a small jacket, because it tends to be chilly in here. 2) Get a margarita or three (suuuuuper cheap if it's during happy hour) 3) Get the al pastor taco plate with a side of the homemade corn tortillas. Actually, get any dish, I dare you.. You won't be disappointed. 4) You might need more corn tortillas, because you will eat them so fast. 5) Come back and write a Yelp review on how right I was. The food and drinks were good - not great. I would have given four stars except for the service. We came in over an hour before closing, the restaurant was at least a third full. Our waitress was clearly ready to leave and all the wait staff were cleaning for closing including rolling the mop bucket through the dining hall twice and starting to mop. On one trip, the mop bucket almost hit my husband's elbow as we were eating. I totally understand wanting to leave work but smelling mop water and being rushed out doesn't make for an enjoyable time. read more

The salsa is spicy...which I love...because most salsa appeal to a ketchup loving crowd. This place got pretty good reviews from Yelp but I did not find anything remarkable with it. The salsa and chips were pretty bland. They had beef tostadas which seemed alright but not really inspired either. I can't say I will make a major effort to return because I know there are tastier places in town; I have been to some! read more

Absolutely loved the food here. I had enchiladas that had a nice bite to it. The guacamole had a surprising kick. A nice touch. My server was a very nice young lady who was very attentive. The atmosphere was great - a guy playing a guitar at the entrance, tasteful decorations and nice furniture. It was pretty busy on a Friday night at 7pm but we got a table right away. However, we were seated in the corner and the hostess forgot to send us a waiter for 20 minutes. However, to compensate, our food was brought out pretty quickly after that. I had the ceviche and my wife had the enchildas. Apparently it is real mexican food because I've never had anything like it. I am always excited to find an authentic Mexican restaurant and El Tejavan is no exception. Great house salsa - spicier than most house salsa in the area, but a lot of Mexican in the area seems to cater to the elderly crowd. Unfortunately, portions are on the smaller side, but between the bottomless chips, and the beans and rice I never leave feeling hungry. Expect $8-$10 a person. A freak hailstorm in Elk City forced a cross country road trip to a screeching halt in Amarillo, TX. Not knowing much about the city, bleary-eyed and bummed out my boyfriend and I poked around for a good place to eat and settled on El Tejavan. A major plus was that it was opened on a Sunday, pretty rare it seems for a lot of the non-chain restaurants in town. The service was quick and nice and the restaurant is a lot cleaner and more spacious on the inside than it might seem from the outside. The rice here was amazing, easily the best we ate on our entire trip, including our extended stay in the Bay Area. The portions are HUGE and everything tasted fresh and delicious. The salsa was spicy and nothing we ordered was drowned in cheese. Although we enjoyed the meal while we were eating it, looking back now it was probably the best meal of our entire drive. Wonderful find! Easy to pass by if you aren't looking...in between car/jewelry sales place and something else...:) but worth taking the time to find. First, the guacamole. Oh my goodness! I ordered another serving right then and there. Chunky avacodo mixed with pico de gallo. Blew us away. My guest had the soft tacos with beef. Excellent flavor..simple and let the ingredients shine thru. Corn tortillas obviously handmade. Cilantro sprinkled across the top. I had the pork burritos with green sauce. Slightly spicey but nothing that anyone can't handle. Again, ingredients shined thru. Had Tres leche' cake for dessert. Wonderful, moist and delicate flavors. We had the intentions of trying this place based on the reviews not only from Yelp, but family and friends. The first Impression I had was influenced by the smell. It smelled very good inside, and it excited my stomach. The atmosphere was very inviting and casual. We sat down and were quickly asked what we wanted to drink and if we wanted appetizers. I read a review that talked about how disgusting the place looked, but looking around the place seemed to be very clean. Soon our drinks arrived and we placed our order. After enjoying a cold Horchata, fresh Tortilla Chips and Guacamole for a few minutes our food arrived. The appearance of both dishes looked amazing. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for it's flavor. My Carne Asada Steak itself lacked flavor, as did the green Guisado De Puerco. The rice was slightly under-cooked, but both Frijoles Charros and refried beans were really good. After scouting yelp for an authentic Mexican restaurant while traveling through Texas, I found this great place. I ordered the fish burritos and they were delicious! This place was packed, and I would assume they're always busy because the food and service were both very good. I doubt I'll ever be back through this area, but if so I'll definitely be making a stop by this place again. read more

@eltejavanrestaurant has been a long time staple in Amarillo, TX and has been one of @annaleebelle's favorites for many years so naturally we had to go while visiting there. As per usual, the customer service was great. Pinky rating: * * * Unfortunately, the last two times I've eaten here the food has not been up to the standard of what I remember. One of the first things on which I judge Mexican restaurants is their guacamole and for me, when it's drowned in lime juice and has almost more pico than avocado, I'm outsies. My barbacoa tacos had great flavor in the meat, but I wasn't terribly impressed with the rest of my plate. The tres leches cake for which my brother and I were so excited was also a bit of a let down as it wasn't as moist as we hoped it would be. So I've eaten Mexican and Tex-Mex in Texas quite a bit especially in Austin. I have to say other than the refried Beans and the Rice, which were very good, the rest was ok. Chulupas I had were not very tasty. Tacos my son had were average. Waitresses were nice. Place was ok but I expect better in Texas even if Rick Perry is Governor - sorry couldnt resist!! read more

Our waiter, Rafa was fabulous. The kitchen does an awesome job of getting the food out quick & hot. I loved the barbacoa tacos. My wife said the alpastor marinated beef were excellent as well. I wish i could give this place a 4.5, it goes hard in the paint. Tied for my favorite place in HAmarillo. Had some nice AF enchiladas like i get back in Mexico with queso fresco on top. Will return for another round for sure. Also had the gorditas, a personal favorite of mine growing up. Deliciously fried pockets of masa stuffed with meat and veggies. Okay but not great - I'll just do a quick pros/cons to summarize. The salsa, guacamole, and margaritas were all really, really good. I'd go back for those alone. However the chips were overdone and not very tasty and my carne asada was just bad - way too tough to be enjoyable. We came here for lunch and quickly remembered that the dining area is very loud, very echoey. Definitely, can hear other conversations pretty easily (I say this because I'm pretty sure our neighbors were listening to our conversation). The drinks were inconsistent. I ordered the same drink as my friend after she ordered the Amarillo by Morning, but mine was weaker than hers. Our food was good. I ordered the chicken fajitas for two and they were definitely sliced ultra thin and spread across the plate maybe so it could seem like a lot. The green peppers, rice and beans were very small servings, maybe a 1/4 cup of rice. The chips were ok but the salsa was very tasty! The service was decent. read more

El Tejavan has excellent authentic mexican dishes. To start, they have the best guacamole (chunky with onions/cilantro) paired with incredible hot sauce. Moving on the main course dishes...all wonderful. I am extremely fond of the marinated pork tacos. The gorditas are some of the best I have ever had as well. You basically can't go wrong... The also have a breakfast on the weekends. A full bar is now available with great happy hour specials. Very good if you like your Mexican food spicy. Not so good if you are a bland fan. The salsa arrives in a carafe with a separate bowl for each diner. Refill your own. Chile Rellenos are excellent. Soft tacos are very well seasoned. Had Adobado and Al Pastor (no pineapple and with beef, not pork ) Lots of chopped Cilantro, onions and lime wedges. Very good guacamole. We drove across the country from LA to Washington, DC. We only had a few hours in Texas and found this place right off 40 by doing some sleuthing on the internet. Without question this was the best Mexican food I have ever had. The three of us were raving for days. The service was great. We devoured the complimentary chips and the salsa, which btw, was the best salsa ever, though you need to be able to handle a little kick. I had the beef tacos, which were delicious. Paco soze loves his mexican food. Loves it more than his wife and son, in fact. This is good mexican food. The chicken tacos with the corn tortillas were excellent, maybe a bit small. The hot salsa ranks about a 5 of 10 on the heat scale, still very tasty. Guacamole is great. very chunky with bits of tomato. A little over 8 bucks procured three tacos, three little wedges of lime, a lynch, er.... lunch bag of chips and a cup of mild salsa, beans/rice, and a large dollop of guac. Good service and great food. Driving thru town and sure picked the right spot to stop. Authentic Mexican food. Just being from where good water is id say don't drink the water. Lol.
