Loved the spicy salsa!!! I had the chicken fajitas vegetarian style. This is a must try. Peppers, onions, potatoes, zucchini and carrots!! Such a unique twist on a traditional dish. Food was good. Fresh salsa for chips and Yes, they do have freshly made corn only (not flour) tortillas which you can buy individually for $0.75. I only wanted to try them and I was glad I only order one tortilla since it was really big! I had the Horchata for a drink and I absolutely loved it! Really good taste and very refreshing. Had the sopes plate it comes with two sopes, (choices are chicken, beef and pork) and sides are rice and beans. I ordered one chicken and one pastor beef. I was pretty full but I had to order dessert and I have had churros before but not like this. 4 churros filled with cajeta, accompanied by ice cream and topped with whip cream. Yes, dessert was a lot for one person. Perfect for sharing. All of this for a total of $17.91.....and now I'm off to the gym! read more

The fish soup is delicious. They us catfish in their fish soup and I wasn't sure it would work--but it worked beautifully well. The fish soup is one of the more expensive offerings on the menu and it's worth every cent. If you're not a soup eater, try the chicken mole. Their mole sauce has a rich dark-chocolate flavor and chicken was roasted to perfections. Very delicious Mexican food. I have had their carne asada plate and today I went back for the enchilada plate. I was very happy with both of those dishes. My husband had the caldo de res since he is a little sick and he said it was so delicious, he feels better already. I love the fact that they have Mexican cokes! Oh my gosh!! Best "Street Taco's" in town in my opinion. Chicken are my Fave! Excellent! Love the Chicken enchiladas too! Go ahead and have the queso sauce on the Chicken Enchiladas. It's light and luscious! Not overpowering like many cheese based sauces. Lots of variety on the menu. Something for everyone. Their soups look amazing. I'm planning on trying them soon. read more

We loved this place because it was so inviting and clean! The service was friendly and you could tell it was going to be good because it was really busy for a Thursday night. My husband and I were on a road trip back home to San Diego, California. I am Mexican and felt the food was very authentic presented well and tasted so fresh. I have a gluten allergy and there were plenty of options. They make corn tortillas in house and they were able to accommodate for my needs. I had three chicken enchiladas with green sauce and my husband also had chicken enchiladas with red sauce. Drinks were reasonable priced and their happy hour drink specials look to be a steal. They had too shelf tequila as well. Everything was clean and our server was really kind and attentive. We were there late and the staff had began cleaning. Today was a horrible experience. Came in with a big group of family to celebrate a birthday. I understand being short handed and things happen sometimes. after everyone ordered and food was brought out I never received mine. After talking to the manager who did nothing for me other then make sure I wasn't charged for it and everyone was finished eating I was asked by my waitresses if I wanted my food. there was no point to getting as the reason I was there was to eat with everyone. so I would not recommend this place again. This place is FABULOUS. Talk about authentic... when you order a margarita, you get a margarita-- a traditional styled one (tequila, lime, triple sec), not the kind that's mostly sour mix. It's got the only house salsa in town I will eat aside from La Campana (as a reference point, I prefer my salsa heavy on the onion and very spicy-- this stuff fits the bill). The barbacoa's killer. And they actually use cotija on the enchiladas. There's only one Mexican place in town that's better (La Campana), and that's mostly due to it being cheaper. read more

This WAS my favorite restaurant. Maybe they are under new management/ownership now. First they seated us directly under the AC vent and we bounced between freezing and baking. Food arrived lukewarm. Usually the meal I order comes with several tortillas, but this time I got one. When I asked, the waitress told me "They were getting stingy." No joke. My daughter asked for sour cream, which apparently does not come with a quesidilla anymore. When I complained about the sour cream, which I was charged extra for, the waitress told me they were trying to "Make it go further". My wife complained to the manager and was told the waitress was full of BS, but they declined to do anything to fix the situation. This place *is* authentic. My husband & I had not had arrachera or puerco adobado like this since we lived in Mexico. Such a wonderful find. Homemade tortillas, chunky guac, perfectly marinated & cooked meats. Just like my favorite taco stand @ Insurgentes & Laz. Cardenas in Puerto Vallarta, El Tejavan's food is authentic, hand made, & delish. The guy who compared this place to Taco Bell is seriously mental. 2nd time here, kind of disappointed in the restaurant, even though the food was good. There was a 5 gallon bucket in the middle of the dining room floor to catch a leak from an A/C vent. Another vent was broken to the point it was about to fall down. The pedestal sink in the men's room was not secured at the bottom and rocked back and forth. If the food hadn't been as good as it was, I wouldn't be back. Fix the restaurant. read more

They have some of the very best Mexican food in town, or anywhere for that matter. However, 75% of the time, the service is terrible. They have a few excellent servers (Jessica is one!), and we always ask for one of them by name - however, they aren't always there. I do not understand why so many of their servers never come back to check on the tables, forget to bring items ordered, and don't come back with the ticket. The food is so good that we continue going back, but management REALLY needs to get a handle on the poor service. It isn't an isolated incident. The table next to us at our last visit was experiencing the same issue. Their sever never returned to check on them and never brought a ticket. They finally got up and found someone at the front to ring them up. The food is 5 star, but service is 2 star at best. read more

I just moved to Amarillo about a month ago and have been looking for a place that sells breakfast tacos. Not just some drive through, bacon, egg and cheese tacos but real, could have been made by someone's abuela tacos. With positive Yelp reviews to go from, I decided to give El Tejavan a try. When I asked about breakfast tacos, they told me they had breakfast burritos, made with flour tortillas. (I've never heard of that specific distinction before.) She showed me the size of tortilla they used (packaged, not made in house) and it seemed as reasonable size so I ordered a chorizo, egg and Mexican cheese as well as barbacoa to go. These burritos are huge, I couldn't eat both! I finished the barbacoa and it tasted good. Not too salty, a bit greasy - perfect. Although I was full, I tasted the other burrito (for the sake of the review, of course) and it was also yummy. The chorizo was a little spicy but not greasy and it's obviously cooked together with the egg. Again, not too salty. I also got chips and salsa with my to go order (unexpected) but will save that for later, as well as the rest of the second burrito. The total was over $6 and that is more than I'd normally pay for two tacos but then again, the ones I'm used to are much smaller so $3 for breakfast to go is reasonable. I'll go again. read more

We tried this restaurant as a result of the reviews on Yelp. It was quite good and the service was attentive. The restaurant is a very nice place and there seemed to be a lot of large families eating there and people seem to be enjoying themselves. The house margaritas were good, but a bit strong. In Amarillo finding a no smoking restaurant is heaven in itself. The food here is great (well above and beyond other restaurants). I will say it is not tex-mex which seems to be the style that is most appreciated in the area. One drawback to this and many Mexican restaurants in Amarillo is that they don't have anything but refried beans. read more

I was driving from Oklahoma City to Santa Fe, so this was a great place to stop for a mid-day meal. The restaurant is just off of I-40, so it is very convenient, and they have their own private lot, so parking is not a problem. I ordered the 3-taco plate with grilled beef and a side of sour cream. WOW! Went in for breakfast and just WOW. Clean, defined, authentic flavors very obviously done with love. The corn tortillas totally tasted like they just came from your Mexican grandma's kitchen. And the chorizo was killer, just the right amount of firmness (not chewy), grease (just a enough to taste not enough to leave a smear on the plate) and spice (a subtle burn)... Who knew I could get real Mexican food in Amarillo. Wow! I was pleasantly surprised. The corn tortillas are freshly made there. The salsa had actual spices in it. I've been going to El Tejavan for 18+ years basically since the day I was born. This is legit the best authentic Mexican food anyone can get. Since I am from out of town, my family and I decided to try out this restaurant out with the help from Yelp since it has 4 stars rating. I'm sad to say, I am very disappointed. Our food came out bland with no flavor. My husband(who is full Mexican) and kids ordered Carne Asada and I ordered Caldo De Rez. The Asada meats were still bland even when they added Salt and Limes. They were hard to cut and chew as well. The Mexican rice were undercooked. We ate 1 bite and that was it. My soup were bland and and hardly have any veggies and only 3 small pieces of meat. They charged us $11 for it. The rest room can only be use 1 person at the time. Just very disappointed. read more
