16. Three Taquitos Rancheros
Virginia T.

We go here often. Authentic atmosphere. Great food! Friendly staff and yummy margaritas!!

Taco take out
Anthony A.

We were in the area and just wanted a quick snack. I ordered the three taco deal togo. They whipped it up in 10 minutes and we were to be on our way. Ooops. I had to ask for napkins and utensils after spending $18 and $2 tip? Then they only put one fork in the bag and two napkins when I told them I was eating in the car. Bad service. The tacos were bland. No flavor at all. We ended up tossing at least 50% of it away. Next time I will keep rolling to another spot.

Veggie Fajitas

This place absolutely does not deserve the low ratings it has. Great service, wonderful ambience and delicious food. My partner and I had vegetarian options (veggie burrito and the veggie fajitas) and were both very happy with our selections. Lots of food too for the money. We will definitely be back.

Chips and salsa on the table as soon as you sit.

Best Mexican food in and around Portland. Service is amazing every single time! They have good a/c for these hot days and great seating. I moved to N Portland and still go out of my way to come here.

Chalupa and enchilada platter
Steven B.

My dinner, Chalupa and Enchilada Platter, did not rate up there with my favorite Mexican restaurant servings in the past however I found my dinner to be decent enough and there was nothing wrong with anything. My first inclination was to give a 3 star rating but after comparing my experience to other comparable Mexican restaurants I have been to, and that's a lot, I really feel inclined to give them 4 stars. The apparent quality of the ingredients and the preparation of the food really rose above many other places. It tasted just fine. Nothing swimming in grease or oil. The portion for the price was very fair and the service was prompt, extremely gracious and friendly. I would have been happier if my food was hotter....

Lovely seating options.

Beyond friendly service...and not the fake friendly, but real deal authentic and timely. Delicious food, really good margaritas (at very reasonable prices). The salsa is yummy - get lots!! And everything we got tasted super fresh and delicious. Cannot wait to visit again.

Pollo a la Crema, strawberry margarita

Definitely my favorite sit down Mexican restaurant. I've never had a bad experience here. The pollo a la crema is my go to!

Trio Fajitas
Vivian F.

I am pleasantly surprised by how good this place is. I had a craving for fajitas and placed an order for pickup. I got the trio fajitas, jalapeño poppers, and churros. The meal was ready in about 25mins, was packaged so nice and securely and reasonable priced. Let me tell you the fajitas were delish! Huge prawns, lots of tender streak, and juicy chicken. They even packaged all the toppings securely too. The poppers weren't actually jalapeños but bell peppers instead which was kinda bummer but still yummy and the churros were so delicious I stuffed 2 of them down even tho I could hardly breath from being so full already. I will be coming back here again for the huge portions and well priced meals.

DELICIOUS! Combo fajitas for two comes with two orders of sides and choice of tortillas. And an ala carte cheese Enchilada.

It's a Portland staple. Nothing too exciting. It's not amazing but it does the deed. The service is wonderful and the salsa and chips rock.

I love the fact they have a privacy strip on the windows (so no one walking by watches you eat). It's a family owned restaurant and, I would recommend giving them a try. Both the fish and the prawns were cooked in a red sauce that was delicious! I meant to ask for blue corn tortillas but was so excited to find shrimp & fish tacos that weren't deep-fried that I forgot to ask for them. The regular corn tortillas were excellent, though, so it was not a bad mistake to make. I also had jamaica to drink and let me tell you... it was not made from a mix! It was dark, thirst-quenching, and perfectly made. Most jamaica is super sweet - this was not! I love the flavor of real hibiscus and this did not disappoint. My friends had chile relleno bowls and birria tacos, all of which was excellent. Their watermelon margaritas were tasty and refreshing! Our orders were taken by a helpful person at the cash register and the food was served quickly by a friendly server. The inside and outside areas were clean and tidy, with plenty of seating available at the outside tables. The outdoor seating area is under cover making it a good choice for both summer & winter dining. Definitely going on my "have to go back and try something else" list!

We decided to do the $45 lunch deal where we let them feed us and basically got a 10 course lunch (totally worth it)! Since we tried so many things, some courses were a miss and some were a big hit. It was really fun! Some of my favorites were the arroz con frijoles, yes the rice and beans! They are so flavorful and served with house made tortillas. I think my favorite thing was the tostada topped with white beans, cabbage, and roasted corn - insane! I also loved the Huarache with adobo squash and I'm not normally into smokey things, but everything just worked together. I wasn't the biggest fan of one of the moles we were served, but there was a sweeter one that was paired with eggplant that I couldn't stop eating. We ended the meal with 2 desserts and 1 came with a candle for our friend, which is always such a lovely gesture. The fried concha was incredible!! GET IT! Ours had ground cherries and a lime whipped cream and I would come back just for that. This is definitely a spot that's worth the tasting menu! There are so many flavors to explore you will want to try everything!

For the amount of food and the overall experience, I thought it was a great way to experience the restaurant. Ángel took care of us and made the meal even more memorable by telling us the story and inspiration behind each dish as it came out. It made the tasting feel like much more than just trying a bunch of different dishes. I'm definitely a carnivore and usually feel like a meal needs some kind of meat, but surprisingly, my favorite dish was the mole with eggplant and rice. The mole was delicious, and I genuinely didn't miss having meat on the plate. I would happily order that dish again exactly as it was. The tomates en salsa arabe were another standout. I really enjoyed how fresh the dish tasted, especially with the seasonal tomatoes they were using. I also had the carnitas tacos, which had great flavor and texture. For dessert, we had what was essentially a fried concha, and I loved that it wasn't overly sweet. It had just the right amount of sweetness for me and was a great way to finish the meal. Overall, I highly recommend doing the full tasting menu at República. For around $40 per person, you get to experience the entire menu, and if you're lucky enough to have Ángel there to walk you through the stories and concepts behind the dishes, it makes the experience that much better.

Inside is my favorite spot - the light is good, everything is nice, and it stays cooler in the hot months (won't everything be the hot months soon?). My friend loves eating outside - those adjustable, wall-mounted tables are great. I have only had four items from their menu: the bean torta (the first thing I bought and took to eat with a friend - so long ago I remember nothing!), the tostada (nothing that stands out, but definitely fresh), the burger (I got it without ham and it blew my mind!), and the Cart Bowl. Reader, there is something about that bowl that makes it almost impossible to order something else. I did those two times, but once I had tasted the Cart Bowl with their chicken and avocado, it was game over. For a while (3 years?), I came here with a friend every Thursday evening. Every Thursday I had the bowl. I never got tired of it. The way they cook their meat, the flavors of all the ingredients when combined, always tastes perfect. I have had their margaritas. They are really delicious!! They also have bottle and tap beer options. I usually come during the day, so try to resist the margarita (margarita = mid-day nap time), but I look at other people's longingly. It is first come, first seated. The weekday lunch rush can be frustrating, so don't come if you have limited time to get back to work.
