Surfin' California Burrito

I've been coming here every week for a long time, but lately the food quality has been inconsistent. The Surfing California burrito, in particular, has been very hit or miss over the past year--sometimes the shrimp lacks seasoning, other times there's barely any sauce. On my most recent visit, the burrito was noticeably smaller than usual. The asada was scarce and cut very small, the shrimp was overcooked and tough, and I even bit into a full shrimp tail, which was extremely off-putting. This was a disappointing experience, and I hope this review helps bring attention to quality control so things can get back to the standard that originally made this place a weekly stop for me.

I don't recall the name but it tastes like Crispy potatoes rolls

The taco here was yummy and different flavors to choose from the menu. The store was busy so we got to order some food for takeout. They gave us a beeper for waiting to get our food ready. The staffs were talking in their language so the food should be authentic and they were really good to enjoy different foods here.

Nothing wrong with some good tacos & burritos! My daughter just moved a couple blocks away and we've eaten here a few times. Always good. I'm not a fan of the green salsa, but that's me. Red salsa is delish! My last visit I just grabbed a couple tacos - carnitas & chili relleno for $7, thank you very much!

i've ordered from here quite a bit and staff members seem to always be decently nice! but today i found a strand of dark, wavy hair in my food and i called the restaurant to let them know and they took no accountability and refused to get me a manger or help me out in any way. this is really disappointing because i really liked this place. safe to say i will not be eating here anymore :/

I ordered online. I ordered a quesabirria and I don't even know how to explain what I got but here's the pictures. I asked for no onions and got onions. And there's no cheese. Forgot the consume too. I don't have a picture of the beans and cheese but you'd be better off making your own sides.

Cool And Delicious

Absolutely delicious food . I was here visiting from L.A . We found Azteca after a long day and was pleasantly surprised to find it open. Enjoyed the carne asada burro and chicken quesadilla . There's a small patio and dinning area inside . Give it a try if you love good south of the border cooking .

I visited El Burrito Azteca a few weeks ago for the first time. I'm enjoying trying Mexican restaurants in Portland and I'm happy to note that I enjoyed my visit and burrito at this restaurant. This restaurant is in the Portland Eater Article which features 14 big burritos in Portland. The burrito that is highlighted is the Surfin California which includes guacamole, shrimp, asada, and fries. It's not my usual order but I enjoyed the burrito and the two salsas available to put on it. The horchata was good. The service was good as well. Overall, it's a great taqueria to visit if you are close by.

Super solid choice for local Mexican flavors my only complaint was they forgot our chips and salsa with our to-go order so alas we did without. We ordered some ground beef tacos, chimichanga plate, and a bean and rice burrito. They gave us ample amount of sauces just missing that order of chips and salsa. Everything tastes fresh and the portions are pretty big. I really enjoyed my bean and rice burrito. By the time we arrived, ordered, and left with our food there ended up being a pretty large crowd dining in, so it looks like this place gets packed, which is great! The ordering process is really straightforward, you walk-in, order at the counter, your receipt has a number, they call your number and voila.

Can you take a quiet newborn in the bar area?

Probably, assuming it is before 9:30 pm and you are sitting at tables rather than the service bar. It is chilly from AC and might be too loud. Opting for the family dining room may be better. Cheers!

It is the kind of place you instantly feel comfortable settling into. Everyone we interacted with was incredibly kind, and the service was genuinely great throughout. We ordered the Quekas with vegan chorizo and black beans and they were SO good, honestly a standout. The chips and guac were also a hit, and I loved that the guac was actually cold. Such a small detail that makes a big difference. The Citrus Salad was super fresh, crisp, and delicious, which balanced everything out perfectly. I also tried the NA classic margarita and it was so refreshing. I loved the subtle touch of orange juice. Overall, such a lovely spot with amazing food, great vibes, and thoughtful details. Today my wife and I enjoyed scrumptious Tacotes, one chicken and one Bok Choy with house made salsa. Also, the Tetela de Requeson, maiz, beans and sprouting broccoli with a house made requeson - kind of like ricotta cheese - very beautifully plated and so delicious. Extra side of yummy and creamy black bean frijoles with sour cream, butter, tortillas. Instead of desert, the Mezcal, chile and lime was refreshing. Right now open for lunch Thursday through Sunday 10-3pm. No fixed menu, changes with what's fresh - the way chef Angel loves to cook respecting what is in season. Service and ambiance is friendly and knowledgeable about the food and its origin - another reason I love dining here so I learn about what I'm eating and how it was inspired. Yes, the food plated looks so good, I am inspired to dig in. There's a reason it was recognized early in its start by Eater, Portland Monthly and the Oregonian as one of the best restaurants in the city because foodies seek out and love to go where the food experience is special - especially the chef tasting menus in the past. Now I'm watchful and ready to go back and see what the chef Angel is serving up. What else is so special is Republica was a James Beard award nominee too!

I was excited to go here as I had been meaning to visit for at least 6 months. I wasn't disappointed. This taqueria is the real deal, and very authentic. I also appreciate it's LGBTQ owned, and like to be inclusive in how I spend money. The tacos are amazing I had two there, and took two home. They were all delicious and not one disappointed. Their taco menu is very extensive, and it's nice that they have a lot of vegetarian options as well. One of my favorites was the one with mole ,and poblanos, also the chicken one, also the carnitas. Flavors so rich and satisfying. The staff is very friendly, and helpful. Extremely quick service which I love. Even though I only speak a little bit of Spanish. I tried, and they were very welcoming. They are fluent in Spanish. I knew it was an authentic taqueria when I heard a native spanish speaker speak Spanish at the counter. I don't want to leave out their drinks as they have quite a selection both alcoholic, and non alcoholic. I tried the horchata, which was amazing. I have been craving Pozole for a long time, and they had it as a special chicken with green sauce, and pork and a red sauce. Both simply amazing and a great deal. This restaurant is very reasonable, and you get quite a lot for the money. Last but not least I can't forget the ambiance which felt very authentic, and reminded me of being in a Taqueria in Mexico or Southern California. the place is decorated very thoughtful with a lot of candles, and many shrines. They also have a love of Mariah Carey and saw many photos of here in the restaurant. They have both outdoor seating and indoor seating. A lot of plants outside which all seem very happy and well cared for. I love this place, and will be going back for sure. The place is very casual which I appreciate. By the time we left around 6 PM, the dinner rush had started and a line was forming at the door. The interior is well decorated, modern, and clean. The server was friendly and service was fast. We ordered the bowl, one with carnitas and other with avocado. Both were very tasty! You can tell that the ingredients were fresh, the carnitas were tender and well seasoned. They also had a mango hot sauce brought to the table in a bottle that is amazing. I drenched my bowl with the sauce for the extra kick and flavor. The bowls are very filling. We ended up boxing up half of our food to bring home and finish for a late dinner. Would definitely come again and try their hot sandwiches. Will have to look into whether they sell their mango hot sauce separately as well. I'd buy a bottle!

I have had some meals at the bar where the bartenders were genuinely engaged knowledgeable and happy to walk you through their agave list which only enhances the whole experience. I will be honest and say that the service can sometimes lean into the typical Portland vibe of aloof and uninterested but there have also been moments especially at the bar where the staff really shines and makes you feel welcome and taken care of.
