WARNING!!! Possible crime does not make up for good food! BE AWARE of the bartender and your valuables!
We were happily enjoying some drinks while chatting to the bartender the bartender while waiting for our table. When we were advised that our table was ready and to notify the rest of our group, our dad turned away from his phone for a split second on the table to tell everyone else. When he turned back, he saw a hand quickly dart away back towards from the bar where his phone had been seconds ago. He immediately asked "wait, where's my phone?" The bartender was the only person standing nearby and claimed he saw nothing, shrugged his shoulders, and walked away to ask his coworker a question in Spanish. Then, returned to pull his own phone out of his pocket and say it was not him.
While we don't have video evidence to prove this, my dad knows exactly what he saw and we believe there is a strong probability that there is some sort of inside job with the bartender and possibly other staff who distract you at the bar before stealing your valuables and then disappearing to the back of the restaurant to hand off the items before returning to the bar and claiming they had to do something in the kitchen. This makes for a perfect alibi because if they get caught, they can say they were just moving your item to make space for drinks/tapas. This is honestly quite a smart scheme because staff know that you can't do anything to report it or prove anything, especially when it's not in your first language as a foreigner; you have no way of getting help. You think it's someone who was leaving the bar and start panicking, rarely thinking that it could have been someone who worked there :(
After frantic searching, we eventually accepted the loss as "risk of travelling in Europe" and sat down to eat. Unfortunately, this incident completely ruined our experience and made it difficult to enjoy the evening while having to worry about our wellbeing. At the end of the night, we talked to the manager to explain our situation and he seemed to be apologetic and said he understood. He then brought the bartender over to hear from him, but for some reason, the bartender strangely "no longer spoke English" anymore even after we had been chatting with him at the bar earlier over drinks. However, the bartender never denied it any point, simply told his alibi in Spanish with an innocent face pasted on, then left after 2 minutes. The manager is currently planning to talk with the owner and the bartender and will call us tomorrow. While the manager claimed this has never happened before, interestingly enough, one of the the other staff said this happens there all the time: "see, take, go" were his exact words. We hope our dad's phone "magically turns up" tomorrow after accidentally "falling behind the bar" because we would be very disappointed if this "accident" ruined our entire experience in Spain.
While the food was good, we would definitely recommend going elsewhere where you don't have to constantly worry about potential thieves who work inside the restaurant and are supposed to be there to help you enjoy the experience. It's hard to prove because the phone is long gone, but please keep your guard up if you do choose to eat here. We genuinely hope to get a call tomorrow saying that they "miraculously found" the phone and it was an "honest mistake" so we can edit this review, but we are also not holding out hope because we are not that naive. We just want to make sure that this doesn't happen to anyone else if you come to El Sur! read more
