My family used to eat here when I was a child and I loved it. I have continued to go because of nostalgia. However the quality of the food has really gone down. The management is not good and instead of addressing problems (like dirty dishes etc) they just get defensive and rude. 2.5 stars but I'll go 3. I've dined here a couple times because one of my coworkers is a fan. Chips and salsa were actually not bad. No heat in the salsa but the flavor was fine. I went with a chile relleno this last visit. It was ok, nothing special but it filled me up. The worst thing here is the rice. It seems to be cooked al dente then mixed with tomato paste and spices. The service was wonderful. It had to be that way to make up for the food! The salsa was tomato sauce with chili powder and lots of salt. The chips were packaged chips. We got all the broken ones at the bottom of the bag The guacamole was fresh and disgusting I've never scooped off guacamole in my life. But this was Salt and something bitter. I couldn't figure out what was mixed with the Avocado. I will give them a 5 for the chili verde. It was fantastic. We won't be going back. The restaurant is dark and gloomy. You could stretch out the bad boi long enough to wrap around the earth three times and still have enough to tie yourself a nice bow tie with it. Had a very early dinner of a cheese enchilada and a Baja fish taco. Very disappointing. The enchilada was ok, but the fish taco was a little fish, a LOT of lettuce, a smidgen of red cabbage and NO Baja sauce or sauce of any kind. At least the flour taco shell was grilled nicely. First time visit to this place. Interior is fairly typical for a Mexican restaurant. They did a great job with disinfecting between customers. Servers were super friendly and on top of things. Lots of regulars here that like to talk loud enough for the whole restaurant to participate and the server helped them out. Received chips and a salsa. The salsa was like tomato sauce with a slightly hot chili added to it. Menu was fairly small with nothing really available as a low carb option. I got chicken fajitas. It came out on a sizzling plate with a smaller portion than I normally get at other restaurants. The chicken was good and the seasoning fine, and there were green peppers and onions with it. The onions were minuscule and over cooked the peppers were fine. Corn tortillas were not given as an option. Flour tortillas were wrapped in foil and hot but had a crusty endive on all of them. Overall food was just okay, service was great, and cleanliness good. I probably wouldn't come here again because there are better options. read more

My wife remembered this place fondly from the 80s so we thought we would give it a go... the Formica Decore with purple and yellow paint was less than inviting. The air was filled with the aroma of lard grilling on an open flame. Luckily they had a simple choice of cheese enchiladas and rice and beans. I hastily chose this option after having to walk through the kitchen to wash my hands... the kitchen is a food crime scene waiting to be the showcase of a reality tv show. I asked if the Sopapias were good and the waitress I swear looked at me like I was an effing idiot. This is a two star restaurant after all. She graciously offered that they "were popular here". I couldn't have been more impressed with her skill in answering. The food is served on a hot plate but still tasted only warm. The cheese enchilada was actually rather tasty. The beans clumpy and forgettable, the rice was like sticky rice with spanish seasoning. The fried ice cream was the best. I didn't mind the salsa as it was purée style and pretty tasty, the chips were warm and crunchy. Overall I would give the food 3-4 stars as the taste and price were pretty reasonable. However, ambiance, comfort level, staffing, exposed kitchen, tables needing bused was all just too much for me... have to say that 2 stars feels about right. So proud of those young waitresses over worked, underpaid and tired of serving in a mess of a restaurant. read more

The server brought them out the rice looked like boxed rice and the beans were meh. My sister ordered the special that was CHEESE enchiladas. As she was eating she tasted something funny. She started to look into what was her enchiladas and there was mold. Like GROSS! My other sister had a chicken chimichanga and I have no idea what was on her plate when it came out. There's many types of Mexican Food in this great country. Some of those regional flavors are Fresh-Mex, Tex-Mex, New Mexican just to name a few. I personally would like to propose an additional type of Mexican cuisine... Ute-Mex. Its Mexican food plagued with otherwise standard Mexican food ingredients combined into a remarkably uninspired plate of Mexibland Ute-Mex. And to kick off this new regional Ute-Mex cuisine, I'd change El Sol's food category to Ute-Mex. I very reluctantly am giving the restaurant 3 stars. I feel like it was a very 2.5 type of experience. The service was exceptional, the server was polite/attentive, the drink was kept full and the food was delivered fast and her performance is the only reason I'm not giving 2 stars. I ordered the Chimichanga because it seemed to be recommended. I'm no stranger to a good Chimi, this one was half hearted at best. It was filled with ground beef, there were shredded chicken and beef options for 2 or so dollars more. In retrospect, I should have opted for the shredded beef. The size of Chimi was good, not terribly thick full of meat but there was a good enough amount figuring you also get rice and beans. My biggest complaint and surprise was it being topped with a load of straight from the tub sour cream. Not a sour cream sauce you often find in Mexican cuisine, but just straight dolups of sour cream. Then they tossed some shredded cheese on top. I hope I either wasn't offered or just didn't read that there was other options. If not, El Sol needs to shop around and find some actual sauces to top their Chimi's with. You are also served rice and beans with the meal. I picked re-fried beans and I appreciate they serve the re-fried variety. So many places only do black and pinto. It was a touch of Tex-Mex in Utah where they often try to Fresh-Mex it up too much. The rice was very bland, it tasted positively generic. There's better Mexican Rice from Rice a Roni at the grocery store. The chips were thick and from a bag, the salsa had good spice but tasted bad and had the thick consistency of ketchup. I seriously have never seen salsa that looked like this. They could serve Pace Picante and get a better reaction from me. But it was the spiciest thing I tasted at the restaurant. I want to be very straight forward in closing this review. There is NOTHING wrong or substandard about the ingredients that are being used, its the final product. Its just bland and uninspiring. By retooling some items with something as simple as a better sauce and a little actual Mexican spices you could really zest up the dishes. The service is great and I would go there again if service was the only item to review. El Sol is number one on my list of Ute-Mex restaurants, for better or worse. read more

I grew up in Logan, and as a result I've always known about El Sol, seen it, drove by it, and eaten there a handful of times. I've since moved away, and came back, and then moved away again. On our last visit we stopped by there, as we wanted to have some "Logan food". I lived in Arizona for 5 years where I developed an affection for Mexican food, which does make me a bit picky about it. After being seated, we got our chips and a red liquid we now call "Salt-sa" as it tasted like a very salty, watered down ketchup. It was really repulsive, not salsa at all. The servers there didn't seem interested in serving us at all, they all acted like doing their job was some enormous interruption in their very busy schedule or something. I don't specifically recall what we ordered, as it was some time ago, but what I do recall is that the food was of about he lowest quality I've ever had, and that's saying something. Meat which distinctly tasted like it came out of a can, nearly flavorless rice that appeared to have been sitting for some time. Refried beans that were most definitely canned, sauces and toppings that were either old or missed the mark on flavor. What I can tell you is that everything we got was smothered in nasty, low grade, greasy cheese, and believe me I like cheese, but this was horrific like the swamp thing of cheese on your plate. A plate which spent some amount of time in a nuclear reactor, I bet if you turned the light off it would glow, heaven forbid you bring tiny children in there, they could be seared by one of those plates. I honestly think you can score better Mexican food at fast food joints, or the "Open 24 hours" Mom and Pop Mexican food shop down the street, and this fact in and of itself is really sad. I may look back on Logan nostalgically and even hope to live there again some day, but I do not miss El Sol, and won't be going there again. read more

This place was recommended to my family by a friend. It wasn't anything special. We came here at about 4:30 on a Saturday evening. It was only about a minute before they had set up a table for our party of 8. They were prompt and our server, Shelby, was very friendly and attentive. I ordered a chicken quesadilla that wasn't super amazing. The rice and beans were crusty and not even warm. The quesadilla was absolutely filled with cheese. And not some super yummy blend of cheeses. It was just thick, gooey cheese that almost made me panic every bite I took because I felt like I was going to choke. Little did I know an enchilada didn't have to be filled with stringy, unseasoned, dry chicken or beef, topped with nasty sauce and cheap, greasy cheese. That is all you get here. This place is stuck in a time warp back to 30 years ago. Nothing here tastes fresh. Everything they cook is bland. Unfortunately, this was easily the MOST woefully prepared food I have ever tried to eat. Ordered fish tacos.... I'm not picky at all. Fish reeked of age and was over cabbaged. Rice undercooked, beans over salted. Highlight was the speed at which the bill was delivered. A cheap lesson for me being a new person in town. I'm going to count it as sunk cost for education and move in to the Cafe Rio down the street which for comparable pricing is better in every way.
