We starving and street a couple failed attempts to find a place to eat that didn't require at least an hour wait. We tried this place out, and let me tell you third time is truly a charm. When you walk in you see the decor is bright and cheery and it smelled clean. It's family owned and the food came out piping hot. No heat lamps here. We ordered: chicken enchiladas with green sauce, chilaquiles with green sauce, el pastor wet burrito and i got the 3 tacos plate. While we waited we enjoyed their house made chips and salsa, you can really tell how good a place is by how good their salsa is. Theirs was spicy, chunky and it had a fruity note to it. Something I've never experienced and i loved it. My tacos (carnitas, el pastor and carne asada) were seasoned perfectly and each had their own unique salsas and they are not shy about the spice. I wanted to eat caldo de pollo so popped in with one of my kids on a weekday afternoon for lunch. The waitress, I think she said her name was Fatima, was so attentive and friendly. When she asked me if I wanted corn or flour tortillas, I didn't expect that my tortillas were going to be homemade! DELICIOUS! The broth was obviously homemade and it was sooo good! Some places leave their veggies so big that you need a knife to eat your soup and I get that's a normal thing. The veggies and chicken here were big, but not too big, and the chicken was so tender and flavorful! Of course, they brought out the onions, cilantro, rice, and limes with my bowl. The chips were okay, but the salsa was incredible. We also ordered taquitos and they were homemade and had a good amount of meat. Been to Old Town Placentia numerous times for Golden State Coffee Roasters (GSCR) and for El Farolito (down the street on S. Bradford Ave), but never had the chance to try El Sabroso Grill until I was in the neighborhood recently for a few cups of Joes from GSCR. There was a chalkboard out in front with the specials, but did not know the specials were only for dine-in, which was fine. I ordered a Pozole to-go and watched the news on the TV while my order was being prepared. There were a few occupied tables and everything looked and smelled delicious! Pozole Pork stew with hominy It was a pretty good amount of food and 2 fresh tortillas were included as well. Everything was packaged well and all made it safely home, without a spill in the bag. Loved the interior and the ambiance of the restaurant. There are many tables for its customers. Very roomy and feels homey. Prices, portions, and quality of food are all very reasonable. Thursday night in Downtown Placentia 8:22pm. Place is a ghost town. Maybe it's because we're close to closing time at 9pm. Owner/cook is just chillin watching Swamp people on the TV. Ok. He greets us and says we can sit anywhere we like. We're greeted by the waitress, our order was taken and we were given some excellent salsa and chips. My wife and I order carne asada fries, 2 birria tacos, 2 tacos de pollo and one quesadilla. The portions on carne asada fries were huge! But the fries were dry and somewhat rubbery. Don't know if the fries were cooked long enough. Good flavor though. Quesadilla was a significant size, but lacked flavor. Yes, a quesadilla is just tortilla and cheese but it makes a difference on what type of cheese is used. The tacos, (birria) had good flavor profile and looked carefully manicured. Portions were a bit on the small side for the price. ($1.65 for the basic tortilla and $2.25 for hand made tortilla). I guess I'm just used to the normal overstuffed tacos with the meat, cilantro and onions hanging over the side of the tortilla. All in all it's fair. Maybe we need to come at a different time instead of 30-40 min before closing time. Wouldn't go out of my way to make it here, but if I'm in the area I might give it a try again. read more

I ordered the taquitos and they had a good flavor we also ordered a queso fundido and as I was getting to the bottom I put a fork of cheese in my mouth and there it was a silver hair! I told the waitress and she took it off our check but charged us 2.00 extra dollar by accident. Well that was the tip. Would we go back idk yet but I wouldn't order the queso again lol. Saw El Sabrosos on DD and D and decided to try it to go. We tried the chicken tamales, chili replenished with shrimp and deluxe carne asada nachos. All the food was terrific and the chili rellenos is the best I've ever had. Stuffed with cheese, very light batter and we added shrimp with their house sauce on top. The chicken tamale had the perfect balance of masa and chicken with a good sauce on top. My daughter ordered carne asada nachos and it was huge. She commented that it had a ton of meat on every bite. It is FANTASTIC. On my first visit, I tried the cocido which came w/ a side of 3 of these soft tasty pancakes. I offered 1 to my buddy who used it to wrap around his soft tacos - his own version of gorditos. While I wasn't paying attention, he swiped my last one. Fortunately, they happily gave us more. I'd come back just for these. As for the cocido, it had great flavor and filled to the brim of a big bowl with tender beef and vegetables. The chip & salsa was also great.
