I am so satisfied with my experience. This is a really fun Mexican style place. The colors are bright the decor is interesting and lively. The wait staff was very polite attentive and quick. The food was delicious. The manager at our hotel recommended this place to us and we are very grateful for it. The food was hot came out quickly and was more than filling. I had the Pepes combo which was well priced and very filling. We also had tacos and a burrito. The only things that I did not love about this place are that they charged for a second serving of chips and salsa which is some thing I'm not used to and if they would serve half portions of rice and instead serve beans. Those are kind of picky things things however and overall everything was wonderful. read more

I was pretty disappointed with this restaurant. I was really looking forward to finding a great Mexican Restaurant, but this one let me down. The hostess and some of the other staff were sitting at a back table on their phones and laptops so it took a little bit to be seated. The hostess did not seem happy to be working at all. She barely spoke to us. The Eagles game was playing so I can't really blame everyone for being distracted but it seemed like a lot of the staff were just watching the game. Our waiter barely talked to us as well. We did get the chips, salsa and our drinks pretty quick which was nice. I did enjoy their salsa a lot, it had a little spice to it but it wasn't overwhelming. It took a bit to get our food. My tortilla for my meal was just a little tough/hard on outside. Our waiter really didn't come by at all. For the price you would have thought the portions would have been a little bigger. I'll be on the outlook out for another Mexican restaurant that I can try out. read more

I unfortunately haven't had good experiences here. The first times I came here, food was not the best quality. I understand I can't expect authentic mexican flavors but the quality of the ingredients can be better. Today I had big cravings for Mexican food so I gave it a try. To my surprise food tasted better than past times but I speak English/Spanish and it was so sad and upsetting how the waitresses where having this conversation with an American client who didn't speak Spanish and all the time they will cursing in Spanish about things he was saying. First they are working, so this behavior is unacceptable and second the rest of the clients also deserve respect while dinning there. Short story I would not recommend this place. read more

This is my very first written review ever! As a neighboring customer and have always enjoyed our meals here, I must say last night was our WORST food service ever! The hostess barely acknowledged us, threw menus on table and walked away. The Waiter was prompt and pleasant for the moment we saw him! Order taken, drinks, guacamole dip delivered partners meal delivered within 5-6 minutes(by a runner). The End ! Never got my meal and couldn't even get the attention of any staff. After 10 minutes finally stood, explained our concern and canceled the remaining order. At that time they looked at us as if we were from Mars! Asked for our check and politely left. I went to this place with my sister and her 2 children. The place was doing a good amount of business when we walked in, and I was hopeful, as I love Mexican food. We were seated, and after about 10 minutes our flustered server came over to take our order. Before she was able to run off, I asked for chips, salsa, and some lime wedges. We got chip crumbs, murky salsa, and dried limes. Hoping the meal would be better, we were disappointed again, as we were served our lukewarm meals sans the black beans we asked for. We flagged the server, and asked for the beans which she promptly brought back. However, it was clear that they came directly from the can, no salt, pork-belly or spice added and not heated...flavorless! We asked for the check, and noticed that there was 20% gratuity included. Being a Bartender/Server myself, I found this very odd, as there were only 4 of us at the table, and 2 were children under 10. I asked the table behind me if there was gratuity added on there check, and they said "no". Being a fan of Scooby Doo, The Three Investigators, and The Hardy Boys, I decided to get to the bottom of this plot which was definitely thickening. I asked the Manager at the cash register why it was added, and he said "Because the computer randomly adds it to checks". I was flabbergasted! I told him to "remove the gratuity immediately, and it was clear that they were up to no good, which was comparable to the quality of the food which is only marginally authentic. We didn't ask for anything to be taken off the bill which clearly should have been comped, and he assumed that we would be bad tippers, which is why they added it, hoping it would slip by our eyes." He did remove the gratuity, and the black beans. We paid, tipped and left. I will NEVER return to that joke of a restaurant. It appears that customer service has gone the way of the Dodo Bird, particularly in this "Mexikitsch" eatery. You would do well to steer clear of this "Ol' Rodeo". read more

I'm afraid I must dissent from my friend Jason E.'s review. El Rodeo may not be authentic, but what they are is reliably satisfying. Service has almost invariably been *very* fast every time we've been. They make a good impression at the outset by serving fresh hot homemade tortilla chips and homemade salsa (heavy on the cilantro, thank goodness!) as soon as you sit down. The menu is conventional but lengthy, with pretty much every variation on the meat-tortilla-beans-lettuce-tomato-cheese theme one expects at an American Mexican restaurant. A lot of restaurants lose points for focusing on the entre and serving bland, generic sides; not El Rodeo. They stand out by serving genuinely tasty refried beans and seasoned rice with their dishes. I will refrain from speculating on the caloric cost incurred by El Rodeo's consistently good soul food. It's probably safe to assume that this is not the best place to go if you're on a diet. But for a fast, satisfying family meal in central York, you could do far worse. read more

I agree with the reviewer that said that El Rodeo doesn't make a very good chile rellenos. Try El Serrano off of Market Street for more authentic Mexican food. But for cheap American Mexican eats, El Rodeo can't be beat. Any of their combinations provide a massive amount of tasty, cheesy goodness that can be washed down by a pitcher of Dos Equis. I especially like their tamales. The beans are also very good, and not the throw-away that you sometimes find at Mexican restaurants. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, most of their lunch specials go for $4.20. You can't beat that! I get a beef chimichanga for lunch, eat half, and get another meal out of it for under five bucks. Sometimes it can feel like the waitstaff is ignoring you, but if you have a little patience, most of them are pretty nice. Overall, an extensive menu full of tasty, cheap treats. 3.581 stars I've seen this movie before, I swear I have and that tune playing during the credits too! Been to mini-Mexican chains like this in the Northeast, Mason Dixon land and the Southeast. They cater to the gringos, like me, and those not like me. El Rodeo is more authentic than most food-wise although the bulk of the menu is heavily Americanized. The prices are quite decent and you can feed the family here for poco dollars and be quite full while getting your drink on. They have public service signs in Spanish and English that indicate if you dont' drink responsibly they will cut you off, or words to that effect. The room is large with cozy booths and tables. It gets crowded on weekends and you can wait at the bar(if you can find a seat) or on a bench. The bar is good spot if you are just two and you don't mind the traffic from the kitchen. They were playing (sat or cable feed?) Mexican music that wasn't quite Narcocorrido yet also not Mariachi with a healthy dose of Mex-Cowboy/Country. It had a good beat and you could stuff your face to it. The chips and salsa were thin crisp chips that might have been made on site, they tasted "muy fresco", and the salsa had a decent kick-in-the-pants, the guacamole side we ordered was less impressive, a bit bland. The chile rellenos appetizer/side was a bit heavy but it lasted only seconds. The Enchiladas Verdes was a also a bit heavy but I enjoyed it. The offspring ordered a dish that can only be described as Mexican "Chicken Parm" or Pollo Chilango, a new dish to me, again on the heavy side but he thoroughly enjoyed it. The stock Margaritas are sweet mix and a bit watered down (see disclaimer above), they also have a great selection of Mexican beers, not just the usual suspects. The service was friendly and speedy, we went before 7pm on a Saturday night it was at about 90% capacity and waited less than 15 minutes to be seated. *parking lot is big but tight watch yourself backing out. *NEMF not exactly mexican food but it'll do in a pinch, especially in an area where there are mostly mega-chains. *I did taste the presence of lard in the food so that's a data point for authenticity. read more

I chose this place on the way home from church with my Wife and wasn't sure what I was in the mood for. We sat at a table in the middle of the restaurant. We have been coming to this location for years and the layout is pretty standard with the bar as you walk in with booths on either side and tables in the center down to the front which is stepped down and has a window view of the highway. We ordered a queso fundido and we're practically full when our order came - I ordered the guadalajara special and she had a combo platter. I was barely able to finish and was almost feeling a little discomfort since the portion sizes are large. I was trying to clean my plate and the food was tasty so... August, my wife did not finish and took half home for dinner so you definitely get a lot for what you pay. I feel as though the seating layout is slightly crowded at times base on how busy they get, but on a Sunday afternoon it wasn't too bad. The food is better than average and they have American food choices for those who aren't as adventurous. I have ordered steak, seafood, mole, fajitas and guacamole as well as fried ice cream and flan and it was all well made. Not necessarily the best there is but a high level of quality - the value is what you go to El Rodeo for. THE GOOD... -easy to park -seated promptly -chips were okay -veggie fajitas were okay -pretty inexpensive THE BAD... -fajita veggies did not come out sizzling -not enough fajita soft shells -no pico di gallo -was an extra charge for hot sauce -salsa with chips could have been better -had to ask twelve hot sauce -service overall was lacking and the restaurant was pretty dead Overall, this experience was sub par. I have eaten there since before 1997, and I love that place. I returned to PA to visit family and I ate there Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. This time was probably the only time I ever haven't been completely satisfied. I love there refried beans and chips. Both Friday and Saturday the chips seemed a bit well done for my taste. I got the Chicken Chimichanga dinner on Friday night, and A chicken soft taco with bean and chips for lunch. Both meals were awesome as always, and super cheap. When you sit down, they bring chips and salsa. The salsa is good, and has a little kick to it. This is the best Mexican food I have found in that area. What can I say. Great food at great prices. We were amazed at what we got for the money. Definitely an incredible deal for the money. The wait staff was really good. There was a bit of a language barrier as expected, and a bunch of communicating through head nods and hand signals, but he was attentive and right on time with everything. The only thing keeping this from five stars in my opinion is the size and acoustics. Right before we were seated, a group of 30 something women were seated for an obvious "Mommies Night Out." Although they were on the opposite side of the restaurant, they made it a point to let the whole restaurant know about little Timmy's preschool, the husband's promotion, upcoming trips to distant vacay points and the like with each one having to outdo the other in grandeur and volume. Tonight's service was quick and efficient. My friend had chicken quesadilla rellena was very flavorful with side of rice. The hubby and I had the chicken chimichanga which was fried just enough to be slightly crunchy. They were filled with shredded chicken topped with lettuce, tomato, and guacamole. Here late on the fifth of May. Had a reasonable 25 minute wait. It would have been nice to hit the bar while waiting but it is very small and was elbow to elbow. The decor was festive and the drink specials added to the celebration . I hope the Wall doesn't slow the flow of XX beer ! It was very good the especial lager complimented the chips and salsa, the salsa was not spicy but there was hot sauce on the table to amp the heat. Our server was in training and she needed some help understanding what I was asking for when I told her Pinot Grigio. A very grumpy manager came to our table with her and rudely asked "What do you want?" I told him and he said "that's a wine? No we don't have that. What do you want?" I asked for a water and he gave me a disgusted look. I ordered some a la carte items- an enchilada, a tamale, and Mexican rice. The rice arrived cold, the enchilada wasn't sauced enough, and the tamale was very good. Husband had Mexican pizza - pretty much a big tortilla with some meat and cheese on it. No real seasoning. The food was disappointing but the service was terrible- bartender sitting at the bar playing on his phone and 2 waitresses sitting at a table eating and on their phones between waiting on customers. We had a hankering for some Mexican food while on vacation in Pennsylvania and turned to yelp for some help. Based on the reviews we stopped at and rodeo in York on our way to Lancaster Pennsylvania. The decor is your traditional Mexican interior... Lots of bright colors and carved wooden toucans and sunflowers. Prices are reasonable, the waitress was friendly and the chips & salsa were delicious. I ordered the chile rellenos with rice and beans, and "G" went with the Chile Verde burrito. My chile rellenos were...meh..uneventful. They used Anaheim chilis vs the traditional Padilla, so I didn't fund them as flavorful either...but hey it was worth a try. *Side note... Who knew there was such a thing as white nacho cheese sauce and that you could use it in Mexican food...shrugs.* Anyways.. These cheesy babies garnered a 1 1/2 Noms on my three Nom rating scale. The accompanying beans were good and flavorful .. the rice was also good, I'd say better than most rice you'd find in a Mexican restaurant (I'm a total rice snob). Ok, now for the chile verde burrito.... "G" and i both agree that it was a solid 2 1/2 Noms. Had it had less lettuce and no sour cream it would've likely been a 3 Nomer. Who knew the folks in PA could do Mexican food like that... !Ay Caramba! Food is good. Service is so bad that I'll get the food to go next time. I ordered black beans, they brought refried beans covered with cheese. Cheese isn't on my vegan diet. The server dropped and ran, and I've not seen a server since. I'm out of water, salsa, and there's still that cheese issue. This El Rodeo is one of my favorite places to eat out, period. The staff is always polite and attentive, and I've never had a bad meal there. most of the menu is very authentic but they also offer some of the Ameri-Mex dishes with which most people are familiar. York is actually blessed with a number of quality Mexican restaurants but this one stand above. I recommend the Trio Tacos. One steak, one chicken, and one carnitas. The housemade hot sauce is great, it's got a bite without being too spicy. It's not the easiest location to get to for most people which is unfortunate, but worth the pain to go. Only complaint is their salsa isn't as good as it was when I first went. Still has a great taste but the original was chunky and had more cilantro. Check it out you won't be sorry. read more

El Rodeo has been my go to Mexican spot for a number of years and for good reason. It has reined as the supreme Mexican joint in York county since I moved here in 1998. It has been a fair and gentle ruler over the York County Mexican restaurant hierarchy. The food choices are endless. The decor is vibrant and authentic; hand-carved chairs and tables allow you to feel as if you're at a Mexican restaurant in Mexico City. The staff is always on the ball and presented neatly. The food I had for my last visit gave my tastebuds a thrill ride of epic proportions. I ordered the Trio Tacos and was utterly unprepared for the black magic they'd perform on my tastebuds. After each taco I thought to myself "That was the best taco I've ever had! " The tacos accented each other perfectly. Each one had a different type of meat concealed within its double wrapped tortia cover. After I'd finished them off I was in shock. It took me a full five minutes of Manderin Mexican soda sipping and complimentary chip munching to fully come around after the tender tri-affair. This the first 5 star review I've ever given.
