Oh my goodness. This restaurant is divine. We were walking in Mercado Latino and found this gem tucked into the back corner. They have a modest amount of in restaurant seating but a huge festively decorated patio with vibrantly colored folk art flowers adorning them and bistro style chairs. We dined early on a Friday and were treated to strolling musicians who played and sang a wonderful traditional folk song for us while we awaited our order. The waiter spoke limited English but that wasn't a problem as when my limited Spanish failed me we used Google translate with great success. The menu is large and varied with an assortment of dishes including molcajetes, tacos, burritos, fajitas, and much more. Our meal began with house made flour tortilla chips and a richly flavourful salsa with plenty of garlic and a spice balance that I the wuss was able to enjoy, but which builds in intensity so it worked well for my spice loving husband. We ordered pasta poblano con Pollo and a pescado cerviche Toscana plus iced tea. The pasta was beautifully presented and perfectly prepared with liberal lashings of a rich buttery creamy white cheese sauce infused with the bright taste of poblano peppers and moist chunks of well seasoned chicken. The cheese pull from it was remarkable and it is a rich savory flavor explosion on the tongue. The portion was enormous and ended up feeding both of us about three meals each. I ordered the pescado or fish cerviche Toscana made without chili as I am a wuss and they happily accommodated that request. When it arrived it was a literal mountain of cerviche atop a six inch toasted corn tostada with another tostada perched atop at a jaunty angle. The cerviche was close to four inches high! The fish was citrus cured with a light delicate texture and fresh clean taste speaking to the lime used in the curing. The salsa had fantastic balanced flavor and was without pepper heat which was perfect for me. The service was superb and friendly. We WILL be back! Update: We are back for more fabulous cerviche tostadas. My husband got the perillo tostada which has shrimp, sushi grade tuna, avocado and all manner of other goodies. Perillo translates to bad ass and it is indeed a bad ass tostada! I opted for the callo de acha or scallop tostada this time and it also does not dissapoint! They have a full bar and we are very curious about their Adios Madafaker cocktail. The name is hilarious! We will update again if we decide to try it. read more

This place is becoming my favorite place for Mariscos in Bakersfield. Does the $22 for $50 Groupon help? Sure! Is the food tasty, the service great, and most importantly, do my wife and kids like coming here to eat? They definitely do! During Lent, this is a place for us on Friday, and the service and is always friendly. If you read this and ever try it out, beware of the other restaurants in the plaza whom send servers about to invite you in to their place. When we walked in this time, one of the first things I noticed was that they had a notice of a suspended liquor license. I asked our server about it, and she said it was a minor infraction, and it would be reinstated in a week. I didn't plan on having a drink this time because I was performing in a school okay later in the evening, but my wife was jonesin for a mojito or flavored margarita (they make them all good here from previous visits). I split a deep fried Mojarra with my son, along with an a la carte chile relleno. My wife also got a fried mojarra that comes with rice and beans, and lots of veggies. My son didn't want rice, so they substituted it for fries at no extra cost. My daughter Ordered a shrimp tostada and a shrimp empenada. Overall, the food was delicious. Well Ive parked the truck for 4 days and am having a great time today at el puertero in the Mercado Latino, I had the molcajetes and my girl had enchiladas Del Mar. Portions are HUGE , and the food was delish. I'm mad at myself about not finding this place sooner, but I'm hooked. Sorry didn't take pics I just started chomping away so gooooooood. To be fair I deleted my five stars because of the lack of good service and inconsistent fajitas and steak dishes. This is the second time my Fajitas Supremas were badly burned. The beef was tough again and shrimp like rubber. I love cooked bell peppers with texture not with a charcoal tastes. The chips don't taste fresh, flavor of processed or bagged with canned salsa? I don't expect a ton but a $100 should bring joy, not regret. My first visit I ignored the service because the food was good. Second time the waitress again forgot to bring me my tortillas to enjoy with fajitas. The third time she never brought them. Service was sad, so hard to get the two waitresses attention(we were the only couple inside so there was no excuse for providing poor service.) I gave up trying. It wasn't a busy night for the Mercado,..so we had no trouble parking, and walked through the gate into a little slice of Old Mexico. A few little shops, and a few restaurants. Most of them were closing up for the night, or already closed. But we kept walking back, and found El Puerto. LOTS of outdoor seating, but it was pretty chilly, so we went inside. No, the waitress doesn't speak much English, but to me, that just means we're in the right place for Mexican food. My Mexican style sweet tea was very good. Not too sweet, with hints of lemon and lime. She also brought me a tall glass of ice water, which I really appreciate. My lady had Shrimp con Ajo, with extra Ajo, and she liked it a LOT. They didn't get stingy with the Ajo. I had a pair of seafood Rellenos. Wow! Mucho flavor! The one lady reviewing here that said the food was bland is from another planet or something. The rice was completely white, with no veggies of any kind mixed in, so I was thinking,..."OK, maybe this is the bland part." No, not at all. It must have been cooked in a broth instead of just water, because it was very tasty. Good beans, good salsa, great sauce on the Rellenos. Our lovely non-English speaking waitress was very attentive, always there to take care of us, and always with a smile. The owner came by at the end of our meal to see how things went, which is always appreciated. The chef could be heard from the kitchen, singing along with the music on the PA, which really makes me feel like we took a five minute drive and ended up in Mexico. We loved that part of it. It's located next to another restaurant that we mistakenly almost went to. Receiving the check was a little wait , but we weren't in a big Hurry anyhow. I recently purchased a groupon for his restaurant. We should have come here years ago. What a kick this restaurant and area is. There are lots of restaurants and shopping and live music and lots of outside seating. We were greeted outside by a very friendly employee and were immediately seated. We were drawn here by the the fact that's it's a Seafood Restaurant. The menu is in Spanish and English. I picked Enchiladas Del Mar and my husband picked the grilled shrimp dinner. They offered chips and dips before which were good. Our plates came out and they both looked beautiful. Everything was fresh and hot and delicious. My enchiladas were chunk full of seafood topped with Avocado and sour cream. The shrimp were split and grilled beautifully and the beans and rice were especially delicious. There is no skimping here. You will not leave here hungry. The service was also excellent. Next time we are going to sit outside and listen to all the live music. Today was so much fun along with excellent food. It took me two tries to find this place but I'm glad I tried that second time because this place is damn good for Mexican Seafood! I almost gave up on this place but so glad I didn't! It's in an outdoor Mart with the flare of being at a Mexican Resort Town all within our city limits! There are several restaurants there so remember, it's El Puerto for outstanding Mexican Seafood!!! I got 2 fish tacos that were both big and delicious!!! I also got a "to go" dinner to take Home; it was fish fillet, camarones (shrimp) and octopus! It was served over this incredible bed of delicious rice and tomatoes. The waitress really helped me by suggesting a fantastic dish. Was recommended this place by my mom. Took my husband out for his birthday & well honestly the service was alright they really didn't acknowledge us. My husband orders sopes & they were really big so the food was good for him, I ordered something else and it was good also. But again at the end barley acknowledged us & also she didn't ask if we were done eating or we would like the check so.. it got awkward at the end. Hands down the best restaurant at the Mercado Latino. The servers are always friendly and have no problem getting what you ask for. Most of them speak Spanish, but understand english. Very nice ladies. Weekends are definitely always busy with live music. I felt something on my leg and I thought it was my mama being annoying tickling me .... NO it was a COCKROACH crawling on me. So I hit it off and it lands by her and starts to crawl up her. We get it off and get out and move tables.... We had half our food left. The server asked what was wrong and we tell her a cockroach was crawling on us and she says"oh" and walks away. I really liked this place. It's a tad hard to find, hidden inside the market, but it was well worth it. Very traditional atmosphere, and the food was very good. I'd recommend the fish platter or the fish tacos, and definitely try the guacamole, it's freshly made, and thoroughly delicious. I loved the little tortilla container it came in. The margaritas were average, the beer was good, and the ambiance was authentic. Nothing fancy, but definitely fun. This is a place I'd happily go back to. read more

They have great food. It's small and has loud country sounding Mexican music playing. Obviously, it's a Mexican place, but it was just too loud for us, so we took it to go. I will say that the owner was friendly, offered us tortilla chips/salsa as waited. He ended up packing those to go, and they were good. I had the Suisa Enchiladas, first time for those kind. They're very good! I had leftovers. The restaurant itself is at the back end of a Mexican plaza area, but don't be put off by that. My son order a wet burrito and he couldn't stop eating it. My brother got a Mar y Tierra Don Juan he enjoyed it very much it had jumbo shrimp and a steak with fries, onions, white rice and salad. My mom ate 3 sopes of Carne asada she said it was good, she only ate one because she said there were too big to me they were normal size. I got a ceviche shrimp tostada and it was delicious and a filete y camarón a la plancha and it was awesome. During our meal my brother spilled his cold water and everything fall on me. Immediately the waitress came to us and gave me a towel to dry myself and before we knew there were 3 people helping us, one cleaning the table and one giving me towels and the other mopping the floor. My brother kept apologizing and one lady said " No te preocupes aquí no paso nada todo esta bien " ( don't worry, nothing happened here, everything is okay) her voice was so calm that I calm down. We continued to eat and we ordered flan. I've tried many flans but only few people know how to do it. Their flan brought me back yummy childhood it tasted the same as when my mom used to do it for us. It's far the best flan I ever tried and when we got our bill we were surprised that only costed $3 dollars in the Bay Area that would cost me approximately $8-$10 dollars. We had went to Camelot park prior to dinner. When we got in at 9pm, el puerto already had started packing up for the nights. Some tables already had chairs stacked on top. But the owner was gracious enough to accept us. The service was great throughout the whole experience. We never felt any rush or pressure from the waiters, and they were all very friendly. The food was as great as the service. We ordered the mar y Tierra with a couple of sopes, papas Fritas, and empanadas. Everything was delicious and tasted better than the pictures on the menu! If you are a groupon user like me, there is a steal of a groupon available right now. 25 dollars of food for just 10 bucks!!! My Nephew and I had Dinner there 8-11-17 last night and it was fantastic, he had the Steak picado burrito and I tried a taste it's was excellent he also loved it , I had the Chile Verde enchiladas also excellent, I'm here from Arizona for a pipeline project and always in my travels like to eat out at mom and pop places verse any chain restaurants. This place is in the Barrio and reminded me of being in Mexico, you can eat outside and last night in the courtyard they had live Mexican music going on . Great experience, very reasonably priced and the service was fine . The inside of the restaurant wasn't real fancy but was clean the food was excellent and definitely will go back. Most of the best places I have eaten are not the newest looking restaurants in town !! Excellent FOOD , they have a lot of seafood dishes and that's what I'll try next time . well i will be honest with my review. place look very decent, authentic mexican place. Almost full bar, lots of tequilas. went with the family and some relatives. rainy day, i believe they have live music not sure. but they had a lady singing inside the restaurant. anyway, the food. I had a shrimp tostada. not what I expected. long strips of purple onion as a layer. the shrimp was whole like a 31-40 size, very soft(old) and taste less.the shrimp was served whole. at seem that they had it sitting in cold water. it was topped with 2 wedges of very thin avocado. I also had a octupus tostada, same thing. taste less. At least I knew that the tostada was fresh cause it was very crunchy. luckly they had salt on the table but not hot sause I had to ask for it. my wife had the flautas plate, the flautas were made of chicken but very dry inside. served with rice and beans and sour cream. not so tasty at all. my friend next to me had a talapia fillet....very dry served with rice and beans nothing alse. lame plate. I can go on with all the reviews of my party and they were not good. I have to mention that the prices were ok but I felt like If i paid too much for this food. The chips could use an upgrade. The round chips seem out of the bag but the salsa is robust and tasty. We tried the typical shaken margarita and a strawberry blended margarita. Both were good. The strawberry drink came with whipped cream. We ordered butterflied shrimp in garlic and shrimp soup. The soup was too spicy for my mother (not for me) and was loaded with two sizes of shrimp. More than enough to bring home for another meal. The butterflied shrimp came with refried beans, white rice and a little cucumber and lettuce. Shrimp had excellent flavor and there were also plenty to eat and bring home. Fortunately you won't find just the typical cheesy and saucy dishes. I plan on returning to try other dishes. Due to a misunderstanding, we were delivered a dish with bell peppers but it was quickly remedied with the correct one. Sitting outside on the patio was nice. Chairs are metal without cushions but there are extra chairs with cushions for those in need. Dining at El Puerto is like stepping into Old Mexico. The ambiance of the latino mercado with its mariachis an small stores scattered about adds to the overall experience of eating here. Everything on the menu is delicious and reasonably priced. Service is usually very good, but can be spotty.
