My first visit to Simpatico while traveling for work was disappointing. I went because of the…read morestellar rating on Yelp. I was alone and chose to dine at the bar. The bar area is a handsome space, and I was surprised to see that there were barely a handful of people dining. It was a Tuesday night, however. I ordered a cosmopolitan and asked for Cointreau instead of triple sec, but they didn't have any. The cocktail was fine nonetheless. I started with the agrodolce and Parmesan Brussels sprouts. They were fried until almost burned and were very greasy. The bartender graciously took them back and returned with another order. They were less burnt and greasy, and I ate them all, but they weren't great. For my entrée, I ordered chicken Marsala with fettuccine. The menu says that all pastas are homemade. The pasta and mushrooms looked beautiful and were cooked perfectly. The chicken was overcooked, but just barely, unfortunately. The entrée had almost no flavor. The pasta was tasteless, along with the mushrooms and chicken. The rich, silky Marsala sauce you'd expect was absent. I asked the bartender for salt and pepper, which he provided, and that did make a big difference in the flavor profile. I ate everything on the plate, and the food was satisfying, but it was mostly unremarkable. I enjoyed a delicious John Sloat Cabernet Sauvignon offered by the glass. The tiramisu I enjoyed for dessert was the best part of the meal. It was delicious and everything you'd expect. The bartender was exceptionally professional and gracious throughout my dining experience; it appeared to me that he's an asset to this business. On my next return trip here for work, I'll look to dine elsewhere. The food warrants 2 stars and the service warrants 5 stars. It's too bad, this is a great location, a handsome space, and a great bar.

My First Five-Star Mix-Up…read more This might just be the first time I've ever given a 5-star review for an order that wasn't quite right. I placed a delivery order--two pies for our big family of eight--and only one showed up. Eight hungry people, one lonely pizza. You can imagine the scene. When I called, the mystery unraveled: another gentleman with my same name had stopped in, and walked out with a two-pizza order meant for us... without saying a word! Once the mix-up came to light, the owner herself, Janis, personally fired up the oven and baked not one but two fresh, perfect pies--then topped off the order with her homemade tiramisu to sweeten the evening. Sure, we had to wait an extra 30 minutes, and yes, the kids were getting restless. But the moment that tiramisu hit the table, all was forgiven. The pizza? A stellar rendition of the classic thin New York pie: a sauce that's sweet yet bold, cheese in perfect proportion, and that crispy "undercarriage" (shoutout to Dave Portnoy) that makes for an ideal bite every time. At first, I thought this might be our first and last order from DaVinci's. But after experiencing the warmth and integrity of this family-owned business--and seeing them go above and beyond to make it right--I'm all in for Janis and her family making it big here in the Lehigh Valley.

Strictly a Cheesesteak Review:…read more Absolutely sensational cheesesteak from Davinci's Pizzeria in Whitehall. The meat was cooked and seasoned to perfection. The house sliced Cooper Cheese was generously applied, as well as perfectly fried onions. The sandwich came together in Harmony on a seeded Liscio's Bakery submarine roll. You may have it toasted, which I believe is their standard or untoasted. I asked for an untoasted roll, and it was fresh as can be. Janis, who runs the show here, was an absolute delight! She answered a few questions I had with integrity and a smile. We talked about Allentown's 6th Ward and we know some of the same people. She provided me a sample of their house made fries and house dipping sauce. The dipping sauce recipe wasn't divulged, and for good reason! The fries are cut similar to a Frito Scoop, which is great for the dipping sauce! The cheesesteak was well above average, in my opinion. This steak is in the discussion for me with the elite shops in the area. The top photo is fresh at the shop. Bottom photo is after is was wrapped and brought home. I highly recommend Davinci's. I look forward to hearing other experiences. #rushieeats

It's open Wednesday through Saturday from 4:00 PM to 2:00 AM and Sunday from 4:00 PM to 12:00 AM. My friend and I made our first visit early Friday evening. The service was good, and the food more than lived up to expectations. We started with tender, well-seasoned beef skewers, crispy buffalo wings over blue cheese, and perfectly cooked roasted cauliflower paired with a tasty tzatziki sauce and pickled onion. For my entree, I ordered the maple-glazed short rib. It was incredibly tender, practically melting in my mouth, and came with creamy sweet potato puree and roasted shallots. My friend ordered the rich, deeply flavorful bolognese. Although she received the small plate portion rather than the entree, it wasn't a major issue as we had more than enough food. There are still many items on the menu I'd like to try, and after such a strong first visit, I'll most certainly be back.

If there is one good thing that the pandemic has brought, it's that grocery store chains have upped…read moretheir delivery and pick up games. When these things work, they can be big time savers just like when they don't, it makes you ask why even offer it? Sadly, Aldi seems to fall into the latter. While I really want to like the Aldi curbside pickup concept, it's got two major flaws. 1. Not all locations offer it. This Aldi location is not that close to me but the two locations that are closer (Bethlehem & Allentown) do not offer curbside. 2. A real biggie is that what Aldi allows you to place an order for on the website has zero resemblance to what is actually in the store/will get picked for your order. I.E. = My most recent pickup order was for 62 things. Out of that, 16 were unavailable and 12 got substituted for things that in all cases were higher priced and a few of those are not really substitutions that I think are realistically applicable. Subbing Blueberry Bagels for Blueberry Muffins is an interesting stretch. Pandemic/Shmandemic. I place curbside orders frequently with Giant and this problem does not exist with them. Sure they may be out of one thing or they may have the item you want just in a different size whereas with Aldi, my phone blows up with notification texts as the employee goes through the order subbing and refunding the unavailable items. At the end of the day Aldi is never going to be a singular grocery shopping experience for anyone. It can't be because their inventory footprint is too small to make that viable. But at the same time, if you're going to offer a service like curbside, you need to be able to make a more realistic go at linking actual store inventory to what the website is showing as available for ordering. It can't be such a shot in the dark.
