I have been eyeing this restaurant for sometime waiting for the opportunity to try and today was the day! Lovely family owned restaurant on a quiet off street in Bridgeport. Warm, clean and casual place away from the traffic and hustle of downtown. Our waiter was attentive and friendly. We ordered 3 empanadas to start: chicken, beef, and the El Pueblito, beans, rice, sweet plantains, pork rind. All were good, but really loved the El Puebilto. Coarse corn meal coating really accentuated all of the delicious fusion of flavors within. Super. 2 simple salads of iceberg lettuce, onions, shredded carrots started off the feast. Perfect. Next up was the Bandejita Vegetariana: rice, beans, 2 eggs, sweet fried plantains, avocado and corn cake. I was missing avocado, but did not even realize until later as this is a filling meal! Rice cooked perfectly, beans had nice flavor. My dining partner had a pork cutlet, beans, rice, sweet plantains, salad. Loved the seasoning and crunchiness of the cutlet. Generous portions at most reasonable prices. Relaxed, inviting restaurant which I recommend trying. read more

We having been going to el pueblito for years and decided to stop by today for breakfast which we haven't tried before and it was great! We had the Catlendo plate comes with scrambled eggs, rice and beans, plantains, grilled steak and an arepa. Everything was super fresh and portion was huge. My son had the kids plate of grilled chicken with rice and beans and he enjoyed it too. Space is limited now due to Covid but the service was pretty fast and the metered parking was free today which makes it an even better day Right outside of the restaurant is about six to eight metered spaces for parking They do take credit card and offer take out as well as delivery via Door Dash read more

Nondescript exterior (and interior) in a relatively safe section of Bridgeport. I was immediately upset that our server spoke NO ENGLISH, AND... we were told to seat ourselves, yet all of the table coverings (white paper) showed that these tables had been used but no clean paper was laid down for the next seating. I proceeded to flip the paper and that made it somewhat more appealing! Our waitress took our order (we tried our darnedest to pronounce everything correctly, and minimize our questions, all the while pointing to the items we wanted on the menu), and immediately brought our drinks (water and wine~ $6.95/glass. HUGE pour, delicious malbec!); our shrimp ceviche and empenada apps quickly followed. Tasty; our extra large shrimp were served with 4 large and perfectly crisp tostones which we appreciated, and the empenada was not like others we've had ~ very crispy exterior that did not resemble plain old pastry dough, and filling scant but quite tasty. Shortly after, our dinners arrived. My mixed grill platter was very well received, as was my husband's steak with special Colombian sauce and spices. Our sides were relatively bland (arepa, rice and beans, plain 1/4 avocado in shell) but eaten nonetheless. We had a LOT more food than we could eat at that sitting, so a "to go" container was provided and we enjoyed the leftovers the next day. The bill was $86 w/ tip included. I was in the area because of jury duty. I found this popular Columbian resteraunt near by and i had the Bandejita Montana. It was delicious and reasonably priced for lunch. It includes a rib eye, fried pork, rice, fried egg, avocado, flat corn, and bean soup. I washed it down with a a tall delicous drink called Guanabana. Guanabana (Soursop) is one of many natural juices they sell. The juices claim some nice health benefits and are like a thin healthy milk-sh shake. I really like it and will try their Mango, or Passion fruit drink next time to see how they taste. I would recommend that you get one of these drinks with your meal to really complete the experience. This place is not 4 Stars I repeat this is not 4 Stars. Do not fall for it like I did. I am always wary when a place is rated 4 stars and above with less than 50 reviews. I was in Bridgeport paying a traffic ticket. I saw the 4 stars and decided to stop in with my wife. We ordered empanadas which were good but that's where it ended. My wife ordered the carne asada, the food came it was literally burnt. I had the skirt steak. I asked for it medium. The steak was cooked all the way through. So dry it almost tasted like beef jerky. I specifically asked if it was a fatty cut of beef. Skirt steak is usually fairly lean. The only part of the skirt steak that wasn't charred was about half which was all fat. Now here is the kicker, anyone who knows about Latin food, I am part Puerto Rican, married to an Ecuadorian and lived in Miami for many years. Latin food is not expensive. Apparently the skirt steak was not on the lunch menu. All the lunch specials were under 10 dollars. The bill was almost $60.00. They charged me 24.95 for the skirt steak because it was not on the lunch menu. Stay away at all costs. read more

So I've been to El Pueblito many times, for lunch and dinner. The place is very nicely decorated and the staff is very pleasant. They greet you as soon as you come in and are attentive the entire time you are there. Lunch: Great choices and very reasonable prices. I get the mini Pechuga asada which comes with grilled chicken, rice, beans and plantains. ($8.95) Everything is so well seasoned and delicious! But make sure you order 15-20 ahead. Dinner: I had the pollo salteado once and I was not a fan. But the second time I came back I had the bandeja montañera and it was phenomenal. Came with chicken, steak, avocado, egg, rice, beans, fried pork....a little bit of everything. The only thing on my plate to Disappoint was the fried pork, It tasted old. Why did I give it 4 stars instead of 5? The pork piece I got that day (no good) and they charge for condiments! There's a really good sauce called Aji but you get charged extra for it. I don't think any formal restaurant should be charging extra for condiments. I do recommend it, but I would stick to the Colombian dishes. read more

I only gave four stars because the restaurant didn't have an active website -- it appears that they let their domain lapse. I'm a business traveler and eat at restaurants almost every day, and seeing a current menu usually helps me to decide where to eat. That being said, I did manage to find a menu on Foursquare, and since I was staying at the Holiday Inn and really didn't feel like taking the car out of the parking garage and driving somewhere, I gave El Pueblito a shot. One of the menus I found online showed something called "Bandeja El Pueblito," described as "Chicken, steak, fried pork, with rice, beans, avocado, sausage & eggs." "Bandeja" translates to "Tray" so I read it to be "Tray of meat with a few other things." Since it was one of those evenings where I was hungry but couldn't decide what I was hungry for, this intrigued me, and is what made me walk across the street to try this place. So I ordered "Bandeja El Pueblito" and, oh boy, it was a thing of beauty. I'm not sure where the avocado fit in, because it wasn't there, but there was a fried plantain, which was perfect. As was the variety of meat. Especially the pork... the skin was crispy and it had that fantastic layer of fat. The steak was, well, steak. It was good. The chicken was good, the sausage was really good, and the fried egg on top of the rice was a nice touch... I'll eat a fried egg on anything. What a difference a few months make! Sooo this review is gonna be a little off because I need to curse! I will say three things 1) If you only want your own, race, culture, creed, family, friends etc. in your establishment, then put up a sign so the rest of our dumb asses will know and not patronize you; 2) In a U.S. city (Bridgeport) where the population resembles that of Miami, you should do a f**in better job of not pissing off other Spanish customers (They will tell everyone)! 3) I should have re-read my prior review BEFORE I went there I went there last night for my daughter's 10th birthday. I gave her the choice of picking what and where she wanted to eat. She came up with like 100 options, she narrowed it down and then insisted on this place. I wanted to go to a restaurant in Milford. When we came in, at 7ish, there were only two other families in there. One with a child and one with two adults. The waiter was falling all over himself to help them and barely acknowledged we had walked in (BAMMMMPPPP! Mistake #1 (Announcer voice)). He seated us went to play with the family that had a child. Later, when he came to take our order, my daughter was trying really hard to order in Spanish (I neglected to mention that I am Latin American, but I am dark so most people think I am African American. I allow that in order to really see how my fellow Spanish folks will treat me because we are notoriously snobby to other races, and cultures). Anyway, as much as she was trying to order and pointing to what she wanted he kept looking at her like she was poo on the bottom of his fancy slippers. Eventually, I ordered for her (BAMMMMPPPP! Mistake #2). BTW the food is PRICEY!! He came back with our appetizers and food without much fanfare, which is fine but aggravated me because he was practically dancing with the people at the other tables. Fawning all over himself to accommodate whatever they wanted meanwhile we could barely get water. I had to keep asking for condiments because my food was dry and not very tasty. I ordered something very simple, the Saltado de Pollo, basically Spanish style chicken in onions, and tomatoes. The sauce wasn't very tasty at all! The only thing that was wet were my french friends because they came under the damn chicken...must have sopped up all of the "juice". I ended up using the sauce from our empanadas to try to jazz up my chicken. (I agree with Manny the empanadas had hard shells like coconut!). When we finally finished, I asked for menu to order dessert and my daughter (who apparently figured out this was not the place to be) started screaming no....no more. I thought that was hilarious! But I still asked him to bring the menu. He instead brought the check?! WTF? (BAMMMMPPPP! Mistake #3) I decided to pack whatever was left and take it home. I asked him for more of the empanada sauce to pour on my food and he says well we sell it for $3. I'm like no...I just want a little to go with the food I'm taking in the bag. He says well ok that'll be $.25. Are you Fookin kidding me? Who the hell charges for a damn house made sauce when you are still sitting in the restaurant? It wasn't something super special...I could have friggin made it myself, but this asshole was like you don't want the $3 one take the $.25....basically pay me more money than you already spent on my bland ass, overly priced fare. GTFOHWTBS (Ask me what that means if you are confused)!!! (BAMMMMPPPP! Mistake #4) WHOOOOWHOOOO we have a winner for all time BAD restaurant experiences. The asshole got no tip and I hightailed it out of there with my kids and went to Friendly's for dessert. BTW 1) While we were sitting there, another very brown (probably Indian) family came by and were turned away. They "apparently" closed at 8. Really? Then explain why another (fairer) family walked in 2 minutes later and were seated?! 2) A friend or family member walks in about 10 minutes before we leave and turns the tv up to a deafening level. He shattered the relatively peaceful atmosphere and didn't even acknowledge there were other people in the restaurant. He got comfortable like he was home and all the waiter did was shake his hands. The waitress was warm and attentive. $23 later we left with full bellies and empty plates. Unfortunately, 2 hrs later I got a call from my credit card company about a $400 on line charge. Now I can't say it's directly related to lunch. But I can say I have not used that credit card in over a week so it's unusual. I was hesitant to write a review for El Pueblito because I want to be honest, but I also really want it to be successful. First and foremost, you should know that El Pueblito is one of my two favorite places to get lunch in downtown Bridgeport. Their lunch menu is cheap with huge portions and some great, simple options. For example, you can order the very manly Bandejita Montanera -- which consists of large quantities of steak, fried pork, fried egg, beans, rice, avocado, plantains and corn -- for just $9 and be full for days. The mini arroz con pollo is very tasty, with large chunks of chicken embedded (not on top). The pork loin is fine but I'm less enthusiastic about the chicken breast, which is thin and dry. The side of beans are very flavorful, not a throwaway. Once you get off the lunch menu, it's riskier territory. There are some hits. I love the El Pueblito salad. It's gigantic with a sweet dressing and generous amounts of mango and apple slices. The tostones come in a tasty sauce. I've heard that the oxtail soup is amazing. There are some misses, which might just be specific to Colombian fare. Colombian ceviche is ketchupy and sweet; I really didn't like it. Colombian empanadas have thick and greasy cornmeal breading and bland fillings of smushed potatoes and tasteless ground beef. Not for me. And learn from my mistakes -- don't venture to order Peruvian items off the menu. The lomo saltado was dry and bland, so I am repressing my desire to try the chaufa. I think their low review is on me. I want El Pueblito to be more of an all-purpose South American restaurant, which is an unfair ask. So learn from me and stick to what they're good it -- straightforward but well-marinated slabs of meat with hearty sides at great lunch menu prices. read more

I was staying at the Holiday Inn and wanted to go somewhere beside the 'hotel' place. This place is right across the street if you go out the entrance on Wall St. The food was very good and service was fast and neat.
