Great authentic Mexican hole in the wall place that is a hidden gem! It is located right next to the prison so you won't find many people having the desire to go to this part of town for food. Rumor has it that people would sneak out of the penitentiary come to Progresso and then return just for these delicious tacos. One of my friends who is Mexican took us here because it was he favorite Mexican food in all of Atlanta. It definitely does not disappoint! I have shown around ten different people this place, and they all love it. The pastor and Asada tacos are absolutely amazing. It is definitely a hole in the wall place, as it is a restaurant located in the back of a grocery store, but they make the best tacos I have ever had hands down! My mother wanted some tacos and we decided to check this place out. Parking is located to the right of the building when facing it. When you go inside you have to go to the back to locate the order place for the restaurant portion. The menu is in Spanish and English and the tacos were 1.89 each. One of the first things I did when I moved to Atlanta from California was to find a spot that had pastor tacos that were close to what I am accustomed to out west. It took me a whole year of eating disappointing tacos throughout atl before I was recommended this taqueria/Mexican grocery store. Before I go any further I want to say that when I asked friends and family for their Rec's what I got was a host of Americanized places that served Mexican food made for southerners, which if your into pulled pork tacos or fried chicken tacos then these are fine. I myself am not a fan of Mexican food meant to appeal to southern taste buds. This place has the best tacos in town, hands down with none of the bs that comes with expecting ground beef taco gtfo with that crap. read more

We ate here several times while staying in Atlanta for a week last year. The food was great, good customer service. A little bit of a wait once, but well worth it. All I have to say that this place has the best tasting and priced burritos and tacos I have ate in Atlanta so far. I have gone to too many taco or so called "Mexican" restaurants here within ITP and OTP. Everything is generic Chipotle or Moe's tasting. Nothing against thesr places but real authentic Mexican street food has been difficult to come by. Obviously, I haven't been to every Latino/Mexican restaurant but this place just reminds me of home....west coast LA food. have to say this is one of my favorites places. Love, love, love prison tacos. I typically get the pastor and pollo, but I've tried the huaraches (homemade tortilla with meat, lettuce, cheese, mayo, etc on top) and they are AMAZING. It helps to know a tiny bit of Spanish, especially if you need something special (extra hot sauce or something). The guys there are really nice. Make sure you have some extra time on your hands because they make everything to order, so if it's busy, you'll be waiting a while - but it's worth it. read more

I tried getting food today at this taqueria in the back of this little grocery store. I walked to the back and stood there for five minutes or more while the two male cooks continued to make food and ignore me. Finally one of them said I had to go up to the front register and place my order. I walked up to the front of the store where the one cashier was sitting on a little step behind the counter engrossed in his phone. He ignored me for two or three minutes until he finally looked up and I said I'd like to place a food order for the taqueria in the back. He said go back there and place your order. So at this point it was pretty obvious that this business did not want to serve an old white man.I set my drink on the counter and walked out and got in my car and drove off. Yep, there are some "bandos" directly across the street, but don't let that deter you. This is one of those, "if you know, you know" spots in Atlanta. Staaaaaaahhhp. So when I moved from Decatur to East Atlanta, I was sad that BuHi was so much farther away from me. No longer! These tacos are legit, y'all. I don't know how so many restaurants in Atlanta get away with charging $3-4 for a damn mediocre-ass taco when places like El Progreso are dishing out the real deal for a fraction of the price. My favorites are the al pastor and the carnitas, but really, all of them are good, with double tortillas and generous servings of meat. Most are $1.49, while the tripe and tongue tacos are $1.89. I haven't tried any of their other offerings, but will eventually, I'm sure. They have burritos, tortas, menudo, fried whole fish, and a few other non-taco entrees. The last time I was here, I tried the horchata (they also have a few other flavors of agua fresca) and I swear I almost cried from happiness. I doubt it's homemade but it's not made from the really crappy mix with gross aspartame that some places have on tap. Delicious tacos and delicious horchata without having to get on the freeway? I'm getting all choked up now just thinking about it. El Progeso is also a grocery store, featuring a meat counter (including pre-seasoned meats for fajitas and the like), fresh produce, and all kinds of Mexican goodies. Including Mexican sweet breads! Oh man, growing up in southern California, these were practically a staple. My SO doesn't care for them because they're not the super sweet sugar bombs he's used to. OH WELL MORE FOR ME. Service is fine but on the slow side, which makes sense since a lot of the food is made to order. After you eat, get your ticket from the counter and pay the cashier in the front of the store. The store's parking lot is adjacent to the south side of the store and accessible only from Boulevard. The giant complex across the street is the federal penitentiary. Don't let that scare you off. Practically in the shadow of Atlanta's version of Shawshank, this little market is easy to miss. I drove past it many times before a last minute need for tortillas got me to finally go in. I couldn't have been more pleased that I did. The only other market for chili peppers and other mexican ingredients in the neighborhood, Nayat, was always been disappointing. Not, El Progreso. Part of a local Mexican supermarket and butcher chain, they are a great addition to the neighborhood. Wide, clean aisles. A full range of mexican ingredients and products, including a full butcher department, at great prices. And the extra, special bonus - a grill counter in the back where you can get a assortment of tacos, torta, quesadillas, and burritos. I've stuck to the tacos since I started going here a few months ago because they are such a great deal and so darn tasty. The most dependable tacos are the carne asada, al pastor, and chorizo. The barbacoa and the carnitas can be really good and alternately a little dry. I believe they just aren't as fresh some days as others. I need to branch out and try the other grill items but the ability to feed the family a dinner of tacos overflowing with meat for less than $13 is too hard to beat. If you are in the Grant Park area, this is definitely a market and taco bar worth checking out. read more

The food is in the back of the store. Had three chorizo tacos and they were sooooo good. They are not gringo tacos so don't expect sour cream and cheese. You can't beat the price of $1.49 each. We heard about this place through some friends that affectionately call it "Prison Tacos." While I'm usually frightened to hang out in close proximity to the state penitentiary, hubby had a hankering for tacos and wanted to brave it. Like any supportive wife, I allowed him to be adventurous and go to the restaurant... alone. :-) I was very happy with the meal that he returned with - a quick turnaround, might I add. I ordered a chicken burrito with rice, beans, cheese, cilantro, and onions (I like to keep it simple) and he ordered pairs of barbacoa, pastor, and asada tacos. Both meals were delicious! I was very impressed with the rice and beans in my burrito as they tasted very authentic. Hubby said that he noticed the beans being cooked with some type of pepper and they weren't mushy at all - clearly made from scratch! Each of the meats were very flavorful. We also tried the red and verde salsas - the salsa verde was really good and the red salsa had quite a kick! Apparently there was an even hotter option... not sure I would've been able to handle it. All in all, I think we've found another Mexican go-to for great street food. Next time, I'll travel with hubby and peruse the grocery store as well. :-) read more

Finally, Finally, Finally we made it to Prison Tacos AKA EL Progreso, and boy were we happy! Obviously everyone knows this it's one of the premium spots to get tacos so guess what I got? TACOS!!!! The tacos are running about 1.89, but they are loaded with Meat! I ordered 5 tacos, 2 bbq beef, 2 Pastor, and 1 carne Asada. Hands down the BBQ beef is king, Pastor in the middle and Asada probably won't get again. My wife ordered a Chicken burrito with Cheese, Beans and Rice and it was excellent. The right cut of meat, the right seasoning and everything. Has the taste of a back yard carne asada with friends. Salsa bar has red and green salsa with some guacamole salsa as well. El Progresso is a wonderful hidden treasure in east Atlanta that I had the pleasure of trying out for the first time last weekend. It's a neighborhood bodega that has all the essential things you such as small groceries, beauty products, a meat shop and a cafe. A friend and I together got the shrimp fajita plate, two pollo tacos, two carnita tacos and two al pastor tacos. WOW so i read the reviews today and decided to take a leap! Man I thoroughly enjoyed the tacos. The ONLY reason it is 4 stars is I feel like the chroizo ( which I am a huge fan of, I get it everywhere) lost its flavor. I am believing the taco over powered it or something, It seems most people say it is the best and I got 2 of those and a pork one as well. The pork had great flavor and was very good. Again I liked the tacos but was a little let down on the chorizo. I will be back when I come to town. I would go back tomorrow if I did not have meetings all day. My friends got the Chorizo burrito which was HUGE. They liked it and said the same thing they felt the Chorizo was lacking in flavor. I am going to get it again!
