Ended up walking out. Went in to get a burrito. Stood at the counter. A young guy was behind the counter cooking and walked past me several times and said nothing to me. I finally gave a friendly hello. He cuts me off and tells me "one minute" and points vaguely to my left and quickly goes back to what he was doing. Another customer walks over to where he just pointed. I assumed he was about to pay I just continue to stand there for a few minutes sweating because there's no AC. Finally, a man comes from another direction and starts speaking to the other customer in Spanish in a friendly tone. The man starts ordering and I see that he actually hadn't ordered before me. Another woman who just walked in is now standing behind him. I guess my black skin didn't get me any service. read more

Memories memories memories. So I'm a Mexican food lover to death and growing up in Southern California only amplified this craving. And if you're like me you know the best place to get authentic Latin food is from the supermarket. I ordered seasoned beef for Memorial Day from the butchers counter which you can get any meat seasoned if you just ask and the price is always reasonable. I ordered a carne asada burrito which was mouth watering and hot filled with: meat, cheese, avocado, rice, beans and love If you're in the EAV area please go out of your way to visit this place. Whether for groceries or lunch you won't regret the food. And if you don't speak Spanish it's okay they have employees who speak English. LA native, moved here a couple months ago. I grew up with taco trucks around every corner, literally, and I knew I would miss that most when I moved out here. Finally found this place that makes me feel a little more at home! Barbacoa was amazing! Definitely my favorite. Rich flavor and the meat was super soft. The Al pastor was also good but a little too salty...nothing a little bit of fresh lime won't fix. The carne asada was solid but not as good as the other two. I've been dying to get to this place because it looks so good. It is in the back of a grocery store and across the street from a Federal Medium Security Prison which is very interesting. Definitely worth a try and it's a lot so you could honestly get 1-2 tacos and the rice and beans and be completely full. I got 2 asada tacos with cheese and 1 barbacoa regular. I got a pastor taco, a chorizo taco, con arroz y frijoles (Spanish rice & great northern beans). Served fast, and a good portion. You've got good tacos here at El Progreso, but you don't in my mind have great tacos. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? El Progreso is about as authentic as is possible for grocery store tacos, and while that might be a surprise if you're used to bougie new age $4.00, I felt right at home coming to Atlanta from Los Angeles. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? $1.89 is surprisingly expensive when compared to the $1.25 to $1.50 tacos that you can get from most trucks, but as these tacos were slightly larger than normal I'll let it slide. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? My pastor and chorizo tacos were just okay. The meat was flavorful but too salty and slightly overcooked, and the tortillas came across as store bought and a bit stale. FINALLY had the chance to go and it was 100% worth it. I got 2 chicken tacos and a large horchata which was $12.99. They offered salsas on the bar and you could also request toppings behind the counter while ordering. Come here all the time for great, AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD! Non-Americanized which is perfect. I'm from California and I come here to get my fix whenever I'm feeling home sick. There's normally a line of people if you go in around lunch time M-F. Service is pretty speedy unless they're packed with people. It's the most authentic Mexican food I've found in Atlanta. My favorite was the pastor, but the asada and carnitas were also good! They're tiny, so I suggest ordering 4 if you're reasonably hungry, maybe 5 if you're starving. They come on corn tortillas like they should! AMBIANCE: Ok, it's in the back of a grocery store. It's order at the counter and seat yourself. But it's one of the authentic hole in the wall places! You go for the delicious tacos, not the decor or ambiance. Down the street from my house, El Progreso is an authentic taqueria inside a Mexican grocery store. Being from Los Angeles, this place makes me feel at home. In the many times I've been, I've always ordered the same thing, a vegetarian burrito, which is not on the menu. This last time, the person in front of me was ordering the same thing. As it is with authentic taquerias everywhere, the food rarely arrives quickly. And in this case, the eating area is always messy. But the burritos, which I get to go, are gigantic and just as they should be. Literally, the best taco I've ever eaten. Delicious. I convinced my (southern, white, old) in laws that we should eat lunch here instead of at a Panera and they agreed (probably because I was skimpy on the details of the location) but even they agreed that this food was spectacular. Of the tacos we collectively tried, the marinated pork was the best, followed by the BBQ. The chicken had a nice flavor but was a bit dry (something we corrected with the smooth, green mystery sauce that was on the tables). Personally, I loved the ambiance. Then again, I love hole in the wall places. If I'm going to eat Mexican food, I want to be the only white face and relish being greeted with skepticism. Taco perfection. Truly. Little corn tortillas with succulent meat, chopped onions, a mountain of fresh cilantro and lime wedges for squirting. I think my favorite was the barbacoa. So tender! Deep red hot sauce was okay and had some heat, but the orangey one was mostly flavorless. Then there was a white sauce that I didn't try because the hot sauce bar was kinda gross and most of the eating area was a mess. The awkward and unhelpful guy who took my money did come out to spray and wipe one of the tables down when I arrived, so at least that, but when I asked for water, he went to the back and then re-emerged and said there was no water. I asked if I could buy some and he nodded, but didn't tell me where. Maybe he had no idea what I was saying? I searched the store, but couldn't find any until I was leaving. Next time I'll just bring my own. They take cards, but only if you spend at least $5 i.e. at least 3 tacos. I paid $6 something for 3. That's a great deal! Like many stores/snack-shops-in-the-back, it's homey, small, decor isn't the usual millennial white tiles/minimalist with That Fern Tree Everyone Has. Walk to the back, but don't miss the baked goods section on the left. The menu is small. If you don't eat meat or dairy, just don't come here, or, just buy a bag of chips and eat those. The only vegetarian option is a cheese quesadilla but that might be fried in lard so....just eat whatever that is on the menu. Huaraches take a bit longer to make (made to order), mine took about 20 minutes but it was worth the four seconds in which I devoured it. SO good. Friendly, hard working people. No pretense. Homey. Cheap. $5 minimum on cards and no AMEX/Discover. Worth the short drive here from inside town. You won't regret it. read more

I kinda wished I had ordered more of the steak but, was honestly full! The cilantro and onions were super fresh, meat very tender and flavorful. They make their own hot sauce! My friend loves the Diablo but I was into the Verde. I've lived in a few different states and I know that the best Mexican food comes from kitchens in the back of Mexican grocery stores. I found this place via tiktok. El Progreso was good, but not great. I tried the asada and carnitas tacos. The asada tacos were pretty good although a bit dry. However, the carnitas tacos I didn't like at all. The meat had no flavor which is surprising for a carnitas taco. The rice and beans are decent. The best thing was surprisingly the chicken quesadilla. This review is solely about the butcher and not where you order food. I have on far too many occasions gone into the place to buy items from the butcher and they will see me standing at the counter and not offer to assist. What is worse is hearing their predominantly Spanish speaking customers who assume I don't speak Spanish comment about how they are not helping me. I normally try to be as patient as possible. Today the guy was eating so I patiently waited and looked at the various meats to see if I wanted to try anything. However, when he finished he got up and left me standing there for 5 additional minutes after looking me in the face. I put everything else I picked up back and left. I'm by far one of the most understanding and patient people. This review is not based on one or two times. Its based on a multiple attempts to see if this is intentional treatment or not. And because when I would come in with my partner who happens to be Mexican and he would get immediate assistance while I would not, I do feel its intentional at least on the one guys part. There is another gentleman who is more helpful but if I customer approaches your counter you should ask if they need assistance. If you're a butcher sell meat you whoever wants to buy it when the come in. Even the man at the restaurant stand could see my frustration and has seen it multiple times. It's a blatant disregard for someone who has attempted to support your business without jumping to conclusions. But enough is enough. read more
