My husband ordered chills relleno and it was cold inside . They took it back to correct. Then brought it back and again it was cold . The cheese was not melted but the plate was hot. His plate also came with taco unfortunately it was not good also. I order taco al carbon they were greasy . Sad we just stopped,just on out way back from Florida to NC . I've been going to El Potro for years! It was always a favorite growing up and I have very fond memories. I have not been in awhile. I was excited that I was able to catch the dinner buffet on Saturday! I was greeted and seated upon arrival. It was about 5pm. It wasn't very many people inside but I decided on the buffet and headed over to the bar. I grabbed a few wings. The wings were not hot. I advised my server and she went to the bar and stirred them. I should have stopped there but I attempted to make the most of it. More people was coming in so I figured they would change out somethings that had been sitting. That's what they used to do but I didn't see the guy I was previously familiar with. That didn't happen, they were only bringing out what was empty and periodically stirring the rest. I was able to make some nachos and make the most of it. In the pass it was great so I was disappointed this time. I hope that whenever I try it again its back to its former glory. read more

We love this place! The food is always consistently good and fresh. The buffet has a large selection of items and they are very good. I've ordered the fajita chicken nachos off the menu and they are huge and quite delicious. For the price you can't beat them. One of the other reviews mentioned the manager being confrontational with them, I would be absolutely shocked if this were true. He's the nicest and most solicitous person and spends a lot of time walking around and checking on everything. I've been there many, many times and I honestly have never even noticed that they have music playing! So no, the negative nelly on here is just looking to cause problems for them. They have a lunch buffet 7 days a week and a dinner buffet on Friday and Saturday nights. I usually hate buffets but my family enjoys going here because everyone can get what they want without waiting for cheaper then if we ordered it off the menu. My son loves the guacamole and cheese dip that he can get to go with his food. He also loves the beans, fresh veggies, and cheese quesadillas all available on the buffet. My husband LOVES the chicken wings and chicken cooked with onions and peppers. I love the fresh delicious pico de gallo. We really liked this place, the people, the wait staff, the music, the generous wine glass, but, mis amigos, this review is all about the food. It just wasn't right. My wife and I live in Dallas but have spent a lot of time in San Antonio, the place for excellent Mexican food. El Potro's food is just marginal, at best. I had fish tacos with unidentifiable fish pebbles and pico de gallo and cheese. What happened to the traditional cabbage and sauce? None. And the corn tortillas were completely soggy, like they had been microwaved, and they were inedible. Wife had shrimp quesadillas that were pretty good but very salty. She didn't have too much to comment on. BTW, while we there (Thursday, 7 pm) there were only 3 other tables with people. Sad. read more

Usually I love this restraunt but tonight will be my last night. I'm the type of person that if I see prices that I don't recognize I will ask questions. I understand that right now is very hard time for many people, but this was not okay. I wanted to know why you didn't have a sign or something informing people you were automatically putting gratuities. I'm all for giving tips for waitress cause everyone needs to live. what I am not for is being looked at like I should just follow along on what's on my ticket and pay. look I understand you told me that it is on the menu. awkwardly enough, the buffet doesn't have a menu so I'm sorry I didn't see it. there was no sign on the door and there were none on the register counter. I'm the type of person who is going to look at what restraunt post so that I won't do anything that is bad or what I can expect as a customer dinning there. Also to the owner who thinks I'm just a person who believes they are a know it all. I'm know I'm not. So I'm in Savannah for a robotics workshop at Skidaway and we end up staying at the local airport Hilton. One of the workshop coordinators recommends this place for dinner and drinks. I guess the drinks must be good because the food is definitely the worst I've ever had for a Mexican restaurant. The tips: 1. Yes, it's a pretty diverse buffet, which is what I ordered. In general it's all poorly made and the taste is horrid. It's obvious why they put the melted cheese at the beginning because that's the only thing that will make the food palatable. I've eaten at a number of Mexican style buffets and they've been fantastic. There's no pride in the product that this place produces. 2. The claim is that it's authentic Mexican food. Based upon what I observed of other dishes, this place needs that card revoked. I have a picture of the so-called fish tacos and it looked nothing like a fish taco that I've seen. Massively over-salted and overcooked. It was a damn Greek tragedy. 3. The guacamole is not fresh made. It's from a container and smoother than baby poop with a green alien-like color. The black beans were runny. Essentially a black bean soup. It looked like a cesspool with an after Pepto-Bismol poop color. It was disgusting. Even the cheese of doom couldn't save it. 4. I'm in the Savannah area so I would hope that a restaurant could cook shrimp properly. As wrong as a birther that thinks that having one American parent doesn't make you a natural born citizen. Overcooked and borderline rubbery. 5. There were these little cheese fajitas that were scary looking. I didn't even bother venturing into that territory. Watching someone eat one. I chose wisely. To the four-star reviewers. What the hell are you thinking? Are your standards that low for a Mexican restaurant? If the chicken wings are the reason you come here, there's something wrong. I've eaten at a Michelin two-star Mexican place before. It's fantastic comfort food and should be great everywhere. The decor, food quality, and pretty much the average service make this place a perfect fit for Restaurant Impossible. They need a complete overhaul of this horrific menu. I had a complete brick in my stomach and decided to sleep it off instead of going to downtown Savannah. I'm all about supporting local establishment but the community should be embarrassed about this place. This is low-quality food at its finest so avoid at all costs. This is a great restaurant if u want to save money. Menu is under $10. If you want to eat with a large group they have space. The tables are short by the wall and chairs are long. So funny. U will have to see that for yourself. Anyway the food was a little bit dalty but thats ok. read more

Stopped with the family on our way back to Florida. The food was ok for what it is, the service quick because they were pretty empty the moment that we came in. According to my uncle the chicken soup is a must (I didn't try it). Portions are ridiculous (good portions) and the drinks are huge. I shared a couple of things with my wife, chicken fajita, beef fajita and a beef quesadilla. If I'm ever in the area again I would definitely come back for the soup and try another fajita. read more

My husband occasionally has jobs in Savannah and I usually drive down with him because we really enjoy visiting the city. So we are there for the night and staying in the motel near the airport that we usually stay at. I was really hungry and needed to get something to eat so we stopped at El Potro. There were not many people there, but it was early so we figured, and were kind of hoping, that it was just because it was early for dinner. We were told to seat ourselves. I ordered number 17 which was a beef enchilada and a chile relleno. My husband ordered something that was supposed to be one of their special dishes. The only thing we enjoyed of the meal was the salsa and chips and a couple cans of beer, that's it. I have never had such a chewy chile relleno ever in my life, I'm guessing it was over battered and cooked too long. I couldn't eat it. The sauce on the enchilada was reminiscent of ketchup. My husbands plate was two large ground beef burritos covered in the ketchup like sauce and then had a heaping pile of ground beef and onions on top. Just the look of it was not appetizing, and he took one bite and couldn't finish it. We pretty much just asked for the check as quickly as we could so we could leave. We really enjoy going out for Mexican food, but this is not a place we would ever go to again. read more

I've eaten at El Potro Restaurants for over 30 years, but today was my last time. I asked the manager (didn't know he was the MNG at this point) if he would turn down the music, it was dominating our family conversation. He said he did not turn it on and someone else was in charge of it. I said I want to speak to that person. He said everywhere you go 'music is loud' I said no it's not, I'm a customer that is paying to eat here. He said he couldn't do anything about it. I returned to my table. When I looked up he motioned me back up to the cashier's desk then turned and said to follow him, he said come outside so I followed him. He turns around and asked, "Do you got a problem", arms going out from his side like he was challenging me to a physical fight. I said, no I don't have a problem, except that your music is so loud its hard to enjoy our meal. He said, "why do you come into my restaurant and treat me like a dog?" I said, "I haven't treated you like a dog, but I can leave and not come back." I never used fowl language and never disrespected him. I'm glad I didn't respond the way he wanted me to when he took me outside because he would have missed a few days of work and I would have probably went to jail for kicking the snot out of his greasy behind! Next time he tries this with a customer of a lesser sort, he is libel to get shot. read more
