Steak plate
Danielle R.

Decided to visit El Patron Saturday and get take out. I'd heard great things about the one on the westbank and decided to try this one out. When I walked in, it was basically empty. They had less than 10 customers. I ordered a steak plate that came with onions, bell peppers, beans, rice, guacamole, and lettuce. The girl who took my order was nice. She said it would be around 10 mins for my food and she was right. To my surprise when I opened it there were also some tortillas included. While it smelled good, and the steak and onions looked good, it was lacking in flavor. I had to put Tony's on my steak and peppers because there wasn't much flavor. Once I cut the steak up and put everything on a tortilla, it tasted okay but still not great. If I go back I'd try something different.

We were skeptical because the reviews aren't that great, but this place was fantastic. The A/C works well the place was nice and cold. The music in the place was not too loud and the booths are really big and comfortable. Our waitress was very attentive and helpful with every request we had. The salsa was our first indication that this place would be good, it was thick and flavorful not watery and sad. I wish I took photos of the rest of our meal but it was so good we dove right in. We had enchiladas verdes and they accommodated us and put two sunny side up eggs on those. The Spanish rice was so perfectly cooked, not mushy, and it had a sweetness to it like it was made with fresh tomatoes. I had pollo mole and it tasted homemade. My husband had carnitas and they were tender, flavorful, and had a nice crisp to them. He got the salsa verde on the side with them and it was creamy delicious and had the perfect heat from Serranos in it. The charro beans were also so good! So much flavor and had beef, bacon, and salchichas in it. So so good. I highly recommend giving them a chance. Great place for a casual Mexican meal. Oh also the horchata was really good and not watery.

Nothing marks a Mexican restaurant like their free chips. These are amazing. The Black bean dip and salsa is to die for as well.

This little restaurant is hidden away and you could almost miss it. If you love authentic Mexican cuisine served in perfect sized portions with amazing service, then you clearly don't want to. All of the food was amazing, and the environment was clean and inviting. We ordered the enchiladas, while not what I expected had a flavor profile that left my tongue singing and my stomach satisfied. The refried beans weren't quite as thick as I'd like, but that didn't hurt their flavor or my enjoyment in the slightest. The Spanish rice was some of the best I've eaten I'm years, and I'm looking forward to making this my regular stop for this cuisine.

The good fast good tasty food. Fresh refreshing Margaritas with a nice amount of kick. The bad Whoever idea it was to drinch a BURRITO in cheese and sauce I HATE YOU. Why have these restaurants adapted this trend of eating a BURRITO with a FORK! I intentionally asked for no cheese or sauce thinking hey I can get some extra foil and eat a BURRITO like a MAN But no it's to big the BURRITO is not steamed so now I have to eat this BURRITO like a woman why not have an option for ppl who don't like eating a BURRITO forks this is not a bowl!! Oh yea people in Chalmette POST REVIEWS WTF

Visiting the NOLA area for the first time and wanted some Mexican food. Found this place and I keep finding myself back here. The food is so flavorful and authentic. I thought it was going to be a Tex-mex type restaurant and the reviews almost stopped me from coming. This place is truly worth the trip. All the dishes my husband and I have tried are seasoned to perfection! They have a bar area as well and their 'Micheladas' were delicious with various selections of Mexican beer as well. The margaritas are cold and refreshing. This is definitely a place someone needs to check out at least once! The waiters are very polite and welcoming. Might come back to NOLA just for this place!!

I've passed El Patron innumerable times and decided to stopped by for Happy Hour. The inside of the restaurant is looks like a Cinco de Mayo celebration with Mexican flags strewn throughout the restaurant and Mexican celebratory art on the wall. Prior to being seated, I asked the young man that would be my waiter for throughout the evening if he would should me the restroom. The waiter pointed me to a very rudimentary, dual occupant ladies room. After existing the restroom, my waiter was no longer around so I returned to the greeter station but before I could completely make it there a waitress swooped up behind me and said I will seat you. I was seated in a slightly rickety booth and when I inquired as to the happy hour the waitress told me it didn't exist. My initial waiter was at the cashier, so I inquired to him if that was the case and he immediately dismissed her from my table. The waitress apologized and stated that "her English isn't good". The constant flow of a trickle customers made me think this place may have something but I would soon find out that I was very wrong. My waiter was attentive and kind. The margarita was good but it wasn't the best. The enchiladas were absolutely horrible! The meat was tasteless and the cheese was processed and oily. The rice was dry and everything else tasted like it came out of a can.

Clean, pleasant ambience.

My favorite restaurant. Their steaks are cooked just right. Their nachos that they serve as an appetizer are excellent. I love it!!!

Use to love this place.... But like most places over time, the prices went up and the quality went down. Sad

This place is decent. Good chicken quesadillas. Margaritas are good but I am pretty sure they are pre-made. Not very strong.

Our waitress gave us some chips and salsa. It was fine, salsa was a little peppery (not necessarily spicy, but a good bit of black pepper). Since it was Good Friday we ordered seafood dishes. My mom ordered the shrimp taco salad and I ordered some shrimp tacos. When my mom ordered the waitress asked what kind of dressing she wanted, but when she brought it out she didn't tell my mom they already put a dressing on the salad. So the other dressing wasn't needed. My shrimp tacos were okay but needed a sauce to go on them. I asked the waitress and she said she could bring me one of the sauces they had, but that it'd be 50 cent. I still decided to get it and it added some flavor/moisture to the tacos. This place has some cute photo worthy areas. I've attached pics of 2 of them, but there's also a swing to take a pic by. When I went inside to take a pic of the chair with the tequila made me do it sign, there was a good bit of fruit flies around there which was aggravating as I had to keep trying to swat them away as I took the picture.

Hubs had the house recommended burrito and said it was good. Our friend had a combo, enjoyed part then and took the rest home. I went with the stuffed poblanos with chicken. Note that when you add meet to these it is put on top, makes sense if the poblanos are prepped early. I'm not sure it needs the breading but things seem to get breaded in NOLA. It was also oddly salty in some spots, almost like someone had poured instead of sprinkled. It was a good option after a day of Mardi Gras fun, especially given wait times at other places closer in (we were told 1.5 to 2 hours for good at Buffa's and Port of Call had closed at 6 so we headed out a little at our friends suggestions.

The cup of soup had tortilla strips that were extremely too large for the tiny soup and they were rubbery and extremely salty. It just felt like I was eating soggy chips and not a proper tortilla soup. I'm glad I didn't order the bowl. The queso was also very salty. By looking at others food it was very generic food and, yes I'm Mexican and therefore bias, but even allowing for the fact that we're not in Mexico and giving some type of grace, nothing appeared Mexican! I'm sad they sell this and market it as a Mexican restaurant as the food was not even remotely close to Mexican flavors. They need to look up basic tortilla soup online and try again. I'm disappointed and will not be coming back. Please check your recipes and at least get closer to Mexican flavors. I understand there are a variety of Mexican flavors but this completely missed the mark. I do not recommend it if you're looking for real Mexican flavors or flavors that are remotely close to Mexican flavors. Look elsewhere.

Large waiting area to stand and wait near the hostess station. Also has a bar area which looks like first come, first serve. We ordered drinks while we waited and hung out in the lobby area. Finally we were sat. Complimentary chips and salsa were brought right away. We Ordered drinks and the chorizo queso, which came fairly quickly. The queso is HOT, bubbling in a volcanic rock molcajete. Sooo good. Strongly suggest this item! I ordered the Tacos Tijuana (lengua). My husband ordered grilled fish tacos and an ala carte cheese quesadilla. The food was great. Lengua was a little dry- I know it's lean but it was not as juicy and gamey as I like. No other complaints except the guacamole that came with my tacos tasted artificial or "off". It also stayed very green throughout the meal which tells me there is either a lot of lemon or it is premade with something to make it not oxidate like fresh avocados. It was just not great guacamole. The frijoles charro on the other hand were excellent! Lots of flavor, pork, cooked nicely and seasoned well. I could eat that by itself. I will for sure be back.
