I am visiting from south Texas. Didn't think I would find a good Mexican spot in town, especially for Cinco de Mayo that wasn't over priced or super packed. Waked in and Mexican music embraced me! I was hoping the goat tacos would compare to the amazeballs delicious ones Johnny Sanchez formerly made but unfortunately these were nowhere close and the goat didn't have much flavor. This was your basic Guatemalan joint and the tacos and fajitas were ok and decently priced but nothing really jumped out at me as being anything above average. I was also a bit sad they didn't have a Caldo de Pollo on their soup menu. So decent authentic food with slower than average service. Polo Loco I went to the restaurant about 6 weeks ago and a friend ordered Poco Loco. It looked amazing. I ordered it today for pickup. Although it was delicious, the portion size was maybe 30% of what he received. There was 1/2 chicken breast, about 1/6th of the vegetables I saw some rice. I had to find something else to eat. Came here for a quick dinner with my girls. Amazing food, best service. Delicious flavors. My daughter had the steak tacos which were amazing and I had the Carne Asada with yellow rice and beans, soft steak and wonderful flavors. My eldest had the chicken quesadilla which was also amazing. El Paso was pretty good, but I wasn't blown away. I came here for lunch and the place was dead except for me and my dining companion. The waitress was super nice, even though she seemed a bit more wrapped up in watching a talk show than taking our order, but that wasn't a huge deal. Once she came over, she dropped off some really good chips and salsa and we looked over the menu. I got the carnitas quesadilla which came with a side of sour cream and tomatoes. The quesadilla was pretty good, but I found the carnitas a bit dry. Other than that, it had good flavor and it made for a decent lunch. My friend got a burrito that looked outstanding and I think that I will get that next time. Service was a bit slow, but I would probably stop in for lunch again or to get a "to go" order. Eating at this place makes me wonder- if people eat like this in Mexico; why come to the United States? Clean place with great native feel (they had fútbol on one screen and a telenovela on the other) with excellent cheerful service(our waitress decided the combinations of meat with tacos with sopes with gorditas upon us deciding we wanted to try six kinds of meat), and two of the most incredible hot sauces I ever tasted. I would say stick to the a la carte/tapas orders, grabbing a varied selection of tacos, sopes and gorditas. If one goes to El Paso one MUST get the cabeza taco, possibly one of the most flavorful beef dishes on the menu. All in all, perhaps the best all around experience I have had in a Mexican restaurant in the New Orleans area- not to be missed. The place definitely beats its numerous neighbors. read more

I knew this place was authentic because back where my wife and I are from, if you ask for agua, it's one of the flavored drinks. I brought my son who is only fond of drinking teas, waters, and the occasional Gatorade. I ordered a water and was brought an horchata. I'm originally from Texas and have lived in New England for 3 years, once this happened all we could do is laugh and have the warmness in our heart that we are back in the south and at an authentic place and we aren't up north anymore. This place is a wonderful family run business with the grandparents in the kitchen and kids in the front of house. The Honduran tacos are delicious with the cold cabbage salad on top. We had such a great time eating dinner here! The food was super legit and there was even drunken karaoke in Spanish on the other side of the restaurant...absolutely delightful! I had the fried chicken with fried plantains and just cannot resolve how amazing it was! Service was phenomenal and the drinks were strong and delicious. Go to El Paso for delicious authentic Mexican food. It made us feel we were in Mexico. The restaurant is unpretentious and small, but the food is great, real Mexican, (not Tex-Mex). My partner ordered 4 tacos with 4 different fillings, pork, steak, chicken and chorizo (sausage). His favorite was chorizo. Two other choices were head and tongue. The fillings were wrapped in soft corn tortillas and served with 2 types of hot sauce. I ordered chile rellenos, battered and cheese stuffed peppers that were filled and topped with Mexican cheeses, (not Velvetta or Kraft cheddar cheese). I rate the food 5 stars, but the down side was the noise. There were 3 TV screens, all showing different Mexican soap operas plus a radio blaring Mexican music with commercials. Because the loud TV and radio noises were annoying and distracting, I rate the restaurant 4 stars. We would definitely return for the food and hopefully sit at a less noisy table. read more

I am in love. Why are proper taco's so hard to find? I searched a high and low to find a little authentic Mexican place that puts meat, onion and cilantro on a pair of corn tortilla. And El Paso does just that. I ordered four tacos for $2 each; chicharones (belly), lengua (tongue), chorizo, and cabeza (head). I also ordered the ceviche. All that taco's were delightful. I had a beef stew (caldo de res), and it tasted just like the ones I've had in Mexico. However, other than the tasty food, don't expect much from the restaurant experience. The service is horrible. No one greets you and the waiter has no personality or customer experience. Furthermore, the food is way overpriced. The prices on the menu are not accurate, the food costs more than the stated price. An average size stew is $11.00. An average price of carne asada with beans and rice is $12.00. An agua de horchata is $4.00. Although the food tastes authentic, the experience and the prices are not worth it. No complementary chips and salsa is served. read more

At the time I was in a wheelchair and the place is small and not handicap friendly but despite that I really enjoyed the strawberry margarita I had it was on the rocks and was so good !! This place passed the third time test. It has been amazing every single time. As I mentioned before, don't come for a quick lunch. Prepare to spend an hour but they have the best tacos I've had outside New or Old Mexico. Every dark person that is not from the US (and not just black) always think I am one of them due to my skin color and speak their language to me like I'm supposed to know it. It is a compliment to me, not an insult.I studies French in highschool ans college because....I am not sure. Women liked it. I remember just enough to mess up my Spanish. I chose to try to learn more Spanish just to order from this place. Ask for lengua, cabeza, and if you like goat, their Chivo is top notch. I had a hard time my first time so I spent the next 4 weeks studying Spanish and the last time I came, I ordered in Spanish and they loved it. And to be honest, they took better care of us just because I tried. The green salsa, *Salsa Verde" is Amazing, and the tacos compliment it perfectly. The red seems to be for Gringos. The food is really good, but like several other reviewers have mentioned, if you don't speak Spanish, you'll be at a disadvantage. The hubby and I went to pick up some burritos and tacos to go one night and the woman behind the counter spent more time watching her show than trying to interact with us even though there was no one else in the restaurant at the time. We had to point to things on the menu, but it was still very hard to communicate with her. And sadly I never took an ounce of Spanish and my husband forgot everything from high school, so we were seriously disadvantaged. If you're looking for typical cheese drenched gringo oriented Mexican food, drive right by this little hidden gem, you'll find that right down the road. Now, if on the other hand, you want real food, this is your place. Tacos the way they are meant to be, with only onion and cilantro gracing absolutely luscious cabeza, or al pastor, or chivo, or asada, etc... Or perhaps handmade gorditas or sopes, with a bit of avocado and queso fresco are what you might try. Ceviche tostada was killer, as well. Service was absolutely charming, the daughter of the owners was incredibly helpful and friendly, bringing us out two bottles of Mama's special hot sauce (which we didn't get on our first visit, be sure to ask, they're not to be missed!).
