Best Mexican food in Toledo. Always great service and food! Not to mention great margaritas.

We have a deck of Foodie Cards as presented by 101.5 The River, and El Nuevo Vallarta was the choice tonight. Our first time at this establishment. This restaurant is on the smaller side, but there is also an outside sitting area. They also have a small bar area as well. Very eclectic and colorful decor, booths, chairs, etc. making for a festive environment. Our server was very knowledgeable and was able to answer any questions we had regarding the massive menu. El Nuevo Vallarta has very good salsas (red & green) and mixed with the Pico de Gallo, made it quite tasty! The food was out to our table a very short time after our order was taken. We had the Taco Salad Fajitas and Mexican Pizza - decent sized portions. We also ordered a large margarita for $10, and it was enough for 2 ample drinks. Good value for what you got. read more

I know some people that frequent this restaurant and recommended it to me, so I decided to come. Firstly, I walked in and was hit with the decor. I liked it. It was nice, and the restaurant felt homey and welcoming. I was served almost immediately, and was brought a complimentary serving of chips and salsa. My waitress was very friendly and accommodating. I ordered some shrimp tacos and requested a side of rice and beans with a portion of spicy salsa as well. The food came out in no time. I tried the salsa--goddamn it was hot but it was delicious--and it paired nicely with my tacos. The special sauce that came with my tacos was tasty as well. Stopped for a carryout after work. I ordered the #22 combo, consisting of a burrito, Chile relleno and a taco. My protein of choice was carne asada (which the waitress needed clarification that I wanted steak). Not promising. I guess part of this is my fault for ordering carryout Mexican food. Unless you're under the influence at a taco bell, with no better sense of judgement, it's just not a good idea. That said, I couldn't help myself because I REALLY wanted Mexican food for dinner and I didn't want to deal with San Marcos (see my prior review) and I didn't feel like driving to Waterville (Cocina de Carlos because I live in West Toledo and work downtown). El Nuevo Vallarta is really close to home and it was a really long day. Anyway, I digress... I go to the place and it's starting to get busy. Not a problem. I place my order and grab a seat at the bar. Food is in my hands in under 10 minutes! Homeward bound to and adult beverage and Mexican food!!! Oy... I finish my cocktail, feed the cat and grab my carryout. I sit down and open the container. Again, OY... It looked like they put the 3 items in the aluminum pan and liberally doused everything with salsa rojo. Maybe I should have used the word excessively? I had to look at the carryout menu I grabbed to remember what I ordered because one couldn't tell by appearance. The chili relleno tasted good, but it wasn't like any I'd had in the past. The ones I've had are stuffed with cheese then dredge in fluffy, beaten egg, then fried. I'm thinking this was maybe fried (or baked?) And was then covered with cheese and red salsa and some kind of cut up beef was placed on top. If it was steak, it was round steak. Really tough and no flavor. They did the burrito the same way. The taco was a repeat of the first 2 items. So, I ate all of the chili relleno (except for the really stringy stem end they didn't cut off) , half of the taco and a quarter of the burrito. The dinner came with chips that they made, but they didn't seem very fresh. The salsa was really good! So, I owe it to the place to go back and right another review. When that happens, I'll be sure to eat it there and get ground beef or chicken. It might be a while though... read more

Had a party of 16 people. The service was perfect and the food was incredible!! I live in San Diego now so I know authentic Mexican. This place is amazing. From the salsa to the carnitas, rice, beans and Queso. Even their chips are great. Definitely recommend you won't go wrong. read more

While my prior review mentioned watery salsa, my most recent experience was exactly the opposite!! The salsa was superb- Lots of fresh thick tomato and spices! Delicious!! The ambiance is very typical of most Mexican restaurants, with a lively vibe. I appreciated having the option of a booth for having a comfortable conversation with my friend. Service was very quick. Literally, we were seated and chips/salsa were placed on our table with no small talk. Okay, but a quick hello would have been nice. Since the salsa was delicious and I was hungry, no problem. The guacamole was delicious and freshly made. My friend and I both enjoyed our entrees. I had a specialty chicken breast dish that was on the spicier side and plentiful enough that I took home leftovers even though I was hungry when my dinner arrived. It came with a corn and garlic salad that others might enjoy, but wasn't my thing. Also came with vegetarian beans with cheese... which I always find to be a bit thin at this restaurant, while my personal preference would be for thicker beans and more of then. Since my entree was great, not a big deal but worth noting if someone ordered a vegetarian entree. I also ordered a small margarita that was okay, but I only drank half as it wasn't that tasty for my preference. Overall, a very enjoyable experience in a festive atmosphere with excellent salsa and guacamole... important criteria for any Mexican restaurant in my opinion. Also very good quality entree. We stopped here after being at the hospital all day with family. Actually stopped on a whim as we were going to go somewhere else. I'm so glad we did. Food was amazing. The salsa has vastly improved and couldn't get enough of it. I unknowingly ordered the same dish and glad I did. The flavors popped in your mouth. By far the BEST Mexican Restaurant in Toledo. The Carnitas is to die for. I highly recommend getting some Carnitas Fajitas (there not on the menu but they will make them.) Coming from California, I have high standards and high expectations when I eat Mexican food. So on my most recent trip back to Toledo to visit family, they brought me to El Nuevo Vallarta for dinner. The staff were friendly and the service was fast and attentive, especially since we had almost 15 people in our party. We ordered pitchers of margaritas and there were endless chips and salsa for the tables. We also ordered some guacamole and some queso dip. I thought the guacamole had a strange taste to it - as if they used sour cream in the mix or something tangy. It wasn't my favorite guacamole ever but it was alright. For my entree, I chose the fajitas rancheros which came with chicken, shrimp, chorizo, and carne asada as well as sautéed veggies. I opted for corn tortillas on the side. The dish also came with rice, beans, lettuce, sour cream, guacamole, and pico de gallo. There was easily enough food there for several meals. The fajitas themselves had great flavor but the rest of the dish fell sort; lacking flavor and seasoning (the rice, the beans, etc). All in all, for Toledo standards, El Nuevo Vallarta is a decent place to grab a bite to eat, but there are definitely other places in Toledo that offer what is more authentic Mexican food and at a much cheaper price. read more

This is a cute little spot that does a great business, but don't be deterred by all the cars in the parking lot. The restaurant accommodates more people than you might expect. The ambiance is casual with bright colors and lots of Mexican inspired decor. It's a little bit loud, as it is crowded with lots of people conversing. It's a comfortable place. The menu has many food selections! I ordered a chicken burrito with vegetarian beans, with a side of guacamole. The guacamole is amazing!! It's not made tableside, but seemed to be very fresh and well seasoned. My burrito was pretty good, with a generous portion of chicken. The salsa was disappointing, as it seemed watery. The beans were honestly not what I expected. Yes, I wanted vegetarian (without lard), but they were on the watery side. The overall meal was enjoyable, but not super authentic. Still, decent Mexican food for Toledo (where I've never had a meal that rivals Mexican Town in Detroit). I definitely recommend it, but keep your expectations reasonable. Order the guacamole. Unlike some places in Toledo, they don't prepare at tableside. They just make it really tasty. It's a little spicy and smooth with good chunks of avacado and a reasonable price. Order two of them! I lived in Los Angeles for 8 years. I have had stellar Mexican food. El Neuvo Vallarta would sit comfortably in LA. They had run out of skirt steak and asked if I was okay with fajita steak. I was. The steak delivered a nice subtle flavor and the vegetables on the plate had just the right amount of char. My wife got a tasty burrito topped with shredded pork and a verde sauce. The sauce was a little wetter than she wanted, but still very tasty. Neither the chips nor the salsa are memorable in a good or bad way, which was the only average moment. Mexican food in Toledo has been a little hit or miss for me. El Neuvo Vallarta was a definite hit and probably the best in Toledo. Especially that guacamole. read more

Another great spot when visiting UT. A very good Mexican dinner with a large menu and friendly service. The salsa tells the story for many Mexican restaurants and El Nuevo has very good salsa. We also enjoyed a cup of Queso. I enjoyed my Tacos Calientos which had nice and spicy chorizo mixed into the chicken. Everyone at our table finished their meals and agreed the food was tasty. The only thing keeping this from that 5th star is nothing had that Wow factor but next time I'm in Toledo I know where to get Mexican. read more

Toledo has no shortage of authentic and 'Muricanized Mexican restaurants, but El Nuevo Vallarta is notable in that it bridges this gap with well executed dinners that accommodate a range of preferences. As for myself, I like to order spicy dishes. A recent favorite, the Platillo Autlan, is your choice of chicken, beef, or shrimp tossed in a spicy, citrusy cilantro cream sauce. It is surprisingly light tasting and has the appearance of saagwala. I have asked for it as they normally make it as well as extra spicy; both ways are fantastic. Another authentic though less spicy offering is the wet burrito, a football sized tortilla filled with beef tips, rice, beans, cheese, onions, all topped off with great ranchero sauce, cheese, lettuce and sour cream. Even when I manage to put a pretty big dent in this burrito (with the help of my favorite dining companion, tequila) I still have enough leftovers to pack a to-go container. This bad boy holds up against wet burritos I've had in restaurants with Spanish language menus. More standard fare includes chimichangas, enchiladas, tacos and whatnot in various combinations presented in their phone book of a menu, all of which can scratch that "shut up and give me my Midwestern slop" itch that we all get from time to time. read more

Ok just found this gem hidden deep in Toledo we are driving from Detroit to Dayton. We had the fajita special service was so fast it will make your head spin. Food was fast and hot. The food was good for the prices and the service was phenomenal, but not the best chimichangas I've had. I like a real crunchy, fried chimichanga and this one was still the color of a regular tortilla shell. The queso was delish and I agree the salsa was not out of a jar- loads of yummy salsa in it.
