Pork tamale and Carne Asada taco served with tortilla chips and tortillas
Marcie L.

I was excited to check out this spot, known for its authentic Mexican food at great prices. Tacos are $4, tamales $3.75, and burritos around $11. There's a salsa bar, and tortilla chips are complimentary with your meal. I arrived just before the line grew, with at least 10 people waiting to order shortly after. Once I placed my order, it took less than five minutes to get my food. I went with the Carne Asada taco and a pork tamale, as that was the only tamale option available. While the food was good, it was served cold and didn't quite deliver the "wow" factor I had anticipated. Parking was a breeze, with plenty of spots available thanks to the many stores in the complex.

I really like this place. The food is always very good and it's not over priced. So many taco shops in Encinitas, Cardiff and Leucadia charge outrageous prices for average quality food. El Nopalito has great tasting food at a great price. The salsa bar has a great line up of salsa's and the carrots are super good. They do have a bathroom in the back, but you must have the front end employee hit a magic bottom to unlock the door to go to the back. If will be back and I'm bringing friends.

I have tried Nopalito products such as chips or salsa from the grocery store or even the carne asada from the Nopalito market but the restaurant was delicious and well-priced! Questionably the best carne asada tacos I have ever had, along with the best machaca burrito ever! The tacos are huge, double wrapped in delicious fresh warm corn tortillas smothered in salsa fresca with a generous amount of guacamole on the top. They even add a handful of chips with every order. The machaca burrito is also quite large. Both were $11! I can't wait to try more off their menu!

I tried to check into El Nopaloto restaurant and realized that it was not listed. There are two El Nopalitos in the same parking lot so it is kind of confusing. You can usually tell a good restaurant by the crowds, and that is the case here! You may have to wait 5 minutes to place an order, it is totally worth it. The traditional Mexican offerings are quality delicious treats. The salsa bar is a nice way to test out some different varieties of salsas. I am a fan of the roasted pepper and tomato but they have a nice variety including fresca, verde, chipotle and of course guacamole. They also will sell you all kinds of Mole, tamales and enchilada sauces here. On weekdays they offer beef and chicken soup and on weekends they change that to consome, menudo and Pozole. I usually order some shrimp in a ranchero sauce. Their shrimp cocktails was the best one that I have ever eaten. It was slightly sweet yet balanced with a touch of heat and a whole lot of flavor. I don't know if I will ever be able to eat here without picking some up. Whatever you end up with will be a treat. yum.

Went in here because my mom loves their salsa and fresh tortillas, so I ordered some carne asada fries, but beware everyone: they have beans and nacho cheese on them, plus jalapeños on top. Not my favorite carne asada fries which is a shame because the actual meat is so good. Next time I'm getting the carne asada tacos, hope they don't come with beans!

200 review !!! I found this place on Yelp and it looked super authentic. I'm working up in this area and good Mexican food seems to be hard to find. Went to 560 Santa Fe Dr, and went inside and was surprised to find a market and not a taco shop?!What the hell? To find out there are two different El Nopalito in the same mall, the restaurant is right next to 7-11. Once inside you can tell this place is legit! Few tables inside that lead you to the counter were they have glass covered area with some simmering meats, stews , not really sure what was in there? Great authentic Mexican menu , too many choices of meat to chose from . Have your standard and also including birria, lengua and ,chicharron. if you want to try some new stuff this is your place. I went with a carne asada burrito $ 4.87 and carnitas taco $2.89. Good prices here too . The have a great salsa bar with 5 or 6 salsa's and carrots , onions, cilantro and roasted peppers. Salsa's are excellent . Ripped into the carnitas taco first .Carnitas the way I liked it,juicy, flavorful, and in two soft corn tortillas topped with straight up gauc no fillers. Carne burrito , marinade meat in a fresh made tortillas , saw a guy carting the tortillas over from the market freshly made . After having the food here and loving the carnitas I was back a week later to order a carnitas burrito and a Al pastor taco. Carnitas still some of the best I have had . Found a excellent taco shop in an area were I didn't think I could find good Mexican food. Yelp you have delivered again! Anybody have any recommendations for Taco shops in the Encinitas/Carlsbad area?

I guess you can say it's really like being in Mexico. Tastes good, but doesn't FEEL very good later. Nope. Not ever going back.

The salsa bar had EVERYTHING from salsas to cucumbers, radishes, and pickled vegetables! The service was friendly and fast. I could tell this is a popular lunch spot because many people were coming in for both takeout and dine in. Tripa - 5/5, SO GOOD! I love when my intestines are more on the crispy/deep fried end. No gamey taste. Carne Asada - 4/5, this was a loaded taco or something because I've never had pico, guac, and beans on top. I prefer no frill tacos with onions and cilantro. Lengua - 2/5, not my fave. It was wet and bland.

The last time I came here was on a late Sunday night and I went with their Dos Amores Burrito which was packed with lots of carnitas and asada. I love that it was mostly all meat and full of flavor. No regrets. Besides their tacos and burritos they also have fajita bowls and weekly specials. They even have a full vegetarian menu if you are into that. The place is super casual and located in the corner of the strip mall. They have lots of tables in chairs inside for you to enjoy your food. There is also a salsa bar to grab sauces. Just a warning their green sauce is very spicy which I love. You can see the workers making your food behind the counter. I recommend if you're looking for some affordable quick mexican food in the area.

Talk about a HIDDEN JEM. Right next to a gas station isn't usually someplace you find AWESOME food…read morebut this is one of those exceptions. Having set my Apple Maps before reading the description of the restaurant, my wife and I set our course on the way back from the San Diego Zoo. I didn't want to get home too late and the parking situation for the better restaurants near the zoo didn't look promising so we decided to go further away from San Diego to find a place on the way home near the 5 freeway. Cancun may not look like much but the food is pretty freaking amazing. My surf and turf burrito filled with generous amounts of shrimp and carne asada was incredible. Adding sour cream and guacamole just put it on another level. No burritos like this near my home. My wife's shrimp plate was also a winner. Lots of shrimp. My wife's only gripe was not enough rice and beans. Even the side of corn tortillas was moist and tasty. I'm not sure if they make their own tortillas but it seemed like it. Even the french fries are incredible. Nice and crispy but not dry. I thought I'd still be hungry after just the burrito but I had no idea what a monster it is. Even after eating 3/4 of it, the remainder was still heavy. The older lady working the register is so sweet. A little hard to understand since she has a thick accent but very nice and helpful. The cook was cool too. Very happy when I stopped before leaving to tell them the food was "delicioso". Don't let the gas station scare you away. The food is jammin'! I plan on stopping by again when I attend Comic-con next year.

Luckily we were given the tip to try El Nopalito which is located just off the northbound Santa Fe Drive exit on the 5. You might want to look at google maps if you don't know the area which is in an older somewhat run down strip mall. Don't let that fool you though, appearances can be deceiving. Indise El Nopalito is clean and fairly large, probably seating around sixty. The kitchen can be viewed from where you order, which I like. We ordered nothing but tacos for starters to see what we liked, they have 21 types of tacos on the menu, so we chose Carnitas, Carne Asada, and El Pastor. Good choices all, freshly made, well seasoned, great toppings and big portions. The two of us were almost full just eating the three tacos. But no, we wanted more, so we ordered the Mole Oaxaca (Red Mole) which was excellent. A very complex taste with cinnamon and chile. Three tacos and the mole finished us. The service was friendly and prompt and I enjoyed sitting there because there was much to see. When we walked in it was a few minutes before noon. We were really surprised because there were about thirty high school students there mostly having sodas and tacos. Within ten minutes they all disappeared to go back to school. The restaurant was almost empty for a few minutes and then many Mexican Landscape Workers came for lunch. At one point there were over twenty people in line and the restaurant was full! This all in the space of fifteen minutes. They did not order tacos, but the daily specials, stews, soups, etc. They were friendly too and there was a great atmosphere. We were impressed by the taste of the food, the great selection, and all we saw. Ignore my other reviews for Mexican restaurants in the Encinitas/Leucadia area, this is our new favorite! We will try to be there about 11:40 again.
