    Concha and Polvorones
    Monty D.

El Nayar's Bakery brings back memories of past bakeries I have been to: straight-forward, unpretentious and very affordable. This morning we tried 2 sweet breads (pan dulce). In the picture, the top bread is concha and the bottom cookie is polvorones. The concha is a small semi-sweet loaf, white and very light breading. Concha means shell in Spanish, which is what this bread looks like. The distinctive topping is made primarily from shortening, confectioner sugar and flour. This makes for a sweet, tasty topping. The concha at Nayar's is very typical of what I have had in many, many places. Polvorones is a whole class of cookies. Polvo in Spanish means powder or dust. As with these cookies, they crumble quite easily. They have a very mild flavor; the variation in color here is a result of coloring. They are semi-sweet and good with a cup of coffee. We ate them on their patio, which in the morning had plenty of shade and was set back enough to be away from the traffic.

The first and last time going here. Bread was a good portion size, but it was so dry you could choke on it. Tamales were mostly masa, with a small portion of meat in it. Wasn't bad tasting, more bland. Lady who was behind the counter wasn't very friendly but kept the place clean.

    The best in Redlands!

One-part bakery and one-part family restaurant, this is a classic Americana restaurant. Inside can be really busy, nearly every table and booth taken, or, you might find yourself relatively alone, but that could also change with surprisingly rapidity! I don't think I've ever tried lunch or dinner options in all my infrequent visits, but breakfast reigns supreme here, so there's that. Frankly, I've never had a bad meal here. Service is casual friendly, but slow and steady by design. I've always found the servers and staff to be cheerful and happy. The bakery is another review, but they have lots to choose from across the board.

My wife ordered the steak Benedict anI the corned beef Benedict. the quality of my wife's ssteak was not a very good sirloin cut, although the were at least able to cook it right My corned beef Benedict was the worst thing I have ever ordered or tasted. The menu indicated that it would be 1/3 lb of corned beef on the Benedict, however I got 2 of what was about an 1/8 lb corned beef hash that they formed into a patty. It was some low quality type canned hash that had some horrible unnatural flavor that incapacitated me with a bad headache for the rest of my Saturday afternoon. I told the lady in the cashier that their menu needs to be more truthful and indicate that it'll be corned beef hash and not sliced corned beef you would find in more legit delis. If they advertise 1/3 lb of corned beef and they deliver 1/4 lb of corned beef hash, they need to indicate so in their menu. I don't believe I shall return due to the bad food experience I had, but I am more of a picky when it comes to food since I am a very particular Chef. This is just my personal review of this place and why the single star rating.

The moment I walked in, I was surprised by how quiet and cold the atmosphere felt. It didn't feel welcoming or cozy like a bakery usually does. Instead, it felt more like walking into an office waiting room. Unfortunately, the service made the experience even worse. This was my first time visiting in person, so I had a few questions about the different cake flavors. The girl with braces seemed impatient the entire time and kept trying to rush me while I was speaking. At one point, she even exchanged a smirk with the other employee, which made me feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. I honestly didn't understand the attitude. In the end, I ordered the same raspberry cake because I completely lost interest in trying anything else. Ironically, this time the cake tasted way too sweet for me. I even tried eating it cold straight from the fridge to tone down the sweetness, but it was still overwhelming. Overall, the combination of the service and the cake not tasting as good as before made this visit disappointing.

Turns out all those jaw-dropping Yelp cakes are basically VIP-only.... most are special order, so the display case was giving more "snack break" than "dessert heaven." The place is tiny, and with about 10 kids running a full-volume chaos baking convention, the vibe was less cozy bakery and more "Chuck E. Cheese but with aprons and a Kitchen Aid." Not exactly the peaceful, sugar-filled escape I had imagined. I grabbed a few items anyway, slightly disappointed about the limited options and the unexpected kid frenzy. But plot twist... once we got home, the pastries actually slapped!!! My kids were fully impressed and overruled my disappointment, bumping this place from a "meh" to a "fine, I guess you're good. They were extremely happy with the mini ube cake.
