What's really disappointing is that I could tell it was supposed to be good. The space and ambiance are absolutely gorgeous. Unfortunately our server was having maybe her worst day ever and nobody else that worked there wanted to help her out or make sure the customers were taken care of.
We sat outside to enjoy the nice view and a summer day that wasn't stifling hot. After sitting there about 20 minutes our super friendly server came by to take our drink orders and apologize for how long it took her to stop by. We had plenty of time to peruse the menu, so we went ahead and placed our food order too. She said she'd be right back with chips and salsa. After taking our order, she stopped by her other outdoor tables, apologizing profusely for how long things were taking.
Several minutes later, she stopped by her other tables and eventually to ours as well with drinks and chips and salsa. Unfortunately, most of the salsa had spilled out of the bowl so we were left with a 1/2 bowl of salsa. She noticed this and said she'd be right back with more. She never came back with the salsa. Or napkins. Or drink refills. We were starving so dived right into the chips and salsa. It was over pretty soon, since there wasn't much to begin with. Then we sat and waited. And waited. And waited. The only upside to this really long wait was I got to know my dining companion better. Maybe she intentionally ignored us so we could get to know each other better?
Eventually, I needed a water refill. My friend offered me his water but I was optimistic that she would be back out soon. The ice melted and I drank that too. Still no server. My friend had to actually get up and go to the bar for a refill. I thought for sure that would prompt a stop-by, but nope. After a while, someone delivered our food. It looked like it had been sitting under a heat lamp for a while. I asked the runner if we could get some silverware and he jokingly said "nope", which would have been funny if we hadn't been ignored for so long. Also if the silverware came out immediately after. As it was, it took a couple minutes, but our regular server returned with the utensils, full of smiles and apologies.
I ordered the Mexican Benedict, which was a poached egg upon a friend avocado, with a tomato remoulade , served with a bacon flauta and black beans. While I was waiting for my utensils, I started on the flauta since that can be eaten with my hands. It may have had bacon in it, but all I saw was rice. A little carb-on-carb action, okay. Once I got a fork, I dove right in! I was immediately hit with the strong taste of vinegar from the eggs. I understand that eggs need to be poached with a little bit of something acidic, but this was overwhelming! The eggs were cooked through, the yolk was completely hard. The oil from frying the avocado had soaked through the breading, probably from sitting around too long, and it was a greasy, mushy mess. In scraping away the mushiest part of the batter, I saw my avo had lots of brown spots, which is probably why it didn't taste all that great.
I am very grateful that my dining companion is interesting and entertaining. Overall, we were there for close to 2 hours, which is a really long time for lunch for 2. I cannot blame the server, she seemed to be doing her best. While El Monumento is great in concept, the whole restaurant seems to be severely lacking in execution. If this is what dining in Georgetown is all about, I think I'll stick to Austin. read more
