I only gave them 3 of 5 stars, but El Monumento is a whisper away from 5 of 5 stars. It is beautiful Spanish-Mexican fusion restaurant on the South San Gabriel river in Georgetown (overlooking Blue Hole for you old school Georgetown types). We went on the advice of friends so we had high hopes. We went in the afternoon, but I could see this place being a lively night spot. There was a nice bar separated from the dining room by a beautiful courtyard and a large deck that overlooked the river.
The waitress admitted she was new, but was attentve and friendly without being pushy. AND, she kept my water glass filled.
First up was the chips and salsa with 2 different kinds of salsa. A chilled salsa that was a bit one note. All tomato. Where was the onion and garlic? Where was the heat and cilantro? And, for the love of god, where was the SALT. The second salsa was a warm roasted tomato salsa. It had a lot more body than the first, but was sweet almost like a pasta sauce. In fact, put it over some fresh pasta, add some fresh basil and some grated parmigiana and I would order it any day. But on a tortilla chip,...meh. Seeing as how the chips and salsa is how I usually rate a Tex-Mex restaurant, it was only mediocre at best. I was ready to overlook it as the menu had a lot of promise. And besides, this was a Spanish-Mexican place not Tex-Mex. Movin' on.
The menu had a nice selection of expected dishes, tacos and enchiladas and such, but also had some nice variety as well. What I really liked was there were multiple fillings for the enchiladas and multiple types of tacos and not just beef, chicken, cheese. I ordered duck tacos with green Chile and lime cream sauce. And my wife ordered short rib enchiladas. The dishes came with the traditional rice and beans but for a $1 substitution you could pick from any of their sides which were varied and sounded delicious. My wife settled on crispy green beans with sriracha aoli and sautéed kale and sweet potato. I opted for plantains and roasted Brussels sprouts. It took an $11 entrée and made it $12, but completely changed the complexion of the meal.
The duck tacos were a bit bland, but a touch of salt brightened them right up and they were the star of the show for me. I did find a rather large piece of plastic film in the mashed avocado. Hey, it happens (but you only get one pass, EVER). The manager and server were very apologetic and compt'ed my entrée.
The short rib filling on my wife's enchiladas was fantastic but the sauce on top was slightly thick. She had one cheese enchilada as well that was bland and pretty much a miss.
The sides were all very well prepared but, almost across the board needed salt. (What is it with these people and salt?) The kale and sweet potatoes were especially good. The wife apparently felt the same way because I got one bite and she wrapped her arm around it like she was protecting her food in a prison cafeteria. The crispy green beans were perfectly cooked but the so called sriracha aoili didn't taste of either. It was sweet and had no heat. It wasn't bad, just not as billed. Out of the blue the manager offered to bring us another dip that he really enjoyed. I didn't catch the name, but it was smokey, cheesey and delicious. The Brussels sprouts were perfectly cooked and, well... I just love Brussels sprouts. The plantains, again, were perfectly cooked, but we're missing something. It was just a plain starch. I ended up dipping them in my mystery sauce and voila.
I was totally stuffed when the manager asked us if it was our first time there and told us they always comp deserts for first time guests. At the time I suspected it was a ploy to make up for the plastic in my avocado, but hey, call 'em on it when you go by there. I had churros with chocolate sauce and my wife had strawberry shortcake tres leches. The Churros were delicious, but I ended up taking them home. The Tres leches didn't have that saturated cake texture I expect, but that's the part of Tres leches I don't like, so I thought it was perfect.
Atmosphere - 5 stars
Service - 5 stars
Price $10 - 15 per entrée ( great for the quality of food)
Taste - Arggggg - only 3 stars.
El Monumento! Read this review! Fix your salsa (and make me that pasta dish). Go look up aoli online, And, for the love of god, tell your chef to walk around and whack the cooks with a bag of salt.
I will never rate a place higher than I rate the food so only 3 stars. The quality of the food is great, but it just misses in seasoning. With a few tweaks, this place will rocket to the top 5 of my favorite places to eat in Central Texas. I will definitely be back, albeit with a few packets of salt and on the lookout for the extra "ingredient" in my avocado. read more
