OMG, I am originally from Southern Cali and we have a plethora of tortillerias to choose from. Coming to Austin and having to find one was a mission in itself. After 2 years in Dripping Springs, I gave El Milagro a try.... I don't regret it! They have the best masa preparada and nixtamal (hominy) previously cleaned with cal (lime). I still had to clean the nixtamal to remove the cal; but all in all my pozole was the bomb! My tamales were so gooood. Great customer service. I have been buying chips from El Milagro for decades, by far the best chips in Austin. Light, crispy, perfect. When I bought my usual 3-lb bag a couple weeks ago, they were completely different, and not in a good way. My most recent chips are thick, bubbly, yellow and not good at all. Whoever changed the recipe (from Chicago, I guess) has made a big mistake. Unless they go back to the original recipe, they have lost my business. read more

4 years later and El Milagro is still keeping me in Hominy (aka Nixtamal) for our traditional NYD Pozole. The service is fast and friendly and they also sell all the traditional Mexican bakery items including Pan de Polvo cookies. If you make tamales, pozole, or Menudo, in addition to fresh masa and nixtamal, they have a small market inside with ingredients you will need to whip them up including corn husks, large containers of traditional seasonings (Cumin, Red Chile powder...), an assortment of bagged dried red chile, plus their flour and corn tortillas and chips. Ive been buying maza blanca for tamales for over 25 years from this place. Each year making over 500 dozens. I've known since I was a young boy to get there an hour early during the holidays which is what I did this morning waiting in the rain. I was the second customer in line and when I got to the counter and placed my order, you can imagine my surprise when the young lady behind the counter stated that they no longer sold maza Blanca quebrada para tamales. I asked her when did this take affect and she stated she didn't know and almost immediately insisted I get the pre bagged maza amarilla she had layed on the counter top in front of me, followed by others and when I placed my hand on it ,,it was cold to the touch. Turns out it was sent from their SA locale to be sold here. They're trying to make us buy there unsold from other cities and that's not right. The molinero even yelled at me from the back as well stating, "es todo que "vendemos" , gesturing for me to move on as if I were just some or any other customer for they have thousands And you know what? I most certainly will. Fiesta Tortillas is where I recommend all who wish to make tamales go and buy there masa. It's more family oriented and the young ladies there are always so kind. The only draw back is they open later in the morning at 8. That was the main reason I used El Milagro. But Never again though. Never again! Oh and it's a qtr past 7 now. I love this place. Best and cheapest tortilla's I've found in Austin. They offer a selection too. Flour tortilla enthusiasts like me might sometimes prefer a more chewy or less chewy tortilla, depending on the application. El Milagro has got us covered. They also sell fresh masa. And on certain days they fill the neighborhood with the delicious scent of deep fried corn chips. This place is CASH ONLY though. There are no ATMs nearby except at the Chevron one block away, and that one charges $2 for a withdrawal. So come prepared! read more

El Milagro "topopos" tortilla chips are my favorite chips. If you buy them at HEB or Wheatsville Co-op, they'll be $2.50 to $3 or so. If you stop by El Milagro, you can pick them up for only $2 a bag! For you calorie-counters, the "topopos" 1-lb tortilla chip bags are supposed to be 140 calories per serving with 14 servings per bag. If you don't like the thin-style tortilla chips, you can also get the thick-style tortilla chips. I think they even come in 5-lb bags. El Milagro also sells white and yellow corn tortillas, tamale wrappers, drinks, and lots of other ethnic snacks that I am unfamiliar with. El Milagro has a $5 credit card minimum. It is the bright yellow-orange building located on the Northwest quadrant of the San Marcos and 6th Street intersection. It is east of I-35. I usually find street parking along San Marcos. read more

AH! East Austin! NO! Now that that's out of the way, small storefront, park on the side street. Everything is very very generously priced. 1.95 for a pound of tortilla chips (about 140). 1.00 for 30 corn tortillas. Most everything they sell has 3 ingredients or less. Also, FRESH. If you can't brave "East of 35" or the location is a little inconvenient, they also sell the chips, at least, at pretty much every HEB I've been to in Central Austin. No cards, and checkout is a great opportunity to test your high school Spanish skills. Or pretend like you don't speak it and hear them make fun of you because you wanted your 5 cents in change back. I know I'm cheap. If you're a genuine gringo, the factory is your Mecca. Everyone should make the pilgrimage at least once to experience their entire product line. For years we have depended on El Milagro for our tamale masa. They have always been spot-on with the texture, taste and freshness. As amateur tamale-makers, we have almost-annual tamaladas. Our parents purchased from Milagro, and so the tradition continues. Milagro also sells party-size mega-bags of tostadas. If chips are leftover, you can always refresh them in the microwave or oven. They sell corn tortillas and I sometimes freeze leftover tortillas individually to use for migas or enchiladas later. If you've been to any Tex-Mex or just plain ole Mexican restaurant in Austin, you've most likely had chips and/or tortillas from this tortilleria on E 6th St. Over the past few years, new fancy gentrified stores, restaurants, and bars have sprung up around this humble store. In fact, El Milagro has had a bit of a facelift. The first time I visited this shop was over ten years ago with a co-worker while preparing for a work-related holiday party. I was blown away. I had no idea that those bags of chips I saw in the store had come from this (at the time) small storefront. The difference was, here the chips were hot, fresh, and unbroken. This is THE place to buy tortilla chips and tortillas in Austin. They distribute their goods to HEB, however you must(!) make the special trip here. Big difference; completely worth it. El Milagro is one of those core businesses that lends so generously to our rich Tex-Mex culture in Austin. They are an authentic Tortillaria - definitely Austin's best. After all, we Austinites not only need good chips, but we demand them. And El Milagro proudly delivers, chip after chip, tortilla after tortilla, year after year. From my experiences, everything they make is as good as it gets (tradition, quality, freshness, flavor), but their tortilla chips are just plain addictive. They are not greasy nor are they salty, they taste so fresh and delicious that you just have to eat another and another and... I don't buy any other brand, ever. I love to have them plain, with salsa, chili con queso, guacamole, bean dip, as nachos, or just to soak up the cheese and gravies of a good Tex-Mex meal. For that final touch of perfection, warm them quickly in the oven spread evenly on a cookie sheet (broil for a minute or two, keep an eye on them, they will warm quickly) and then grind a little sea salt on top just before serving. This is making me hungry just thinking about all of the good memories... and all over a simple little corn tortilla chip. They are that good. There is simply no comparison between El Milagro tortilla chips and any other competing brand you will find at the grocery store. We're fortunate to be able to buy these chips at our local HEB stores, or you can stop by their shop on E. 6th and buy directly from El Milagro. Many of our best local Tex-Mex restaurants serve El Milagro chips - and for those who serve some other store bought brand, SHAME ON YOU, and may I kindly suggest that you switch to El Milagro tortilla chips? If you go to the store, they have two kinds of flour tortillas (or at least last time I was there): with and without preservatives.
