Had a great experience. Felt like I was in Mexico, the decor was very authentic, there was a little grocery shop in the back, and the owners little girl was around having fun. The food was amazing. Started with guacamole and chips then we both had the weekend special which was bierra beef fried tacos. The sauces that came with the entree were all very tasty. We were both super full after our meal. We were there celebrating a birthday and at the end of the meal they brought out a piece of cake and a couple of sombrero's for us, very fun and the cake was delicious. All said I would definitely recommend visiting this restaurant for some authentic Mexican food. The price is very affordable and the staff is awesome. I will for sure be back. read more

What a colourful place! I joined some friends here for Taco Tuesday a few weeks ago, and did not know what to expect. I ordered off of a special Taco Tuesday menu, which has a good selection of beef, chicken, pork, and vegetarian tacos. I was happy with all of my selections, but was especially blown away by the potato ones. It was so flavourful. I would get a plate of those in an instant. Decided to come here after seeing their taco Tuesday deals on Tik Tok. Only $2 a taco! We arrived around 1pm right around lunch rush. A server came and sat us ASAP, brought us some menus. We started off with 2 bulldogs and they were great, no complaints $12.99 each. We ordered 12 tacos between two of us and it was more than enough. I highly recommend the Pastor and Rajas... super flavorful. They do bring you nice tray of 6 different hot sauces all great. Customer service was prompt, server wasn't overly friendly but he wasn't rude, he was just super busy serving alone. The place itself is clean and very very bright with a ton of Spanish art work on the tables and chairs. In the back where the cash register they seemed to have a little store to buy Spanish food products. Highly recommend taco Tuesday, can't speak to the regular menu. read more

We ordered takeout from El Mariachi last week for the first time and I would definitely like to come back and try them in person in the future. They don't have many vegetarian options but the two veggie tacos were great. My favourite was the Rajas con Elote taco which comes with strips of poblano peppers and corn. We also enjoyed the Champinones al Ajillo taco which was filled with sauteed mushrooms. They also have a small latin grocery space in the entrance which we will definitely check out next time we need some of the ingredients they carry. read more

Service was exceptionally slow though, and our group got strong pushback when we asked to split the bill - a pretty commonly accepted practice in restaurants nowadays. I dunno if their POS is just outdated, or the staff was just lazy, but they really didn't want to do it. Restaurants get one chance to impress, and while it wasn't a bad experience de by far, it wasn't great either. NEVER AGAIN!! My daughter took me there for my birthday last night and what a mistake! The service was horrible! Ordered 4 margaritas and the sign posted said margaritas were on for $5.99, we only got 2. They didn't even tell us they were out of watermelon, they just didn't bring them! The strawberry margarita was the only good thing about this place! So we ordered 3 more for $5.99 as the sign says. Waited over an hour for the smallest, worst flavoured tacos EVER! Ate, and still never got the 3 margaritas! We got them AFTER we were done eating and ready to leave! Get the bill and she charged $9.99 for the the margaritas. When I pointed out the sign at the entrance, clear as day, posting $5.99 margaritas! And all she said was sorry, that's a mistake! Never offered to honour the posted price! We went here the day that COVID restrictions eased, so I am giving them the benefit of the doubt. First of all it was absolutely FREEZING inside. So much so everyone was wearing coats including the staff. I caught a chill even though I ordered soup and tea to start. Think about heating the building the day before you open to make your guests comfortable. Even though we were the only couple in there except two guys who were done eating the food was really, really, slow. The soup was tasty but lukewarm. The tacos we had (my husband had mixed ones - beef and pork and I had fish) were okay but not worth the price or the wait. I found my batter was a good texture but lacked flavour. The only thing that was amazing was their selection of hot sauces and the really cute atmosphere that we couldn't enjoy because of the cold. The sever was sweet but young and inexperienced and had trouble carrying even the tea. I wouldn't rush here anytime soon. I've ordered take out a few times and everything is small portions and way overpriced; I ordered tacos and they were the little tortillas it looked like samples instead of a meal. the Torta I ordered was served on a small ciabatta bun. They charge like 16$ for a tiny poorly assembled Torta. This is not good Mexican food go to Mexico Lindo on the south side for real Mexican food. It's worth the drive. The prices here are also very reasonable, and quite big portions so you can have quite the meal on budget... A quick note the pazole which is a major amazing soup is only available on weekends. My second trip to El Mariachi did not disappoint. Both times I've left craving the complex flavours of their traditional fare. Portions are generous !!! Your favourite aunt could be the in house chef, if your aunt were one heck of a Mexican cook, at El Mariachi the owner infuses love and spice into each dish. Her AZTEC SOUP & POZOLE (pozole only available on weekends) are some of the best the city has to offer. TRYIT TRYIT! The Hichata, a refreshing spiced drink is fantastic too! The restaurant itself is very colourful with art adorning every surface. Loud music is played via the tv that got a bit distracting. Staff are very friendly, though the wait was long for food and water refills. I liked that the menu had things I haven't tried in Edmonton yet, and our server was very helpful in answering our questions. It's not a crazy big menu, but there are plenty of options. A tray of various hot sauces of different spice levels come to each table after you order. We started with the potato appetizer - a large baked potato topped with cheese and your choice of meat (ground beef, chicken or pulled pork), served with a tiny cup of pico de gallo and tortilla chips. So simple and yet so delicious. The potato was fluffy and when mixed together with all the toppings and a splash of hot sauce, it all worked perfectly on a crunchy chip. I'd go back for this alone and eat this as a lunch. For meals, we tried their tacos with pork - 4 small ones to an order. I found these too be too messy - the pork had a lot of liquid that dripped everywhere. The flavour was good, but bordered on a bit too salty. We also ordered a hot stone bowl that came filled with shrimp, chicken and steak over roasted peppers/veg and cheese. This was another dish I've never had before, but I found it to be very tart. To accompany this, two tiny portions of rice and beans came out. (Tiny. I'm talking small tea cups you get at Asian restaurants. Literally a couple forkfuls. I am Asian. I need more rice than that!!) We ended with flan - it came in a plastic pie container, so I'm assuming they are pre-packaged for ease. A delicious caramel flavour, but very very dense - almost like a cheesecake. Overall, I think it's a good addition to the Mexican scene for Edmonton. I like that you can get things that aren't served elsewhere that I've seen, though a bit quicker in service and a few tweaks with food are still needed. read more

Last week, El Mariachi opened its doors alongside the shops of 124 St. Yesterday was their grand opening, a celebration of Latin foods and free tacos for all who came between 4pm and 8pm! I was merely doing my usual scan of #yegfood on social media when I came across a tweet promoting the event. Perfect timing too, I had a dinner with my friend Alex in two hours time in the downtown area. A taco can't hurt right? Now who to drag with me... who likes free food... Joshua! So we drove down to the area to make it to the 5pm crowd. The shop is small, lined with three rows of various Latin products and two coolers in the back. Ohhh, sopes! Looks exactly like the ones Joe and I got at Hawkers Market. I arrived earlier than Josh to quickly scope out the place. When I hit the chips section, I nearly jumped for joy. My last trip in January was to Cancun and I frequented plenty gas stations to stock up on Crujitos, a spicy, cheesy spiral, similar to our cheese puffs here. I have a slight addiction to chips, so when I saw their selection of spicy, lime-y flavours, ahhhh swoon. I will be back to try all of you! The shelves were filled with various sauces and spices. A whole section for salsas, re-fried beans, and the most interesting of all, mole! Perhaps I don't delve into the ethnic foods section of the grocery stores enough, but I have never seen mole in a can or jar before. I can ease my way into cooking Mexican food now but using these sauces! I thought the chips section was impressive... then I saw dried chili. Bags and bags of various kinds of dried chili. Oh, this is a dangerous section for me. I suspect that if I ever want to make sauces from scratch for Mexican night, I will be using these bad boys. There was a taco station set up, seven (!) different kinds. A plate was for two tacos, although I'm sure if I asked we could have tried them all. I knew I was only able to take a bite of each taco for fear of being too full for dinner in an hour, which is where my friend Josh comes in. He's a big guy and he will eat anything I can't finish. What we ended up with: pork carnitas (braised pork shoulder), rajas con creme (roasted poblano peppers with creamed corn), chorizo (spicy pork sausage), and pork (I think?) in a mole sauce. A separate table showcased all types of salsa, hot sauces, and guacamole to add to your liking. They were amazing. Definitely no Tres Carnales, but felt like more like home cooked, comfort food. My favourite was the rajas con creme, something entirely new to me. Creamy, sweet from the corn, heat from the peppers, whoa! Their tortillas were thicker than what I'm use to, although preferable than two layered thin tortillas that some restaurants serve. Which brings me to my last question. Who made these tacos? El Mariacha is a Latin product shop, rather than a restaurant. Asking the lady who served our tacos, she replied that they made it themselves. She pointed to a back room and told us that eventually it will become a small eat in/take out restaurant serving up exactly what we were eating. Hot tamale, I'm excited! The restaurant portion is expected to open next month, but judging from the completely empty back room, I think it could take longer. Can't wait to try more tacos! Great addition to 124 St and not too far from the main hub of restaurants and shops closer to Duchess. Until my next visit, I've got Crujitos chips to slowly ration out and savour (can't feed the addiction too quickly!), and picked up a churro kit. Churros! I finally tried this neighborhood joint and I loved it! I got the tostadas (a crispy tortilla topped with chicken, lettuce, cheese and sour cream) and they were delicious! And a huge portion for only $9!! My friend ordered the fish tacos, and they were also great (4 for $12). They came with pico de gallo and lettuce, and the fish was breaded and perfectly fried - my only complaint would be the menu didn't specify what toppings each type of taco would come with. Also, most tacos allow you to mix and match, but the fish and shrimp don't (not really an inconvenience, as the fish tacos were delicious). The food is fresh and fast. Not the most flavourful of dishes, but they bring six different hot sauces for you to add the flavour you like which I love!!! read more

I love this place. I've been twice and ordered tacos (pork and pineapple - so yum!) and enchildes verdes. Both were fresh, delicious and satisfying. There is a small grocery store at the back of the restaurant and you can buy fresh tortillas, sausage and their salsa - they have a green one that kind of looks like mustard - it is one of the most delicious things I've ever tasted and I'm so happy I can take it home! The decor is really cool, the prices are very reasonable and there are little kids hanging around so it has that nice family business vibe you rarely get anymore. Exit door has broken knob and they just watched people try and try again but didn't fix. My friends and I stumbled upon this place when we were volunteering close by. Having traveled to Latin America, they were happy to see many products that they were familiar with and couldn't find anywhere else in the city. The snack section has some chips in different flavours including some HOT ones! If you are looking for salsas, lots can be found here, and cool candy too. The gentleman working there gave us a sample of drink mix that you could buy there. In the back, there was a gathering of people enjoying a meal together. It seemed like they were enjoying good food and company with friends and family. My friend asked about buying hot fresh food and you can order food to go. We went back after our volunteer shift and she ordered food for dinner. This is a great place for those who might be missing a taste of home or from their travels. I love Mexican food, so when a customer asked me to join him here for a work lunch I was super excited. Apparently this used to be a retail store only selling Mexican groceries and goods (the store is still in the back and is super cool) and recently added the restaurant portion. I ordered the mole chicken enchiladas and I'm pretty sure my order was mixed up somehow... there wasn't a hint of mole flavouring or colouring. The meal was okay, it was fresh and relatively tasty but I couldn't get past my disappointment of getting regular chicken enchiladas instead of mole (I am never the guy that would complain or correct, they are a small business trying to make it so I'll eat what I get). Served with side beans and rice, and tortilla chips and salsa to start... the best part here was the homemade hot sauces they bring out... quite the assortment of deliciousness if you are a hot sauce person too. I'm always on the lookout for good Mexican food places as Edmonton has a dearth of them, at least good ones. I'd heard and read good things about El Mariachi, and frankly I wonder how others have praised it given my experience tonight. Full disclosure, the order was done via Skip The Dishes so some of this may be their fault, rather than the restaurant's, but the delivery came from literally 6 blocks away so I think both should share blame. I ordered the Choriqueso (which was cold and came as a congealed block of cheese, which was very difficult to portion and eat and was frankly not worth anywhere near the $14 they charge for it) and Enfrijoladas. The enchiladas were ordered without onions (preference, not allergy) and while indeed they held the onions, there was an avocado/guacamole component included which (a) was NOT listed in the description, and, since I dislike avocado, (b) NOT desired, also, (c) not included on the Enchiladas Verdes ordered as well. Yet it was there. I can't stand when things aren't listed in the description yet still show up on the plate. The enchiladas themselves tasted decent, but were dry (the bean "sauce" was thin and insufficient, and the chicken inside was also dry) and not easy to eat - but easier than the Choriqueso which was a block of salty cheese, basically, and not remotely appetizing. I can't give a one-star review, that's too harsh, but despite the great remarks from others and the close proximity of the restaurant, I don't foresee a future visit. Quite disappointed. read more

Great authentic Mexican food and friendly attentive staff. Having this amazing place close to home is both a blessing and a curse. We had burritos last time we were in. Made with steak, and without beans or rice, I was pleasantly surprised. The chef makes a variety of salsa (hot sauces) of various strengths and flavors and I tried them all. The guacamole is awesome As we like to practice our Spanish, it's fun also to eat here and converse with the staff who play along. We buy their Pico de gallo ahead of time for parties we throw and now that I know they sell their salsa, I'll be buying that more often too. Try them out. Dropped in for a quick lunch... wow the decor is fantastic! They spared no effort to give this quaint little spot a real Mexican feel. The service was fantastic and the atmosphere with a few fellow patrons speaking Spanish and great Mexican music playing made this just perfect for a Saturday lunch. We started with the Pambozas which we'd never had before. Pretty tasty but a little carb-o-licious for anyone into fitness (which we are). We enjoyed the regular beef tacos which were truly awesome... flavourful and tender. Second to none. We also had the chicken enchiladas which also... amazing flavour, texture and perfect portions. Generally good food, and good avacado pie when they have it, but when I was there last, they had Spanish opera on, and in the back room some kid was watching Spanish lazy town on full volume, and it was very overwhelming. Not to mention that the milk was kept in a jug on the counter, and it was the middle of the summer, so the milk was warm and sour. With little chunks in it. Ok if i could give this place 6 stars I would because I don't know a place that deserves it more. If you have not had a burrito from this place let me sum it up for you in four words: out of this world. The mix of the meat, pico de gallo and avocado creates a symphony of flavours you aren't ready for. Also one of the only places that the burrito has a sufficient circumference. Great ambiance. Felt very authentic even down to the grocery store at the back. I was greeted quickly by the server and ordered a coffee. This came with totopos and a creamy hot sauce which was too hot for me but I know others will love it. Then I ordered some guacamole. The guacamole was about 50% tomato and possibly a store-bought avocado spread. I don't hold this against anyone in Alberta because it's hard to find a decent avocado but maybe hold back some of the tomato -otherwise very good. The beef burrito took about 15 minutes and the avocado and sour cream were in the burrito when I was expecting it on the side. There was a complaint on this site about the beef in this dish but I suspect it was cooked in canola oil hence the odd flavour. No other seasonings detected so rather bland. Service was good. Sooo happy to have an authentic Mexican restaurant in our area! The hubs and I went today for cinco de mayo for the first time. We have margaritas (with a delicious peppered rim). The food was delicious and large portions for the price. The hot sauces which I believe are made in house...amazing!
