Back on the Edmonton Mexican train! (And let's face it, it's a pretty fun train to take a ride on!) This time I was excited to try Calle Mexico (which means Mexico Street), which began back in 2015 as a food truck (that still operates). They've had a couple of different restaurant locations around the city over the years but are now comfortably situated in Queen Alexandra near Whyte Avenue. You'll probably remember their place as the old Atlantic Trap & Gill Pub which closed its doors in 2018. Trading fishing nets for brightly-coloured piñatas, the space now feels like a portal to a city somewhere in Mexico. EDify Magazine named Calle Mexico Best Mexican Restaurant 2024 and I never say "no" to a delicious taco. Neither should you. Stopping in on a snowy Saturday evening (like I did) is highly advisable, because who doesn't want to pretend that they've left on a Mexican vacation for a little while? The inside of the restaurant is quite spacious and the decor feels authentically Mexican without going too far. From the gorgeous aforementioned many-pointed piñatas adorning the ceiling to the beautiful black and white photography on the walls, the dining area feels vibrant in a grounded way. As if this is real Mexican and not just a show. The friendly (and very Spanish-speaking) staff handed us some menus upon our entry and told us to sit anywhere we wanted. We were also instructed to order our food at the counter (hostess desk?) once we were ready. One thing that I appreciated right away is that the menu isn't humongous. Lots of restaurants have insanely sprawling menus, and while choice is nice, I almost prefer a concise menu of really dialed-in plates. Quality over quantity. Once our banquete plan was made we placed our order and awaited our food (which came out so quickly!) to the sounds of energetic Mexican music. While there are cocktails and beer on the drink menu, I always favour a Horchata ($3.50) and will continue to drink these all around town. A traditional Mexican beverage made up of white rice soaked in water and then flavoured with cinnamon, the Calle Mexico version is really good! I liked how smooth and well-strained theirs is because this drink can sometimes be quite gritty in other restaurants. It's sweet, nutty, and milky but also drinkable and refreshing. Plus they served a really big cup of it! I liked this horchata a whole lot. Next, we felt that it was prudent to order some Chips and Salsa (Delicious homemade salsa & chips - $8.50) because these are just a good time to have on the table. All good Mexican restaurants make their own tortilla chips in-house and Calle Mexico is no exception. It makes a massive difference in quality and taste! Frankly, I wouldn't trust a "Mexican restaurant" that doesn't make their own chips. These ones were very good! Nicely crispy and salted, they tasted very fresh. The big bowl of salsa was also impossibly fresh but mild in flavour - no spice. However, if you are looking for some heat Calle Mexico has got you! There's an entire salsa bar that customers are free to visit at their leisure! With four types to choose from; Guacamole (mild), Salsa Verde (medium), Roasted Peppers (medium), and Roasted Habanero (very spicy), we grabbed samples of each one! My favourite was probably the roasted peppers one, which had great flavour and a decent amount of heat. The roasted habanero one was very spicy as promised!! You could really taste that it was made with real concentrated dried and roasted peppers. High on our list of things to try was The Famous "Calle Mexico" Tostadas (Crispy tortillas topped with beans, chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, radish, sour cream, feta cheese and avocado - $16.00). They're famous! I can see why these are famous because they were the best thing that we ate! Crispy crunchy tortillas topped with a mountain of fresh ingredients, there was nothing not to love! (Except for the fact that tostadas are notoriously difficult to eat. Do they explode into pieces after the first bite for everyone? Just me?) The chicken was especially tender and delicious and I liked the nice, perfectly ripe slices of avocado on top. So much freshness and so much flavour! These tostadas truly represent what Calle Mexico is all about. There are eight different tacos to choose from on the menu and it seemed that picking one to try was an important part of our dining experience. Sure, they've got chicken, pork, beef, and even fish. But I'm always more curious about the unique options. Beef Tongue (Lengua) Tacos (Tender shredded beef tongue topped with cilantro and onion - $18.00) fit the bill! This is what we're talking about when we say "nose to tail" cuisine, isn't it? The pieces of meat were very tender and not at all offensive (in case that's what you were expecting). I decided to give this another try as the first time around I ordered take out and my food was not the greatest. This time I ate at the restaurant. I was very surprised to see that it was fairly empty on a Friday night (not sure if this is the norm). Despite that they had the music going on full blast. The restaurant is fully decorated with Mexican decor. I noticed that they also had a large party room with a stage and a dance floor. I'm guessing this is used for private bookings. The service is very casual. Once you are ready to order you go up to the front to put in your order and pay. A staff member will deliver the food to your table. Although the staff were very kind and friendly, we did notice that once the food arrived, no one came by to check on us. We were never once offered a water refill nor were our empty dishes cleared even though we had long finished our meal. I ordered the fish tacos and our table got salsa and guacamole to share. The guacamole was very fresh and tasty, we all enjoyed it. The salsa was watery so we didn't enjoy it as much. The chips were delicious but a little over baked. The tacos were absolutely delicious and I would get them again. I added some of the fixings from their toppings bar which made it even better. The portions are great for the price. 4 tacos for $17! Came here on cinco de mayo and it was busy!!! First time back post-pandemic and the tacos were pretty good. You could see that the kitchen was busy and the staff too as every table was full and there was a massive line up to order. So I didn't know how it all worked but when you enter, you wait to be seated. Once seated you can take a look at the menu but to order you have to go back up to the front and stand in line to order and pay for your food. I don't know if that's the regular procedure or if that's just how they did it for cinco de mayo. We ordered a few different tacos, michelada, and bulldogs. I wanted to like this restaurant and I wanted to like the tongue tortillas. I liked the cheerful Mexican festival feel of the place when we walked in and I was prepared to overlook the tacky decor and the discount warehouse furniture. Reading the reviews that applaud the authenticity of the Mexican food, though, I've decided that authentic Mexican food isn't for me. The food was served on plastic plates, something else I was prepared to overlook. But the napkins served in open wire containers on the table, obviously dribbled on by past customers kind of put me off my food. During this time when people are still dying of COVID, one would expect a more attentive attitude to hygiene. I needed a napkin to deal with the loosely dressed tortillas that kept losing the filling. So with trepidation, I said a prayer and used a couple from the side that looked cleanest. The tongue was fine but somewhat overwhelmed by the raw yellow onions and cilantro that it came with. I know it's not authentic, but cheese would have perked the tortillas up considerably. I've eaten here three times. All three times I've had the enchiladas. I can't get enough. My husband was disappointed in his dishes. A torta with a couple of cut up hot dogs and the tongue tacos. Sadly, the salsa bar is gone due to recent pandemic protocols. We like the restaurant patio where we can eat at a safe distance. The Margarita is made with tequila and orange juice instead of Triple Sec. It's still OK. You can order Mexican beers, except Bohemia. For some reason we can't get that here. Food here is always consistently good. As it was my friend's belated birthday, I suggested we go for a late lunch. Restaurant was bright, clean and smelled of everything wonderful to eat. So we ordered guac & chips as well as 2 different tacos types - chicken & fish. She decided on the lime Margarita and I had the guva drink. All items were enjoyed and we had fun experimenting with the spiciness levels of the hot sauces. A nice little perk was that they played a happy birthday song for her too! I haven't gone to Calle Mexico for awhile so a few things have changed since I was there last. You need to order up front and pay at that time before sitting down. When I'm ordering drinks and food, I have no idea if I'll want more of something or even dessert. So I feel this process focuses more on food to go (like their food trucks which is good if that's what you have in mind) vs sitting down to enjoy the atmosphere & those that are with you in the restaurant. We had mentioned we'd be sharing the tacos when we ordered, so it was a bit weird that we had to ask about forks, plates, etc. after the food arrived. All cutlery, napkins and sauces are up at the front and it's on you too grab them. We didn't know this until we had asked for them. Again, making it feel like we were the odd ones to dine in, even though there was others there eating too. Nothing too drastic, as many restaurants have shifted that way during the pandemic. However, I think if I'm going to summon the little social energy I have these days to enjoy a meal in a restaurant, I'd like to be fully served. Located close to Whyte avenue this Mexican restaurant is pretty good. The space is big and the staff is nice. Ordering is easy and the menu is simple. The menu is very meat focused which is kinda of sad for me as a vegetarian/vegan. I ordered the veggie quesadilla which was pretty good. It came with a small salad and small bit of rice. Was craving tacos super bad on a Tuesday and I begged my boyfriend to take me to their new location on the southside so I could get my fix. The outside is a little grungy but inside, the place is very nicely decorated and reminded me of Mexico! We ordered to go through skip and saw that on Tuesdays you get 1 free extra taco. Unfortunately when we opened our tacos that we ordered, we didn't get the free extra taco :( (might've just been because we ordered on skip) BUT the Al Pastor tacos were BOOOOOOMB. Super comparable, if not better than the authentic ones I've had in Mexico. I don't usually like pineapple at all, but with the al pastor it was a perfect match to cut the flavour of the pork with the sweetness of the roasted pineapple. The salsa that they give you in the containers is also used spicy. I love the salsa verde, it gives a nice kick without it being unbearably numbing. We did have to pay extra for pico de gallo, and the containers they come in were only 2oz. That would be my only complaint. Otherwise, I'm in love with this place already. First time visiting Calle Mexico and I loved their new patio at the south side location! Close to Whyte Ave, it's the perfect spot for a summer day. At this location you order at the front desk and they will bring your food out to your table. We decided to try the The Famous "Calle Mexico" Tostadas, Guacamole & Chips and Pork Tacos. The Tostadas are topped with A LOT of lettuce, sour cream, and feta cheese making it a bit difficult to eat... but the flavor was very fresh and delicious. The Nacho's and Guac are probably the best that I've had in the city, you cant go wrong here! Finally, the Pork Tacos were also delicious and the meat was very tender. All of their food is exceptional, especially the Classic Tortilla Soup, Tostadas and their homemade Nacho chips. Atmosphere is bright and welcoming, as is the staff. Just a great experience. It's amazing to see more and more Latin culinary options available in Edmonton. I remember back in the day, our only options were Taco Bell and Taco Time...there would be a independently owned Mexican spot that would open but end up shutting down. Now it seems our scene has taken off, and I'm happy to report the selection is so much better than it was. Calle Mexico did not disappoint. We ordered the guac and chips, Al Pastor and Pescado tacos and the "Famous Calle Mexico" tostados. Everything was very fresh, well seasoned...we were very satisfied! Ambiance was super casual, and there is a nice patio area available as well. You place your order at the front, pay, then grab your seat. The staff were very friendly, service prompt. A bit disappointed after dining here. They were pretty short staffed but major props to the 2 fellas working very hard on the floor managing the entire restaurant. I ordered fish tacos, which included 3 for $13.99. They came out looking alittle sad, scarce guacamole on 2 and 1 of them missing it entirely (see photo). It def was thrown together hastily with pieces of cod. Food also took quite a while to come out. Overall a bland taco compared to any other taco I've had in the city.
