Came here for a friends birthday party on a Saturday night. Place was 80% full at 7PM. Reserved for 10 of us - we got a booth which was fun but really hard to people to get in and out of. Friends got the Mucho nachos and it fed 3 big-eaters. They were really happy with same. Boyfriend got the chicken quesadilla. Loved same. It was really boring in my opinion ( chicken, cheese, green peppers, onions) and not enough fillings. I got the Baja fish tacos - 10/10. Huge pieces of fish, great mayo, could have used more slaw but there wasn't room with how big the fish pieces were! Loved the little circle chips it comes with. Corn salsa was fine but not something I would order. I also got a virgin margarita (strawberry banana) as everyone else was getting bulldogs (deal of the day). For $5 it was very reasonably priced and it was delicious! Server was super friendly and brought us pitchers of water and came back often to get drink refills. Everyone loved they're bulldogs (drinks). Womans bathroom has 2 stalls. Doors are awkward but kind of cool. After many years of going to Julio's we will never go back. Matthew, the person in charge was very arrogant and rude. He said we wouldn't be served because of a comment my husband made to a server but wouldn't tell us what the comment was. Matthew was on a power trip, must have been recently put in charge! Had a great experience at Julio's Barrio! The portions were generous and the service was impressively quick. Our waitress was super friendly and even gave us some great local recommendations for things to do in the area, which was a nice touch. I ordered the quesadillas--very filling and satisfying. The ambiance overall was really pleasant, but my favorite part was surprisingly the staircase area leading down to the bathrooms--it has a cool vintage/neon vibe and unique character. Very predatory restaurant. I saw their Taco Tuesday day special and came with my girlfriend, where they claimed to have a special for $3.95 per taco, instead of $5. This is not an amazing special, but we did not mind. We came in, got seated and asked for a booth seat, which they provided, and we were very satisfied at the start. What we didn't know is they make you order a drink, which wasn't written on their website, so my girlfriend ordered a drink and we ordered 8 tacos to share. The server we got was very condescending and told us that both of us need a drink, and that we aren't allowed to share tacos, stating: "If you want to take part in the Taco Tuesday special, two people need to order drinks". It's none of your business what we do with our food, and if you can't afford serving $3.95 for each taco, DON'T HAVE THIS SPECIAL. I didn't want to cause issues, especially since it was a date night, so I was coerced into ordering an extra iced tea I did not want and it ended up going to waste. Overall, it started off good, but the server was extremely rude, and the taco tuesday special was deceptively predatory. The food was good but definetely not worth the horrible experience. Julio's Barrio is an Edmonton staple! Came in for taco Tuesday and they did not disappoint! Had the chips and salsa to start and they are perfect for anyone needing to get that salt fix in! I got the chicken tacos and they were FULL of flavour. For sides I got the refried beans and Mexican rice and the tomato's on the rice gave them a nice fresh touch. Overall 4/5. Only complaint is the waitress brought out all my food at once so I felt a bit rushed and couldn't take my time to enjoy everything. She was very pleasant though. read more

Good ol fashion Julio's. Classic in Edmonton. I've been here many many times and stopped by today for lunch. The hostess seated us immediately inside, sadly the patio wasn't available. From a business stand point I notice they had a lot of families and kids seated outside (I'm alllll for family restaurant FYI!) I think for a Friday though the patio should be reserved for people looking to have drinks and spend money on alcohol who want to sit outside and enjoy the sun. Also the menu is outdated and the inside could do for a overhaul. I ordered the fish tacos ($18)- they were decent. They come with 3 tacos topped with an avocado dressing and mango salsa, fried rice and beans. The portions are great. The only thing I really didn't like were the taco shells tasted like hard cooked ol El Paso shells. I ended up scooping out the taco filling onto my rice and beans and eating it that way. We also ordered the Mexican Caesar salad with shrimp, it was a very large serving, I'd give it a 2/5 as the salad tasted a bit soggy. We ordered two slush margaritas and they came out great. It has taken me a number of days to finally be able to write this review. Because I am SO MAD at this restaurant. Here is a run down 1. Walk in and immediately misgendered (Hiiiiii Laaaaadies) 2. Seated at a table that is so small and cluttered that it was a hassle the entire time to juggle things on the table. 3. Misgendered by the service staff even after being corrected 4. Informed service staff that I am Celiac and needed gluten free. As my food was being brought, they literally said, here is your gluten free meal, then gave me wheat flour tortillas. At first I was excited, I thought they were the best gf tortillas I had ever felt - luckily I got them to double check at this point because I would have been SO VIOLENTLY ILL had I eaten them 5. Servers are SO apologetic, but also super rude - like it was my fault for having an allergy. So at first they do nothing and I say, I don't need a discount but I really want you to understand what happens to me when I get poisoned. So, I start to explain to him and he rushes me through and obviously DOES NOT CARE. He returns in a few minutes and informs me that because of the error in serving me poison he "had to work really hard with their manager and was able to get me 20% off" - how lucky for me - what I really wanted was reassurance that you give a shit and that you won't poison anyone else. But THEN when the bill came, they gave me a measly four dollars off - about 10%. 6. The food itself was terrible - bagged guacamole, bland flavourless food. My friend ordered the chicken not spiced and no tomato, but it came spiced and literally topped with loads of tomatoes. 7. The Margaritas are just WAY too over sweet it was gross. 8. The chairs (that were barely big enough to fit me - I am a little over weight, but not huge) had nails sticking out of them and ripped my friends shirt. 9. I literally put my fork down for my last bite and the waiter was RIGHT THERE asking if I would like the bill. Not once did they ask if we want more drinks, dessert, NOTHING. This was the worst service I have ever received at a restaurant. We were polite, even when almost poisoned. It wasn't a case of us being rude so the staff being rude back. I was misgendered the entire time, almost poisoned, clothes were ruined, felt rushed and service was terrible - and all for a pretty meh meal and drink that was grossly over-priced. I have been going to this place for many years and I have always enjoyed the atmosphere, food and drinks. If it's a nice summer day, it may be very busy and you may have to wait for a while to get in. Waiting time has been up to an hour for me. Especially if you would like to go to the patio. Parking may be a little tricky since it's on Whyte Ave. The service is pretty good and the staff is polite, friendly and helpful. I like the general atmosphere. The drinks are pretty good. My usual choice is the original bulldog. I like the food as well and have always enjoyed the quality of the food. My usual choice is Julio's platter but I have tried their fish tacos and they are pretty good as well. My friend and I were wandering Whyte Ave and usually stop in here. Glad we did. The weather was perfect and we got a seat on the patio. It was pretty busy but it was also Friday at noon which is to be expected. We ordered a pitcher of margaritas and shared the fish tacos. Holy beat fish tacos I have ever had. The best balance of flavours. It was spicy and crunch and fresh. We almost ordered another one....but ordered a second pitcher of margaritas. I love the patio here. Julio's Barrio is an establishment that I used to frequent all the time in my 20s. It was the perfect place to grab dinner before heading out for a debaucherous night on Whyte Ave. If you were able to score a coveted patio table (directly on the sidewalk) there was no finer people-watching around. Now in my late 30s, I was very curious to see how this place holds up as an actual restaurant now that my wild bar-star days are long behind me. VUE Weekly voted that Julio's Barrio had the #1 Best Nachos 2018 and I don't believe that I'd ever tried the nachos. There's a first time for everything! Julio's has been around for a long time. I believe that they used to have a location in Calgary as well but now only the Edmonton restaurant remains. You'll find them right smack-dab in the middle of Whyte Ave in Old Strathcona, right in the middle of all of the action. It's a bit of a party restaurant - which is fun - but it certainly attracts a younger crowd (that used to be me). The space is quite huge and every time that I walk in I am met with tequila flashbacks. However, the decor and overall atmosphere is very well executed. The space is ridiculously vibrant with structural elements that play into the theme. You will never run out of things to look at; from the hanging star lanterns, to cacti and sombreros everywhere, to thematic murals. It's a lot but it's a good over-abundance. It really feels like you're visiting someplace that has fully committed and it's a lot of fun. Of course the Latin music is pumping and the room is forever noisy and buzzing - it's all a part of the experience. The servers are friendly (and are almost certainly university students) and I was seated at a high-top table that provided an excellent view of the restaurant's activity. Julio's is all about the boozy beverages. They are known for their margaritas, Mexican cervezas (they also make micheladas), and of course tequila. But most famous of all are the bulldogs. I'm not sure who invented these things but they're pretty wild. Julio's serves eight different types and each one involves a double margarita and a cerveza... 'Cause you know, if you can't decide what to drink you should just mix it all together. I ordered The Original Bulldog (1 bottle of Coronita, 1.5oz tequila, 1/2oz triple sec, lime slush - $13.95) for a straight-up classic. When it comes to your table the server will upturn the beer into the margarita right in front of you. The beer actually stays suspended upside-down in the bottle until you lift the beer, allowing both beverages to combine. You know that this huge drink is going to set you up real nice for the rest of the evening. And it's actually pretty delicious! I'm not much of a beer drinker myself but this combination works for me. I like that you can taste a little bit of beer while you're enjoying a slushy margarita. This drink is a bit of a rite of passage. It's one of those things that's just crazy enough to work. If this beverage doesn't get you into the vibe of the restaurant, nothing will. While Julio's claims to be a Mexican restaurant, I would actually classify it more as a Tex-Mex place. Many of the foods offered are not incredibly authentic and it's certainly more of an American take on Mexican food. But they do make all of the classics that you know and love. My staple used to be the enchiladas. But of course you'll also find tacos and fajitas (the kind that come to your table all sizzling). However, on this visit I zeroed in on the Mucho Macho Nachos (Warm nacho chips piled high with a half pound of shredded cheese, green peppers, onions, jalapenos, tomatoes and black olives. Served with Julio's salsa and sour cream on the side - $19.25) because they are supposed to be good and I really don't think that I've ever had them. We also added guacamole for $3. These are supposed to feed 3-5 amigos but my husband and I (RE: 2 amigos) were fully intending to crush the entire thing like champions. Which we did, with minimal effort. Julio's also makes six different types of signature salsas and the nachos came with two of them; Julio's Salsa and Roasted Chipotle Salsa. At first glance these nachos are large and covered in ingredients and I can happily report that digging into them was more of the same. I liked that there were plenty of toppings to go around so that every bite was covered in something. The green peppers seemed a bit unique to me, which was nice, and I especially enjoyed the pickled jalapenos and black olives. I would have liked to see a baked bean component to fill things out even more. I was pleased with all four of the dips but felt that the amount of guacamole provided for $3 wasn't exactly a great value. But the best thing about these nachos? The cheese. There is a ton of cheese on these nachos and almost every bite was full of cheesy goodness. You can even double the cheese for an extra $6 and I can only imagine the true madness of that situation. Ah, the infamous Julios. Been here a dozen of times on my early Whyte Ave days and never once did I ever stumble onto one of these highchairs sober. This place is ALWAYS bumpin' on the weekends, packed with highschool and university students and each group with at least one bulldog on hand. Can't say I've tried anything besides a platter of nachos but luckily for me, I was recently asked "what are you feeling" my answer was "idc, anything" which to my fullest degree of regret led to this OH-SO-satisfying meal and a deeper hunger for Tres. Tuesday Lunch, not busy at all with maybe 3 tables aside from us. Greeted immediately and got sat down pretty fast. Service throughout was pretty prompt and quick. Food came out super fast as well. *This is as far as my praise will go. Stuffed Jalapenos - ($12) - Deep fried jalapenos stuffed with cheese with salsa and sour cream on the side. Not bad, but so greasy. I mean what else was I expecting? Could only deal with having one before I could feel my Cholesterol signaling a sign of help. Shrimp Tacos - ($17.75) - the description said diced, but my shrimp was the little tiny ones that would have been way too small to be diced to begin with? The tangy avocado dressing was super refreshing and the salsa was also pretty tasty. Who can hate on Julio's? Not me that's for sure! I would definitely recommend coming here at a less-than-busy time. I know it is super fun to come on a Fri/Sat night, but the wait times are cray! I like to come for lunch if I can! I love their selection of hot sauces! Adds a bit of a kick to my meal! I'm kind of a creature of habit here and will usually order the fajitas. Primarily because I'm a volume eater and need to stuff my face. They also have their world famous bulldogs, which I would definitely recommend checking out if you have the chance! A classic Edmonton joint that has forever been popular for the bulldogs and the nachos. We personally love to small chips and salsa that comes out right away. The nacho platter is a delight, coming with more toppings than chips so you need to crack open your fork and knife set or get your scooping fingers into the last remnants. I only wish it always came with guacamole as a standard not an add on. Coming here on the weekend for drinks is definitely a little more on the pricey side but we thought it was going to be a full place and difficult to find seating but for a rather large group of us, 6 and a baby, there were still plenty of seating options. It is a bit dark but it just adds a to the vibe of the space. The women's bathroom didn't have a baby change table but I think they had a separate bathroom with one. How is it that I've only checked in once and never reviewed in five years of intermittently coming into Julio's for comforting Mexican food during some of the coldest weather I've experienced in this hemisphere? How? Julio's, located right on Whyte Ave, presents a solid, respectful, slightly conservative version of Mexican staple foods. It's not the edgy South Central LA food truck version, nor the Arizona Tex-Mex variant, nor what you find in San Francisco's 16th St. This is what you find in countless towns across Mexico: rich refried beans, tasty meats, deeply flavorful salsa, bright cheeses. There's also a major bar scene, like a Señor Frog's stop on a Caribbean cruise; great for people-watching! Julio's has a charm of its own, the portion sizes are good, the ambience - exactly what you'd expect, the beer is reasonably priced (especially midweek). I can't say I've ever had a bad experience at Julio's and we've visited it a few times over the last 5 or so years. I'm a fan of their fish tacos, and an even bigger fan of their enchiladas. Kid wise, we have one of those now, and she's never had any complaints. The kids portions are reasonable, and usually they split everything out so that she can assemble her own taco, which makes for a bit of fun. They also have some things to colour. Julio's is always a good time! You definitely shouldn't go here for the Mexican food, but instead go for their amazing bulldogs and atmosphere during the weekend. Julio's was one of the first restaurants I visited after moving to Edmonton and I really enjoyed the experience, I have keep going back regularly. Their staff is friendly and welcoming and are upfront about wait times, which can be long. Their bulldogs are definitely worth a try, they regularly add new flavours to match the season/occasion. My personal favourite is The Bloodhound as it is an incredible mix of beer, spiced rum, raspberry slush and mandarin vodka. It is sweet and tangy and definitely packs a punch! The original is always a good choice too. The food is average, but not bad. I always enjoy the baja fish tacos and the chimichangas. This was my second time here. My first visit I didn't like the flavour, i had ordered the enchiladas and they were quite bland. This time around, I stuck to ordering their quesadillas and it was good. The portion size here is very good. I also had the sangria, but it was not something to write home about. This place is known for their Bulldogs and I've heard a lot of people talk about it. I'm from the states and I've been to many Mexican restaurant but Julio's has my heart and it's so hard to believe that it's only rated at 3 stars! My cousins recommended me to go to this place and said that the fish tacos are to die for and boy they really are. Upon getting our plate of food we ordered bulldogs which are basically big margarita glasses with a full size corona. I never had a bulldog before so I wasn't sure which one to get so I went with the bloodhound. That came a bottle of Stella Artois, spiced rum, absolut mandrin, raspberry sour and raspberry slush. You can really taste all the alcohol in it but not too much where you could get super drunk. Instead of the Stella I asked the waitress if I can get a corona instead and she had no problem switching it out. Our plate of food finally arrived and I ordered the fish tacos that were amazing. That came with 3 tacos which were topped with tomatoes, cabbage and a special sauce. The sides that came with the dish were a bean hummus paste, yellow rice and pico de gallo which complimented the tacos very well and everything was well seasoned. If yelp had a 6 star rating I'd give this place a 10 cause it really is one of the best Mexican restaurants I've ever been to with the best food. I was here as part of a work celebration and felt my experience was just meh. I had the blackened shrimp salad and a bulldog. The salad was lacklustre and overdressed. The corn in the salad was waterlogged and tasteless. For the price they could have grilled some fresh corn at least. The bulldog was just like anywhere else. The service was poor... the waitress didn't even check on our table after delivering the food, we had to flag her down when people wanted their bills. It was not busy, the staff were just busy talking amongst themselves behind the bar. This place has some of the best authentic Mexican food to be found north of the border ! Absolutely loved the salsa, perfect heat level, and loved the fact that I could eat the chip bowl. The choice between the full size corona and the "coronita" was a great touch. My partner and I shared the chicken quesadilla which was just as yummy as we expected from everything proceeding it... it came with a lovely corn medley and some re fried beans and chips, perfect size for a sharing lunch ! Our bill came out to about 60.00 with 4 drinks and the food, which I think is extremely reasonable for this area of the city.. I love the constant lively atmosphere of this place; you can't come here for a quiet meal, that's for sure! I came here once with a friend, and we had to scream our conversation because the music and crowd was so loud. But I didn't mind, I still love this place. I've had the enchiladas and the Barrio burritos, and both were delicious. Loaded with salsa, sour cream and cheese, just the way I like it. The tortillas are stuffed to the point of bursting, and they're so fresh and chewy. Julio's also makes a kick-ass blue curacao! It's the drink I'm going to order next time too. I find very few restaurants can get the food and drinks right, so when I discover one that does, it's like hitting the jackpot. The service is always great. Sometimes it's a bit of a wait because they can get pretty busy, especially in the summer, but it's not too bad. If you get there during peak dinner hours around 7pm-ish, there might be a bit of a line. I had to wait awhile once, and there were so many people that I had to stand near the entrance of the Met, the hotel next door. But the hostess still came around the back of the line to find me, which I thought was awesome. Other places would usually just call your name maybe twice and then move onto the next person. To be honest I've been very unimpressed with this place as of late. Sure, it's a happening night spot but most of the flavour from their dishes comes from cilantro-ified items. As a result most of my meals here are really bland. The deep fried ice cream, which I used to love as a kid is also now too much for me -- too sweet and too large of a portion. I have such good memories of going here as a teen/young adult for virgin margaritas (I don't drink alcohol generally), but even those don't intrigue me as much This place is often too loud and obnoxious unless you're here at a non-peak time. The chips are delightful however, and I did like the speed of orders being brought to the table at a non-peak time. I just find that the food is ho-hum, and possibly overpriced for what you get on occasion (though the portions are pretty ample, I have more issues with the flavour of the food). The decor has changed over the years, but I think that the mannequin lounging in the hammock above our table looked more like a dead body than like a person sleeping, so that was disconcerting for sure. read more

I come here for the patio, the drinks and the chips & salsa. I gave up on the food here years ago. Fun place to hang out with friends on a hot mid-week evening. There is no wait for a patio seat on a Mon-Thurs night. The sights and sounds are adorably tacky and over the top. Bistro chairs on the patio are not the most comfortable, but I get used to them... better seats are their cushioned regular rattan stools *just* inside. The service is a mix bag, again, I just don't expect much, it ranges from very good to kind of poor. I'm not a Bulldog drinker, I go for the regular margaritas, in a variety of flavours. Strawberry and raspberry are made with real fruit and have fruity bits it them. If I'm not driving, I love the fishbowl or pitcher sizes: great value, especially with the complimentary chips & salsa brought to the table when you sit down. Makes for a fun, cheap, and slightly tipsy, night out with the girls. read more

Filled with vibrant colors and a great spot for people watching, Julio's Barrio really stands out on the bustling Whyte Ave.  Just stopped in for a quick bulldog after a long day at Nait but it was definitely worth it.   As soon as we grabbed a table it was filled with complimentary chips and salsa!  (Very smart move by Julio) The bulldog was great, I recommend going with the full sized Corona for that extra little adventure.  A spot to stop this Patio season for sure. My three year old niece can make better food and provide better service. I was hung up on twice, the food was sloppily made (the onions in my quesadilla weren't even chopped, just thrown in there in giant chunks), and half the quesadilla was soggy. Save yourself the time and money. read more

Love heading to Julio's to sit out on the patio and people watch. Julio's has the best red sangria In the city! Service today was not good. :-( Had to change tables though as the patio was very windy. Our server seemed unimpressed about this request. He proceeded to take us to the very back of the restaurant. When I inquired about sitting at an empty table near the front this seemed to irritate him only more. Took forever to get our drink order in. ( it was not busy). I had to go directly to the bar to get a glass of water as our server was not in sight and did not fulfil the simple request. It took awhile for the sangria and bulldog to come to the table. Adorable little restaurant! I found the lighting, decor, and over ambience in the restaurant to be charming. It definitely transported me out if edmonton (which I loved). Having traveled my fair share, Id say that Julio's did a wonderful job incorporating international aspects into the restaurant!! They give you unlimited chips and dip which is probably a good thing since the service was slightly slower (the only thing I took a star away for), but the server was really nice about it and made sure our drinks were always full and our chips were available so we could munch on something while we waited. I love the food here. Definitely good spices and taste. Plus, mixed with the atmosphere of the restaurant, you could almost believe you are in Mexico! Their drinks are pretty awesome as well. Margaritas are obvious their signature (with good cause, everyone go get a fishbowl now!) and over the weekends, bulldog specials :) plus they always have good tequila!! So I guess what I'm saying is come here and have a great time!! read more

Never a dull moment at Julio's! My boyfriend and I chose Julio's Barrio last weekend to join my sister and her date (double date! woo!) for a good place to sit down, talk and enjoy some food and drinks. We were seated quickly for a Saturday night (it was FREEZING outside) Our server took out drink order and while we were waiting brought over the usual complimentary basket of tortilla chips and salsa - but we were in for a treat this time as she brought us the salsa sampler! Four different salsas - each of them delicious. We ate it all almost before our drinks arrived. My boyfriend ordered a hiball (boring!) and I ordered my usual - A Chihuahua "bulldog" The "Bulldog" drinks are a margarita-type slush with various liquor and an overturned beer. The Chihuahua has a Keith's White and some Grand Marnier or something. It's SO good. They go down smooth and hit you hard so beware! The manager, came over and hung out with us for a bit and treated us to one of the best shots of tequila I've ever tasted! No need for salt or lime :) It's so nice to stop by a busy place like Julios and get a bit of recognition and a chat :D I ordered the Ranchero Dip for dinner. It's definitely shareable for at least 2-3 people but it's SO filling. It comes with tortilla chips and the dip is refried beans, cheese, guac and salsa and it's warm and gooey and soooooooooo good! Don't skip it. Our food came out on time, as ordered (I have some food allergies that were take n care of) I love Julio's Barrio. It's the best in the summer as the patio is one of the best in the city! But in the winter, it still keeps it's fiesta feel and is just as good to have a bunch of drinks and some hot, flavourful food.
