I'm seriously kicking myself for not coming to Calle Mexico sooner! It's right next to my house and it's amazing. Although I needed to try too many things on the menu so it was expensive lol. They have amazing tacos and home made guac/salsa/chips. The chips are definitely home made because they have that authentic taste. I tried the fish tacos which I really enjoyed. I think overall though my favourite thing on the menu was definitely the guacamole! Yummy! We didn't have to wait for a seat or anything even though it was busy so that was nice. I decided to give this another try as the first time around I ordered take out and my food was not the greatest. This time I ate at the restaurant. I was very surprised to see that it was fairly empty on a Friday night (not sure if this is the norm). Despite that they had the music going on full blast. The restaurant is fully decorated with Mexican decor. I noticed that they also had a large party room with a stage and a dance floor. I'm guessing this is used for private bookings. The service is very casual. Once you are ready to order you go up to the front to put in your order and pay. A staff member will deliver the food to your table. Although the staff were very kind and friendly, we did notice that once the food arrived, no one came by to check on us. We were never once offered a water refill nor were our empty dishes cleared even though we had long finished our meal. I ordered the fish tacos and our table got salsa and guacamole to share. The guacamole was very fresh and tasty, we all enjoyed it. The salsa was watery so we didn't enjoy it as much. The chips were delicious but a little over baked. The tacos were absolutely delicious and I would get them again. I added some of the fixings from their toppings bar which made it even better. The portions are great for the price. 4 tacos for $17! Not sure how to rate this. Food was really tasty. However, between COVID rules and the setting, it seemed removecd. Things thrown on platters. Fast food atmosphere. We didn't have a lot of service. We went up to order and everyone was friendly. however, there was no real follow up.The food was brought to us and we were left to eat that in plastic plates. It seemed undone. Food was good. I enjoyed the fish tacos especially. Batter was crispy. Loved all the salsas. Well done! Great selection from mild to spicy. All fresh and all tasty. If you want a casual experience where it is like a taco bell with much better food go here. But as far as atmosphere and service there are other places that would supply this. Lots of potential. Today was my first time at Calais Mexico and it ended up being on their third anniversary. What a party! The place was packed I don't know if it's usually like this or if it was just because of our large group (which by the way I would never go with again). It's the only reason I gave them four stars instead of five I wish they had mentioned the place is not great for big crowds. The food was great - I had the shrimp tacos and I don't think I've had better. The shrimp were done to perfection and the three tacos were just enough to fill me up. Apparently they only have these on Fridays so make sure to go in on a Friday and try some. We also tried the guacamole and chips. The guacamole is made to order so it was very fresh. There was also a lot of it which I appreciated - good value. I also had the lime Margarita and it was delicious. Definitely worth trying! Now I don't think they do this every time but they had a lovely band playing and the music was great. Totally added to the atmosphere. I will definitely be coming back here for some authentic Mexican food just not whole big crowd! I followed some reviews and decided to try this place out. The staff were very friendly and the place was clean. We were the first people in for the day so we had our pick of the few tables. We had fish tacos which my wife said were good but sort of bland. She also had the carne Assad's tacos which she thought were delicious. I ordered the enchiladas and the tortilla soup. The enchiladas were good although I didn't enjoy the rice or the side order of refried beans. The beans were very liquidy (is that a word) almost like soup. I have been coming to this place for a while now. When it first opened doors the tacos were super tasty. Over the years most of the plates have become super salty. Even the desert ( tres leches ) was really sweet. The service is good. They are nice people, I would recommend coming during the day as it gets busy in the evening. Been back a couple times now to Calle Mexico and it's good as ever. The restaurant is now fully expanded with plenty of tables. Like the large portraits they've put up on the walls; feels very homey. Part of the menu's been updated - there's now an appetizer & side section along with alcoholic drinks and dessert. Siiiiiiiiiick. Don't pass up on any of their specials of the day. Don't forget to stock up on the sauces. Why are the containers so small though??? Had to go back twice to refill on the guacamole and salsa verde. - Melon ($2.50) - pretty light, mild but you can tell it's made with real melon. I think the horchata is my favourite out of the three available flavours. - Nachos ($10.00) - the nachos are great; fresh, crunchy and crisp. The flavours were pretty well balanced except a couple bites the salt came through. - 2x Sopes ($4.00 each) - freaking delicious. Topped with onion, queso, avocado and here's the kicker: potatoes. Potatoes were perfect! Thoroughly enjoyed/devoured it. - Suadero tacos ($12.00) - suadero = brisket. Yes, please. I still wish their tacos included four instead of the odd three (how do you share?) but brisket was excellent. - Churros ($7.50) - 5 massive pieces, which we weren't expecting, with a side of caramel sauce to dip them in. Good place to eat to get authentic Mexican food. The enchiladas are amazing in store. I finally went to try the food truck. First of all the food truck app took me to the wrong place. Then I had To ask locals how to get to the place because of there wrong pin on the app which I corrected them on and they still did not fix. When I finally found them they were out of the meat. Sad. Now they opened in the west Ed mall and jacked up there prices. Way to expensive compared to other food there. I wanna eat there but I'm on a budget. I'll pass. Came here with two business colleagues and enjoyed what I would consider some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. One word: FRESH. Everything was very clean and fresh and just tasted extremely authentic and good. I've been to Mexico and even the food there was sometimes not as good as the food I had at Calle. We ordered a number of the popular dishes, five to be exact, and three of the desserts and some margaritas. The food came within 10 minutes and the owner even stopped by the table and chatted with us, and was super friendly. I got the fish tacos and my husband got Enchiladas. We split them, it was a lot of food but we are every last bit! It came with an abundance of salsa and sour cream. Oh wow! 24 hours later, I'm still thinking about those delicious Tostadas. So flavourful and satisfying. Usually I'm not a fan of messy food but these are worth it - just be sure to have some napkins at the ready. The chicken was awesome, veggies fresh and abundant and the tortilla nice and crispy. They also have lots of different salsas you can try. The restaurant itself is small but well laid out with a surprising amount of seating. I was glad to arrive just before the lunch rush. I can see why this place gets busy! The service was super friendly and you could tell they were working their butts off in the kitchen. I think this is one of most authentic and delicious Mexican restaurants in the city. I came here with a friend who is a regular patron. We shared a couple orders of tacos and ordered a chicken sope each. The steak tacos were excellent. Tons of flavour! The meat was marinated perfectly and topped with beans with the pico del gallo salsa and avocado finished it off nicely. The fish tacos were a little disappointing as they were slightly over deep fried and therefore dry but the toppings made up for it. By far my most favourite were the chicken sopes! Can someone say fiesta? Because there was a party of flavour and crunchiness in my mouth! I am salivating thinking of them right now. Sopes are handmade thick tortillas topped with tinga chicken, sour cream, radish, feta cheese, and avocados. They are like the deep dish pizza of tacos. The crunchy taco with all of the fresh and delicious toppings are worth sinking your teeth into. We had the melon water and the horchata to drink. Both were delicious. The horchata reminded me of a creamy cold cinnamon chai. The owners are super friendly and take the time to explain the menu to you. It was nice to chat with them. Superiormente excelente!!!! If you want real Mexican food stay away from Julio's and make your way over to Calle Mexico. The soup is wonderful and fresh and the sandwiches are superbly filling and satisfying. You will feel like you are visiting your auntie or grandma when you arrive as they are so warm and inviting. Calle Mexico is the real deal ! As mentioned in other reviews, this place is tiny. There are 3 tables and a bit of counter seating. maybe room for maybe 12-14 people max. If you are looking for atmosphere, I can only say, get take-out and eat at home. This place is basic. With a TV on the wall and some artwork it's nothing splash. ***UPDATE*** - Went in on 3-Feb-2017 and they have annexed the space next to them, and so now they have ~ 10 tables. A huge improvement ! Food is just as stellar ! The food on the other hand is anything but basic. Actually, I take that back these folks are into making basic tacos, tostados and enchiladas. Basic as in, starting from scratch and making everything fresh. I had the Tacos. The taco shells were clearly made that day. Fresh and not from any store. All the other ingredients were either cooked then or shortly before arriving. All of it very fresh. Just like what you would get if you at a family run place in Mexico. When you walk in, your order from a counter, pay for it and then find a seat. There is no "table service" although the gal that took our order was quick and apologetic to clean off one of the few tables there. There is another place in town that has as good food, but Calle Mexico is less expensive and you don't have to wait an hour to be seated. The reviews do not exaggerate. This place, I can only describe as "da bomb!!!!". Yea, 90's slang tells my age. Whatever!! We ordered the Dorados which are fried tacos and very delicious. But the best.... Was the tostadas... Crispy flat shell with the most flavourful pulled chicken and toppings was exactly the perfect combination to complement each other. I also got horchata, as I've always heard of it, never had it. It was exactly what I thought it would be, and a little Christmas tasting. Very refreshing. Because it's my birthday I got the tres leches cake, not really knowing what it is. It seems to be a sort of white cake soaked in condensed milk, evaporated milk and heavy cream. It was very sweet, but I'm personally not a fan of this type of cake. They have a little stand with home made salsas which are a must try. I'm soooo glad we came here, hubby said he'd come again which speaks volumes since he's a man of few words, and now I've gotta bring my girlfriends here. read more

I really really like it here - used to only get take out, but since they've expanded, we often stay in. The service is always really friendly and the food fresh. The tostada and the alambre tacos (bacon in tacos for the win!!) are delicious, but we've probably eaten through their whole menu and liked everything. Even their hot sauce is tasty - spicy but with flavour; this isn't Frank's red hot, my friends. My favourite thing though, is the tres leches cake. It is so damn good. Always leave room for it. It was Tuesday, and I had Tacos on the brain... I dialed up Yelp to see what places I may not have tried, and up pops Calle Mexico in the number 1 spot. Having not yet tried this place, I drove over, as it was close to home, to see what all the fuss was about. I walk though the front door to a warm greeting and am immediately handed a menu. The selection is excellent, and simply laid out, with ordering at the front. Your meal will be brought out, and then you can visit the Salsa Bar. (and you DO want to visit the Salsa Bar...) I was torn between the Pescado Tacos (fish) and the Lengua Tacos. (beef tongue) I almost never see lengua up here, and having had it many times in Mexico, it is a treat. In the midst of my indecision, the server walked past me with a platter of fish tacos, and with one whiff, my fate was sealed. Pecado Tacos and a Pacifico Clara. (Calle Mexico is licensed for beer and wine, and have a nice selection of Mexican beers.) I took a seat in the simple but colorful seating section to wait on my food, and fired up my tablet to read my book. The food arrived quickly, about 10 minutes, and I was spellbound. A platter of 4 good sized tacos, with screaming fresh ingredients. Salsa Bar time... A selection of delightful house made salsas and condiments, it lets you add more glory to what you have been given. These were among the best fish tacos I have eaten in Edmonton, and better than many I have had in Mexico. I will be back very soon to hit the Lengua. Overall: Restaurant - Uber Casual, very much like a real Taqueria. (but cleaner... this place is spotless. I wish MY bathroom was as clean as theirs.) Comfortable, cozy. You feel at home as soon as you walk in. Food - I have only had the one meal, but seeing what others were eating, and their reactions, I give the food a solid 5. Superb Tacos, and Pacifico in the cooler. If they had Tecate, I would give them a 6. Service - NICE people, smiling and appearing to have a good time making amazing food. Friendly and outgoing, fast efficient service. Solid 5. The one negative would be the location. They are wedged between a pawnshop and the kind of liquor store where you buy 40 oz bottles of fortified beer, suitable for drinking straight from the brown paper bag. The local gentry can be interesting, if your timing is right. (or wrong, as the case may be...) Once inside, however, the restaurant seems full of Yuppies and Hipsters. SO GOOD!! I felt like I was right back in Mexico from the first bite and each additional bite thereafter! When you first walk in you find that there is my much room. Nestled on 107 Avenue, the storefront location for the famous food truck is a tiny place! We think it had seating for 10-12 people. It was fantastic! You smell the aroma of fresh scratch-made dishes and salsas. We ordered the beef tacos, chicken tostadas, green chili chicken enchiladas, and a steak torta! Every bite was absolutely incredible. Very tasty! We were a party of eight. Came here with a reservation. The restaurant filled up pretty quick! We ordered Jamaica and the beer bloody Mary. Both were good. I also tried someone's horchata which tasted like a cinnamon bun! Tostadas, sopes and Al pastor tacos were what we ordered. Tostadas were a little messy but delicious nonetheless. Sopes were also great! Everything comes out quick and is very fresh. The Al pastor tacos are ok but I'm spoiled by El Fogon. The tacos could be a bit more "stronger"?, They disintegrate with the moisture of the contents. We finished up with the tres leches cake which is rich and decadent! Great customer service! I wanted to write up this review after trying all the options in the menu but that is almost imposible! They always add more delicious options and specials! Calle Mexico is not just another Mexican restaurant, it's a a place where you can experience a bit of Mexico in downtown Edmonton. They owners Juan and Angie are extremely nice and so friendly and welcoming. Sopes, tacos, tostadas, chilaquiles, tortas, amazing nachos, pambazos, and much more is part of their menu. The service is great, they always welcome you with a great smile and willing to explain their menu. They have some Mexican pop - Jarritos and a good selection of Mexican beer to offer. I've also tried a corn in a cob with fresco cheese! OMG! One difference that I noticed with other Mexican restaurants it's that they have an unlimited mild, mid and hot sauces, you can also find habanero sauce if you are brave enough to try it, sorry I am not. This place is more like a fast food idea, not much as a restaurant, but everyone is whiling to bring your food to the table, and also check on your water, this is unexpected but very well received! So extra star for that! No parking lot here, but that it's not an issue, there is enough street parking around the block so all good. I read that you can also buy a gift certificate with them! This is a small restaurant located on 107 avenue. The location is not the greatest however the food is traditional which is a nice change from the taco bell chain restaurant. This was my first time at this establishment. I'll admit that I'm not aware of how "real authentic" Mexican food should taste but I do know what I like. And I really enjoyed this. So despite this place having amazing reviews on Google and Yelp....I just don't know why. Veal Torta was deep fried breaded veal topped with beans, ham, lettuce, cheese, chipotle cream, tomatoes, and avocado. Despite having alot of ingredients that I liked, it just tasted like alot of bread and lettuce. There was nothing really special about the bread, or the veal, just mouthful of lettuce. Same goes for the Tostadas. It was topped with beans, chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, radish, sour cream, feta cheese, and avocados but for the most part just tasted like lettuce. Behind all that lettuce though was some decent tasting chicken and a crisp tostada. Located on 107th ave and 112 st, this place is small and it's limitations give it's mexican charm. However, it was the small things that made me think twice about this place. They had toppings such as hot sauce on the side , but also they had guacamole. A neon green liquid guacamole that i've never seen and don't care to understand. What also didn't make sense to me was the pricing as 3 tacos were $13 and that's 3 more dollars than other places in Edmonton that make a good taco. Honestly, best Mexican food in town! What we ordered: - Steak Tacos (Asada)- came with 6 servings and they were good! The meat was seasoned well and wasn't dry. Was topped with pico del gallo salsa (but no avocados or beans this time as mentioned by other yelpers). - Fish Tacos (Pescado) - 3 servings of tacos. The pieces of fish overly battered but crispy and came with a slaw topping. - Tortilla Soup - my least favourite item. The soup was too "beany" tasting for my palate. But I appreciate that they didn't skimp on the beans, chicken or beef that was in the bowl. Oh and another plus for serving the tortilla chip pieces on the side so they don't get overly soggy by the time you eat. - Sopes - the BEST item by far! A thick tortilla topped with shredded chicken, sour cream, radish, feta and avocado (although they skimped on the avocado). The flavour combination was amazing and highly recommended! (Thanks fellow yelper Bernice for the recommendation) - For dessert: Tres Leches Cake - So yummy too! Made in house and not overly sweet but perfectly moist. Make sure you leave room for dessert! - To drink: Lime margarita - It was just okay - needed to be colder, more limey, and less salty in my opinion. Service: The place was bustling and busy when we arrived since we came on Cinco de Mayo. But we came after the lunch rush so we waited for a table to be cleared. The service thereafter was decent and friendly. You order and pay up front and the food is brought to your table as it becomes ready. Salsa and other toppings can be found at a self-serve bar near the front entrance. Same with utensils and napkins.
