On the streets since 2011, Drift is pretty much one of Edmonton's OG food trucks. They were one of the first on the scene when food trucks really started to become a "thing." The best part? After a decade they're still probably the best food truck in the city. VUE Weekly named them #1 Best Food Truck 2018 and the show Eat St. featured them in season four. Plus they've been on the Worldwide Faves list on this website this entire time. Locals know that this is the truck that you want - especially for their legendary pork belly sandwich. (If they ever took it off of the menu I think the planet might implode? It's science.) The best way to figure out where Drift is going to be on any given day is to check their website where they've got an up-to-date calendar of their whereabouts. The truck shuts down for the winter so it's always exciting when the end of April rolls around and you know that you're going to be able to start stalking them again. I went to find the truck on the seasons opening of the 124 Grand Market in Westmount, a wonderful farmers' market. Drift does sometimes sell out, so if there's something in particular that you want to eat from them, I'd recommend arriving early. (This will also help you to avoid waiting in a giant lineup.) It's always exciting when the turquoise-painted truck comes into view. These days, the menu on offer is usually pretty standard. They've got four different sandwiches - all amazing. (Although back in the day they used to sometimes do a duck confit sandwich that you don't see anymore and I'd love to see that one make a glorious return!) They've also got some sides that are very good as well. You know the drill, you approach the truck window to make your order with the friendly people inside, then wait a few minutes until they call your name and hand you a brown paper bag filled with goodness. And they do take cards as payment these days. To drink they usually have interesting local canned beverages and they're often different from one visit to the next. I spotted the Troubled Monk Ginger Ale Soda (from Red Deer) and decided to give it a try. This craft ginger ale was quite possibly the best ginger ale that I've ever tasted. The flavour was so real! You could tell that it's made with real ginger but it also had a very unique and wonderful molasses flavour that I really enjoyed. If you see this soda around you should definitely grab some! Next, I moved in on the Sides. We were going to have a true Drift feast on this day! There were four different items to choose from and I had to try the Poutine (Made with beef gravy & fresh cheese curds - $6.50) because I think that this might be something a bit new that they're doing. First of all, their hand-cut fries are already super famous and they season them with "Drift spice" which involves cumin, fennel, mustard seed and chili. (They also do their own housemade ketchup made with cardamom and ginger, which is excellent.) So the fries alone are already something special... But then they went and turned them into a poutine. This very well may be the best poutine happening in Edmonton right now. I'm super picky about poutine (as you may already know) and this one crushes it on every level. The fries are ultra crispy and golden (likely double fried) and dusted in their delicious seasoning. The cheese curds were fresh and squeaky, piled on high. And the gravy was hot and savoury. THIS is the poutine that Edmonton needs to know about. I also ordered the Broccoli Salad (Broccoli, apple, carrot, raisin & herb aioli - $4.75), because health! Loved this little salad. This is a great way to add something a bit more fresh to your Drift meal and I loved the bright combination of veggies and fruit. The broccoli was crunchy and the apple and raisin gave it a nice sweetness. You really can't go wrong with this salad and you'll feel like you ate vegetables. And then it's sandwich time. The Pork Belly Sandwich (Chili mayo, pickled carrot & daikon, fresh cilantro - $9.00) is truly of Edmonton legend and I doubt that I'll ever be able to get myself to order anything else. This sandwich is everything. I dove in immediately and reveled in the symphony of flavours. First and foremost is the pork belly that has taken on an incredible caramelized glaze which gives it a bit of a crunch. It's sliced thin and the fat is rendered down perfectly. Next, the pickled vegetables and cilantro give the sandwich a definite Vietnamese vibe, and the slight kick from the chili mayo is the perfect way to round everything out. The bun reminds me of the soft and crusty Portuguese type. It's a perfect sandwich. Incredibly delicious and consistently amazing for a whole decade, this sandwich must never, never go away. I love Drift. They're a major part of the culinary tapestry in this city and they've certainly played a huge roll in making the food truck scene everything that it is today. Went to Terwilligar farmers market today. Chose Drift for a Buttermilk Chicken sandwich and a Pork Belly chicken sandwich. Let start with the chicken. When you want a buttermilk chicken sandwich you want a nice plump juicy piece of chicken. What you don't want is an over fried, dried out, thick coating piece of meat .. tossed on a bun with a carrot "slaw". See photo... right side of meat. chicken is grey it's so over cooked . Flavour wise .... Maybe try some cayenne, onion powder, cracked pepper, kosher salt etc. and soak the bird meat for 4 hours in the buttermilk. 10.00 for a really crappy sandwich .. honestly Popeyes or Chic Fillet is better.... So for me to rate a chain over handmade.... The pork belly flavour was there .. just very small amount of pork belly... again. I smoke a LOT of meats.. briskets, buts, pork belly etc etc. a big big slab of pork belly is cheap at Costco. So toss enough on a sandwich to make it a meal... especially for 10.00. I'll pay that all day if I don't need to go to A and W after because I feel like I ate a bun and a couple pieces of pork belly. To be fair... Burgers/sandwiches were all at $8.50. Fries at $4. I had the pork belly burger and fries. The pork belly was not dry and cooked just right. The bun was perfect and the stuff in that burger made everything tasty. The fries were crispy and the home-made ketchup was yum! I wonder if they sell the ketchup. I really liked it! All food were cooked to order so with that said, you have to wait for a while especially if there is a number of people ahead of you. When i got there, there were about 6 people ahead of me on the order line. It took about 4 mins to get the order and another 10-15 mins to collect the food. Although I may not get as much Drift in my life nowadays as I would like, I'll take what I can get it! And today was my lucky day =) It's been over 8 months since I've had the pleasure of eating at Drift. These days, they only park near my work (beside Audrey's bookstore), once a week (Wednesdays), and only from 11am - 2pm. Hopefully you can line up before noon as if you get there too late, the line up snakes down the sidewalk often to the corner of Jasper & 107 Street. Today I got my favourite pork belly sandwich with Drift fries. *smile* Their food makes me happy! And you know what else makes me happy? Seeing Kara as pleasant and sweet as ever at the window! She is such a doll and the nicest food truck order taker in YEG. Was sad to see Nevin missing in action, but Kara informed me he was manning their brick & mortar store on 124 Street (Dovetail Delicatessan). The wait wasn't too bad for the food, which came out hot and fresh. It's nice to see that they now take credit cards! So, don't let the line ups scare you away from trying this amazing mobile eatery. I've been conflicted between a 4 and 5 star rating for Drift. I really do love their sandwiches here and so, I'm certainly a fan! I could easily see myself addicted to Drift if I worked or lived near their stop and could visit them every now and then. The sandwiches are not ordinary truck food, in that they have a lot of subtlety to their flavors; they are, however, priced in the affordable regime and are quite simple. As mentioned by others, the pork belly sandwich is quite terrific and is served with a tasty and not over-sauced dressing. The ciabatta bread is fresh, crunchy on top and spongy inside. It's a huge piece of bread so it really encompasses the ingredients of the sandwich well, so much so that I've never had a dripping episode. The jerk chicken sandwich is flavored perfectly with crispy, caramelized pineapples and is super tasty too. A really special mention to their fries. They're crispy, fresh, really hot (like straight out of the frier) and, and, and...... exceptionally flavored. It's a unique combination of cumin, mustard, fennel and perhaps some other mysterious ingredient that flavors their fries. With a $3.00 order of fries, comes a homemade tomato ketchup/sauce kinda thing that has a bit of a curried flavor and compliments the flavors of the fries in totality. While I do love their sandwiches beyond any form of doubt, I find that I'm always hungry after their sandwich + fries lunch. I guess I've got a bit of a huge belly! It's possible that we're just pampered with the idea that a sandwich needs to be stuffed to the max with ingredients, but I find that this meal for $10.50 will often be supplemented with a large breakfast and an afternoon snack. Probably my favourite food truck in the city of Edmonton, Drift has Edmonton's best fries! And the sandwiches are excellent as well! The only reason I don't visit more often is because I'm sure I would spend a bundle on food here if I went more frequently. They are known around town for their homemade ketchup which is indeed delicious. I don't even like ketchup most of the time, but theirs is worth having -- I used my excess ketchup on a sandwich I made today for example after finishing off my fries. This has certainly been a spectacular summer for food trucks in Edmonton, and when Avenue Magazine voted Drift as the 2013 Best Food Truck, that was some high praise. And then when they called the Pork Belly Sandwich one of the Top 25 Things to Eat in Edmonton, that was just the cherry on top of the overwhelming amount of love that Drift has received from Edmontonians since they rolled into downtown. EVERY WORD OF IT IS TRUE. All of it. I've never walked by this truck without trying something, and loving every tasty, flavour-filled bite of whatever I ordered. The fries have exactly the right amount of spice and crispy-ness. The sandwiches are never over-dressed with the toppings. No sauce or marinade on the meat has ever tasted like something was missing or like I should add salt or pepper or sriracha (and I like a healthy dose of that on everything), and all of it is served with a smile and the best service from some of the nicest people you'll meet in the food industry. They're usually on 107 Street just south of Jasper Ave at lunch times, but with the construction going on downtown, we've lately been finding them one block over at 108 Street, affectionately known and Food Truck Alley. Drift clearly had no trouble shaking off winter and getting ready for a new season of street food. Already a fan in 2011, I hit them up on their first day back on the streets of Edmonton in 2012. In the middle of a snowy afternoon, no less. If Edmonton has a competition for best fries (and it probably should), Drift is going to be fighting off the challengers with its spiced Drift fries(roasted fennel, cumin, mustard seeds, and chili) and even their salt and pepper fries. Hot, crispy outside soft inside, deliciousness. Pair them with the house ketchup and it's enough to make you think about fries alone for a meal. But then you'd be missing out on the sandwiches. Jerk chicken is a favourite, and my first choice of 2012. The chicken's juicy, the slaw adds a crunch, and the pineapple gives the sandwich a bit of sweetness. Easily one of the best sandwiches I've ever had (and had again, and again). It was the perfect way to kiss winter goodbye. It looks like Drift has some new sandwiches, and soups! for 2012 too. Serving fantastic gourmet sandwiches and the most delicious french fries you've ever tasted, Drift has been making serious fans in the week since they opened for business. The sandwiches are not what you'd call deli style... i'm talkin' pork belly, duck confit, back bacon and brie, chorizo and more. The ciabatta buns are really nice too. The french fries are seasoned with fennel, mustard seed, and cumin; they are a show stopper. The sandwiches are $7.50, and the fries are $3.00. Pretty reasonable. Cash only though. Apparently they have really good ginger cookies, but I was too busy stuffing pork belly in my gullet to notice. Maybe next time i'll try them. I did not get the homemade ketchup but I don't really like Ketchup and the fries were so good I couldn't imagine covering up the taste with ketchup. I fell in love with the pulled pork belly sandwich from Drift this summer. Any time I was craving a sandwich for lunch, I just headed out in search of the familiar teal green truck. I really should try other items from their menu, but the pulled pork is just so damn good! It's like a fusion twist on a Viet sub, burger style. A mixture of shredded carrots, daikon, cilantro, spicy mayo and shredded pulled pork all in a ciabatta bun delivers the perfect ratio of crunchy freshness and juicy, tender meat in every bite. Although I will say that one time the pork was a little overcooked and dry, to the point where I wasn't sure if I was chewing the meat or a piece of the paper bag the sandwich came in. After catching a lot of attention in the states, we finally get some food trucks rolling downtown. You can't miss Drift parked outside 108 Street and between 100 Ave and Jasper. Not only is it a large green truck, but it has a make shift paint easel sign with the day's specials as well as free menus to give out (Edmonton postcards with the menu on the back. Pretty cool!). You'll probably also notice the large crowds of people congregating around it. I wanted to try the pork belly and to my surprise, I think I've had this in some sort of shape or form growing up. The pork belly sandwich was served as a sandwich with ciabatta bun, coleslaw, and cilantro. The sauce was very familiar as it nestled right up to the fatty pork belly and the cilantro provided a nice aftertaste. The carrots were crunchy but what I found was the sandwich seemed to have more bread than substance. There didn't seem to be enough garnish or meat so the sandwich left me wanting more pork belly; all I tasted was the ciabatta bread. Clocking in at about $7.50, I'm hesitant to come back here and try the other sandwiches; both coworkers also indicated the same with their sandwiches not having enough filling in their sandwiches. read more

Wow what is with this place that attracts Yelpers? Seriously! I came with a Yelper, we ran into Yelpers.... Who would have thought that a food truck would be the place to see and be seen? This was my first experience with the food truck phenomenon and I'm glad to say it did not disappoint. Unfortunately for me, we came at the very end of the lunch rush and they were all sold out of buns. Boooo! Unfortunately the soup of the day wasn't vegetarian or I would have probably tried that too. Luckily they still had plenty of fries. I had heard a lot of hype about them and can I say YUM?! Honestly these were some of the best fries I've ever had. Not too crispy, not too soggy. Plus the homemade ketchup was wonderful. It almost has a curry-like flavour to it. Delish! The owner was super chatty and nice. He ended up throwing in a couple extras for us since we weren't able to try their sandwiches. Totally unnecessary but definitely appreciated. Although I have never been a fan of sandwiches, Drift has made me a convert. With the fresh buns for Portugese bakery and interesting combinations of ingredients in their sandwich, and their heavily spiced fries, they have made two things I usually avoid ordering things I look forward to eating! Their fries have great flavor on their own and their house made ketchup is a nice compliment, unlike traditional ketchup which is overly sweet and tends to overwhelm everything it touches. The sandwiches have a great combination of taste and texture. My favorite is the pork belly, consisting of soft pork belly, pickled crispy daikons and carrots and smeared with chili mayo, it's an irresistible flavor profile. Although it might feel a bit pricy at $7.50 a sandwich and $3.50 for fries, it's well worth it for fresh, local ingredients. read more

Drift is another one of the earliest food trucks on the Edmonton scene and is also another one of my favourites. I love me some sandwiches and Drift always has some great ones. I haven't been disappointed yet in anything I have chosen. The buns are top notch, usually ciabatta or portugese buns. The buns are just as important as the inside of the sandwich and I am glad that they always use great buns to showcase their fillings. Their fries are among my favourite of all of the food trucks and even dining establishments in the city. Their blend of spices for the fries is also quite unique and refreshing. Their homemade ketchup/sauce is also fantastic! A winning duo, and did I mention my favourite fries? If you are looking for a food truck to try and this is one of your choices do not hesitate to try them out. I am pretty sure you will not be disappointed. We have a proliferation of food trucks in Edmonton right now so finding a good quality truck is getting trickier. We do have many good ones, but there are also a few duds. Sadly, the Drift I knew and loved is no more. It may look the same, the offerings may be the same, but it's not the same. The buns are different this year... I can't pinpoint on what. Not terrible, but not as soft and fluffy. But the issue that will now stop me from going back is the quality of the proteins, and stinginess of other ingredients. A few weeks ago I got my favorite roast beef again, only to find that the meat now has lots of pieces of fat (never a problem previously), is drier, and is lacking in the amount of other ingredients (compared to previously). Today I got the falafal (for the first time) and it was so disappointing. The falafal was over deep-fried and greasy, and there were little pieces of deep fried bits falling off everywhere. So gross. There was only a small smear of tzaziki on half, and barely any pickled onions. As a result, the sandwich tasted of nothing but stale deep-fry oil. It was not appealing. My co-workers, who ordered the chicken sandwich, had similar complaints about the lack of toppings, and one received a piece of chicken that was literally half only breading. Disappointed, Drift. I thought maybe you were having a bad day last month with the fatty roast beef, but after today you're at 2 strikes, and I'm out. read more

I came across Drift the other day while on break in between classes. I've heard good things about Drift and was pretty excited to give them a try. They were out of the pork shoulder when I was there so I got the pork belly sandwich and an order of fries. The sandwich was fantastic, tender pork belly with crunchy carrots, daikon and cilantro on a ciabatta bun with chili mayo. It had a great fresh taste with a nice balance between sweet, spicy and savoury. I'm not much of a french fry person. With most places I find fries are ok, but usually something I could skip next time. Not with Drift. In fact I might be so bold as to say these are the best french fries I've ever had. They're spiced differently than regular fries, a good cut and the homemade ketchup is a delicious compliment to them (and completely different taste and texture than regular ketchup). $11 got me a good sized sandwich and an order of fries that was enough to keep me full until dinner. Drift only accepts cash so make sure you have some on hand. After this first encounter with Drift I'll definitely be back. read more

The sandwiches are fantastic. I opted for the roast beef and was rewarded with a sandwich created with FRESH bread. The flavours were well placed and it was enough of a portion to fill you up. If you get the fries to boot, you will be stuffed. The fries are fresh and their signature dipping sauce is a nice change from ordinary ketchup. The first food truck I've ever tried and my absolute favourite truck to visit! The staff are always cheerful and welcoming. Fantastic sandwiches made fresh with locally grown ingredients, they don't disappoint. I've literally tried every sandwich creation they come up with, all delicious! My favorite, by far, would have to be their pork belly sandwich. You and your taste buds will not regret it! After browsing the food trucks at What the Truck, I decided I needed to try one of the sandwiches from Drift. It was by far the longest line so that was a good sign. We were in line for at least 20 minutes and for $4 you received two sample size sandwiches. I had the jerk chicken and pork belly served on a baguette. They were both delicious. The sweetness of the pineapple was a good combination with a little bit of kick from the chicken. The pork belly was flavourful and had veggies in it. I almost wish I hadn't read some of the reviews as I think I expected something beyond epic based on the praises other people were singing! I had the pork belly sandwich with an order of fries. The sandwich was tasty, but I agree with the reviewer that said the bun to meat ratio was a little off. I went with my coworker and she had the roast beef sandwich, which seemed to be a little more meaty. I just found the taste of the pork belly got lost in the giant, albeit tasty bun. The fries were good and well seasoned, but they weren't the life altering experience that the comments on here left me hoping for. The housemade ketchup was really tasty though - that I would definitely eat again. Overall I would love to come back and try a different sandwich sometime later in the summer. read more

So my sister discovered this little wonder, its delicious! I first tried the Jerk Chicken sandwich, very very good! I'm not a big fan of the slaw though. The fries are so so soooo good! They could probably be crispier though. But the seasoning is yummy. They also offer homemade ketchup for free, its not bad, I'm addicted to the usual heinz though. I also tried the Roast Beef Sandwich, A+ for the crispy onions. Drooled over the fries again. If you only like coke/pepsi products then you should probably get your drink somewhere else, they have popular soft drinks from Brazil, including Orangina (my fave) and an orange pop and some kind of passion fruit/guava combination..its good too! We have many fussy eaters at our place of business and Kara was very helpful at suggestions for our dinner. If you want a sandwich, you can't do much better than Drift. From the buns in, these are great sandwiches. Big, hearty ciabatta buns filled with all sorts of gourmet fillings like pork belly, back bacon, jerk chicken and duck confit. There is even a breakfast option with leek sausage and egg, and a falafel for the veggie eaters. It can seem like the fillings inside the sandwich are sparse, but I think that's just because the buns are so big. I am always full after eating a sandwich from Drift, so I can't really say that there isn't enough there for the price ($7.50). They also have some of the best fries in the city - sprinkled with cumin and fennel to give them a bit of bite, and are served with a tangy home made ketchup. There are cookies for dessert (their recent offerings were ancho-chili chocolate) and unique beverage choices (carbonated coffee soda) as well. They are parked weekdays at 108st, just north of Jasper avenue (just look for the big teal truck with the line up of people at their window) and, though they usually take the weekend off, they occasionally tweet (follow @driftfoodtruck) a weekend location for special occasions like a holiday. And as great as the food is (and the food IS great), the owners - Kara and Nevin - are even better. Always smiling and chatting up the customers, they love what they are doing and it comes across in their food and in their interactions with their customers. The fries are fantastic, always fresh and perfectly cooked. If you don't like seasoning (they put a spice mix on their fries) just let them know and they will use regular salt. Their Montreal smoked meat sandwich is amazing, almost as good as Schwartzes themselves! The price is very reasonable - you can get a big sandwich and fries for $10.50 and it's worth every penny. My only complaint is that Drift is only open until 1:30 for lunch; since I work at the university and my lunch break is at 1pm I can't always make it down in time...on the other hand this is probably the universe telling me I can't afford to eat there every day or I will be fat and poor...but it's almost worth it! read more

Well those were probably the worst fries that I have ever eaten...soggy and not sure what the spice was but it does not mix well with fries. Chicken sandwich was good they should stick to the sandwich menu. read more

5 stars for their out-of-this-world pork belly sandwich and their friendly customer service (isn't Kara the sweetest? I don't even know her beyond exchanging a few words with every order and I think she is the sweetest...) 3-4 stars for the rest of their offerings which are fine (maybe a tad overpriced for the money), but not nearly as good as pork belly, and for the long waits during peak times - however, that is solely due to the truck's popularity, not due to the kitchen staff. When I come before 11:20 or after 1:20 (provided they are not sold out of pork belly), service has always been fast and efficient. As for the actual food, the juicy pork belly is complemented so nicely by the Vietnamese-inspired slaw, and warm soft ciabatta bun. I have not tried one dish from any other food truck that I like more than this. I also love the soups when it gets cold out. At peak lunch hour, I like ordering a sandwich and a soup, and ask for the soup right away so I can drink it and keep warm while I'm waiting for my sandwich! The jerk chicken with pineapple... isn't jerky enough. There was no spicy kick that I was expecting. Duck confit was cooked nicely and was juicy, but the melding of the flavours wasn't as special as the pork belly. Their weekly features are pretty good too, but not stellar. I was feeling kind of bummed that I didn't partake in any food trucks this summer but was delighted to come across Drift mobile eatery still out and about near Churchill today. I decided to go with a roast beef sandwich and while I must admit I was initially put off by the $8.50 price tag they make sure you get your money's worth here. My sandwich was loaded up with veggies,cheese,and some of the best roast beef I have ever tasted in my life. I wish I had taken note of what sauce they used because it was excellent for adding spice but not overwhelming the other flavors. I definetly recommend stopping here before the snow starts flying if your a food truck fan. read more

I was wandering around the 124 Street Market and decided to pick me up a pork belly sandwich for dinner. For $8.50, I thought I have had better. The pork belly was overly dry and I was not crazy about the bun that seemed to have absorbed all the grease. The overall sandwich was soggy to say the least and I was more than disappointed for the price I paid. I don't think I will be coming back again. read more

The drift food truck has moved into catering. They should keep doing the food truck thing. I went to a event in which drift food truck did the catering out of there new restaurant on 124 St. It was horrible. The food was cold even the hot appetizers. The small Yorkshire puddings with beef and horseradish cream had no taste and very cold. The meatballs where so plain and again very cold and dry. The corn bread triangles fell apart and again cold. The baked goods came from dutchess bakery. In short it was not worth the money, not even close read more
