I stopped into Tienda Latina yesterday while doing business in the same strip mall, and I was blown away by the selection and service. I had not intended to buy anything in particular, but left with a whole bag full of irresistible items, and a fresh made pork taco from the fresh food kiosk at the back of the store. Lovely people doing wonderful work. This may be my new favourite latin market. I will definitely be back for the fresh food. read more

Yep - this place is A1 when it comes to Mexican/Latin American groceries. I would always prefer to come here in search of taco seasoning, interesting dried chillies and other stuff that I might want to use at home. The prices are cheap, quality Mexican - which I love and everything about this place reminds me of a generic Mexican grocery store on Alvarado St in Los Angeles. The big gem however is their lunch special - tortas made in house. Nothing fancy - it's Superstore bread and deli meats,; spices sauces are probably from their own store. The sandwiches are really tasty though! hmm, delicious, sultry oregano and roasted chillies in flavor, pressed in with cheese! Why three stars? The last time I went there at 12:40 p.m. seeking a sandwich, he informed me the bread would be coming in five mins and he'd be able to get me off on my way before 1 p.m. I waited till 1:30 p.m. for his delicious torta (clearly, I had time because I was waiting for my car to get fixed) with him reminding me every five minutes that the bread is almost here. I paid for my pack of chips and pop that I had consumed in the mean time and left. On my way out, the other guy with bread came through the door. So there was some truth to it. Another time, I was there at 2 p.m. and he was out of bread - so all in all, it's kinda unreliable. However, they're not a restaurant so I don't hold them too responsible. I dropped by this store because I was in the neighbourhood and because there were constant reminders on billboards and radio commercials about the $26M lotto draw tonight. So, I thought I'd check out this little store and see if I could get my lucky ticket. I'll find out how lucky later tonight. The store was pretty basic. It carried typical junk food like chips & sodas. They've got a camera on you. The cashier was friendly and super quick! I just asked for $5 on tonight's lotto and got it pronto. read more

Awesome experience! The staff at this little shop are helpful and exceptionally friendly. When we asked for a salsa recommendation, they even offered us samples from their food kiosk. We were sold! Next time we go we'll be sure to arrive hungry to enjoy more of their homemade snacks. So yummy! I should also note, they are very patient if you want to practice your Spanish. :) We picked up all the grocery items we needed to make authentic carnitas (pork tacos) - tortillas, salsa verde, hot sauce, queso fresco, etc. I know some of these items can be purchased from a regular grocery store but there was way more variety and everything was fresh (the tortillas were even made in Edmonton). If you're looking for a step up from old el paso, this would be my first stop! I'm already collecting more recipes so I have an excuse to go back. read more

I needed chili's to make a really great chili that I had never made before, it required 3 different dried chili's and I couldn't find them anywhere else but here, I emailed them asking if they had them because I'm pretty introverted, and they answered kindly and very quickly(thank you for this I appreciate this!) when I got there I was greeted by very kind and helpful staff that helped me out, and I even grabbed some things that I would've got elsewhere and guess what? Man, I have no idea what they were cooking when I walked in, but my mouth started watering immediately. The aroma in this store was, at the risk of sacrificing my man card, just heavenly. I stopped by for some fairly specific items, three of which I was able to find on my own, and the last was found for me by one of the gentlemen working there. I shop for groceries a lot, and I have never experienced the level of customer service that I was given here. The prices were amazing as well. Three big bags of dried chiles and a pound of Mexican chocolate for less than $17. As I was leaving, the gentleman who helped me stopped me and offered me one of their business cards, asking me to return if I needed any other ingredients. Si, senor - I will be back! read more

A friend turned me on to this little shop in an otherwise forgettable strip mall at 99st and Argyll over the summer, and it's been a regular stop for me ever since. It is a go-to place for all kinds of hard to find Latin ingredients, or to inspire you with ingredients you don't see at the big box stores. Aside from the wide selection of corn tortillas, salsas, and unique sodas, Tienda Latina also makes a few ready to eat items. Huge tortas, some baking, and tamales highlight the choices. What makes Tienda Latina more than just a neighbourhood grocer is something that most of Alberta seems to have abandoned... Customer service. When you walk in the doors, you are greeted with a smile and you are almost guaranteed to be asked if you have any questions, or are looking for anything in particular. Since I am not terribly familiar with some of the merchandise, this is pretty helpful. Case in point: last time I was there I wanted to buy a case of the Jarritos Mexican cola. Israel (sp?) scoured the shelves and the back storage and found that they didn't have a whole case. I asked if I could mix and match a case from the selections in the cooler and still get the case price I was greeted with an enthusiastic "of course!" He then scurried to empty a case for me and helped start filling it. He then got me a cart to make it easier to manage the open case, and provided information on the flavours I wasn't familiar with. At most stores the answer to mix and match would be no. And if it was yes, you would just be pointed to where the carts are and be left to fend for yourself. Since I have had excellent service experiences like this here before, I know it's not an anomaly.... it's an attitude toward treating the customer right. Go check it out for yourself... The prices are more than reasonable, the selection is startling, the flavours are heavenly, and the friendliness is beyond price. Try one of Bernardo's tortas, definitely the most flavourful and most inexpensive in town. read more

I'm an American southerner who moved to Canada a year ago and i have been incredibly thankful to find this place if not just for anchos and ancho chili powder and chorizo, without which i can't make chili. The staff is always friendly, even jovial! Wonderful little latin market and i'm SOOOO thankful for a place that sells ingredients which remind me of home. Would not recommend going around rush hour on a week day, however, if you've got any intentions of travelling south immediately after because the lay out of the parking lot makes it very difficult to turn south down 99th, even from the side street. This store pretty much has any sort of non-perishable Latin American foodstuff you could ever want - and then some. After returning from a vacation in Mexico, I wanted to see if I could find the ingredients to replicate a number of dishes. And they were all there. Dried guajillo chiles! Cuitlacoche (in a can)! Panela cheese! Oaxaca cheese! And if you have a craving for Jarritos or Inca Cola or Mexican Coke - this is your place as well. Sadly, they only had Nopales in a can. The owners mentioned that they once tried shipping some from Mexico, but they don't hold up well to travel. I look forward to trying one of their tortas (sandwiches) sometime as well. They cost about a half of what Tres Carnales charges. read more

This place is incredible. I went to Mexico back in early 2012 and brought back a delicious hot sauce. I was sad when it started to run low because I was sure I would never be able to find it again. A quick google search proved me wrong. Argyll Foods was the only store in the city that sold it. So, once I needed to restock, I headed into this little store for the first time. It was one of those places that I had driven by for years and never gave a second look at. This place seems to sell every latino food/spice/sauce you could possibly want but would never even bother looking for in a regular grocery store. I've now gotten my friend hooked on this place - she loves going in every few months and grabbing random hot sauces to try. This weekend I stopped in for the first time in a few months... and to my surprise... they've renovated! Like... I don't just mean they painted the walls, they've taken over the space next to them and the store is now twice as big! The store always has people in it... so I'm happy to see that everyone else knows how fantastic it is too. read more

This is the first Mexican/Latin grocery I have seen and Edmonton and I don't think I have to look any further. An enourmous selection of ground/dried chilies. Local favorite beverages and frozen food favorites for the truly lazy like me. They even have some hard to find fresh stuff like Tamarind. Lastly 100 tortillas for $5.99. Simply awesome. read more

Since our great move north two and half years ago, the husband and I have been fiending for a Mexican grocery--even a crappy one would have done. Thankfully, we now know we don't have to settle, as Argyll Foods/Tienda Latina is great. We discovered an awesome selection of hot sauces (Cholita is my favourite, and this is the only place I've seen it in Edmonton), fresh tomatillos, lovely, melty queso, fresh tortillas from El Mercado, and de la Rosa, an addictive marzipan-y peanut candy. Hubs squeed when he found chicharrones, and I was similarly delighted when I happened upon strawberry Jarritos. After ten minutes of walking down the aisles and haphazardly grabbing items as we remembered we missed them, he said, "We have to leave. I want to buy everything." I do wish they had a selection of fresh peppers instead of dried, as the Mexican varieties are particularly hard to find up here. But I'll take what I can get. If you want a regular convenience store, it's that, too, but the real attraction is all the deliciousness hiding behind the chip and candy racks ... read more

Argyll Foods gets my 5 stars for being the only spot I could find in town with banana leaves! Everywhere else I looked they either did not carry them or some banana leaf monster had been in before me to buy them all. Weird! Anyway, it also carries an array of Latin American products... rows of beans, tortillas and chips, rice, frijoles, hot sauces, tomatillos, queso and so many other goodies are packed in those little grocery shelves. Back to the topic of banana leaves, one package was $1.99 and was enough to make my little pockets to steam minced chicken in and double layer my banana leaf wrapping. read more

I love La Tienda for their fantastic selection of not only the essentials for Latin cooking but also the selection of prepared baking, empanadas, etc. One of the only places in own to find Latin cheeses too! The only reason I haven't rated them higher is because of the incense that is always burning, which makes me have an asthma attack every single time. It is for this reason that I don't ship there as frequently as I would like to. read more

Also known as Argyll Foods I believe, this place has such kind and awesome people and such tasty & aromatic food, but, if you aren't there before noon, :( it's gone! Oh gosh, you have to try it. We located it looking for this amazing spice Tajin classic seasoning - What a lucky find!! The store, but the spice too...which is lime, sweet & spice ... perfect for everything!!! Fruit, meat, seafood, even pasta tastes great with Tajin spice!! We use it for cooking all kinds of things on our Grilling Stones for the barbecue. So great to have a Mexican/Latina place like this in Edmonton, viva Tienda Latina! read more

Stopped in here on a whim and keep returning. I love visiting Mexico and this shop reminds me so much of being there. Beyond all that, the proprietors are very kind and extremely helpful (especially if you have ingredient questions of flavours and uses). I highly recommend this small gem. This place is awesome! I used to live in LA and missed the little latin convenience stores to buy supplies for mexican recipes, so I decided to give this place a try. It doesn't have any produce really but has all the latin dry goods, treats and cheeses one could ever want. The staff is super helpful, and prices are really reasonable. read more
