Tried this place on a whim (because our initial destination was actually closed) and it was pretty solid. Service was good and the food was all hot and fresh. I ordered a combination fajita style dish and it came with chicken, steak, and chorizo with all of the standard accompaniments. When looking for a place to eat in Walkertown, it's slim pickings. We found 2 Mexican restaurants that were top choices and made our way to El Maguey. The weather was beautiful so we requested an outdoor table, the seating area had a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. We sat for approximately 15 minutes until someone stopped by and asked if we had been help, we had not. Our drink order was taken, chips and salsa arrived. As we waited for our drinks, an employee stopped at the table and wanted to know who took us to and how we got to this table. It was a bit awkward and probably not a question you would ask a customer. 20 min later our food arrived....Carnitas and ACP. I am a carnitas fan and could claim to be an expert on how they should be cooked and how they taste. I must say, this meal was a disappointment. Each one of our meals were plain and tasteless. The carnitas looked boiled, not fried, had no seasoning and were rubbery. The chicken on the ACP lacked seasoning as well. They must rely on the smothered cheese to mask the blandness. On several occasions we asked for more chips and salsa, drink refills, these requests needed several attempts. Most of the table decided not to eat and take the food home for a reheat and proper seasoning. It took 3 requests to receive carry out boxes. Not a good experience. From the start, my server had a hard time communicating. I asked for a drink and my server walked away, only to have two other servers come by to finally get my drink order. Then when ordering dinner, I ordered a chicken chimichanga with the rice and the small side salad with sour cream. I immediately knew my server was confused. When my dinner arrived, I was provided a chicken burrito, a double bed of rice and a side of sour cream - not the salad that was listed as a side option. In addition, they tried to charge me an extra $1.99 for this sour cream, after they messed up my order. My husband's beer was also incorrect. The server never offered to refill the salsa and she never refilled my water. Just poor service. My husband ordered ACP, which was decent. I was later telling a family member about my experience and she said the last time she went, her order was also incorrect. read more

Great little restaurant that has good food and fast service. I have been here a few times over the years and the service is always impeccable. The food comes out quickly, steaming hot. For years this was my favorite Mexican restaurant, alas since COVID things have slipped quite a bit. Food is still good, just not as good as it once was. Portion sizes have been cut and I get that a restaurant has to do what it can to control cost and make money...but their prices have also gone through the roof when compared to other Mexican restaurants in the area. I will say the staff is still great and the restaurant has always clean and inviting. All that said, with other equal and less costly option being available I will have to take my $$$ elsewhere. read more

Without fail - every time - we are ignored (have to ask for the basics, chips, salsa, Napkins) and service is slow (regardless how busy they are) and you can expect something is always jacked up when your back there. Don't try flagging anyone down - because they don't even check in with you. There are more than enough workers here, huddled around up front, so let's get off the phone and pay attention to your guests. Never again! I was in NC for training and decided to try Mexican for lunch. I saw the Wine Margarita on the menu and instantly ordered that - how cool! It was very good...but I had to stop at one because otherwise I wouldn't have gone back to class haha. I had the Lunch Pollo Chipotle which was pretty darn good. It came with refried beans (which I'm not a huge fan of) and rice which was good. The chicken was in a creamy chipotle sauce with peppers. I was very happy with my selection! For a small, "Mom and Pop" Mexican place you'll usually have a nice meal here. Nothing really stands out as particularly great, but you can usually get a good meal at an affordable price. Portion sizes are large for the price too. I always have enough to take some home for a smaller meal later. The staff are all very nice and cheerful and the place has a very authentic "Mexican" atmosphere. The murals are nice and the chairs you especially notice have hand carved scenes of life in Mexico it looks like. The place is always very clean and comfortable. They even have a few tables outside on the sidewalk where it's pleasant to eat on a sunny afternoon. The food is typical to most Mexican restaurants with a few American items too. And yes, you can get a hamburger and they're pretty good! So, throw the kids in the car on a night you don't feel like cooking and come have supper. There's not a full bar but the beer's cold and they have specials. read more

It's a strange Walkertown rule about alcohol- not their fault- they do have draft beer as well as bottles, sangria and "wine" margaritas. 99 cent drafts Mon-Thurs. They have a patio for outdoor seating and that's where we usually sit when it is nice- and the waitstaff remembers this :) They also have a large "party room" in the back for groups. Good food but poorly timed -- hubs' food came out with an assurance that mine would be right out. Glad I told him to get started; by the time mine arrived his would have been stone cold. I ordered a to go order and the food was good but looking at my receipt I noticed they are charging for the to go containers... Each one at that.... I questioned them what that charge was they told me they charged for the to go containers.... Is this not considered price gouging during this pandemic? I think this is my new favorite place to get Mexican food. I took my mother here for Mother's Day and we loved it. We've been back several times since. The chairs at each table look to be hand carved with color depictions of people and their lives in Mexico. They're all GORGEOUS and set the tone alongside the big, colorful murals on each wall. The service is always prompt and the servers always have a joke or a dance to share with the table while taking our order. I'm always throughly amused. The ACP is standard, just like every other place, and so is the rest of the menu: standard. But everything always tastes fresh, is always hot and comes out of the kitchen with lightening speed. read more

Please be aware that I have had some amazing Mexican food in Denver and Santa Fe in the last month, so this review may be slanted by what I consider more authentic than most. This version of Mexican food was what I remember as a kid, simple with minimal flavor. It's beginners Mexican food. All of that could be rescued if there had been margaritas for sale, but sadly, it appears El Maguey does not have their full liquor license. This is unforgivable for a Mexican restaurant in my opinion. Add the poorly planned layout and decor and you can safely pass this version of Mexican food.
