Dinner outside with a group tonight. Food, as always, was good- delivered hot . I got pollo tropical which is a huge amount of well prepared food including chicken breast, vegetables, pineapple, chorizo, bacon and cheese dip that came with rice, refried beans and salad as well as excellent corn tortillas. Service was good and it was lovely to be outside on a warm early evening. read more

Tried this place on a whim (because our initial destination was actually closed) and it was pretty solid. Service was good and the food was all hot and fresh. I ordered a combination fajita style dish and it came with chicken, steak, and chorizo with all of the standard accompaniments. The steak was on the bottom and got a little too crispy in places on the skillet. Good to know it's there and we would certainly go back. read more

Food was fine. Service was fine. Nothing that stood out -- besides 1 taco for $3, and 3 for $10. Don't fall for this place's tactics. A bit outrageous. read more

This used to be a nice place to eat with good food. Now they try to over charge. You have to order separately for each meal or will be expected to split 1 small bag of chips/salsa with 4 people or pay for each additional bag. I ordered a meal with 2 items and only got one, they refused to fix it so I will never eat here again. read more

Didn't see the nachos I wanted and these guys made me custom nachos and didn't crush me with extra cost. Great food and service. I've been here several times and I've never had a complaint. This is a good place. read more

We absolutely love this place. Everything we have ordered has been delicious. Street Tacos, burritos, enchiladas, salsa, choriqueso (spelling?), service and atmosphere. read more

When looking for a place to eat in Walkertown, it's slim pickings. We found 2 Mexican restaurants that were top choices and made our way to El Maguey. The weather was beautiful so we requested an outdoor table, the seating area had a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. We sat for approximately 15 minutes until someone stopped by and asked if we had been help, we had not. Our drink order was taken, chips and salsa arrived. As we waited for our drinks, an employee stopped at the table and wanted to know who took us to and how we got to this table. It was a bit awkward and probably not a question you would ask a customer. 20 min later our food arrived....Carnitas and ACP. I am a carnitas fan and could claim to be an expert on how they should be cooked and how they taste. I must say, this meal was a disappointment. Each one of our meals were plain and tasteless. The carnitas looked boiled, not fried, had no seasoning and were rubbery. The chicken on the ACP lacked seasoning as well. They must rely on the smothered cheese to mask the blandness. On several occasions we asked for more chips and salsa, drink refills, these requests needed several attempts. Most of the table decided not to eat and take the food home for a reheat and proper seasoning. It took 3 requests to receive carry out boxes. El Maguey....I apologize for the brutally honest review, hoping this will help with future customer experiences. read more

Not a good experience. From the start, my server had a hard time communicating. I asked for a drink and my server walked away, only to have two other servers come by to finally get my drink order. Then when ordering dinner, I ordered a chicken chimichanga with the rice and the small side salad with sour cream. I immediately knew my server was confused. When my dinner arrived, I was provided a chicken burrito, a double bed of rice and a side of sour cream - not the salad that was listed as a side option. In addition, they tried to charge me an extra $1.99 for this sour cream, after they messed up my order. My husband's beer was also incorrect. The server never offered to refill the salsa and she never refilled my water. Just poor service. My husband ordered ACP, which was decent. I was later telling a family member about my experience and she said the last time she went, her order was also incorrect. read more

Great little restaurant that has good food and fast service. I have been here a few times over the years and the service is always impeccable. The food comes out quickly, steaming hot. The Chicken De Pollo is delicious. It has green/red peppers with tomatoes and comes with 2 tortillas. Outdoor seating is cozy when the weather permits. read more

For years this was my favorite Mexican restaurant, alas since COVID things have slipped quite a bit. Food is still good, just not as good as it once was. Portion sizes have been cut and I get that a restaurant has to do what it can to control cost and make money...but their prices have also gone through the roof when compared to other Mexican restaurants in the area. I will say the staff is still great and the restaurant has always clean and inviting. All that said, with other equal and less costly option being available I will have to take my $$$ elsewhere. read more

I love this restaurant the workers are great. The food is excellent. You simply must eat here they give large portions as well. Even if you order a lunch it's still huge. The place is clean their authentic music is playing. Check it out . You will be glad you did. read more

Usually a favorite of ours. Usually Fast (not this time) and always good tasty. Sadly If you sit in the back (anywhere past the bar) you can expect service to SUCK! Without fail - every time - we are ignored (have to ask for the basics, chips, salsa, Napkins) and service is slow (regardless how busy they are) and you can expect something is always jacked up when your back there. Don't try flagging anyone down - because they don't even check in with you. There are more than enough workers here, huddled around up front, so let's get off the phone and pay attention to your guests. Never again! Don't even try to sit us back there - We sit up front or we will just go somewhere else. read more

Food was really good and tasty, service was a fast and attentive and enjoyed the time there.

Great Mexican food. The waitress was very attentive and pleasant. The restaurant was busy being Labor Day weekend and it was well staffed.

Frequent visitor when living in the Winston area, many many visits to El Maguey, a great place to eat Mexican food in Winston.

It was a cute restaurant the food was normal nothing that really blew my mind the staff was nice but they kept forgetting stuff like we had 5 different waiters come up to us and ask us for our drink order after already ordering it & then some little girl with an attitude who I think was the hostess came up to us and was like " oh just so u know this isn't a full service bar " I thought that was rude to assume we were drinking alcohol when we had literally ordered 2 agua frescas lmfao we were also the literal only 2 people in the restaurant at the time so it amazes me how forgetful and rude they were to their only customers /: don't waste ur time there's better Mexican food in the area ! read more

Great Mexican food! I always get the ACP dish! So good!! The chips & salsa are really good too! Love it!

This is probably the greasiest and worst seasoned Mexican food I've had in a very long time. I honestly could have ate at Taco Bell and had a better, less greasy/unhealthy experience... will not go back. read more

Fast and friendly service. Good prices, and and very good food good food period of course this isn't 100% authentic Mexican food food, but it is very good "Americanized" Mexican. Lunchtime specials are available yeah it's pretty good pricing. When the weather's nice, they have an outdoor area yeah which is quite nice for a restaurant in a strip mall read more

Pleasant experiences overall. I've visited here multiple times for both dine-in & take out. It's worth noting that at this location there is no liquor. Good food. Great service. Beer is reasonably priced. Typical Mexican food for the area but consistently good.

Host staff is terrible. Pretty good food, though in dining. Take out experience was awful

Love this place! Been eating here since I was a child. And the food does not disappoint.

I was in NC for training and decided to try Mexican for lunch. I saw the Wine Margarita on the menu and instantly ordered that - how cool! It was very good...but I had to stop at one because otherwise I wouldn't have gone back to class haha. I had the Lunch Pollo Chipotle which was pretty darn good. It came with refried beans (which I'm not a huge fan of) and rice which was good. The chicken was in a creamy chipotle sauce with peppers. I was very happy with my selection! The service was outstanding and they were pretty busy, so they're obviously doing something right! read more

Scrumptious mexican food- try the chorizo-cheese dip with your chips-YUM!!!! Owner Antonio is very friendly and always makes time to say hello. Service is quick and prices are very reasonable. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that they do do not serve booze which is weird considering it is named after the plant tequila comes from! It's a strange Walkertown rule about alcohol- not their fault- they do have draft beer as well as bottles, sangria and "wine" margaritas. 99 cent drafts Mon-Thurs. They have a patio for outdoor seating and that's where we usually sit when it is nice- and the waitstaff remembers this :) They also have a large "party room" in the back for groups. Food just isn't the best Mexican I've had in recent years- quality seems to have down a tad but it's ok! read more

Good food but poorly timed -- hubs' food came out with an assurance that mine would be right out. Glad I told him to get started; by the time mine arrived his would have been stone cold. As it was, it was nearly all consumed (by him! I did not eat half his meal!) by the time mine arrived. It was really tasty, though; it would have to be to get high marks despite ill timing. The owner and our server were both profusely apologetic for the timing. read more

For a small, "Mom and Pop" Mexican place you'll usually have a nice meal here. Nothing really stands out as particularly great, but you can usually get a good meal at an affordable price. Portion sizes are large for the price too. I always have enough to take some home for a smaller meal later. The staff are all very nice and cheerful and the place has a very authentic "Mexican" atmosphere. The murals are nice and the chairs you especially notice have hand carved scenes of life in Mexico it looks like. The place is always very clean and comfortable. They even have a few tables outside on the sidewalk where it's pleasant to eat on a sunny afternoon. The food is typical to most Mexican restaurants with a few American items too. And yes, you can get a hamburger and they're pretty good! So, throw the kids in the car on a night you don't feel like cooking and come have supper. There's not a full bar but the beer's cold and they have specials. read more

The food was amazing and the service was amazing bc they were so nice and ambiance was amazing

I ordered a to go order and the food was good but looking at my receipt I noticed they are charging for the to go containers... Each one at that.... I questioned them what that charge was they told me they charged for the to go containers.... Is this not considered price gouging during this pandemic? Do I need to take my own containers in to save money considering my bill was almost $75? I will never patronize this restaurant again just for that greedy behavior!!!!! read more

Where to begin. Maybe with the "wine" margaritas? FYI, if anyone can explain that to me, I will be their friend for life. Maybe with the "eat and get the hell out" fast brand of service? Maybe with the average food? All of this leaves me with a "meh" in my brain still seeking good Mexican food in the Winston-Salem area. Please be aware that I have had some amazing Mexican food in Denver and Santa Fe in the last month, so this review may be slanted by what I consider more authentic than most. This version of Mexican food was what I remember as a kid, simple with minimal flavor. It's beginners Mexican food. All of that could be rescued if there had been margaritas for sale, but sadly, it appears El Maguey does not have their full liquor license. This is unforgivable for a Mexican restaurant in my opinion. Add the poorly planned layout and decor and you can safely pass this version of Mexican food. Reset your Yelp and start looking elsewhere. read more

I think this is my new favorite place to get Mexican food. I took my mother here for Mother's Day and we loved it. We've been back several times since. The chairs at each table look to be hand carved with color depictions of people and their lives in Mexico. They're all GORGEOUS and set the tone alongside the big, colorful murals on each wall. The service is always prompt and the servers always have a joke or a dance to share with the table while taking our order. I'm always throughly amused. The ACP is standard, just like every other place, and so is the rest of the menu: standard. But everything always tastes fresh, is always hot and comes out of the kitchen with lightening speed. read more

We eat here quite often since my job is only about 10 mins from this place and noticed I haven't reviewed it before! For starters, the atmosphere is great. Inside of the restaurant looks great and there is a newly updated outside patio as well. As you walk in, on the right, there are their daily specials. All of which are priced right around what you would expect for a Mexican restaurant. Now on to the food. The food here is great. They have a pretty big menu and lots to choose from. I usually go for the Taco Supremos or the Chicken Nachos. Either of which is a great choice. You get plenty of food on the plate and the wait staff are great. They have never let my cup get half empty before they were refilling it. If you are looking for a new Mexican restaurant to check out, then put El Maguey's on your list. It's A+. read more

El Maguey offers some good reasonably priced mexican fare. Friendly and fast wait staff get you what you need. The restaurant is clean as are the restrooms. Great parking. Outdoor seating.
