We love Monte De Rey! We go to this location and the one across town. We nearly get the same thing every time and the food is always fresh, hot, delicious, and consistent. If you like a regular ACP, they have a great one. I've recently gotten hooked on the Pollo Chipotle and it is so yummy! We love all of the servers we have at both locations that we frequent! I came here today to try their Huevos Rancheros. Getting the order taken proved to be a bit of an ordeal - it took over 10 minutes to have my order taken, and I had a great deal of trouble understanding the gentleman who did take the order. The ordering system is flawed - there was just the 1 person taking orders and bringing the food and drink. This and a slow kitchen resulted is waits for everyone. It took well over 20 minutes to get my meal, but when it did arrive it was decently done, but like all versions I've tried, it was far from an authentic dish. The ranchero sauce was a deep red, a richer red color than I have seen before in this sauce. It was rather chunky and was really mild, I doubt there were any peppers ( most often jalapeños are used) in the sauce I was served. While the eggs were not overcooked ( both yolks were runny), the tortillas were separate and were not fried. And the refried beans were separate, as well! The only items that were combined were the eggs and the sauce. This was not a bad dish, but neither was it Huevos Rancheros. One of the key elements that makes the authentic version such a hardy classic is the combination of tastes and textures from the combination of ingredients. And one of those important items are the fried eggs with the yolks still runny - this adds a certain creaminess to the underlying sauce. My wife and I placed an order to pick up: 2 combination dinners. When I arrived I noticed that the order was missing the rice and beans for each order. I went back inside and asked if I could pay for the rice and beans and get them to go. I was told over and over that we placed the order incorrectly and that I was wrong. Friendly enough service, but not sure I would call this mexican? Perhaps Ameri-Mex, very basic and the food looked rushed, no presentation at all. Bland and not appealing. Ordered a basic bean dip and it was sad, mostly a watery cheese mess and almost no beans? We did not eat it and a complete waste of money. Food was not good, ill prepared, very bland and subpar. My friends lunch looked bad, not appetizing at all and my enchilada, chili relleno and beans plate was a joke. It was not a chili relleno by any traditional standards, just a pile of cheese, and I could not decern a pablano at all in the pile of cheesy goo. The enchilada was okay but very ordinary and the beans were just gross. Cannot recommend, we left the food sitting and paid. 1 Star food, rounded up for the friendly staff otherwise a total waste of time and money. This is not a real mexican food restaurant. We wanted to grab something to eat that was close and convenient. We had heard good things about Monte De Ray as well so off we went. We arrived about 3pm and it appeared busier than we would have expected. We were seated right away in a booth near the front, immediately provided menus and offered drinks. As we walked in, it appears they occupy three or more units with frontage in this strip mall because we saw at least two entrance doors not in use. We began to peruse the menu which is huge. We each looked for items we normally get at Mexican restaurants. We were provided chips and salsa and had to ask our server to give us more time to look at the menu. The salsa was not extremely chunky which is what I prefer and it had a very nice flavor. When our server returned, my wife chose the shrimp fajitas with a side of guacamole and I chose the Chili Colorado with double rice and no beans. Our meals arrived in a timely manner and looked great, the fajitas were sizzling and my wife thought the chunky guacamole looked great. We each enjoyed our meals but the service was just okay, it felt like we had to seek out our server. Overall it was a decent experience but nothing blew our socks off. read more

Great staff and excellent food! I have been to this particular branch of Mont de Rey restaurant multiple times and the food and staff are consistently on point in a relaxed manner. Expect big portions on most dishes at a reasonable price. The menu has many selections to choose from and lots of beverages for kids and adults to choose from. We felt like trying a new Mexican restaurant in the Clemmons area. It was packed when we arrived, they have indoor and outdoor seating. The customer service was phenomenal and they were very attentive. The indoor decoration reminded me of places in Latin America because of the beautiful bright colors that identify the latino culture. The salsa was okay. I didn't taste much alcohol in the margarita, it tasted more like mango juice. I ordered the camarones Jalisco and I wasn't very impressed w the food. We had the Burrito California, Quesabirria, and guacamole appetizer. Chips and salsa: the chips and salsa were better than average. They brought the chips out warm which I like. Guacamole: The presentation wasn't anything spectacular so I was skeptical but the taste was really good. Quesabirria: this was very good there was a hint of a sweet flavor that I could have done without but overall good. Burrito California: I ordered the steak burrito and this was phenomenal. I have lived in both Texas and Arizona and I believe this may be the best burrito that I have ever had. The portion is very large but the steak was perfect. I give a 10/10. Monte de Rey serves up some pretty tasty tex-mex standards at very affordable prices, and provides portions that definitely won't have you leaving hungry. What's not to like? On top of all of that, the restaurant is always clean and decorated with very vibrant colors, and sports an attentive staff that keeps your drinks full and the chip basket overflowing. I have been here about three times so far, and haven't deviated much from what I know to be good... the lunch size fajitas Texanas. You get enough for three tortillas worth of filling (but they only give you two, so be prepared for some chip scooping!) and the meat is grilled with a nice array of spices to the right doneness. On top of that, the Texanas style gives you about 5 to 6 medium size shrimp, which I have yet to be served overcooked in any way. At just a shade over eight bucks, its hard to argue with the value here. This place has become a lunchtime staple for me, and I don't anticipate that changing anytime soon. I don't eat out a lot, but most of the time they screw up the bill. We usually eat here with extended family, so there will easily be more than 10 of us. Still, you have to be super aware what your bill details and always ask if it doesn't make sense. There has been extra food charged, extra drinks, and they will argue every time. I seriously am considering taking a picture of my table once the food comes out bc how can you argue this when it's their word against yours? They always believe what the server detailed, like they could never make mistakes. I also had a incident when I ordered togo over the phone. This was while covid was in full swing (so maybe 2021 or 2022?) and realized later they put 5 (yes five) to go charges of $1.50 each on my bill. It was an order for 4 people with only 4 meals, and no - never was told they had "to go" charges. I even always tip at least 20%, even for togo, so that ticked me off. If my extended family didn't love their food, I wouldn't step in ever again. Honestly, the taste of their food is the only saving grace here because it tastes authentic, and I know authentic as I grew up and lived in Texas with the best Mexican food this side of the border. read more

A sister (or brother?) restaurant to the Monte De Rey on Harper Road, the service here is just as friendly and accurate. The food/menu is standard Mexican fare, but they give you a green salsa and a red one when you ask for salsa picante. The green is DELICIOUS....I'm kinda mad I never got this at the Harper Road location. My favorites here are the Enchilada Lovers (five cheese enchiladas covered in sauce, more cheese, and grilled chicken), Sopes (carne asada...yum), and Pollo Jalisco. Maria who is very nice. The manager told me to come back and pick up the AC P with steak because they made it with chicken. I understand things happen. I drive all the way out the next day. The guy first would not even talk to me he stayed on the phone for a good 15 minutes then when I told him he said no, I still had to pay. I told him no it was a remake. He argue with me in front of everybody in the restaurant then he told me he had to call her. He called her on speaker and I said see and then he told her everything was fine but when he got off he still continue to yell at me and try to charge me for my drink I left and I really hope this review is read he does not know how to speak to customers!!! read more

If you're super into giving money to a restaurant that aggressively treats innocent women like garbage, don't read this review. If you're against handing over your dollars to bullies, though, read on. We've been eating here for years. Tonight, though, the staff finally showed their true colors. The waitstaff lied to the manager in order to avoid telling the manager they'd made a mistake. The manager then proceeded to aggressively accost my girlfriend and her elderly guest, accusing the two ladies of lying. They'd paid for their meal, left a generous tip, and simply wanted to finish their conversation a little while longer. The chips they were both offered and given were snatched away minutes later with no n explanation. Their water glasses stayed empty. The waitstaff were aggressive, rude, and resentful. The manager was childish, violent, and condescending. Caveat emptor: they want your money, and then they want you gone. They're not the warm personalities you've seen time after time. They're mean, spiteful, and greedy. I only wish I could have been with my girlfriend and her guest. I'm sure they would have thought twice about treating the three of us the way they decided to treat two responsible, honest, and pleasant ladies. As it currently stands, however, it looks like I'll never have the chance to find out. Because we don't pay bullies. And that's the way the staff here treats paying customers. read more

We had lunch at today at Monte De Ray for the first time, and man, was it good! We started our meal like a couple picky customers and ordered freshly-made guacamole. I don't know if they usually squeeze their guac from a caulking tube or not, but too many times in NC in February that's what you're going to get, so we asked if they could make us some fresh and chunky guac without chilies. My bride can't handle the heat, and there was a bowl of salsa in the table that would add the heat I need. the server was polite and happy and brought us a small bowl that was filled with a mix of freshly chopped cilantro, onions and avocado dressed with just the right amount of lime juice. Well done! We ordered Diet Coke but were informed that they served Diet Pepsi. Since we are both trying to avoid sugar when the server returned we confirmed that it was in fact diet. She assured us that it was, and later when she brought refills to the table I asked once again "Diet?" and she playfully said "That's enough diet for you. This is regular Pepsi". My faced dropped and I said "Really?" and she laughed and said "No, it's diet". From that point on every time she dropped by she asked "Can I refill your (fill in the blank)" that ranged from Mountain Dew, water, Dr Pepper, wine, but never "diet". She was a hoot and always brought the correct drink. One important rule when ordering off a Mexican menu is to avoid anything with a number in its name. I laugh when I read comments about how authentic or unauthentic a Mexican restaurant is when some of the best French food I've ever enjoyed was in Mexico City! Monte De Ray's food was fresh and delicious. I noticed that right below the numbered lunch menu items they had a list of sever or so variations on the taco that can be ordered as part of a trio of tacos, including beef tongue, liver, etc. I had the al pastor (small, highly seasoned chunks of pork) , the carnitas (roasted pork roast) and the babacoa (spicy beef bbq). They arrived at the table covered with a piece of aluminum foil and accompanied by a second plate with Mexican rice and refried beans and a THIRD plate holding a lime, a small bowl of a spicy and tasty sauce and a small bowl of chopped onions and cilantro. I uploaded a pic from my phone app if you are interested in seeing my plate. Note that these tacos are served in the style of Mexico, meaning that they are each served on two soft corn tortillas. I'm sure they would put them on a fried corn tortilla or in flour tortillas, but if that's what you want you'll need to ask when ordering. In all it was an excellent meal and the service was as quick and pleasant as can be. Why four stars? Because four is great and I reserve a star for that place that knocks my socks off. I just finished eating here and had the absolute worst experience. I ordered a combination plate with one enchilada one tamale with rice and beans. I took about 4 bites of my food before finding a thick course black hair in my tamale. Upon notifying the server a manager was brought to my table with a younger guy to translate. Here they tried to tell me that the hair I found in my food was silk from the corn husk used to make my tamale. I immediately informed them that I have been a chef for 10 years and have made tamales and that was no silk. They continued to insist that it was not a hair. I got my check and proceeded to the counter my wife's food was fine so I was definitely willing to pay for everything else but I noticed my plate that I was unable to eat was still on my check. When I got to the counter the same manager was there and left before I got to the front of the line. I informed the girl behind the counter what had happened and that I would not be paying for my plate. She also proceeds to argue with me and tell me that was not a hair which I know very well the difference between corn silk and a human hair. She begrudgingly took it off my check and was noticeably upset about it. This may be the worst customer service experience I have ever been a part of. No chance in hell I will ever eat here again and I advise anyone reading this to steer clear. Completely unacceptable! read more

Used to eat here quite a bit. However, on our last visit the server gave himself an extra tip on our credit card. I don't know if this was a mistake or intentional, but I went in when I saw what had happened. The manager gave me my money back for the difference on what we had actually left as a tip (which was not stingy), and said that he couldn't believe I would come in for a few dollars.
