Birria Stew - more red tint here than in most!
Fred B.

I have only visited this location of a small chain of Mexican restaurants once, though I did dine at the location in Clemmons, also once - that will suffice I think! While the meal was not bad (Birria Stew), the experience was not all that good - service was slow and indifferent! The way it is configured, and where it is located, makes this a spot hard to really be comfortable with. While Birria Tacos have become all the rage, popping up everywhere over the last several years, the actual Birria Stew from which the tacos and consommé are derived is not found on many menus in the area. The dish as prepared in our area, and in most of the US, differs from the traditional versions found in the Mexican state of Jalisco, and is more in line with those that come from Tijuana, using beef and more liquid. Beef is the meat most often used here, while in Mexico the meat is more often goat, cow's head, even mutton. Goat was introduced in Mexico by Cortes and thrived. The Spanish were not enthralled by the toughness and strong flavor of the goat meat - the Spanish word birria means worthless or rubbish! The makeup of spices and other items may vary some, while the constant ingredient is a healthy amount of dried, red chiles (roasted and then pureed), providing the definitive red tint to the stew, and thus the consommé. Vinegar, cumin, Mexican oregano, onions, cilantro, and garlic are also common items. The Birria Stew prepared by this restaurant ( though there is more red pepper tint and taste here than most) (and the Birria Tacos here and at other area restaurants) simply is not the authentic version some want to label it - not saying it is bad, just don't throw around the term authentic, without first identifying what authentic comprises! My late wife and I would look at each other after visiting a restaurant and ask "would you come back" - here I would not, and it is not a one dish thing!i

Excellent beef tacos!

Very good food, decent service, and even better company. If I'm back in WS, I'll probably visit again.

Classic Margarita

Just okay. This location in the Harris Teeter shopping center does, at least, have better food than the location in Clemmons in my opinion. The salsa and rice are good, which were two of my biggest qualms about the Clemmons location. Not sure why they seem to be so different. This location is a little inconvenient, as it's located in the middle of the shopping center. Guests who would require handicap parking, I'm not really sure that there is any. Just something to be aware of. I sat outside on the patio which was very nice, and dog friendly. It seemed that all the servers were kind of floating around the patio, but we went a solid 20 minutes without chips. The queso was cold by the time they came out and I would expect chips to be the first thing on the table. The drinks didn't taste like they'd been made with a syrupy artificial margarita mix, but they just weren't the best. The salsa is very fresh and delicious. The guacamole had great flavor but the texture was a little weird for me. I expect a fresh, chunky guacamole, and this one was more smooth which almost made me feel like it wasn't fresh. It reminded me of the packaged kind you purchase in the store. I still really liked the flavor, but some fresh chunky texture would help. I ordered the Quesabirria as my entree and it was REALLY good! It came with 3 tacos, double wrapped in a yummy corn tortilla. It had been griddled with the delicious consommé, and packed to the brim with tender, flavorful meat and melty cheese. The consommé was thick and hearty, it really clung to the tortilla, it was great. I love the cilantro and onions in the broth. I personally would've loved extra cilantro and onions on the tacos themselves, but I suppose I could've asked for that. I ordered a side of rice as well and they brought me fries at first. It didn't take a terribly long time for them to bring the rice after this mishap, for which I was grateful. The rice was good, but not my favorite. It could've had a little more flavor! My friend got the ACP Texano and she enjoyed it. I've definitely had some good experiences at Monte D's, but sadly I've never been just BLOWN AWAY. It's easy and quick in a pinch, but with a surplus of similar restaurants in the area, I'm not sure this one stands up against the others. I enjoy the food but there's a bit of work to be done to get to that level of great!

Lunch fajitas Texanas, bueno!

Solid choice for your mexican food fix on this side of town for sure! Service is always attentive, food is consistently good, and portions are generous. The restaurant itself is tucked back in the middle of the shopping center, you'll see it when you enter, but will need to park off to either the left or right side. Guests with mobility problems will probably prefer to be dropped off in front, because otherwise you've got a small walk with some hills and stairs. I typically go for lunch and get the lunch fajitas texanas. More than enough for a dinner portion really, plenty of both grilled meat and veggies, and your usual accouterments of beans, rice, salad. Everything is well season, served sizzling hot even though they don't bring out the skillet at lunch time. Solid chips and salsa. What's not to like?

Tacos de Carne Asada

This place is bomb! Of course, they had great chips and salsa to start. I got carne asada tacos and they were so tasty. The meat was seasoned well and was a good portion size. They have late hours and not too crowded, we were happy we tried this place out!

We eat here often. We had dinner on Thursday as a family here. In need of some quick dinner, close to home. We had great service. The food was yummy as always. The fajita quesadilla is enormous. Everyone enjoyed their food. Chips and salsa here are always fresh. The margarita is great here. Doesn't just taste like sprite. The lunch specials are great, although we don't go for lunch often. We like the outside space they have available. We never have any issues here.

Fajitas Texans
David F.

Monte De Rey has some of the best Mexican in Winston Salem. The chips and salsa were hot and fresh. The fajitas were cooked to perfection! The fried fish with garlic sauce tasted so good! If you are looking for Mexican food this is your place! Be sure and try the flan for desert!

Always great food. The service is fast too. The guacamole regional is the best appetizer. Be sure a squeeze the lime into it.

Y'all have heard of seafood boils. Some call them Low Country Boils. I call this the LOWER Country…read moreBoil. Mariscada en Bolsa. Seafood in a bag. Not only did I have the pleasure of trying this absolutely amazing dish, I had the pleasure of having leftovers. Let me tell y'all. This? This is food. This is where culture means Cajun. This is where innovation meets culinary. A quick run down of what we're looking at here. First, I have the seafood boat. A LITERAL boat topped with a fish as the sail. Ugly fish staring at me, but absolutely delicious. Crispy. Yummy. The boat had the BEST ceviche I've ever had the pleasure of devouring. Fresh, seafoody, and scrumptious. Pair this with crab, extremely crispy fried shrimp, oysters, more shrimp, and so many things I could write a post about just this item and still feel like it's not enough. Second, I have the House Sauce Seafood Boil. Now, this is just the prototype. They're also wanting to add sausage to this, make different types, as well as do a headless shrimp version. This was... What can I say? Delicious? Juicy? Scrumptious? What I do know to say is this: I'd buy it again. It was massive, it was filling, it was messy. Last and not least, we have the Super Fajitas. 4 kinds of meat, vegetables, tortillas. This is a meat lover's dream with sour cream. Delectable. Sizzling. Fresh. Mmm. Leftovers. The fancy drink? Locarita. Pink Flamingo or something like that. That was allllll my wife's and she savored every sip. There was more than enough food here. We ended up with enough leftovers to last us a year, I swear. Try it out. Let me know. Let's geek out about fresh food from a fantastic staff with the best food, and honestly, the best family environment. Bonus picture of my wife kissing the ugly fish. She's my better half and the more adventurous eater.

The restaurant is beautiful, the atmosphere is warm, and the energy is just good. You can tell immediately that a lot of heart, time, and pride went into creating this space. We originally planned on getting queso and chips, but the owner recommended the seafood dip instead... and I'm thankful we listened. It was creamy, rich, and loaded with seafood. So good that at times we were literally asking each other, "Wait... what seafood is this?" -- and we didn't care because every bite was amazing. Then came the Barco El Patrón seafood boat, and whew. That thing is no joke. The presentation alone is impressive, but the flavor and portion size took it to another level. This is absolutely a shareable dish -- enough food for multiple people -- and you can tell a lot of effort goes into making it just right. My birria taquitos were hands down the best birria I've had in North Carolina. Crispy, flavorful, perfectly seasoned, and cooked with care. Every bite was worth it. And let's talk about the drinks. I had a cocktail flight created by Erica, and every single one was delicious. Balanced, smooth, and full of flavor -- not overly strong, just made really well. I enjoyed all four without feeling overwhelmed, which says a lot. But honestly, what stood out the most was the hospitality. Erica and her husband were kind, attentive, and genuinely thankful that we were there. They even refused our tips, which just shows the type of people they are. You can feel the love they have for their business and their customers. This is the kind of place you're happy to support. Amazing food, great drinks, beautiful atmosphere, and people who truly care. We'll definitely be back.

The ordering system is flawed - there was just the 1 person taking orders and bringing the food and drink. This and a slow kitchen resulted is waits for everyone. It took well over 20 minutes to get my meal, but when it did arrive it was decently done, but like all versions I've tried, it was far from an authentic dish. The ranchero sauce was a deep red, a richer red color than I have seen before in this sauce. It was rather chunky and was really mild, I doubt there were any peppers ( most often jalapeños are used) in the sauce I was served. While the eggs were not overcooked ( both yolks were runny), the tortillas were separate and were not fried. And the refried beans were separate, as well! The only items that were combined were the eggs and the sauce. This was not a bad dish, but neither was it Huevos Rancheros. One of the key elements that makes the authentic version such a hardy classic is the combination of tastes and textures from the combination of ingredients. And one of those important items are the fried eggs with the yolks still runny - this adds a certain creaminess to the underlying sauce. I'll keep looking for an acceptable version of this dish.

From the moment we sat down, the food just kept coming--and everything was fresh, hot, and full of flavor. We tried a variety of dishes including quesadillas, taquitos, tacos (steak, carnitas, and beef), a burrito we shared, and even a sizzling skillet that was SO good. You could tell the food wasn't just sitting--it was coming out fresh and made with care. The margaritas were definitely a highlight. They had a wide variety, and the drinks were flowing all night. I personally had a skinny margarita (recommended by our waitress), and it did not disappoint. One thing I really appreciated was them giving us a preview of their weekend brunch menu. They had pancakes, eggs, and even brunch-only refreshers for those who don't drink, which I thought was a nice touch and shows they're thinking about all types of guests. Beyond the food, it was nice hearing the story behind the restaurant and how the name Ma'Luz was inspired by family. You can tell they take pride in what they've built and their presence in the Triad. Overall, it was a great night with great food, strong drinks, and a welcoming atmosphere. I would definitely come back--especially to try more of the menu (and next time I'm getting a margarita flight because I missed out ).
