The cultural decor inside is great, makes me appreciate Mexican traditions. The portions are generous (even their lunch items). I have only visited this location of a small chain of Mexican restaurants once, though I did dine at the location in Clemmons, also once - that will suffice I think! While the meal was not bad (Birria Stew), the experience was not all that good - service was slow and indifferent! The way it is configured, and where it is located, makes this a spot hard to really be comfortable with. While Birria Tacos have become all the rage, popping up everywhere over the last several years, the actual Birria Stew from which the tacos and consommé are derived is not found on many menus in the area. The dish as prepared in our area, and in most of the US, differs from the traditional versions found in the Mexican state of Jalisco, and is more in line with those that come from Tijuana, using beef and more liquid. Beef is the meat most often used here, while in Mexico the meat is more often goat, cow's head, even mutton. Goat was introduced in Mexico by Cortes and thrived. The Spanish were not enthralled by the toughness and strong flavor of the goat meat - the Spanish word birria means worthless or rubbish! The makeup of spices and other items may vary some, while the constant ingredient is a healthy amount of dried, red chiles (roasted and then pureed), providing the definitive red tint to the stew, and thus the consommé. Vinegar, cumin, Mexican oregano, onions, cilantro, and garlic are also common items. The Birria Stew prepared by this restaurant ( though there is more red pepper tint and taste here than most) (and the Birria Tacos here and at other area restaurants) simply is not the authentic version some want to label it - not saying it is bad, just don't throw around the term authentic, without first identifying what authentic comprises! Very weird experience, I've been here multiple times and for some reason today it was just a very uncomfortable experience for my whole family. We kept getting stares throughout the whole time we were there. And when we went to check out we asked to see the bill, and when we asked to look at it she gave us a nasty look. Then some other worker came up to us while we were eating and kept apologizing and when we asked what for, she just kinda looked at us. Just okay. This location in the Harris Teeter shopping center does, at least, have better food than the location in Clemmons in my opinion. The salsa and rice are good, which were two of my biggest qualms about the Clemmons location. Not sure why they seem to be so different. This location is a little inconvenient, as it's located in the middle of the shopping center. Guests who would require handicap parking, I'm not really sure that there is any. Just something to be aware of. I sat outside on the patio which was very nice, and dog friendly. It seemed that all the servers were kind of floating around the patio, but we went a solid 20 minutes without chips. The queso was cold by the time they came out and I would expect chips to be the first thing on the table. The drinks didn't taste like they'd been made with a syrupy artificial margarita mix, but they just weren't the best. The salsa is very fresh and delicious. The guacamole had great flavor but the texture was a little weird for me. I expect a fresh, chunky guacamole, and this one was more smooth which almost made me feel like it wasn't fresh. It reminded me of the packaged kind you purchase in the store. I still really liked the flavor, but some fresh chunky texture would help. I ordered the Quesabirria as my entree and it was REALLY good! It came with 3 tacos, double wrapped in a yummy corn tortilla. It had been griddled with the delicious consommé, and packed to the brim with tender, flavorful meat and melty cheese. The consommé was thick and hearty, it really clung to the tortilla, it was great. I love the cilantro and onions in the broth. I personally would've loved extra cilantro and onions on the tacos themselves, but I suppose I could've asked for that. I ordered a side of rice as well and they brought me fries at first. It didn't take a terribly long time for them to bring the rice after this mishap, for which I was grateful. The rice was good, but not my favorite. It could've had a little more flavor! My friend got the ACP Texano and she enjoyed it. I've definitely had some good experiences at Monte D's, but sadly I've never been just BLOWN AWAY. It's easy and quick in a pinch, but with a surplus of similar restaurants in the area, I'm not sure this one stands up against the others. Solid choice for your mexican food fix on this side of town for sure! Service is always attentive, food is consistently good, and portions are generous. The restaurant itself is tucked back in the middle of the shopping center, you'll see it when you enter, but will need to park off to either the left or right side. Guests with mobility problems will probably prefer to be dropped off in front, because otherwise you've got a small walk with some hills and stairs. I typically go for lunch and get the lunch fajitas texanas. More than enough for a dinner portion really, plenty of both grilled meat and veggies, and your usual accouterments of beans, rice, salad. This is the second time we've done a pickup order online. The food is pretty good and the serving sizes are generous. My only complaints are the presentation of the food and the customer service. There is nothing written on the containers to let you know which order is which. This is also the second time I've ordered the chimichangas and they come buried under a liquidy mixture of the toppings (beans, guacamole, sour cream, cheese sauce, etc). It's almost soup. The flavors are still good, but way too runny. My husband's burrito was also fairly soggy from all of the juices and it wasn't wrapped well at all. I have eaten here a few times and either it used to be better, or I ordered the wrong dish, or having eaten at Domingo's in Mocksville I expect better now. Most recent visit I ordered the carnitas bonitas (or something similarly named). It was some bland, sauceless pork with onions and peppers arrayed around it like a flower. No tortillas, no jalapenos. My husband and I went to Monte Del Rey for dinner on Valentine's Day. We were promptly seated despite arriving at 5:45 on a high volume restaurant "holiday". As soon as we were seated we were greeted with chips and salsa. The salsa was nice and acidic without too much heat for my sensitive stomach...even when it's incindiary I eat it, lol. I ordered a Margarita which was a special. It was large, not too strong but I could still taste the tequila, which I like. For dinner I ordered chicken and shrimp fajitas, which were only about $1 more than just chicken. Given the small price change I wasn't expecting much shrimp. I was wrong! There was SO MUCH shrimp, and it was delicious and properly deveined. I had so much i shared wuth the hubby. There were a ton of onions and peppers too, plenty for two. The rice and beans were yummy too. I loved the guacamole, I could have eaten a giant bowl of it. They did not come with cheese, which is ok because I wouldn't have used it on shrimp anyway. My husband got beef fajitas. He said they were F'ing fantastic! There was a mariachi band tonight, which was a fun touch! This will definitely be our new go to for Mexican food. When I received it, it was chicken not ground beef, it had double sour cream and double guacamole. I called and the manager told me it was the driver's fault. I was impressed by Monte De Rey considering its lack of advertising and the relatively few reviews here on Yelp. To put things succinctly: It's a casual sit-down Mexican restaurant with a giant menu, good prices, and prompt service. My wife's "soft chimichangas" are the reason this place gets 5-stars. WONDERFUL soft shredded beef with a grand mix of guacamole, cheese, lettuce, tortilla skin, tomato sauce, beans, and probably quite a bit more. It was amazing and huge. I was just as happy eating the leftovers the next morning. I ordered the cerviche with shrimp which I "think" was catfish cured in lime juice + shrimp. It was well portioned and although I was a bit overwhelmed with the number of jalapenos, I will likely try it again at the fair price of $7. It would have been an exceptionally healthy meal had it not been served with crunchy nacho discs. I'm a Chipotle fan and now I may never go back to Chipotle because for just a little bit more money, I can get the sit-down restaurant service with the same (if not higher quality) items. So cute! - Like a lot of Mexican places in the area, they give you chips and salsa. Here are things that reminded me I am not in California... - If you get tacos, they give you hard shells rather than soft tortillas. - A lot of items have white cheese sauce on top. We only recently found this place when said group of friends wanted us to come out there. It's not perfectly consistent on everything, but the food is always delicious. Service has been amazing most of the time but every once in awhile just doesn't hit. But coming on the weekends does seem to always mean a good time. The only negative so far we've seen is that mixed drinks are randomly weakly mixed sometimes. To some that might even be a good thing anyway. Just want a nice flavorful drink with a normal mild amount of alcohol. They are still pretty affordable. But one time we ordered the picture and even with two or three glasses my wife didn't feel anything and she is an extreme lightweight. The service was pretty good but we needed more time to explore the menu since we have never been there before and the waitress kept asking us if we were ready to order. I had their pico de gallo which was I have their pico de gallo which was tasty. For my entrée I had the shrimp chimichanga. The shrimp were fresh and I like the queso that they used on top. The side of rice was a little dry . The menu did not describe what came with it but it was the same as the chicken and beef chimichanga.
