My husband and I have been to El Maguey about 3 times now, the food and service has always been very good. But todays visit (4/17/15 4:00pm) has surpassed all other visits to any Mexican Eatery. Our service was very good, and I'm quite sorry that I don't remember her name. But the food we ordered was the best Mexican food we've ever had anywhere! I ordered the Pablano Shrimp Burrito and my husband ordered the Seafood Quesadilla. The Presentation was excellent, I have never had such a beautiful plate served to me. They both looked absolutely beautiful and was much nicer looking than the menu even showed. Then we dived into our meal and our taste buds were dancing. Excellent Excellent Excellent! I was anxious to try El Maguey at their new location in the old Western Sizzlin' building. I went twice just to be sure, and the news isn't good. The quality of the food and the service have seriously declined at the new location. The focus of the new restaurant seems to be on the bar and serving booze. It's getting to the point in Mexican restaurants that if you don't order any alcohol, they want to rush you out the door. Too bad. The chips were cold and the salsa was almost inedible. Tasted like crushed tomatoes, but with no heat or spice. Very bad. This happened on 2 occasions, about 2 weeks apart. The food just isn't very good anymore. We ordered fried chimichangas and they were undercooked and not crispy. The rice and the beans were lifeless. On the second visit, I got a beef tamale that tasted like it came from a box in the frozen aisle at the supermarket. Also, a couple of non-food related observations about the new location. The building is cold and drafty...also the can lights in the ceiling are improperly installed and the light shines right in your eyes when you're eating in the dining room. I mentioned this to 2 servers and they either didn't care, or they didn't speak enough English to understand my complaint. I don't see this business lasting very long. The boozers might keep it going, if that's the real profit center they're focusing on. In which case, El Maguey is really a bar with very bad Mexican food. There are better options in the Charleston area. Seek them out. read more

Best Mexican food in the area!!! We eat there very regularly. The staff is always good and they play Christian music on Sunday.

I really hate leaving a restaurant dissatisfied. We had a party of 6 here for lunch today and I was very disappointed. The tortilla chips they put on the table were stale. I wasn't going to complain about those because hey their free but then our food came out cold. The plates were hot but our rice and main dish was cold. Like they placed cold food on a plate and put it in a oven for a few minutes. The tostada I had was also stale. The server was friendly and asked how things were and I had to tell him about the cold and stale food. I was on my lunch break so I didn't make a big deal and ask for new food or anything. A few minutes later the manager came to our table and asked what was wrong and I told him and he repeated what I said back to me in a condensing way and just walked away. Needless to say this is the last I come here. I have still yet to find a decent Mexican restoring in this area. read more

Ok, so 5 stars may be a bit on the high side, but 4.5 stars isn't an option. Food was pretty good, the prices are great, but what really made this place was the service. Gage was our server, and he did.a phenomenal job. This was our first time here and he took the time, about 7 minutes actually, to go over all of his favorite dishes based on what's wife was feeling... She kept changing her mind. The food is ok, but watch the bar. They use a premixed mix to make drinks, hardly any alcohol in the drinks. The bar here sucks with inexperienced bar tenders or should I say, bar pretenders. read more

One of the rare Mexican restaurants that comes close to real authentic Mexican food. The Texas Fajitas are some of the best I ever had. The homemade chips and salsa were great. The margaritas actually had tequila you could taste, meaning they actually give you a good pour. We're still definitely be coming back. Thanks El Maguey! Camping nearby, checked in late and needed a restaurant. Glad we did. Food was fantastic. "Chef Steak" had incredible flavor. I lean toward spicier food than most people so it was perfect. Others may need to ask for it to be toned down. Bonus points for a nice selection of mainstream craft beers in bottles. read more

Probably one of the best Mexican restaurants in the area. Even the chips and salsa were amazing. Warm and lightly salted chips and a very flavorful salsa. I had the pork carnitas. It was outstanding. Not only did the pork taste like it was made with love and passion, but the portion was massive for the price. The waiter was just the right amount of attentive. Very upsetting visit! Tried to call order in and the phone was busy for over 45min. When I got there, I mentioned it to the hostess and she gave me the nastiest look. Ordered food onlyto get home and find out we had several missing items and a couple of the items were smothered with onions (ordered them without onions due to allergy.) Also, we didn't have any chips. We had to go back 3 different times before they finally got it right. Don't forsee us returning. read more

We have eaten here many times and it's a pretty good standard suburban Mexican restaurant. Service is usually solid. When choosing a meat, I recommend choosing the steak option over the ground beef, their steak is tender and flavorful. We also like the cheese dip with chorizo or mushrooms. read more

Do not waste any time or money on this restaurant. I went to El Maguey in Moncks Corner just a couple hours ago and had such a terrible experience i had to share right away! The waitress was very anxious to get us through our meal and out the door that she was of course less than friendly, and it was so obvious since we heard her tell a customer a couple tables down that she was ready to go home. I would have included her name but she didnt even introduce herself as our server when she came to our table. The food was so bad that we all pushed our plates away after a couple very small bites, and of course our waitress was nearby to take our plates away as to move us right along. The food was very overpriced and to our dissmay we were charged a fee for the chips and salsa that they put on our table as soon as we sat down (not by our request either). read more

On 1/18/2019 my wife and I went out for dinner. we decided to go to EL Maguey because there was not parking at the other place. we got there and noticed it had been remodeled so it didn't have a to crowded feeling. we were seated my wife asked the waitress about their drink menu and she asked for a "LIME Margareta", the waitress came back with an Orange Margareta. My wife doesn't like making waves so she didn't say anything. we ordered dinner, I ordered the carnitas( roast pork) and my wife ordered Chicken soup. we sat there for a few minutes, my wife told me her drink seemed a bit strong. I tasted it and it tasted as if they put 2 or 3 shots in it. my dinner came first. the meat looked like it had been sitting out for a while, it was hard and dry. when my wife got her soup, it looked like some type of red soup. after this I wish I had waited for parking at Cino de Mayo(great place to eat dinner) read more

The food was good, but the service was horrible. We had to wait over 5 minutes to be greeted, and order drinks. When we did get our drinks, my husband's was wrong. We saw our waitress twice more. Once to drop off our food, and again 20 minutes after we had finished eating to drop off the bill. When we went to pay we mentioned the drink mistake and received 10% off our bill. However, we also had a coupon for $6 off. Apparently they couldn't combine the 10% off and the $6 coupon. Since the $6 off was a better deal we requested that the 10% discount be removed and replaced with the coupon. The cashier said he was unable to go backwards, and that there was not a manager available... at 8pm on a Saturday night. We will not be returning. read more
