Can it! Really, my experience here can be summed up in three words: from a can. The chips were overlooked and had a burnt flavor, the salsa bland and tasted like a can. I ordered the Beef Chimichanga lunch special and they brought me chicken. I ate it anyway. The cheese enchilada I ordered on the side also had no flavor or substance and was drowning on a plate full of enchilada sauce that tasted like a tin can. The whole experience was underwhelming. Although I arrived at 1:30 after the noon rush, I was seated right away but then ignored for a full 15 min. I was sitting in a booth right outside the kitchen and across from the register, so it wasn't like they forgot I was there. I smiled and tried to get the attention of one of the numerous wait-staff milling about but they walked past and did not stop. TERRIBLE SERVICE!!!!! I WILL NOT EVER GO TO THEM BUSINESS AGAIN. We waited in line for over 25 minutes never was asked for help or even greeted. The waiter was VERY RUDE barely gave refills took forever to take our order btw didn't check on us we had to hunt him down. when ask to speak to a manager he wasn't good either refused to give us a refund even though we refuse to touch our food we just wanted to leave at this point. Ya know that "go to" place everyone has? Well, this is mine. Of course it's not the BEST food in town, but it's really really good. It's close to home, and we always know people in there. The wait staff is very friendly, mostly spanish speaking, (love it) and have always been quick to take our orders and to bring out our food. My kids have grown up going here and now that one of them is off at college, she always wants El Maguey when she comes home from school. There is an El maguey in KC,but apparently it's not as good as the one here in little Bridgeton, If I am to be totally honest, there would be 2 things that could help this place out and that is they need more than one bathroom for the ladies. When you are serving huge margaritas, to that many people, you need to have more bathrooms. :) Also, they need more seating space. When you are sitting in any of the booths just inside the front door and there is a line of people, sometimes with the door standing open because they are out the door, it can be very loud and annoying. When they moved across the street from the old location, I thought they would have expanded their seating capacity, but it does not appear so. Other than those couple of things, I would totally recommend this place. It's great for parties and drinks with a friend. read more

This place gets a huge lunch crowd from local workers in Hazelwood and Bridgeton. Food is very good, very fresh and well seasoned. Surpisingly, the ground beef taco is seasoned better than any taco of that kind. Traditionally, we don't eat ground beef in taco's. That's the American version. I typically stray away from it. However, this was the first one in a typical combo plate that I finished. Service is very good. However, it's way over crowded. I do not like how close together the seats are. They've crammed too many in there. Booths are better so get there early at lunch time. Also, I'm a non-smoker and did not like the bar/smoking area in front. PS....stay away from the horchata. It's nasty watery instant yuck. Still I would go back to this place any day for a quick fresh hot and CHEAP lunch. Very cheap. 3 stars for the restaurant set up. Wish I coudl give 3.5 read more

This is our favorite Mexican joint in the area (if not favorite restaurant period). The food is fantastic, especially the queso dip. We don't even need menus at this point because we both have our favorites. The Fajita Nachos are a lot of food. A half order is usually good for one person. The quesadillas are great for kids even though they have other kids menu items. They should be moving soon to the old KFC across the street which should alleviate some of the degradation of the building itself. The facilities are not fantastic but it seems like a short-term rented building at this point so it's hard to mark them down for that. read more

I am by far a regular here! This is an all time favorite restaurant! The food is delish..I would recommend the grilled a chicken ranchero...the servings are more than enough. Their is service is always great and you are greeted with a smile. Their mariachi band brightens the night! They engage everyone and even let you play the bongo or shake the maracas ! Very bad service!!! Waiting for everything!! We received our drinks right away and some salsa and chips. Took for ever for the guy to come back to take our order. Our special guacamole with 2 chips and queso fundido came out and it was sizzling we had a few chips left in our basket for everything. The guy ran off before we could ask for more chips. But he should have seen we were out. Houdini disappeared we sat here with nothing to eat our apps. Oh wait finally found him and now we r still waiting for chips. There are several El Magueys in the STL area but this one is not my favorite. Space is small and service is a hit or miss. Food decent, though I like the overall taste at the Chesterfield location off of Olive better. Margaritas are large but pure sugar. Price point is always great! read more

I had a frozen lime margarita, it was good, but the Mi fajitas is TO DIE FOR! it has chicken, beef, and chericeso in it, if you do not like, hit you in the face food go to chipotle for the gringo stuff. I've been coming to El Maguey's for a while now in Bridgeton and today I experienced the absolute worst service. Sat for 20 minutes before our server took our drink order. The drinks were just syrup and purée. When brought up to the manager Octavio he stated that mixing drink flavors makes the drink syrupy. I've been here multiple times and haven't had that problem. So I kept the whack drink but didn't drink it because it was absolute syrup. Now an hour later we still do not have our food. Called the manager over again and he said it was still cooking. We were a party of 6 while a party of at least 12 sat down after us and had their food and drinks before we even got our food. When the food was delivered everything was wrong, but the server made it seem as if we got exactly what we ordered. None of us eat beef so all of the enchiladas and tacos were asked to be made with chicken. But yet when the food came everything was beef. The overall experience was trash. This will be the last bill I pay here. I'm not sure what happened to the service here, but it's very disappointing. read more

I came to this location a few days ago for dinner. I ordered the chicken quesadilla. it came out before anyone else at my table got their food, so I guess my server thought i was ordering an appetizer because it was just a quesadilla, no sides or anything. I asked the guy who brought it out to me (not our server) if I could get a side of sour cream and guacamole. When I got my bill, my quesadilla was $3.50, the side of sour cream was 85 cents and the guacamole was $3.50, the same price as my dinner. I asked my server about this, and all he said was yeah thats how much it is. I told him that when I ordered it, they didn't tell me it was going to be an extra charge, which usually they would. Again, he told me it was 3.50 and he couldn't do anything about it. I asked to talk to a manager, which was pointless because he was completely unhelpful and rude. I told him the situation and that if I was aware a side of guacamole would have been the same as my meal I wouldn't have ordered it. He told me there was nothing he could do, and that it I wanted the side of guacamole I should have ordered something else, and proceeded to grab a menu and show me what "should" have ordered so I would know next time. I told them there wouldn't be a next time because i'm not ever coming back, to which he rolled his eyes and walked away. I wasn't try to be cheap or get something free, but I think when a condiment is the same price as a meal, the customer should be aware. I work in customer service, I know how it works. El Maguey is a small Mexican restaurant in Bridgeton. I would not recommend this location at prime hours only because they are so popular. You will likely have to wait for their delicious food and strong Margaritas. Did I mention the Margaritas? Anyway, my wife and I normally go there for a late lunch or go on non prime days. Their FOOD is AMAZING and the DRINKS are INCREDIBLE! They have ended happy hour on Fridays and Saturdays which I am thrilled about; now it's back to its serene and intimate environment. Went here on a Thursday night and had horrible service. The place was pretty empty yet it somehow took almost 2 hours for us to finish. Not sure if our server Tim was new or what but he was very slow and would disappear for extended periods of time without checking on us. Probably 30 minutes went by before he took our food orders. Then, after we had gotten our food he was completely MIA and didn't show up to give us our checks until one of the guests I was with crossed the room to get his attention. I should also note that we saw him standing around the perimeter of the restaurant on his phone multiple times. Overall, the food was okay but I'm giving 1 star for the service and the amount of time we had to spend waiting around for our server to come check on our table. The food was good. Our server was Jose. He was very good. For some reason they did not give us any chips and salsa. The food came out fast one plate at a time. Jose came by to refill our drinks saying he had to go on break and Sofia would take over our table during that time. Sofia never came by the table ever. We finally flagged her down to get our check after sitting there 15 minutes after eating. I asked to talk to the manager after we paid. We finally left because no one would every come to talk to us.
